Second US Citizen Infected With Ebola In Liberia, Which Shuts Down Borders To Slow Epidemic

Tyler Durden's picture

Update, one which many will say has been long overdue: Liberia Shuts Border Crossings to Slow Ebola Spread. From Bloomberg:

  • Liberia Shuts Border Crossings to Slow Ebola Spread: Allafrica
  • Only major border crossings at Roberts International Airport, James Spriggs Payne Airport, Foya Crossing, Bo Waterside Crossing, Ganta Crossing to remain open, AllAfrica.com says, citing Liberian govt statement.
  • At those entry points, testing centers to be set up; “stringent” preventive measures to be announced
  • New travel policy by Liberia Airport Authority on inspection, testing of all passengers to be strictly observed
  • There will be restrictions on public gatherings incl. solidarity marches, demonstrations
  • Hotels, restaurants, entertainment centers, video clubs to play 5-min. film on Ebola awareness, prevention
  • Govt vehicles to be commandeered, as needed, to support health delivery system
  • All govt facilities, public places to install/provide public access for hand-washing

It was a few short hours ago when we reported that as part of the escalating Ebola epidemic in West Africa a US doctor, Kent Brantly had himself succumbed to the deadly virus. Moments ago we found out that a second US doctor from the same aid organization in Liberia, Nancy Writebol, has been infected with Ebola.

Writebol in a June 2011 photo from the Rafiki missionary foundation

From CBS:

Two U.S. citizens are now reported to be infected with the deadly and incurable Ebola virus in West Africa.

The first American reported to have contracted the disease is an American doctor working with Ebola patients in Liberia, who tested positive for the deadly virus, North Carolina-based Samaritan's Purse issued said in a news release on Saturday.

The second person who reportedly tested positive for Ebola is a woman employed by an aid organization in Liberia who is a married mother of two.

In a statement on Sunday, Samaritan's Purse said: "Nancy Writebol is employed by SIM in Liberia and was helping the joint Samaritan's Purse/SIM team that is treating Ebola patients at the Case Management Center in Monrovia."

Writebol's age and hometown have not been released at this time.

What is most disturbing is that the two physicians have contracted the lethal disease despite apparently taking much needed precations to avoid infection as the following photos below demonstrate.

I quit my church because they kept using my money to send missionaries to Africa. They think they are helping but they are just making the problems worse. Much of the problem in Africa is overpopulation and essentially over breeding. Sending food and medicines many times strengthens the positions of the warlords that control the cities. Trying to cure epidemics just spreads them more rapidly as more people flock to an area for treatment that may run out long before they get there. How much aid have we given to Africa? Just like the war on poverty has the situation on the ground improved?

Two missionaries from my church died from disease while in Africa leaving their children as orphans. They decided helping people in Africa was more important than the welfare of thier own children. While harsh it isn't our business to help that wretched continent or any other. If you go to Africa during an outbreak of a deadly disease you deserve what you get. Ypu shouldn't be allowed back until it is certain you didn't bring anything back with you. One person on a plane entering the country before symptoms appear could kill millions of Americans because they felt they needed to help.

Churches in my area take in millions of dollars and send people all over the world to "spread the word" while families in the same neighborhood as the parish struggle. Before helping anyone in Africa a church should make sure the needs of local people are met.

@adr - you are absulutely right sir. Absolutely right.

Funny thing - talk to them about going on a mission trip downtown, or to a rural area infested with meth heads - and you don't get so many takers.

It is like the whole bogus conflict metals B/S that Congress got conned into signing as a part of financial reform. I quit a church that spent about $80k/year keeping a "missionary" family in Venezuela for 2 or 3 years. I wondered what good they did and what would have happened if that money could have been better spent training and supporting dozens of local clergy.

We also had members of the congregation that would go on "missions" trips to the Caribbean. So you have 15 to 20 overweight, out-of-shape couples plus throw in some teenagers all giddy as hell for their trip to help the poor. Lump all of that travel money together and you probably have $25,000 to $40,000 easy, which would have probably been enough to have the whole church or school built down there locally.

Instead you have these pasty fools trying to lay block and frame a building. They do that for a few days and then leave. Big fucking deal. They get to brag about if for the rest of their lives.

You are absolutely right Fred. Of course, the mere suggestion of that reality is enough to get you cast out as Satan incarnate around here in Alabama.

Jesus said if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day - teach a man to fish and you feed him for life.

I teach men to trap, not fish.

But according to most, I'm a heartless, soul less bastard because I don't want to prance around the tropics pretending to help the poor.

Aid? Aid is an 'american' scheme to direct the flow of resources. There is no aid.

Charity is now whatever helps the 'american' middle class, a booster to the business of farming the poor, extorting the weak.

And for those of you praising the christians over there doing "god's work", I would like to ask this question.  If it is God's Work to fight against this horrible disease, why the f*&% did your god create it in the first place?  Sounds like God pretty much hates all of us, especially christian aid workers who go to Africa.  Lol.

One, they can't, african borders are more porous than the Rio Grande.

I don't know if they were Christians or not but I would wager THEY WERE. Today's Christians have this INSANE attachment to people of color, and they pay for it. An elderly white couple Christian missionaries in Mexico two years ago were butchered for their GMC Pickup truck. They had labored for years in trying to save the souls of the Mexican people who are now gracing our humble nation. And while Haiti has left a trail of raped and butchered white Christian missionaries just a week or so ago a group of WCM from Hamilton were raped and beaten. But luckily no fatalities. And you know what? THEY NEVER LEARN.
No matter how many of their grandmothers, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, Grandpas, fathers, sons, grandsons get butchered AND raped they NEVER learn. They EXCUSE the non-white thugs. Seriously.

Is it any wonder that church attendance is on the decline among Whites?

And now these loons, medical missionaries are bringing DEATH to the White homelands, as if the invaders weren't bringing enough on their own.

LDS types are partially predisposed and largely programmed for rigid and hierarchical structures.  And they also love the job security that goes along with it.  So the
"NSA thing" does not surprise me.  They've also nestled themselves nicely into HP, where they are known as "The Mormon Mafia".  They are also partial to flying United and staying at a Mormon chain of hotels: Marriott.

BTW, last year, while at Simon Black's Offshore Workshop, I heard that Mormons and some flavor of Baptists are buying up huge tracts of land in Chile and elsewhere in S.Am.  Which REALLY worries the Catholic Church, as it is losing huge market share to them.  No wonder they picked an Argentinian Pope, who can offer a Catholic flavor of simplicity/fundamentalism.

I remember thinking that that sort of thing was probably why church attendence was falling through the floor because nothing in the service spoke to the people of the local area or addressed any of their spiritual or worldly concerns -- it was just one long Oxfam advert -- so why bother to go?

There is a similarly deadly disease sweeping the US and nobody is doing anything about the Obamabola  virus - deadliest plague known to mankind. First signs are a fixed rictus-like grin, a compulsion to lie about even inconsequential matters, a hatred of wedding parties and school buildings, followed by an irresistable desire to mate with Wookies.

Interesting, those symptoms sound just like those of the plague known as Christianity, except the wookie thing. Christian leaders usually prefer underage kids.

However, the symptoms for Christianity don't stop there, the other symptoms include delusions of a vengeful sky god and this belief that their god created everything...except nasty shit like this virus. They also believe that praying to this god will save them from this virus. It's widespread and those infected seek to infect all others in a Borg-like manner. No cure is known.

Generally Christians do not believe that "praying to God will save them from the virus".  Christians pray for 'gods will' to be done and then they ask for mercy. But thank you for preachin' your beliefs -maybe you can gain some followers on here. Personally, I am waiting for the facts before I attack anyones beliefs. Just show me how DNA was created and how that complex code came to be and then I'm all ears. Funny how this Doctor who has MUCH MORE of an understanding of science than you will ever have believes in god. Same goes for the director of the human genome project, a christian.

replacing "the unknown" with a word, "God" which stops further inquiry...

I will agree it is replacing "God" with "the unknown", however, rather than treating these concepts as mere "words" thereby stopping further inquiry, Christianity requires further inquiry to be made.  Whether that leads to insanity is a stretch.  The problem of a finite creature being able to grasp the infinite is not a sham problem, nor the evidence of an incarnate God having a public presence in the time / space creation to display the degree of seriousness, reality and love with which He would shower on his children a sham solution.

The earliest witnesses to this have written that it's actually You who know this fact deep down, and You know it.

Romans 1:18-20 NASB:   "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them;  for God made it evident to them.  For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse..."

NEW DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE AND UNTREATABLE DISEASES

Next heading to talk about is HEALTH & DISEASE. He said there would be new diseases to appear which had not ever been seen before. Would be very difficult to diagnose and be untreatable — at least for a long time. No elaboration was made on this, but I remember, not long after hearing this presentation, when I had a puzzling diagnosis to make, I would be wondering, "Is this ... was what he was talking about? Is this a case of what he was talking about?". Some years later, as AIDS ultimately developed, I think AIDS was at least one example of what he was talking about. I now think that AIDS probably was a manufactured disease.

Things I've learned from this article:…

I would certainly hope it was not these "things" you "learned" from this article that motivated you to leave for the family farm with ammunition.

Whereas I would concede death is the end for all, (regardless of the fight and victories some have achieved in postponing the effects of various diseases), God’s love for humanity has always been the greatest force in the universe, (regardless of your perception that the physical death we all must experience is the worst possible outcome of our existence on the earth), the fact remains, not everyone on the earth has been guilty of “Fornication Under Carnal Knowledge”(though the likelihood may be a vast number have).

My question and observation will continue to be amazed at the desire many of the Christian faith have to sacrifice their own craving to fly to the family farm for the need to assist others caught in the grip of governments, powers, forces and others that care not a whit for them as persons to catch a glimpse of the eternality of life beyond the grave (outside the so-called “72 virgin” crap).

I was being sarcastic. I attend church and have a wife who has actually been to Sierra Leone to help these poor souls. I'm a little floored by the abundantly selfish sentiments here, but then again, this is how people cope with fear. I'm reading fear in these comments and rightfully so. My wife has done things for people that 99 out of a 100 would never be capable of stomaching. I respect her for that. I think the "If god is so awesome why he be tryna kill us all derka derka" are indicative of uncaring shitheads. It's these people that selflessly give and go to these places that have probably staved off a large scale culling. However, it's inevitable. I believe in God and I believe in kindness and being a caring would to others. As I said in another comment, maybe this bug is right on time. It is ZH though where the cynical are welcomed with open arms. I'm cynical to a point too. I'm here to glean info where MSM dare not go. "It is ZH though where the cynical are welcomed with open arms."

It's not so much cynicism as it is exhaustion.  The news comes thick and fast around here, and most of it has very negative implications.  And that's just one site.  We are mentally and emotionally overloaded with one disaster after another, and the human mind can only take so much before exhaustion sets in.  That's probably what happened to these doctors - they were overloaded, became exhausted, and made mistakes.

Cynicism is not cold-heartedness.  It's a defense mechanism for those who've seen and felt too much.

Very MUCH Agree with the ciritcism of the Summer "missionaries", the pseudo-Christians who have to ask What Would Jesus Do.  Were they Born-Again, they would KNOW that Jesus Does HIS Father's Will and they would Be Enabled To Know HIS Will also...  Lots more to be done at home, for those who actually are "thy neighbor"; but no foreign travel romance or self-puffery in helping single mothers, addicts, neglected children and seniors.  Not heard anything about contemporary gang miistries.  Of course, that takes real witness and Guidance From God.  Not something many of these divinity-schooled businessmen can bring to their flocks.

If you never saw need to ready some supplies/gear and find some means for self-sufficient living in the expected, albeit slow-motion economic collapse we are now experiencing; the ebola threat has great potential.  Not likely to be an illness you will suffer with for a long time if you manifest a case. so there's that...  Just a terrible way to die, that might be prevented if you make the effort to minimize your exposure by readiness and planning.

If you took action already, in anticipation of economic collapse and that expected chaos, you are very much ahead of the curve.  Ability to shelter in place, limit outside interaction and shopping, avoiding crowds along with regimen of prophylactic hygeine could be all it takes to see you through.  Of course, if you live in some mega-highrise buiilding, the proximity to so many wild-card persons would throw all your judicious planning to the whirlwind...

Looks to be so many whammies coming at US at once.  If the ebola thng motivates you, that's a good thing.  For sure you have to take responsibillity for your family and make your concerns known to extended family members.  Having the assets that may be deployed to preserve you and yours seems a prudent use of them at this time.

God Bless you all!

There is a difference between Knowing God's Will and guessing at it.  If you gotta consider WWJD you're only guessing.

Not like there's any churches sending physician teams to places w/ebola outbreaks.  Are catholic charities sending physician priests and nuns into the hot zones?  More likely catholic charities will be relocating ebola refugees to USA cities.  Lots of great cities ready to greet them w/open arms, cities with councils who decided they would be "sanctuary cities"....

Not a hater as you suggest, but whatever....  Not like you even understood the posting.

Wonder how many missionaries there are working in Sudan and Syria, Iraq working to prevent the slaughter of Christians?  Like was said, no oceans there and no easy acceptance of Americans by the natives.  How many American Christians head to Haiti these days?  How many working in China, undercover, while China is shutting down home churches and detaining Christians with a fervor not seen since mao.  Much easier to go to "czarry The Word" to Costa Ricans...   How many bringing The Word to the norco trafficante terrorized people of Northern Mexico?

Do a little research and see which charities are sponsoring illegal border-hoppers in circumvention of American Immigration law; laws which are among the most lenient of all nations.  Why aren't these same groups pushing for open-immigraton to other nations rather than only the US?  How about missionaries decrying the greed of Wall St and Washington DC as they Loot This Country?  Where are the Real Christians on issues contrary to American Values?

“Our team has followed to the letter all of the protocols for safety that were developed by the CDC and WHO,” Strickland told NBC News. “At this time we have not been able to confirm 100 percent the method of contagion,” she added.

Brantly was treating patients; Writebol was working to help doctors and other health workers get in and out of their protective gear, Strickland said. That would include spraying them down with a chlorine solution and then stripping off and disposing of every piece of gear.

Strickland said her group had to suspend outreach efforts in Lofa, in the north of Liberia, after a crowd attacked a team of health workers who came to collect the body of a person who was suspected of dying from the disease.

“There was a mob that surrounded them,” she said. Teams treating patients have stayed in place, she added.

It went on to say that 60% have died, and those treated early have a much better chance. So the Doctor and this lady have the best shot because they found it early. Really these people don't want their help, attacking people who collect the body of an Ebola victim.

so I'm wondering something here, these aid workers, doctors, whatever...they understood what they are dealing with right?

I mean you don't just dive in and start caring for ebola victims the same way you would say, handing out blankets and food to the victims of a natural disaster. obviously universal precautions would be strictly observed and enforced, not to mention whatever special protocols specific to a virus his deadly requires. and we can be certain, beyond a reasonable doubt, that these protocols were being followed to the letter by those providing the care because, well, it's ebola and becoming infected leaves very little hope of survival.

which leads me to the obvious question, given it's method of transmission and safety precautions involved, how the hell did these medical professionals become infected at all?

there is something distinctly disconcerting about all this, I remember back in 2008 the whole h1n1 scare, it was all over the news, hell we were getting updates on number of cases right in our work e-mails hourly. management didn't want you within a mile of the place if you had so much as a sniffle, they were going around sending people home if they so much as coughed to loud. it was a really big deal, a full on three ring media circus.

but now here we a virus that kills 60% of those who contract it, medical professions dying from it and an entire country basically shutting down and going into self quarantine because of it and...

hey, it's really no big deal, it will all be sorted out by November.

one can only hope so...

"handing out blankets"

Makes me think of the Souix and small-pox.

The Africans are correct to stop foreigners from entering.

I don't think universal precautions are enough with Ebola.

Wasn't it the US Govt that gave Indians (oops, Native Americans) blankets from small pox victims in the 1800's?

OLO BENGOU, Guinea — Eight youths, some armed with slingshots and machetes, stood warily alongside a rutted dirt road at an opening in the high reeds, the path to the village of Kolo Bengou. The deadly Ebola virus is believed to have infected several people in the village, and the youths were blocking the path to prevent health workers from entering.

“We don’t want any visitors,” said their leader, Faya Iroundouno, 17, president of Kolo Bengou’s youth league. “We don’t want any contact with anyone.” The others nodded in agreement and fiddled with their slingshots.

Singling out the international aid group Doctors Without Borders, Mr. Iroundouno continued, “Wherever those people have passed, the communities have been hit by illness.”

Health workers here say they are now battling two enemies: the unprecedented Ebola epidemic, which has killed more than 660 people in four countries since it was first detected in March, and fear, which has produced growing hostility toward outside help. On Friday alone, health authorities in Guinea confirmed 14 new cases of the disease.

Workers and officials, blamed by panicked populations for spreading the virus, have been threatened with knives, stones and machetes, their vehicles sometimes surrounded by hostile mobs. Log barriers across narrow dirt roads block medical teams from reaching villages where the virus is suspected. Sick and dead villagers, cut off from help, are infecting others.

“This is very unusual, that we are not trusted,” said Marc Poncin, the emergency coordinator in Guinea for Doctors Without Borders, the main group fighting the disease here. “We’re not stopping the epidemic.”
