Canadian Doctor Quarantines Himself Over Ebola Fears After Returning From Liberia

Tyler Durden's picture

Earlier today we wondered, rhetorically, if the CDC was wrong when it stated, with confidence, that there is "little risk" for the Ebola virus to leave the African continent, and cross the Atlantic, landing in North America. We may have gotten the official refutation less than 6 hours later, when moments ago Canada's CTV reported that a Canadian doctor is in self-imposed quarantine after spending nearly a month in West Africa treating patients in the deadly Ebola outbreak that has claimed nearly 700 lives. "Dr. Azaria Marthyman of Victoria, B.C. was among a handful of Canadian health-care workers who traveled to Liberia, where the Ebola epidemic is currently raging. He was part of a North American team from the Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse." This is the same charity organization whose two US citizen members were previously reported to have caught the virus.

Dr. Azaria Marthyman of Victoria, B.C. is seen putting on protective
gear before treating Ebola patients in Liberia.

Dr. Marthyman worked at the agency’s facility in Liberia’s capital, Monrovia, before returning to Canada last Saturday. While he has not tested positive for the disease, he has quarantined himself as a precaution.

And immediately, the attempt to spin this as good news emerges: "Azaria is symptom-free right now and there is no chance of being contagious with Ebola if you are not exhibiting symptoms," Melissa Strickland, a spokesperson for Samaritan’s Purse, told CTV Vancouver Island.

That last statement may be worth a #timestamp, especially considering that one of Marthyman’s colleagues with Samaritan’s Purse, Dr. Kent Brantly, is confirmed infected. The 33-year-old married father of two children is undergoing intensive treatment for the disease, but has been able to speak with doctors and work on his computer.

From CTV:

Health care workers undergo rigorous decontamination processes to avoid infection.

“It takes about 45 minutes to suit up before going into the isolation area,” Marthyman said by telephone.

His journey to West Africa is not his first to an area ravaged by disease or disaster. Last year, he travelled to the Philippines to provide medical care to victims of Typhoon Haiyan. In 2010, he joined a medical team that treated patients affected by a cholera epidemic in Haiti.

In an interview prior to his trip to Haiti, the father of seven shared why he risks his life to help others.

“We have this slogan at home that we always say at the table, and it’s ‘do your share and let the love go around,’” Marthyman said.

We congratulate Dr. Marthyman for doing the right thing, and we certainly hope that all of his Ebola tests turn out negative.

Yup, all valid observations.

I haven't seen anything written up on the current epidemic, but it seems a lot worse to me that previous ones. Like the pathogen is more easily spread, and travels further. This sort of development would be entirely expected but is very troubling.

I'm starting to wonder if ebola is becoming aerosolized. If it can be spread (even poorly) by coughs and sneezes then we're in for a very hard time if this thing ever turns up in an urban area with poor health care.

Opps, oh yeah ...

It must not be that serious.  Corgenix Medical (symboll CONX), a small, profitable, debt free medical company in Colorado was awareded $2.9 million last month to continue their development of the world's only Ebola Rapid Diagnostic Test kit.  The proto-types, which were sent to Liberia a few months ago, can detect ebola in 15 minutes vs several days right now.  The stock is selling for $.27 and has a market cap of around $15 million.  We will know ebola is serious when the stock cracks the $10 price.  No one cares right now.

Speaking of "rapid virus testing technology"

A team of German university engineers and scientists has created a fail proof quick virus scan based on saliva samples.

The key component of this testing device is a pure gold plate which I'm guessing is about 1/8th to 1/4 ounce worth.

Should this device become mainstream and find applications around the world's airports and other points of entry, the run is on.

It's God's work. Let God sort it out. Stay out of it.

It's all up for interpretation which is the funniest part about the whole doctrinal debate. Trust me, I've sat in on a few and tried to see the argument.

Like I said, quit trying to be like the (fictional) guy in that story ("Christ like"). Plenty good people in the world who help others and not feel the urge to share their fantasies.

Example: He turned water into wine. I tried and it didn't work.

But even that miracle is offensive to some "Christians" who are of the "conviction" that all alcohol is from the dark forces of the devil.

Gimme a break!

What about that Scripture needs interpretation?

It is as straightforward as can be.

You weren't given the power to work miracles, and the fact that you think Jesus was fictional would make that clear to any believer.

As for those "christians" who clearly misinterpret numerous Scriptures because they wish to, they shall be judged:

"I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues which are written in this book; 19and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his part from the tree of life and from the holy city, which are written in this book" - Revelation 22:18-19

Here is the good SIMaritan's last patient review. Seems like a fairly typical type of treatment from the medicine men in the cult of death. Ignore symptoms, claim superior knowledge, withhold access to knowledge and information, deny treatment, inflict pain, prescribe poison, make profit

"I don't know why this dr gets so many good reviews. Because he is nice and doesn't make patients wait too long? He is NOT HELPFUL. I diagnose myself and research the situation and then figure out what the treatment should be and then tell him. He sometimes goes along with me and sometimes calls me a hypocondriac for wanting to address my problems instead of ignoring them. I knew something was wrong with me for some time, and when I finally figured out what it was (after doing extensive research) and told him, he said that he had realized a long time ago what condition I had but didn't want to mention it!! I could have been getting treatment for MONTHS! Many examples of him doing nothing in situations in which a good dr would explore and try to find treatment."

I like to think of myself as a charitable person, but I couldn't fathom showing up in Haiti or Ebolaville to lend a hand.

I know, I enjoy a good jab at just about everyone in the news as well, but this guy sounds like a saint.

On a side note, I'm beginning to wonder if everything told about the virulence of Ebola is accurate, seeing how the doctors and nurses are dropping left and right.  You'd think they'd be able to protect themselves adequately.  It seems the virus may transmit a bit more easily, or be contagious over a greater time span, than health guidelines would indicate.

"Wasting away again in Ebolaville.  Looking at the brown stains in my shorts.  Some people claim that there's a virus to blame, but it's Obama's fault."  Sorry, couldn't help myself.  Once Ebolaville came into my head - it was all over.

That is not what the above posted link said:  http://www.msdsonline.com/resources/msds-resources/free-safety-data-shee...

The fact sheet, updated in August 2010, said:

Physical inactivation: Boiling = above 100 degrees C at sea level for 5 minutes. If heated to 60 degree C - which is normal for hot water tanks etc. to kill Legionella, it must be heated for 30-60 minutes.

Survival outside the host for a number of days - what ever that means. The (23) appear to be a footnote number, even if no foot notes are included. You find (23) at the Immunization paragraph as well. It keeps its ability to infect at room temperature and 4 degrees C for several days - again whatever that means precisely. I don't think the (23) represent the number of days.

In any case several days/a number of days is bad enough. The really concerning part is that the sheet also included these three snippets:

"Humans may be infected by handling sick or dead non-human primates and are also at risk when handling the bodies of deceased humans in preparation for funerals, suggesting possible transmission through aerosol droplets (2, 6, 28)"

"PRIMARY HAZARDS: Accidental parenteral inoculation, respiratory exposure to infectious aerosols and droplets, and/or direct contact with broken skin or mucous membranes (35)"

"INFECTIOUS DOSE: 1 – 10 aerosolized organisms are sufficient to cause infection in humans (21)."

Handwashing? Yes. The document says:

"SUSCEPTIBILITY TO DISINFECTANTS: Ebola virus is susceptible to sodium hypochlorite, lipid solvents, phenolic disinfectants, peracetic acid, methyl alcohol, ether, sodium deoxycholate, 2% glutaraldehyde, 0.25% Triton X-100, ?-propiolactone, 3% acetic acid (pH 2.5), formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde, and detergents such as SDS (20, 21, 31-34). "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_lauryl_sulfate

So according to wiki you can check to see if your soap, shampoo and laundry detergent etc. has SDS in it or you can use Methyl Alcohol to clean your hands.

"respiratory exposure to infectious aerosols and droplets, and/or direct contact with broken skin or mucous membranes (35)"

"INFECTIOUS DOSE: 1 – 10 aerosolized organisms are sufficient to cause infection in human"

Aerosolized it is.

Put a fork in that debate.

@ Seek Truth: It is possible that the "aerosolized droplets" could be from washing a body or from mucus coughed straight in the face of someone else or similar. It does not necessarily mean from normal breathing, as other sources still maintain that it is not airborne yet.

However - The link has been taken down now. So either this information was too erroneous - or it was too correct, I would say. There is no explanation, so I assume it is censorship to prevent people from learning anything relevant and valuable from a seemingly scientific source. Nice world we live in!.

EDIT: Please note that Methyl Alcohol mentioned in my comment above is very very toxic, if ingested.

If it can be aerosolized by a cough, it can be aerosolized by sneezing or even heavy breathing.

Shame they censored the link, now we know why.

And of course any proper imbiber of spirits knows it's ethyl, not methyl alcohol that brings a warm glow and a gentle smile to those who partake.

Methyl is for fuel and industrial uses.

"there is no chance of being contagious with Ebola if you are not exhibiting symptoms,"

To be clear, this is not known with absolute certainty, most doctors/scientists believe it is not contageous if the poor soul is not exhibiting symptoms. The most vulnerable phase is however when the onset of symptoms look like a cold or flu.

I think I read that a guy got on a plane symptom free and by the time he arrived in Libya he was ill.

God help us it does not go live during cold or flu season, people will think it is just a cold and not quarantine.

Not to mention everyone at both airports, who was within a certain proximity of him, any other transport he took to get to the quarantine site, etc. It's hundreds of people.

"People can be exposed to Ebola virus from direct physical contact with body fluids like blood, saliva, stool, urine, sweat etc. of an infected person and soiled linen used by a patient. It can be spread through contact with objects, such as needles, that have been contaminated with infected secretions." http://www.afro.who.int/en/clusters-a-programmes/dpc/epidemic-a-pandemic-alert-and-response/epr-highlights/3648-frequently-asked-questions-on-ebola-hemorrhagic-fever.html

"Secretions". Spit is a secretion. Coughing and sneezing spreads spit into micro droplets. If sweat spreads Ebola, if urine spreads Ebola, then spit from coughing and sneezing spreads it too. Anyone who says no, show me the testing that proves it doesn't. "Officials" are trying to get us to be in denial like they are.

Closing US borders can't be done too soon.

And I'd like to know how the Ebola virus survives in sperm, so you must refrain from having sex for 7 weeks, according to reports I've read.

Either you're done with it or you're not.

And yeah, ebola is like having a cold.

This is disinformation being spread to keep the sheep from panicking.

Let's keep it simple and direct:  EBOLA is a BSL-4 (Biohazard Safety Level 4).

See http://www.cdc.gov/training/quicklearns/biosafety/  tabs 10 and 11*

Tab 11: In addition to BSL-3 considerations, BSL-4 laboratories have the following containment requirements:

Laboratory practices

  • Change clothing before entering.
  • Shower upon exiting.
  • Decontaminate all materials before exiting.

Safety equipment

Facility construction

  • The laboratory is in a separate building or in an isolated and restricted zone of the building.
  • The laboratory has dedicated supply and exhaust air, as well as vacuum lines and decontamination systems.

Plan and act accordingly.

p.s. If any Western health professionals tending to Ebola patients did anything less than this, they are/were reckless and arrogant asses, who fully deserved the consequences they suffered -- as neither Ebola nor their (real or imaginary) Deity gave a damn about them, given the results.

None to beam up.  -Kirk out

I just talked to a nurse who is trained in those bio suits. She says they are very safe and some sort of lock tight at the neck. Then a substance is sprayed at them to see if they can taste it, if they can it is locked tighter.

I do know a nurse who got a stick and got Hep B from it, even though she said she treats those things as snakes.

It happens.

In a previous ZH article said http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-07-27/second-us-citizen-infected-ebola-liberia  (confirmed when I checked other sources online) Dr. Brantley died of Ebola. "US doctor, Kent Brantly had himself succumbed to the deadly virus."  Succumbed: "to stop trying to resist something. : to die."  Brantley's family returned to the US. The story of the family's visit was picked up by some online sources but seems now to be buried. http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message2603861/pg1

Family's travel is mentioned in this article http://cw33.com/2014/07/28/dr-oh-no-prayers-for-fw-doctor-with-ebola/ but otherwise, it's like it never happened.

Perhaps the first ZH article 7/27 was wrong and Dr. Brantly is still alive?

The CDC used the same "little risk" that The Fed uses when describing bubbles, systemic risk, etc.  It translates to "huge risk."
