Russia And India Begin Negotations To Use National Currencies In Settlements, Bypassing Dollar

Tyler Durden's picture

Over the past 6 months, there has been much talk about the strategic proximity between Russia and China, made even more proximal following the "holy grail" gas deal announced in May which would not have happened on such an accelerated time frame had it not been for US escalation in Ukraine.

And yet little has been said about that other just as crucial for the "new BRIC-centric world order" relationship, that between Russia and India. That is about to change when yesterday the Russian central bank announced that having been increasingly shunned by the west, Russia discussed cooperation with Reserve Bank of India Executive Director Shrikant Padmanabhan. The punchline: India agreed to create a task group to work out a mechanism for using national currencies in settlements. And so another major bilateral arrangement is set up that completely bypasses the dollar.

From the Russian Central Bank:

First Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation KV Yudaeva and Executive Director of the Reserve Bank of India G. Padmanabhan at the twentieth meeting of the Subgroup on banking and financial issues of the Russian-Indian intergovernmental commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation discussed the current state and prospects of cooperation between banks.

The meeting was attended by representatives of central banks, ministries and agencies, credit organizations in Russia and India.

During the meeting dealt with the problems faced by the branches and subsidiaries of banks in the two countries and ways of addressing these problems.

As a priority area discussed the use of national currencies in mutual settlements. Given the urgency of the issue and the interest of commercial structures of the two countries, the meeting decided to establish a working group to develop a mechanism for the use of national currencies in mutual settlements. It will consist of representatives of banks and, if necessary, the ministries and departments of the two countries to coordinate its activities will be central banks of Russia and India.

What is curious is that now that China has sided firmly with Russia when it comes to geopolitical strategy (not least when it comes to recent development surrounding the downing of flight MH-17, recall "China Blasts "One-Sided Western Rush To Judge Russia" Over MH17"), and thus Russia behind China when it comes to claims by the world's most populous nation in its territorial dispute with Japan, Japan too is scrambling to secure a major ally in Asia, and it too is trying desperately to get on India's good side.

Bloomberg reports that "Japan’s Sasebo naval base this month saw unusual variety in vessel traffic that’s typically dominated by Japanese and U.S. warships. An Indian frigate and destroyer docked en route to joint exercises in the western Pacific."

The INS Shivalik and INS Ranvijay’s appearance at the port near Nagasaki showed Japan’s interest in developing ties with the South Asian nation as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s government faces deepening tensions with China. Japan for the third time joined the U.S. and India in the annual “Malabar” drills that usually are held in the Bay of Bengal.

With Abe loosening limits on his nation’s military, the exercises that conclude today showcase Japan’s expanding naval profile as China pushes maritime claims in disputed areas of the East and South China Seas. For newly installed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japan’s attention adds to that of China itself, in an opportunity to expand his own country’s sway.

Japan’s involvement in Malabar underscores its interest in helping secure its trade routes to Europe and the Middle East. The Indian Ocean is “arguably the world’s most important trading crossroads,” according to the Henry L. Stimson Center, a foreign policy research group in Washington. It carries about 80 percent of the world’s seaborne oil, mostly headed to China and Japan.

...

“The Japanese are facing huge political problems in China,” said Kondapalli in a phone interview. “So Japanese companies are now looking to shift to other countries. They’re looking at India.”

So on one hand Japan is rushing to extend a much needed olive branch by the "insolvent western alliance + Japan" to India; on the other Russia is preparing to transact bilterally with India in a way that bypasses the dollar.

Which means that just as Germany has become the fulcrum and most strategic veriable in Europe (more on this shortly) whose future allegiance to Russia or the US may determine the fate of Europe, so suddenly India is now the great Asian wildcard.

Perhaps a very important hint of which way India is headed came moments ago from Reuters, which said that India has raised the issue of U.S. surveillance activities in the South Asian nation with Secretary of State John Kerry, the foreign minister said on Thursday. "Yes, I raised this issue (U.S. snooping) with Secretary John Kerry ... I have also conveyed to him that this act on the part of U.S. authorities is completely unacceptable to us," Sushma Swaraj said at a joint news conference in New Delhi. In response, Kerry said: "We (the United States) fully respect and understand the feelings expressed by the minister."

Thank you Snowden for helping move the geopolitical tectonic plates that much faster.

Now let the real courting begin.

My dear American cousins (no, I don't mean this ironically, because I really believe we share most moral values and I for one consider you to be close family that has bailed us out more than once when insanity reigned supreme in Europe): Most Americans simply do not have any idea what it means to hold the world reserve currency. But if that privilege is questioned by the rest of the world, it will have extremely dire consequences for your country and its citizens. And believe me, that privilege is being questioned as we speak. The dollar will not last.

One of Putin's close ally has an odd last name for a Russian:  ROTENBERG   (Arkady and Boris Sr)

"Arkady Rotenberg is one of the most influential businessmen in Russia. He and his billionaire brother Boris were judo sparring partners with president Vladimir Putin and the three have remained close. Starting in 2008 the Rotenbergs began acquiring subsidiaries of Russian energy giant Gazprom and built them into Stroygazmontazh Corporation (or SGM Group), one of the biggest construction contractors in the energy field. Arkady owns 51% of SGM, and holds a 26% stake in Mostotrest, a big road construction company. Arkady also owns 50% of TPS Avia, a construction firm that won a tender for a new project at Sheremetyevo airport near Moscow that includes a terminal for 15 million passengers and a cargo facility. Arkady is the president of the multi-championship-winning hockey club Dynamo Moscow, which used to be sponsored by the KGB. In 2013 Arkady was elected to the executive committee of the International Judo Federation."

The Europeans, goaded by the US, pushed Putin into the arms of the Chinese. And, the idiots, gave China a subsidy on their gargantuan gas pipeline deal as the Russians had to expedite the closing and reportedly had to lessen the gas price. Putin is rightfully scared of China, which has 10 times the people and a purported 4,000 Chinese a day cross into Siberia.  This puts Putin in a 'sticky wicket'.

The US then is helping its main hegemonic opponent as above.

Putin wants to play off China with India.

Interesting times.

I've got a bad feeling about this 'agreement' which allows up to 700 armed Australian (police) personnel to act as security for the MH17 investigators - this could very well be a set up.

If there is a clash with 'alleged' separatists, this could drag Australia into something much bigger, and something much darker - and I say 'alleged' because given the Kiev junta's reputation for attacking its own civilian population and the fact that they're not coming clean with all the goings on around the events of July 17, I wouldn't put it past them to pull a swifty and attack the foreign security forces and blame it on either the Eastern Ukrainian rebels or Russia or both.

I've got a gut feeling this is not going to end well...

How?

My fellow commenters here have led me to believe the issue is simple:

Russians and the East Ukrainians wear halos.  Putin sits on God's right hand.  And American's, West Ukraine, Europe - and all Americans carry pitchforks and have demonic horns.

With things so simple, what could go wrong?

Japan-China-India : the unholy triangle of Asia.

Will Putin's Eurasia fantasy and Iran/Turkmen/Kazakh pipeline to India completing the Siberian surge to China/Japan allow the BRICS more energy latitude and financial bilateral attitude to negate trade in Uncle Sam's polluted greenbacks ?

If Iran joins the bandwagon it will tip the balance. And Iran/Iraq is now a hot potato. What becomes of Kurdistan is an enigma that could turn into a riddle under the Shia Sunni divide of Iraq re-burning.

On the Us front; with Saudi squabbling with Qatar, Israel wobbling under US pressure and Egypt growling at Turkey; it makes the Western alliance in ME look like a sack of snakes getting mighty desperate. Watch out for deadly unforseen bites.

The key variable here is the price of oil in the coming months...if it sags, and makes Ruski exports lag it puts a nail in Putin's bag. If it spikes, like the Eiffel, Putin will feel the urge to play at King Kong of the Steppes dangling from Mount Ararat, like Noah's ark unleashed. For sure the legacy of Obammy/Sarko Libyan plays has made that oil bonanza tribal zone a land of black drought. What an awesome kick up Uncle Sam's CIA infested bum.

So, Mutti's call is awaited in Europe and Putin's ball bounces in Euroasia; all the while Kerry plays at avoiding to look like Humpty Dumpty sitting on his Wall of Lamentations in Jerusalem-- hoping the West Bank won't go up in flames after Gaza burns.

A long hot summer becomes a sizzling place where it pays to avoid jets and deadly strains of migratory viruses worse than Black Death.

This is a positive development for reigning in Dollar mismanagement.

This is a far more creative response to Russian dissatisfaction with the West than slinging bombs at one another in Europe.

Yet there also remains little or no evidence that the resultant BRICs currency regime will be of a different stripe than the Dollar's.  If viewed through indiviual eyes rather than through the lens of the geopolitical entities we call 'countries', I am not at all sure that this won't simply be more of the same.  And I would point out that it is entirely possible, indeed likely, that the exact same international bankers facilitating the Fiat-Dollar, and Fiat-Euro scams are almost certainly deeply involved in - or controlling - this alternative.

While Jim Willie's words insist this currency (or collection thereof) will be as good as Gold, I say that gold is better than words.  And that is the whole point.

Fiat currency is like playing Russian Roulette by hitting a bundle of  "dynamite" with a hammer to find out which stick in the bundle is real.

The player is under the impression that HE has the skill hit the 'fake' sticks without exploding the real one - he can't.

The observers are always convinced that by virtue of their intelligence they can avoid the fallout when a player sets off the dynamite - that THEY are safe.  THEY AREN'T.

Similarly, people ALWAYS convince themselves their superior moral national character will allow THEM to use a fiat currency without a crack-up boom - they can't.

And observers convince themselves that THEY will be isolated from the consequences of one of their trading partners using fiat currency.  But they won't be.

Watching people define others by what they oppose rather than what they promote is a sad commentary on the nature of humanity.

I wouldn't rule it out, after what the USA has done around the world, or at least what Americans have allowed in our names through ignorance and cowardice,  it is not out of the question a number of alliances come here and bomb it to the stone age after the dollar collapse.

In the Nostradamus quatrains, there are hints the United States will not play much of a factor in the final disturbances slated for the mid east. Possibly gone broke, packed up and left.

What Merkel and her Mensche Hollande have just pulled in Europe is not going to make them very popular down the road either when the full impact begins to be felt economically. One thing that can stir the Germans up is screwing around with their money. This is not going to end well for Europe. Sure Germany can have access to a bit more farm land in the western Ukraine but now Russia has just been given the tremendous oil fields surrounding Crimea.

The key to facilitating trade settlement that bypasses the U.S. Dollar in a meaningfull way will be the launching of a SWIFT-style system by Russia and China. Both nations have been working on such systems.

China's system is known as the China International Payment System (CIPS). It has been in the testing phase, and there's been word that it's been somewhat delayed due to software issues.

Russia only mentioned its SWIFT alternative but did not delve into details.

On an interesting note, Malaysia recently signed on to the United States' SWIFT system, as well as the Trans Pacific Partnership, a trade agreement organized by the U.S. to thwart the BRICS nations.

Make no mistake that all current world events revolve around  the U.S. using  its military force to preserve the world reserve currency status of the U.S. Dollar.

The shoot-down of the Malaysian airline, MH17, may have been orchestrated by the U.S. to drive a wedge in between Russia and the other BRICS nations. That incident took place only one day after the BRICS meeting where the  launching of the BRICS New Development Bank was finalized.

And I am beginning to wonder whether the recent raid by Chinese officials of Microsoft's office in China has something to do with Forex rigging. After all, the Microsoft OS is the dominant operating system in the world for PCs, including PCs that are used at the trading desks of Forex traders. With the back doors that have been built into Windows, who's to say whether some Wall Street titans have been frontrunning trades of governments around the world.

"July 31, 2014

Source: Eric Zuesse

On July 30th, a German pilot headlined at anderweltonline, “Shocking Analysis of the ‘Shooting Down’ of Malaysian MH17,” and he provided the first public analysis of the photos that were available immediately after the disaster, of the plane’s cockpit, and of a wing. Google removed the photos soon after they were first available, but pilot Peter Haisenko had fortunately screen-saved them, and now shows them on that site, after having carefully analyzed and made sense of what they show. He says: “The facts speak clear and loud and are beyond the realm of speculation: The cockpit shows traces of shelling! You can see the entry and exit holes.” And they’re unmistakable in the accompanying photo. “This aircraft was not hit by a missile” and it was not hit “in the central portion” of the airplane. “The destruction [that explains the way the entire wreckage was spread out] is limited to the cockpit area,” as he explains it: “A typical SU 25? (which is the Ukrainian plane, or pair of planes, that accompanied the Malaysian jet into the conflict-area) “is equipped with a double-barreled 30-mm gun, type GSh-302,” carrying “a 250 round magazine of anti-tank incendiary shells and splinter-explosive shells (dum-dum),” which are “designed to penetrate the solid armor of a tank” and which ripped to shreds the cockpit-area on both sides of the plane. “The cockpit of the MH017 has evidently been fired at from both sides: the entry and exit holes are found on the same fragment” of the cockpit, so that there had to have been two SU 25s, and not merely one, which were escorting that plane into the rebel-held area.

This type of “shelling” will “cause massive explosions inside the cockpit,” due to the shocking change of air-pressure, so that “the rear sections broke in mid air at the weaker points of construction most likely under extreme internal air pressure. The images of the widely scattered field of debris and the brutally damaged segment of cockpit fit like hand in glove. … Both the high-resolution photo of the fragment of bullet-riddled cockpit as well as the segment of [bullet-] grazed wing have in the meantime disappeared from Google Images.” Nonetheless, “The shelling of the cockpit of Air Malaysia MH 017, … is definitely not … speculative,” asserts Haisenko.

Haisenko, according to the Anderwelt website, was born in 1952 in Munich, trained at the Lufthansa Flight School, and piloted for 30 years numerous different plane-types. In addition, he has been a respected published investigative journalist and historian, including the favorably reviewed 2010 book, England, the Germans, the Jews and the 20th Century. So, he has experience not just in piloting but also in investigative journalism and historical writing. Unless the photos that he captured on his computer were faked by him (and they look like they’re of that wreckage-field), the United States and Ukrainian Governments have been lying about how the Malaysian airliner was destroyed. If those photos are authentic, then they are the most virginal, undoctored and unhandled evidence, relating to reconstructing what brought this airliner down.

This isn’t necessarily to say that the economic sanctions that the U.S. and EU have placed against Russia are necessarily based on lies, but it is to say that unless Mr. Haisenko has perpetrated a fraud, the U.S. and EU have. Right now, it’s his evidence against their “evidence,” at a time when their “evidence” has been widely challenged as being non-credible. Perhaps Haisenko’s isn’t. But, certainly, the imposition of the anti-Russian sanctions on the basis of the “evidence” that has been offered to justify them is scandalous in itself, as being, at the very least, highly premature, if not outright warmongering.

No one can doubt that George W. Bush and Tony Blair invaded Iraq on the basis of bogus “evidence” like that. Are President Obama and NATO aiming to invade Russia on that same fraudulent basis? Is history repeating itself here, only far more dangerously? And will the world’s press do as rotten a job this time, as they did last? The consequences this time could turn out to be far, far, worse.

One thing is very clear: the public have every reason to distrust both their governments and their press."

I live rural where large farms are now money making kingdoms. The kings' worldview is strictly TV. Only in the fuel, grain and meat markets do I hear independent thought that does not parrot the TV. An otherwise savvy family member once bought me a new TV with the well meaning intention that watching TV would help me in understanding the world. (True)

Interesting comment from tony wilson. As usual.

re: Japan

Long ago I had marked at something that would signal a Major Point had been reached. The Event would be Japan shedding the Uniform of a WestBloc Player, and putting on the Uniform of an EastBloc Player. Japan is already part of ASEAN 3+10, but what's really needed is a mending of past animosity between Japan and China, something the WestBloc likes to fertilize to maintain the friction. Up until circa 2001 Tokyo was the key third party in the NY, London, Tokyo Total Control over the POG.

It would be a heavy blow on the West to see the Leaders & People of China and Japan start a New Friendship

===========================

also while its not mentioned in the news, consider the two major events just a week before MH17's downing

The BRIC, BRICets Summit " it was held on 1416 July 2014."...along with BRIC Bank plan.....and

the coincidental timing when the EU refused to go along with the call for more Sanctions against Russia ... of course MH17 changed that basically on a MSMedia campaign, though its all detailed here, a great book or at least watching the longer video:

All gold at FED belongs to US, because it is viewed as a war contributions from Germany to US, hence it will never be repatriated.
Sorry, Germany has no weight, as it is still occupied by american jewery and according to secret and confidential documents from POtsdam, it will be released from this status in 2099, after it is totally destroyd by imporetd asians and africans.

Russia does not have good long term prospects with energy sales to India and China.

India is a geopolitical hedge against China simply walking into the sparsely populated hinterlands of Novisibirsk and taking the energy.   It is also a hedge against China making deals with the Kazahks and Turkmen and using the competition to edge out Russia.

An Indian deal is itself evidence of weakness and doubt in the China deal.

The problem is that to feed India he has to go through those same Asian Republics.  Worse, he has to pass through Afghanistan and Pakistan.

That second one gives the Pakistanis a tool against both India and Russia that they are likely to use.

One doesn't give the Pashtuns knife and then turn one's back without reasons both compelling and dire.
