WHO Warns Ebola Outbreak Out Of Control, "High Risk Of Spread To Other Countries"

Tyler Durden's picture

Things just went to 11 on the Spinal-Tap amplifier of massive infectious disease outbreaks. As AP reports, the Ebola outbreak that has killed more than 700 people in West Africa is moving faster than the efforts to control the disease, the head of the World Health Organization warned. Dr. Margaret Chan pulled no punches in her direct statement, "If the situation continues to deteriorate, the consequences can be catastrophic in terms of lost lives but also severe socio-economic disruption and a high risk of spread to other countries." Time to panic?

As AP reports,

Dr. Margaret Chan, director-general of the World Health Organization, said the meeting in Conakry "must be a turning point" in the battle against Ebola, which is now sickening people in three African capitals for the first time in history.

...

At least 729 people in four countries — Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria — have died since cases first emerged back in March. Two American health workers in Liberia have been infected, and an American man of Liberian descent died in Nigeria from the disease, health authorities there say.

While health officials say the virus is transmitted only through direct contact with bodily fluids, many sick patients have refused to go to isolation centers and have infected family members and other caregivers.

The fatality rate has been about 60 percent, and the scenes of patients bleeding from the eyes, mouth and ears has led many relatives to keep their sick family members at home instead.

...

"Constant mutation and adaptation are the survival mechanisms of viruses and other microbes," she said. "We must not give this virus opportunities to deliver more surprises."

...

"I believe we're only seeing a small portion of the cases out there ... The virus is getting to large, dense, city areas. We're now getting samples (to test) from all over," he said Friday.

...

Meanwhile, other countries are taking precautions to prevent the spread of Ebola.

*  *  *
Interestingly, worries are spreading quickly as one Commonwealth Games competitor found:

a cyclist from Sierra Leone competed in the Commonwealth Games after being tested for Ebola. Moses Sesay, 32, was admitted to a Glasgow hospital last week after feeling unwell, and doctors tested him for various conditions including Ebola. Sesay was passed fit, and released from hospital in time to compete in the individual time trial on Thursday.

Yahoo has kindly provided this 'panic sheet' for where the nearest CDC quarantine stations are in the US...

I would rather fight than be taken to an isolation center. If I have it then dying in a gun battle is preferable. If I don't then going to an isolation center will ensure that I do. Either way I will not go volutarily.

It's a conundrum for the Masters: how do you get a heavily armed populace into the camps voluntarily or without losing your security officers, transport and such?

If your security officers had to say goodbye to their families every night, and were met with men in body armor, AKs and ARs not in the downstairs hallway but were interdicted at crossroads, checkpoints, and assembly points, your Masters would soon run out of volunteers and transport.

The question is - do you value Freedom and it's travails, or will you submit and burn, likely with your spouse and children beside you?

Imagine looking into the eyes of your wife, your child, as you await the inevitable fate that slouches towards you and those you were given a charge, by God, to defend and protect.

I know you were being funny, but just so we can have some factualizations here; you got ebola by eating the monkeys. They call it bushmeat. That's why it starts to spread first in the countryside.

I think however that the days of ebola being limited to the countryside and monkey-eaters are just totally over. Ebola has us now -- we are the host -- and that's how things are going to stay from now forward.

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 14:26 | 5033919 Make_Mine_A_Double
Make_Mine_A_Double's picture

Pardon, had to grab a napkin and get the fried marmot off my fingers before corresponding.

Yes, bushmeat is considered something of a delicacy in South West Africa. In China monkeys brains are considered a rare celebratory item served to honored guests (and utterly vile).

You are correct in that I've never seen an Ebola strain with this much staying power. In the past they peaked and gone to ground. Not this time.

However, if we were serious we would have stopped all air links from South/SouthWest Africa and any primary main feeder airports. That is a symbolic gesture of course in this age of interconnected air travel, but it would have indicated a level of seriousness that we are apparently incapable of anymore.

If the motive was actual concern for public health and safety we most certainly would have closed the southern border by now, so safe to assume the Obozo admin does give a rat's ass about the general safety of the public.

They got it from eating the original host fruit bats. Two boys were playing with, brought them home the mother cooked them and they all got Ebola.

Check out Fruit Bats...That is where the resevoir is...just like Rabies.

Isn't it interesting that Rabies is not curable after symptoms appear? Isn't it interesting that the host of Rabies and Ebola are Bats?

If we look into what gives these mammals the immunity to the destructive infection and how that immunity is present then perhaps we can understand how to create the proteins which they have present naturally and use that as an antiviral agent to treat these deadly diseases???

For some reason the money is spent on the development of a vaccine to prevent transmission rather than a drug to treat it. The answer is in the Bat's physiology.

You miss the point.

The original pool of virus was in monkeys and bats and direct consumption was necessary. That was when 20 people contracted the virus. Now that 1,000's of humans have contracted the virus, the human immune system is altering the virus. If enough people get this, eventually it will mutate (that's what virii do, it's all they do except replicate) and then the fun begins.

If this thing gets into pigs in the food supply, especially in China...

It says that she has since been cleared. I have read that elsewhere as well (although probably based on the same press release - so not confirmation per se) and not come across any other story from Hong Kong. Yet. The health authorities had received 45 inquiries about Ebola on the 30 July, so time will tell if any of the cases prompting these inquiries are Ebola.

@ Reload: Ugandan Health Ministery mentions one un-confirmed case in Nairobi. Even if this suspected case is cleared, extreme caution would probably be wise at this point. The tea plantations will hopefully still be there next year, so maybe it is better to allow some time to evaluate the current situation before traveling there. Kenya has been a very violent place on earlier occasions when social order was disturbed (I forgot the specific cause of unrest, but remember my surprise that Kenya would decent into chaotic scenes like that.)

It's already out. The moment it ends up in any civilized populated advanced culture it is unstoppable. The virus can hide within you for days or weeks while you infect friends, family, workers...and everyone of those who is infected now becomes their own walking spreader of the virus and the multiplier on that is frightening.
I always believed Ebola will be the virus that culls most of the world population in the 21st century. It is going to get into Europe and than that is that..by the time they close flights to the U.S. It will already be here.

We already agreed that she would bug the fuck out if there were any more than 2 people admitted who had been bitten by other people.

Now we're talking about how to bug out if Ebola hits. It's tough with flu like symptoms. I think maybe I'll just tyvek us in our house with duct tape for a few months until this whole thing blows over.

Israeli holiday makers were evacuated from their Maldivian resort after one of them tore up a placard equating the Nazi Swastika to the Israeli flag, officials said Wednesday.

Some 30 Israeli surfers were moved out to safety from Thulusdhoo island, near the capital island Male, as residents of the overwhelmingly archipelago protested the pulling down of anti-Israeli placards.

Tensions rose after an Israeli man tore down the placard daubed with a Swastika which had been pinned to a coconut tree.

Minister at the President's Office, Mohamed Shareef, said they evacuated the tourists for their own safety.

"There could have been an ugly incident and that is why the tourists were evacuated from the resort," Shareef told AFP by phone.

He said Israelis were not banned from entering the archipelago, better known for its upmarket tourism, but the Maldives was bitter with Israel over the violence.

"We have not banned them, but Israeli tourist must remember that they are visiting a 100 percent Muslim country," Shareef said. "We unequivocally and unconditionally support the Palestinian cause."

This story could have been better written.

The Maldives locals put up anti-Israel placards (apparently w swastikas on them, to equate Israel's actions with genocide).  The Israeli tourists tore down the placard(s).

Evacuated or kicked out?  BTW, the article says "the overwhelmingly archipelago".  It should read "overwhelmingly Muslim archipelago", pretty sure.

SCANDAL! DR KENT BRANDTLY DENIED LIFE SAVING AND PROVEN EBOLA TREATMENT

August 1, 2014

* US DOCTOR AND AID WORKER ARE BEING DENIED A PROVEN EBOLA TREATMENT

*MEDIA REPORT BRANTLY WAS ONLY GIVEN A UNIT OF BLOOD FROM A  14 YEAR OLD BOY WHO SURVIVED EBOLA WHEN TRANSFUSIONS OF BLOOD FROM EBOLA SURVIVORS HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO SAVE LIVES

*NANCY WRITEBOL GIVEN “EXPERIMENTAL SERUM” CONTAINING THE BLOOD OF A SURVIVOR WITH EBOLA ANTIBODIES AFTER BRANTLY OFFERED IT TO HER BECAUSE “NOT ENOUGH” TO GO ROUND

*SIERRA LEONE ALONE REPORTS 133 SURVIVORS OF EBOLA AS OF JULY 31st – SO PLENTY OF BLOOD

*DURING THE ZAIRE EBOLA PANDEMIC OF 1995 DOCTORS TRANSFUSED BLOOD FROM SURVIVORS INTO VICTIMS

*SEVEN OUT OF EIGHT PEOPLE SURVIVED EBOLA AFTER TRANSFUSION

*FOREIGN DOCTORS TRIED TO STOP THEM FROM PERFORMING THE LIFE SAVING TRANSFUSIONS

The successful treatment of Ebola patients by blood transfusion from recent convalescents is public knowledge and is even documented on film:

EBOLA: THE PLAGUE FIGHTERS – NOVA – Discovery/Science/History (documentary)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YYskFkqoyI

Thank you to Carolyn Dunning for this summary.

“As the Ebola epidemic came to a close in Zaire in 1995, 8 patients were transfused with blood from recent convalescents who had survived Ebola. The first patient to agree to this experiment was Nicole, a nurse who fell ill with Ebola despite strict precautions when handling the sick

At timepoint 40:14 mins of the video we see several survivors of the pandemic.

Then Nicole, a nurse is diagnosed with Ebola. She eventually agrees to be transfused with blood from a convalescent with her blood type in the hope that the antibodies will aid her recovery. Foreign doctors try to prevent Zairian doctors from transfusing Nicole with convalescent blood, but they go ahead. She recovers as do seven of the other eight patients.”

The CDC, WHO, the US government are willing to endanger the lives of Dr Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol by denying them blood transfusions proven to be effective in the field in order to hype Ebola and push their martial law agenda.

Taking them back to the USA for treatment is just hype. Brantly and Writebol should be given blood transfusions from survivors with matching blood types in West Africa by local doctors who know what they are doing.
