Ebola Deaths Go Exponential; Nigeria Demands Experimental Drug From US, Saudi Death First In Arab World

Tyler Durden's picture

The official Ebola death toll is now at 932 with over 1,700 reported cases but as the WHO reports, in the last 48 hours, deaths and cases have exploded (48 and 108 respectively). As the charts below show, this epidemic is going exponential. What is perhaps most worrisome is, while playing down the threat in Nigeria (most especially Lagos - which the CDC Director is "deeply concerned" about), officials have formally asked the US for the experimental Ebola drug, which suggest things are far worse than the 3 deaths reported so far in Nigeria would suggest. Finally, as we warned yesterday, Saudi Arabia is suffering too as the main who was hospitalized yesterday with symptoms has died - the first reported casualty in the Arab world.

As The BBC reports,

It is the world's deadliest outbreak to date and has centred on Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Eight people are currently in quarantine in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, and two have died there.

The Saudi man died after showing Ebola symptoms when he returned from a business trip to Sierra Leone, the Saudi health ministry said.

The Ebola outbreak has gone exponential...

Cases...

Deaths...

And then there is this...

  • *NIGERIA FORMALLY REQUESTS EXPERIMENTAL EBOLA DRUG FROM U.S.
  • *NIGERIA HEALTH MINISTER IN TOUCH WITH U.S. CDC DIRECTOR

Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu has sent request to director of U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he tells reporters in capital, Abuja.

“We have been in communication in the last 36 hours”

“We are getting reports that the experimental drug seems to be useful”

Which suggests things are far more serious in Nigeria than officials are letting on. As The BBC reports,

But it is not clear if the ZMapp drug, which has only been tested on monkeys, can be credited with their improvement.

Prof Peter Piot, who co-discovered Ebola in 1976, Prof David Heymann, the head of the Centre on Global Health Security, and Wellcome Trust director Prof Jeremy Farrar said there were several drugs and vaccines being studied for possible use against Ebola.

"African governments should be allowed to make informed decisions about whether or not to use these products - for example to protect and treat healthcare workers who run especially high risks of infection," they wrote in a joint statement.

The WHO, "the only body with the necessary international authority" to allow such experimental treatments, "must take on this greater leadership role", they said.

As CDC's Director warned...

As Al Arabiya reports,

A Saudi man, who was hospitalized for suspected Ebola infection, died on Wednesday.

The man, in his 40s, had returned recently to Jeddah from a business trip to Sierra Leone, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday. He was admitted to hospital on Monday and showed symptoms of Ebola virus infection.

His death marks the first reported casualty of the Ebola epidemic in the Arab world and comes as an emergency World Health Organization summit was being held in Geneva to discuss measures to tackle the epidemic.

And finally - some humor from Michael Ramirez at Investors.com

Sure, you just split the genes from the antibodies of survivors of the three known types of ebola.  Then you toss them into the splicer and splice the all together, and dump them into a frame solution made up of some Kentucky tabbacco.

You got all that.  I am sure there are just hudreds of gene splicers in Nigera, and the personnel to go along with them.

Otherwise, wait in line like everyone else.

Except White Americans.  Because we rock.

Mother nature is a glorious bitch. She always finds her way. We may not like it. I'm sure she looks at schemes like that and says "Bring it." If some group of fucktards did that, it's so funny, it is another iteration, another variation on a theme, part of the genetic symphony, Darwin's ideas writ very fucking large. If we try to overwrite the code, we flunk. The effort to overwrite, if it were to come off, is the experiment. That is the real reason central bankers will fail for that matter, they too are fighting nature. It is an illusion that we are anything that is NOT part of nature. I need to stop with this and get to the point. On the longest timeline, it won't work and it won't matter, she will have her way. We war, we scheme, we shirk our duty, we have our opinions, its all her.

Here's how it goes down.

Lets say, it gets out and goes exponential in the USA population somewhere. All you have to do is stay inside for a few weeks. The rest of them die off, and there's a horrible mess, but the infection cycle stops. There's a reason this type of outbreak is usually not long-lived, it kills so many that it can't spread any more.

But sure, lets have a few more yellow-and-white bunnysuit pics on every Ebola article at ZH, because < pageviews >. Give me a fucking break.

Just because you may be prepared to survive with no food, water, electricity, heat, or fuel - doesn't mean a true global pandemic is going to be a picnic - especially when surrounded by folks who are not so well prepared.

Anytime anyone starts to tell you how to solve some huge problem or survive some horrendous disaster by stating that: "all you have to do is. . . " I get pretty suspicious.

A global pandemic the scale of the Spanish Flu now would crush trade, the economy, and more importantly, critical infrastructure.  The probable breakdown of food water and sanitation systems alone could result in the deaths of millions.

Being prepped would make somthing like this survivable - at least initially - but it could be a game-changer for civilization as well (Are folks going to keep coming to work to keep all those cooling pumps working at all those reactors?)

Wed, 08/06/2014 - 17:18 | 5055961 Jethro

I agree with you completely.  I've not insinuated that life would easy.  It wouldn't be.  But, we wouldn't immediately go back to the 1890's with regards to technology.  Rome didn't crash immediately, and we wouldn't either.  What will work against the US is how many different ethnic/cultural/regional divisions we have internally.  I think that the country would become fragmented as a matter of course.

I work in an industry that operates, in part, on federal/state and municipal funding.  When the purse strings tighten, plans get shelved.  In 2008, every municipality reigned in their projects, and there was an ample amount of uncertainty.  Anybody making a living regarding public infrastructure experienced some amount of pucker factor.  Since nothing was fixed in 2008, it'll happen again, but will most likely be worse this time around.  A global pandemic would definately be a black swan event.  Given the global population and a 50%+ kill rate, a pandemic would cripple the economy for decades probably.

Prepping?  I prep for everyday.  I may have a natural disaster, I could get laid off.  Long term storage food is extremely cheap insurance.  So is a water well.  If there is no work to be had, I have a varied enough background to be useful, and am intelligent enough to get by.  Sadly, most people aren't.

I was responding to Esponere Mendaces.

You seem to have a very healthy appreciation for what the implications of a pandemic might be.

Our current economic collapse seems to be plodding along at a pace that hasn't been too hard to keep up with.  It's the black swans that could catastrophically interrupt food/fuel/sanitation/power that get me worried.

History channel. They talk to sociologists, dietitians, historians, gun professionals, and others. This takes a family through hypothetical break out of a pandemic. They go through hell and the end is not all good. With that said, this still pulls punches relative to what would be real. Worth the watch, though cheezy in places.

We are long overdue for a meaningful plague.  It'll happen once again, probably when confidence in governments/money fall apart.  Pathogens have always been what keeps the human population in check---until the last 100 years or so.  Wars aren't even remotely as effective with regards to population reduction.  During one of the last bubonic plague outbreaks, some cities in China experienced an 80% population loss.  The big cities worldwide are in for quite an experience as our species has such a short memory.  Que Sera.

The request for the drug will be refused because it's "experimental" and "in short supply." In a few months "limited supplies will be available" at astronomical prices.

And of course, the outbreak will be allowed to continue. China pulls out of Africa. Cases start appearing in Sudan and anywhere else Islamic radicals look like they might be causing a problem. Collateral damage be damned.

Inoculated USA business representative will negotiate, and counter the Chinese deals with better offers. Africa as a training ground for radicals is neutralized. Afghanistan is next, of course. Pakistan too, most likely. The remaining jihadis flee to whatever countries they can, spreading death in their wake. They will not be welcomed.

Cheers!

Just passing on what I heard elsewhere: There are multiple Ebola drugs being developed including by the US Army bio war lab

http://www.forbes.com/sites/paulrodgers/2014/08/04/biowar-lab-develops-c...

The problem is long human trials must be financed by the drug company. Try an unapproved ebola drug on Africans. and they die, it is racist. Ship home some non Africans and test on them, and African countries begin demanding the drug. The US can can grant exceptions to drugs.

Pretty good marketing

if Obama made a grand humanitarian gesture at the upcoming African conference, pretty good press. I bet he would even offer to have the US pay for the drugs. Obama did not cancel his visit to Africa despite the epidemic. No explanation has been given why the victims had to be shipped back here. They could have shipped the drugs to africa. This epidemic is bad, but so are all ebola epidemics. The risk has not changed. Africans still eat bush meat, and they still fly to other countries

I did the numbers on this a few days ago and posted in another thread.  The doubling rate has been ~30 days for the last 4 months.  The number to watch out for is 25k deaths.  If it happens at/before New Years they haven't been able to make a dent in it and everyone will have 3-4 months to prepare to avoid society in general.  If they are unable to stop/slow the 30 day doubling I believe the 'critical' point will be 250k-500k deaths by April.  If that happens there has been absolutely no success at containment and there would be mere 6 months or so before it is 20% of the population (at these current rates).

Hopefully the virus hasn't gotten partially airborne and it IS due to the washing customs etc.

From Daniel Defoes historic collection of stories about the great black plague of europe called 'the journal of the plague year'.  Defoe spoke of the psychology in different countries as the plague hit. THe french called it the Italian disease, the english called it the french disease, and so on so that every country looked for a scapegoat. Somehow if Ebola goes worldwide the US will be a favored scapegoat of the african origin disease. One positive note is that winter is aproaching and this virus seems to not thrive in cold climates with less crowded, sweaty, unbaithed populace.
