More Warmongering: US Secretary Of Defense, NATO Both Say Threat Of Russian Incursion A "Reality"

Tyler Durden's picture

On the heels of yesterday's comments from Poland's Sikorski, NATO has confirmed there's a risk of Russia sending troops into Ukraine under the 'pretext' of a humanitarian or peacekeeping mission. "We're not going to guess what’s on Russia’s mind, but we can see what Russia is doing on the ground - and that is of great concern," a NATO spokesperson warned, adding, "this is a dangerous situation." Then US SecDef Hagel added, "the threat of Russian incursion in Ukraine is a reality." Russia's response to this warmongering (as Ukraine appears desperate to instigate something before the money runs out) is to blast the disinformation, "reports of troop buildups near the Ukraine border are groundless." It appears we are going to need more YouTube clips...

US Secretary of Defense Hagel is chiming in...

  • *HAGEL SAYS THREAT OF RUSSIAN INCURSION IN UKRAINE IS `REALITY'
  • *HAGEL SEES 'POSSIBILITY' OF RUSSIAN TROOPS ENTERING UKRAINE

And as Bloomberg reports, NATO sees incursion risk on apparent troop buildup...

NATO said there’s a risk of Russia sending troops into Ukraine under the “pretext” of a humanitarian or peacekeeping mission after President Vladimir Putin massed soldiers on his country’s western border.

“We’re not going to guess what’s on Russia’s mind, but we can see what Russia is doing on the ground -- and that is of great concern,” Oana Lungescu, a spokeswoman for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, said by e-mail today. “The latest Russian military buildup further escalates the situation and undermines efforts aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis. This is a dangerous situation.”

...

“Putin will likely aim at a fig leaf policy with an incursion under the guise of a peacekeeping operation,” Amanda Paul, an analyst at the European Policy Centre in Brussels, wrote in an e-mail. “As other conflicts in the former Soviet Union have shown, once there is a Russian military presence it usually never leaves.”

On the heels of yesterday's comments from Poland...

Poland has “reason to believe” that the risk of an incursion is “greater than a few days ago,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters in Warsaw today. His foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, yesterday said that any incursion would be under the guise of a peacekeeping operation.

The Germans are not buying NATO's perspective...

“I cannot believe Russia would attack Ukraine, which would worsen the situation further and deepen the conflict with the West,” Meister said by phone today. “I don’t see signs for invasion. In fact, Russia has tried to bring in some distance from the separatists.”

Russia's response:

  • *RUSSIA SAYS REPORTS OF ARMY BUILDUP NEAR BORDER GROUNDLESS: IFX
  • *INTERFAX CITES RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY ON MILITARY BUILDUP
  • *PENTAGON, NATO STATEMENTS ON BORDER BUILDUP DISINFORMATION: IFX

*  *  *

We are sure evidence will be forthcoming...

Chuck Hagel has had a few primaries to tend to.

Ukraine Nazi and pro-russian parliament members are fighting in the aisles and the country is way beyond broke.

And yet the  EU ,itself stuggling for unity and solvency, want's them aboard. EU now seen as a tool of US foreign policy.

 Re.More warmongering.

Is the intention of  the powers that are assisting the western Ukraine government , either singularly or collectively (NATO),  to create a humanitarian crisis of such magnitude as to provoke Russia to cross their borders to give humanitarian aid to east Ukraine civilians, where those same said powers have been unable to provoke Russia from resorting to direct military engagement ?

There ought be, imho, a UN Resolution tabled regarding the humanitarian crisis caused by Ukraine government bombing their own civilians and the infrastructure of the east Ukraine.

Are the alleged comments of  Tymoshenko, earlier  this year, stating that Russians in East Ukraine should be nuked indictive of the general attitude and intent of the present Ukraine  government, and its supporters, to totally annihilate (genocide) or remove these people from their land ?

( That's genocide of a definiton beyond the scope of the  Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG) which excludes political groups and politically motivated violence).

No reason for Putin to invade Eastern Ukraine - just like shooting down MH17 - there is NO benefit to Russia to invade.  If Russia invades, it will only justify the MSM and Propaganda attacks by the West.  If Putin puts his counter-sanctions into play, Ukraine will fall soon enough.  Of course Germany is not buying this - after fruit and veggies - it is not that much further to shut off Russian Natty Gas.

How can the US tell if Russia is massing at the Ukraine border?  From the lack of MH17 images, it seems like US satellite coverage is pretty poor in that area.

If Putin is really smart and gets his best PR advisors to work, at the same time he enters East Ukraine to bring order he'll announce to the world in no uncertain terms:

"We have no choice but to bring order after the West has sat and watched its puppet fascist government in Kiev slaughter innocent civilians indiscriminately for months."

Let me get this right: Russia gathers an army on the Unkranian border. And when NATO says they might invade it's "warmongering"

Zerohedge is such an obvious Russian "news" outlet.

If the US is "warmongering" by pointing out Russian "excorsizes" at the border what is Russsia when it provides the rebels artillary, tanks, APC's and Katusha rockets and anti aircraft missiles?

Just wondering.
