70% Of Americans Believe Illegal Immigrants Threaten Way Of Life

Tyler Durden's picture

In recent weeks, Bloomberg Businessweek reports, President Obama and congressional Republicans have begun to offer the same simple-sounding solution for dealing with the flood of children crossing the U.S. border alone: Send the kids home. But with tens of thousands of them churning through the system, some just toddlers, the logistics are overwhelming. Since October, more than 57,000 children have arrived by themselves, most from Central America (as we show below), and 22,000 more have been detained with their parents (mostly children under 12). The American people appears considerably more concerned than the politicians - a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows 70% of Americans - including 86% of Republicans - believe undocumented immigrants threaten traditional U.S. beliefs and customs.

As Bloomberg Businessweek notes,

As of June 30, fewer than 500 of the 57,000 have been sent home, and more children continue to arrive every day, despite pleas from the Obama administration to Central Americans not to come.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents find that most don’t try to run; in fact, they want to be caught. The kids hope that being apprehended will begin another journey, one that will end with permission to remain in the U.S.

“It’s just been politically untenable to even improve services for these kids we were seeing, let alone prepare for emergency situations,”

*  *  *

And the American people is starting to worry... as Reuters reports,

As President Barack Obama considers sidestepping Congress to loosen U.S. immigration policy, a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Americans are deeply worried that illegal immigration is threatening the nation's culture and economy.

Seventy percent of Americans - including 86 percent of Republicans - believe undocumented immigrants threaten traditional U.S. beliefs and customs, according to the poll.

The findings suggest immigration could join Obamacare - the healthcare insurance overhaul - and the economy as hot button issues that encourage more Republicans to vote in November's congressional election.

...

Only 17 percent thought more legal immigrants should be allowed to come to the United States. Thirty-eight percent said the number should stay the same.

...

"If Obama starts using executive orders to grant citizenship or to stop deportations I think he gives Republicans a big opening," said Jennifer Duffy, of the Cook Political Report analyst group. "It'll be about the issue at hand, immigration, but it also feeds into this Republican narrative of overreach, of sort of abusing his power."

As one poll respondent (who has voted Dem and Rep in the last few years) noted... there was no need for either Obama or Congress to take new measures. "It doesn't matter. Enforce the laws that we have here now," he said.

These are not real costs.
They can be cut to zero at any time. Immigrants arrive to EARN money not get free handouts.

There IS no morality in that. The problem is the system itself, and those who run the show. It is THEY who create the situations that force people to migrate. It is not the natural tendency to uproot your family and flee to a brand new place. Things usually have to be pretty bad for folks to do that. They aren't being drawn here, they're being driven here. The noxious governments that are forcing these people to go on the move are doing that to them against their will. They are illegitimate leaders, dictators and strong men. Very rich men, who do NOT represent their people.

C'mon, it should sound familiar...we got a lot of that going on here too.

And just let me say that although I do have my generous view about most immigrants, I DO recognize the real danger that a small but malignant group bent on harm can do. Border security should be very intense. The fence idea is ridiculous, but they need a LOT more border patrols and better monitoring via technology.

And I also believe that when a country has its borders swamped by desperate people, that country needs to find out where they are all coming from. Then go down there and basically grab them diplomatically by the head and yell "What the FUCK is your major mal-FUNCTION! Whatever you're doing to these people, stop it!"
And make it clear that if they don't, you're gonna do something about it. To me, driving your people out and into somebody else's backyard is pretty much a hostile action, and deserves swift response. And not by venting on the poor slobs on the border, but by going right to the source of the problem, clean it out and help those folks get back home, where hopefully things will get better and they'll stay there. Now THERE would be a proper role for our military, and right in our own backyard for a change...

Far, far worse than the gangbangers, actually. They wiped out total civilizations, like the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans. You should calculate that into the equation. Sorry, but you are taking your eye off the ball here. Focus on the true criminals, the Federal Reserve operators. They are the ones who have raped this Nation (and the World as well). Everything else is a distraction. Beware. As far as the immigrant children, they are victims of this world-wide rape. I am guessing that many have one or more dead parents, and let's all be honest here, sending them "home" is probably certain death. That sure doesn't make us look very civilized, does it?

What would happen to an american parent letting their minor children go anywhere unattended?  Can a US minor leave the US and enter any country they desire without any documentation?   lLaw enforcement will arrest a parent for allowing their 8 year old to ride their bike to the local park without adult supervision under child endangerment laws.

In fact no US citizen can legally leave or re enter country without proper documents.

Again, I ask, can the mass exodus of minors from Central America  be a coincidence and without some poltical sponsorship?  In effect politically hiding behind children in order to further a desired political agenda.  Has this ever happened before?

I've never heard of this many children independently trying to enter the US at one time for.

Something doesn't smell right.

False choices. Weak straw man. This site and many who participate here are NOT in love with banksters.

Illegal border crossers are still Illegal border crossers. You cant do that in Mexico or any other Latin American county. For that matter you cant illegally cross any country borders where that country controls its borders with deportation or jail time for foreign criminals.

Illegals are not immigrants.

Not false choices. Both choices are 100% valid to pose, the only mistake is WHICH outcome has been made to happen for each choice.
#1 there should be no borders or illegality to immigration #2 there should be no banksters controlling everyone's money by force of government

Illegals are all immigrants. What's wrong is that they are classified as illegal.

No government has the right over life & death or mobility to declare who is illegal or not. If anyone on earth is least qualified it is anyone in any government.

We know they can't be trusted for anything about money, laws, police states & bribes yet you insist the most important part of freedom, mobilty for security & survival, is to be trusted to these same mafia cocksuckers?

Do you even have a brain? Try using it.

"Americans are deeply worried that illegal immigration is threatening the nation's culture and economy."

They must mean a culture of theft, obesity, and big macs.

Critics argue, "Enfore the laws we have now!"?? WTF! That is assuming that the laws we have now are effective, correct, and moral. A cursory glance at most laws on the books will reveal that the immigration system and it's laws is hopelessly inept.

Support the free movement of people. That is what liberty is about. Those people are refugees escaping hellish regimes like Venezuela, Mexican Drug Wars, and poor socialist countries. The comments on here are beyond belief.

People who oppose immigration on the basis that immigrants will suck on the wellfare system ware way off-base. The problem isn't immigration — it is the wellfare system.

People who oppose immigration as un-American disregard that this country was built on "illegal" immigration. The bloodthirsty indians were no better than the war-mongering whites, but that is irrelevant.

People who oppose immigration because it will take away jobs and lower standard of living have been living under a rock for the past two hundred years. The exponential increase in people on the planet has happened concurrently with the greatest increase in living standards in recorded history.

What about peak oil? The people crying about peak oil have been crying about it since the 1970s. They disregard technology and display omphalos syndrome. They are so arrogant as to think that humans could mine and use up millions of years of fossil fuels in a century. Get over yourself! Sub-oceanic fracking is just the beginning, and if you have any brains, you will send your children to become petroleum engineers. If you can find anyone to buy your gold on your third-world piece of land full of canned beans and ammo.

A lot of it isn't corporations, a lot of it is small businesses. The bigger corporations can hire out to Spanish speakers in ANOTHER COUNTRY and locate an entire site there in each town of their desire to save money much more than is saved by hiring an immigrant in America. MUCH cheaper.

Seems you're confused: if tax dollars are the problem then cut off the tax dollar spending. Picking on immigrants is a strawman: those tax dollars are spent by corruption for corruption no matter who/where it's spent on.

I am an immigrant to another country, and an emigrant from the USSA. I understand my host country has no obligation whatsoever to provide me with a better life. Period. Full-stop. I was not here to build it, and I have no right to suborn it for my own benefit.

I do not appeal to their naivete, their compassion, their guilt, nor the traitors within their government to provide me with my sustenance. I do not lower their standard of living, I do not demand they change their laws. I do not bring violence into their schools, I do not degrade their public spaces. I do not beg compensation for imagined grievance, nor do I drain their public coffers.

I fill out the required forms, I do not trespass borders. I stand in line. I perform as an asset, and not a liability. I produce. I pay. And everyone who will not is my blood enemy, especially those who destroyed my former nation.

Our way of life has already changed because of the amount of legal/illegal immigration we have allowed.  Who can say the culture is the same as it was before the invasion?

The problem is not immigration, the problems are:

- We have killed off 55M US children via abortion - someone has to pay SS and do those jobs “no one else will do”.  Yes, I know, illegal immigration is a net drag on the system.

- People used to come to the USA looking for opportunity, now they come looking for a handout.  How sustainable is that?

- We have not insisted on immigrants assimilating into our culture.  Example - Spanish taught in schools.  Want a good job?  Learn English.

- We have no idea who/how many are here, control the borders.  A country without borders is no country at all.

It is frankly not humane to just let people in here illegally with promises that they will get free Obamaphones etc and turn them into slaves of the government.  It is evil.

A good majority of those abortions were due to economic reasons, and many of the economic reasons, particularly poor quality employment, are the result of excess immigration.  So clamp down on immigration, prosperity will likely return, and the rate will fall.

abortion doesn't kill children, a fetus is not a child. A child is born, a fetus is not yet born. It's the most important fact.

No border = no country at all: YES. AND  THAT'S the one true hope for real freedom. Everything else is nazi slavery.

 Actually,

It is US government policies which threaten a decent way of life for the average citizen.

Refugees and foreign emigration are blowback from years of US meddling in THEIR way of life.

NAFTA and CAFTA have caused hardship for MOST of their population, forcing local small farmers into bankruptcy and food prices to rise dependent on global agribusiness.

The farcial Pentagon-CIA "drug war" has enriched drug lords and corrupted governments, both abroad and in the USA.

US support for military coups against elected governments as in Honduras and Haiti has reinforced dictatorships and quisling oligarchies.

Instead of managing a viable migrant worker program, the government has catered to businesses profiting from cheap exploitable "illegal" workers.

What's really sad is many parents armed their young prepubescent daughters with birth control before they put them on the bus. They were anticipating their young daughter might get raped on the trip. What kind of parent would send their daughter on such a trip? These parents understand that after their child has been rewarded permanent resident status they can later apply themselves and rejoin their child in America. Seems to me they aren't parent material. This is child abuse. Child protective service takes American children away from their parents if they spank them. What about sending them on a 1000 mile bus trip where they anticipate they might get raped?

Americans are bizarre.
Illegal immigrants "threaten" their way of life but taking over all of Palestine since 1948 is OK.
Freedom fighters opposing snipers aiming at women & children in Palestine is terrorism, but if it's Cliven Bundy in Nevada, it's OK to bring armed militias to be ready to shoot at the invading Feds who actually have no legal control over Nevada's land.
Americans are fucked in the head, completely.
and finally: "You're all illegal!" http://youtu.be/knHE31FtJww

Add to this the accusations immigrants who are illegal & have NO ID to get social services are accused of "draining" the taxpayers of tax-dollars while giving no regard that the Fed will print 100x amount of such an accused expenditure.
