Nigeria Declares State Of Emergency: "Everyone In The World Is At Risk" From Ebola, CDC Issues Level 1 "All-Hands Call"

Tyler Durden's picture

With over 932 dead, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued its highest level alert for an all-hands on deck response to the crisis in West Africa (that is spreading across the world). While President Obama proclaimed we are prepared and itis "not easily transmitted," it appears that is not entirely true. Meanwhile, CDC Director Frieden's "deep concerns" have been confirmed as Nigeria’s health minister has declared a health emergency as the deadly Ebola virus gained a foothold in Africa’s most populous nation, according to news reports. Nigerian authorities moved quickly late Wednesday, gathering isolation tents as five more cases of the Ebola Virus were confirmed in Lagos (the world's 4th most populous city with 21 million people). Most international flights from West Africa are also now screening passengers.

As Yahoo reports,

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday issued its highest alert for an all-hands on deck response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa.

"Ops Center moved to Level 1 response to given the extension to Nigeria & potential to affect many lives," CDC chief Tom Frieden said on Twitter.

Level 1 is the highest on a 1-6 scale and signals that increased staff and resources will be devoted to the outbreak.

"Basically this activation allows us to pull resources from throughout the agency to respond to this," said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner.

He said it was the first time since 2009 that the Level 1 alert had been issued. Back then it was in response to the outbreak of H1N1 flu.

As The Washington Post reports,

Nigeria’s health minister has declared a health emergency as the deadly Ebola virus gained a foothold in Africa’s most populous nation, according to news reports.

“This is a national emergency. Everyone in the world today is at risk. The experience of Nigeria opens the eyes of the world,” Minister of Health Onyebuchi Chukwu told the country’s House of Representatives. Nigerian authorities moved quickly late Wednesday, gathering isolation tents as five more cases of the Ebola Virus were confirmed in Lagos, a city bursting with 21 million people.

All five people are believed to be health workers who had direct contact with one man traveling from Ebola-ridden Liberia to Nigeria — making this country the fourth now infiltrated by the deadly disease.

...

“Yesterday the first known Nigerian to die of Ebola was recorded,” Chukwu told reporters in Abuja on Wednesday. “This was one of the nurses that attended to the Liberian. The other five [newly confirmed] cases are being treated at an isolation ward.”

Idris said this is the time “for everyone to be vigilant, especially with regard to relating to people who are ill.”

As Bloomberg reports,

Most international airlines flying to West Africa in the grip of the deadly Ebola outbreak are counting on stepped-up passenger screening as they continue serving the region.

Air France fliers in some cities must complete health questionnaires and be checked for symptoms, including an elevated temperature, before boarding cards are issued. Delta Air Lines Inc. said travelers are being checked at the airport in Monrovia, Liberia, one of the countries hit by Ebola.

Only two airlines have suspended flights to West Africa so far, with British Airways opting yesterday to join Gulf carrier Emirates in pulling back.

U.S. carriers “that fly to the affected countries remain in steady contact with government agencies and health officials, and have procedures in place to monitor and quickly respond to potential health concerns,” said Victoria Day, a spokeswoman for the Washington-based Airlines for America trade group.

Barack Obama says that Ebola is "not something that is easily transmitted" and that everything is under control...

According to this comment - supposedly written by someone who works in a hospital laboratoryMichael Snyder shares three quotes that we found particularly sobering...

#1 "Even in the United States, out of all the various hospitals I have worked at, there is no hope of containing anything like this. One of the largest hospitals I worked at only had two reverse flow isolation rooms. TWO, let that sink in for a minute."

#2 "Patients only show up to the hospital when they go symptomatic. So by the time they get there, they've already infected their entire family, their work group, and anyone they got within a few feet of on the way to the hospital. When they get there the ER nurses would treat it either like Flu, or Sepsis. But the whole time the patient is infecting all of them. And all of them, in turn, begin to infect everyone else in the exact same way. If this is as virulent as the WHO thinks it might be, by the time people realize what is going on, there will be more sick people than there would be beds available at every hospital in the US combined."

#3 "So don't expect miracles from front line hospital staff, we don't have the tools, and we certainly do not have the manpower. Ask anyone in the medical field how much overtime they could work if they felt like it, don't even get me started on how thinly stretched people in the industry are. Though I suppose if this does turn into something, that will become apparent very, very fast."

There is no way in the world that our medical professionals are going to be able to handle a full-blown Ebola pandemic.

Exactly, the party line....

"We’ve been treated to a series of accounts concerning Ebola tests of subjects that produced negative results. Ebola test subjects with purportedly negative results have been drawn from places such as London’s Gatwick airport, New York City, and Ohio With respect to the New York subjects, six in total have been tested, and Breitbart reports that this was withheld from the public.

It would be surprising if additional subjects are not tested in the United States in the future.

Unfortunately, whether by dint of stupidity or design, MSM sources have not conveyed certain very important information about the nature of scientific assays for disease.

This has left many in the general public with the misguided impression that when Ebola tests come back negative, we can be certain that the subject does not have the malady.

Scientific assays vary in terms of their sensitivity and specificity.

The sensitivity of an assay measures the likelihood that the assay produces a positive result when the subject is in fact afflicted (true positive). The specificity of an assay measures the likelihood that the assay produces a negative result when the subject is in fact not afflicted (true negative).

Each of these in turn has a complement. The complement of true positives is false positives, while the complement of true negatives is false negatives. False negatives are results where the subject is afflicted but the test says they’re not.

Since false negatives are the complement of specificity, if the specificity of a test is 95%, the false negative rate is 5%.

Clearly, the prospect of false negatives in an Ebola setting is one of grave concern.

One test for Ebola, the indirect fluorescence assay, is known to have a rather low specificity, and therefore a rather high false negative rate. PCR testing has also been known to miss cases of affliction.

While there are other tests for Ebola, we know that there is at least one July case in which an initial negative test proved wrong when the subject later succumbed to Ebola.

Therefore, meaningful questions to ask are:

How many testing cases will there be?
What will the responses to negative results be?
What test or tests is/are subjects receiving?
Crucially, what is the false negative rate of the test/tests?

Statistically, the more false negative test results there are, the more likely it becomes that at least one of them is wrong. How likely it is that at least one is wrong is of course a function of the false negative rate as well as the prior probability of the subject’s being afflicted, which of course turns on such factors as travel history."

Officially one patient - yet three tents - and three ambulances. This is the sixth instance of apparent withholding of important information, I can remember.

1) Mt Sinai patient - not ebola - but still isolated, I think, and no info on diagnosis

2) Refusal to disclose the location of three suspected cases (later said to be negative) in the US

3) No final test result published for Saudi man

4) Liberian minister says Moroccan case was ebola - Moroccan news said heart attack - which one is it?

5) Gatwick lady tested negative - reported speculation said she may have died of embolism/thombosis, yet no follow-up info on final diagnosis in contradiction with justified high level of public interest, and our very own Miffed have described how one outcome of ebola can actually be thrombosis.

6) Three spanish isolation tents and ambulances - one published patient

Italy used to pay Gaddafi to keep the Africans from reaching Italy, or if they did, he was paid to take them back. When the US-EU turned on him, Gaddafi said screw you and the real invasion began. With the chaos that's followed, it's only gotten worse. If Ebola gets established in North Africa, southern Europe is in trouble.

As for the geography lesson, it's my understanding that African invaders don't need to cross the Straits of Gibraltar to claim asylum in Spain.

Regardless of relevance, that report was kind of fascinating. I filed it for posterity. I love a US DOD document about zombies, that opens by explaining that this is NOT a joke, and then discusses all the different types of zombies - chicken zombies, vegetarian zombies, and so forth. The US government on what it would do in a zombie outbreak - as a writer, this is invaluable for my Kafka files. I don't know if it pertains to Ebola and maybe it does, but it's interesting either way, so thanks. The things I learn in the comments section...! Surviving something others die from is often simply genetics. Your blood group makes you resistant to certain infections. For instance, those with type O blood are resistant to syphilis. Most Native Americans are type O. This is postulated to be due to syphilis epidemics well before the New World was discovered. Early explorers and invaders brought the disease back to Europe. Groups A and B are most resistant to cholera and AB is the most resistant of all. Type A is most resistant to plague and is resistant to influenza, as well. I never get a flu shot and have never had the flu. There is also a mutation in a percentage of persons of Northern European descent. Those with 2 copies of the mutation were immune to plague. Those with only 1 copy of this mutation caught the plague, but recovered. It also appears to confer immunity to HIV. One in every 300 cases of HIV infection is a long-term nonprogressor, which means that while infected with a fully virulent form of HIV, they never progress to full-blown AIDS, controlling the virus through some mechanism that is not fully understood, never requiring medication.

Vitamin C is specifically a great idea because symptomatically, Ebola is just a massive case of sudden-onset scurvy. This was discussed in another Ebola thread here on ZH.

Of course, no one can make a buck off of vitamin C, so expect this therapy to be ignored.

Thu, 08/07/2014 - 15:10 | 5060184 cougar_w
cougar_w's picture

It will be ignored because viral infection has nothing to do with scurvy.

Scurvy is a failure of the body to produce proper collagen, a connective tissue. Vitamin-C is missing in humans, without it an important metabolic pathway creates weak collagen molecules, an important building block of the body. Over time the weak collagen leads to leasions and broken blood vessels, but this is strictly mechanical in nature. The body structural components are weak.

Ebola is hemorrhagic, meaning it destroys tissues and and blood vessels at the cellular level, leading to uncontrolled internal bleeding. You can have the best collagen in the world and ebola will leave it right where it is eating a destroying every living cell around it until you are a human-shaped bag of collagen filled with blood and necrotic tissue.

But yeah, take your Vitamin-C if it makes you feel better.

Random search "ebola virus cell receptor"

The researchers used a new bioinformatics-based approach, developed by John Chiorini at NIDCR, to identify a protein called TIM-1 as a receptor for Ebola and Marburg viruses. Subsequent experiments proved that both Ebola and Marburg viruses use TIM-1 is a receptor for infecting cells.

A further collaboration with Paul Rennert, Ph.D., at Biogen Idec, a biotech company based in Cambridge, Mass., provided the team with antibodies targeted to TIM-1 and the team found that one of these antibodies, ARD5, very effectively blocks Ebola and Marburg virus entry into cells.

The sorts of things you might go to an ER for are not the kinds of things you can treat at home.

The better approach (if you want one) is to stay healthy and not engage in risky sports or outdoor events that might get your leg broke.

It is always best to stay out of hospitals. Going to a hospital for a scrape is stupid; there are pathogens found only in hospitals that can ruin your life, or even kill you. Go for the broken leg, but keep your common cold at home.

So what does the CDC do they import the virus out of a quarantine zone. Of course they declared a level 1 after importing it to Georgia because of this.

http://www.naturalnews.com/046290_Ebola_patent_vaccines_profit_motive.html#

NaturalNews) The U.S. Centers for Disease Control owns a patent on a particular strain of Ebola known as "EboBun." It's patent No. CA2741523A1 and it was awarded in 2010. You can view it here. (Thanks to Natural News readers who found this and brought it to our attention.)

Patent applicants are clearly described on the patent as including:

The Government Of The United States Of America As Represented By The Secretary, Department Of Health & Human Services, Center For Disease Control.

The patent summary says, "The invention provides the isolated human Ebola (hEbola) viruses denoted as Bundibugyo (EboBun) deposited with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ("CDC"; Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America) on November 26, 2007 and accorded an accession number 200706291."

It goes on to state, "The present invention is based upon the isolation and identification of a new human Ebola virus species, EboBun. EboBun was isolated from the patients suffering from hemorrhagic fever in a recent outbreak in Uganda."

It's worth noting, by the way, that EboBun is not the same variant currently believed to be circulating in West Africa. Clearly, the CDC needs to expand its patent portfolio to include more strains, and that may very well be why American Ebola victims have been brought to the United States in the first place. Read more below and decide for yourself...

Harvesting Ebola from victims to file patents

From the patent description on the EboBun virus, we know that the U.S. government:

1) Extracts Ebola viruses from patients.

2) Claims to have "invented" that virus.

3) Files for monopoly patent protection on the virus.

To understand why this is happening, you have to first understand what a patent really is and why it exists. A patent is a government-enforced monopoly that is exclusively granted to persons or organizations. It allows that person or organization to exclusively profit from the "invention" or deny others the ability to exploit the invention for their own profit.

It brings up the obvious question here: Why would the U.S. government claim to have "invented" Ebola and then claim an exclusively monopoly over its ownership?

...

Carefully scripted medical theater

With this, we start to see the structure of the elaborate medical theater coming together: A global pandemic panic, a government patent, the importation of Ebola into a major U.S. city, an experimental vaccine, the rise of a little-known pharmaceutical company and a public outcry for the FDA to fast-track the vaccine.

If Act II stays on course, this medical theater might someday involve a "laboratory accident" in a U.S. lab, the "escape" of Ebola into the population, and a mandatory nationwide Ebola vaccination campaign that enriches Tekmira and its investors while positioning the CDC with its virus patents as the "savior of the American people."

Yes, we've heard this music before, but the last time around it was called Swine Flu.

The formula is always the same: create alarm, bring a vaccine to market, then scare governments into buying billions of dollars worth of vaccines they don't need.

...

Your bullshit meter should have went off when they started talking about compassion as they brought the fire to the water to extinguish it. You don't deal with fire in that manner and an infectous pandemic disease is the same fucking thing.

Let's put the story of immorality and profit gain at the expense of human lives together.

Let's start here

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-06-26/ebola-outbreak-worst-ever-needs...

This outbreak has been raging since at least May/June and the WHO has been warning about it but nothing much more said in the MSM at that time until about the week starting July 20th. We'll using zerohedge search as a reference here for that since ebola articles all start coming fast and furious around the 24th.

Now if you were a lwo brow tinfoil hat wearing racist domestic terrorist cynical dickweed you would have noticed this little ditty.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/tekmira-provides-tkm-ebola-phase-161928543...

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 21, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation (TKMR) (TKM.TO), a leading developer of RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutics, today announced an update on the TKM-Ebola Phase I clinical hold. The Company has received the clinical hold letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is preparing a Complete Response to the Agency. The Company anticipates this matter will be resolved by Q4, 2014.

Tekmira's other clinical development programs are unaffected by the TKM-Ebola clinical hold and all remain on track. The key milestones for these programs in the second half of 2014 are:

  • Presentation of TKM-HBV Pre-Clinical data
  • Filing IND (or equivalent) for TKM-HBV
  • Interim Phase IIa TKM-PLK1 data
  • Nomination of the next product development candidate

The clinical hold letter confirms that the FDA is seeking data to elucidate the mechanism of potential cytokine release and a modification to the protocol for the multiple ascending dose portion of the trial to ensure the safety of healthy volunteers.

...

So we have the FDA puting a hold on clinical trials for experimental drugs relating to the treatment of ebola and sure as shit the MSM starts the FUD campaign concerning Ebola. Something that WHO warned about over a month prior but only now do they start paying attention.

Since we know how compromised the MSM is and how they are subservent to the government as a pravda propaganda wing let's look closer at Tekmira and who they are working with.

...

TKM-Ebola, an anti-Ebola virus RNAi therapeutic, is being developed under a $140 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense's Medical Countermeasure Systems BioDefense Therapeutics (MCS-BDTX) Joint Product Management Office. Earlier preclinical studies were published in the medical journal The Lancet and demonstrated that when siRNA targeting the Ebola virus and delivered by Tekmira's LNP technology were used to treat previously infected non-human primates, the result was 100 percent protection from an otherwise lethal dose of Zaire Ebola virus (Geisbert et al., The Lancet, Vol 375, May 29, 2010). In March 2014, Tekmira was granted a Fast Track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the development of TKM-Ebola.

...

And then you also have this, more on this in the next reply to this one.

...

This work is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Project Manager Medical Countermeasure Systems (JPM-MCS). JPM-MCS, a component of the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical and Biological Defense, aims to provide U.S. military forces and the nation with safe, effective, and innovative medical solutions to counter chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. JPM-MCS facilitates the advanced development and acquisition of medical countermeasures and systems to enhance biodefense response capability. For more information, visit www.jpeocbd.osd.mil.

...

Let's see who else is involved with Tekmira

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/tekmira-receives-1-5-million-230000330.html

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 9, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation (TKMR) (TKM.TO), a leading developer of RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutics, announced today that it has received a $1.5 million milestone payment from Monsanto following completion of specified program developments. The development milestone is part of the research program under the Option Agreement Tekmira signed with the agriculture company, which we announced on January 13, 2014. The Option Agreement relates to Tekmira's proprietary delivery technology and intellectual property for use in agricultural applications. The potential value of the transaction could reach up to $86.2 million, following the successful completion of all program milestones.

...

Let's go to 8/1 now we have this

http://www.4-traders.com/TEKMIRA-PHARMACEUTICALS-C-1411938/news/Tekmira-...

...

Then 8/2 you got the CDC moving a doctor for experimental treatments to Atlanta out of compassion. Compassion my ass the CDC is patenting the virus to get their cut of royalites on this experimental treatment that the FDA put on hold until the media conveniently starts creating a panic about an outbreak that it cures and now Nigeria screaming we need this cure. So creating a panic through the media to force a treatment onto market that may not be safe for humans so a handful of people can profit on it using guinea pigs they don't have to pay to do trials on is the game here. Then the CDC makes sure to get it's cut on the deal acts recklessly and now has the chutzpah to call it a level 1 afterwards once they managed to harvest a sample of the virus to patent calling it compassion.

http://www.economicpolicyjournal.com/2014/07/a-link-between-ebola-outbre...

What's behind the ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone? Could it possibly be a US bioweapons project gone amuck? Why are US military agencies taking the lead in responding to the breakout? These are questions that need to be asked.

"There are many villages in the eastern part of Sierra Leone that are basically devastated," virologist Robert Garry of Tulane University told National Pubic Radio. "We walked into one village ... and we found 25 corpses. One house with seven people, all in one family, were dead.

"It's a very serious situation there," adds Garry, who just returned to the U.S. from West Africa. "This is about as bad as it [an Ebola outbreak] gets."

The epicentre of the current Ebola epidemic is the Kenema Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. BeforeItIsNews claims the hospital houses a US a biosecurity level 2 bioweapons research lab. That claim is unconfirmed, however, this we do know.

Analysis of clinical samples from suspected Lassa fever cases in Sierra Leone showed that about two-thirds of the patients had been exposed to other emerging diseases, and nearly nine percent tested positive for Ebola virus. The findings, published in this month’s edition of Emerging Infectious Diseases, demonstrates that Ebola virus has been circulating in the region since at least 2006—well before the current outbreak, reports Global BioDefense.

According to GBD, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases has been operating in the area since 2006, supposedly working on "diagnostic tests."

Author Randal J. Schoepp, PH. D. reports that because the USAMRIID team just happened to be working on disease identification and diagnostics in the area, they had pre-positioned assays in the region to address the ebola outbreak:

We had people on hand who were already evaluating samples and volunteered to start testing right away when the current Ebola outbreak started.

The laboratory testing site in Kenema is supported by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center-Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System. Other contributors to the work include the Department of Defense Joint Program Executive Office-Critical Reagents Program, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Cooperative Biological Engagement Program, and the DTRA Joint Science and Technology Office.

...

You have to ask yourself if that is the case was this something they let loose on purpose or escaped by accident and not a wild variant?

The possibility sure as shit is there that it could be the case which would make this whole situation even more malevolent than it already is. But human life being cheap and lack of empathy at the expense of narcissm seems to be all the societal rage these days.

It is actually several patents but the vaccine is for primates. In other words, it's experimental, for testing only. It's not even remotely ready to be used on humans. Even if the outbreak of Ebola got worse, they cannot use something like this because it could be much more devastating than the virus itself. Which is why I say NATURALNEWS.COM is not a good source.

Attack the messengar and try to undercut one portion of the message with the implication the whole message is invalid. Typical stage one propaganda attack. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't read the rest of my responses which covers the experimental part and if you bother to check the link to patent is in comment also.

As far as I understand it when patent a virus you are patenting the DNA/RNA if you can fully sequence it which means any use or treatments you 'own' the rights to that sequence. It doesn't matter if that sequence of RNA/DNA infects primates, humans  or skittle shiting unicorns as long as that sequence is the one that particular virus is encoded with. That is whole nother can of worms the whole patenting of genes and DNA/RNA sequences at the expense of the greater good of humanity for the profit of the few and implications for governments extracting taxes out of you when the Brave New World designer babies reality comes to play with the government owning patents on your DNA sequences.

You bring the water to the fire not the other way around and you know it. That the CDC did it ass backwards when they should know better since it is their job to contain these things should have been the obvious fucking tell something malevolent is at foot here.

theoretically they can demand license fees from me, if i get ebola. a patent means, you cant use a patented thing without paying fees. even i dont want any of theyr patented ebola. like percy schneiser with his contaminated fields, even not planting gmo, he had to pay for gmo plants in his fields.

is this the new way of nwo, imf & worldbank to enslave the 3.world whole world with debts? clever...

but... percy managed to make pay monsanto for the removal of the gmo plants. so this could get as well a throwback for the nwo-clan.

FWIW First vote was from front line hospital staff in the US.

Just another excuse for the Federal Reserve..

Janet Yellen-  "Oh, we had to bring out QE4 and print $100 billion a month because ebola spooked markets."

Do we no longer know the term "quarantine"? Nations are still flying into these countries?

You have to wonder just how sick these people are which choose to create these crisises. These are our leaders. Prominant politicians, bankers, soldiers, corporate leaders and more.

They will kill you with a shrug, they will kill their own with a shrug- just unlucky I guess.

You have to wonder what it will take before people choose to be responsible for their own lives, rather than depend on the charity of strangers...

Aerosolized.

It's mutated and gone into airborne transmission mode.

If that is the case "screening" at airports won't do a damn thing.

It's either that or it can survive outside a host animal for some period of time. Either way is scary and UN-containable!

Read Hot Zone, it has always survived in some animal, or likely insect (because they have no lungs, killing the host through lung degradation is a problem for the virus, too quick a "flash", 'till now?), they just weren't sure which.(now they say likely fruit bats?). Hope it does not get into bats, I suppose, if it gets in the US amok. "We" are the large primates here, and maybe Bigfoot. According to "Hot Zone" Ebola Reston has been here, just cannot kill humans. Highly suggest the book to anyone interested.

I'm sure by now everyone has seen that article from 2012 or whenever about how they suspect it can be suspsended in droplets in the air due to pigs and monkeys transmitting it in the same room without direct contact.  There was no 'proof' either way but supposedly the monkey necropsies pointed to the lungs due to the damage they found there.  How come no one has done some autopsies on any of the victims to let everyone know if it points to the lungs in humans or not.  I want to know either way right now.

You are probably talking about the restonii strain, but that one has no ill-effects on humans. Which is odd, of course, but so long as it is the case it can be ignored.

The first airline that imports an Ebola patient will get sued into oblivion, as will Emory and Samaritan's Purse if it escapes from Emory. I can't understand why any of these entities are taking the risk. (Governments are another story.)
