"Iraq Is A Catastrophe", Obama May Announce Iraq Airstrikes Imminently, NYT Reports

Tyler Durden's picture

Just in case there weren't enough potential GDP-boosting war hotzones around the world, Obama is now preparing to go back to ground zero, Iraq, where the NYT just reported he is "considering airstrikes or airdrops of food and medicine to address a humanitarian crisis among as many as 40,000 religious minorities in Iraq who have been dying of heat and thirst on a mountain top after death threats from the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, administration officials said on Thursday."

NYT adds that Obama is currently meeting with his national security team (at the White House, not on a golf course) and a decision from Mr. Obama was expected “imminently — this could be a fast-moving train.” The official adds that “there could be a humanitarian catastrophe there."

To be sure the possibility of US-launched airstrikes in Iraq is nothing new, and was reported here previously, and in fact Iraq itself requested US airborne assistance before, but conventional wisdom was that Obama would delay until there is a new Iraq government, and the former US puppet, Maliki, stepped down.  "But administration officials said on Thursday that the crisis on Mount Sinjar may be forcing their hand. Some 40 children have already died from the heat and dehydration, according to Unicef, while more than 40,000 people have been sheltering in the bare mountains without food, water or access to supplies."

How does the NYT know all this?

The administration officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. One official said that any military action would be “limited, specific and achievable,” noting that Mr. Maliki’s political party was supposed to announce a new candidate for prime minister on Thursday, but hadn’t yet.

To be sure, there is no mention that the same ISIS extremists which Obama is about to bomb are getting their weapons either directly from the US, via US assistance to Syrian "rebels" whose armaments end up in the Islamic State, or indirectly, by pillaging cities such as Mosul, where among the spoils were such US trophies as BlackHawk choppers and countless Humvees.

As for ISIS, who as we reported over the weekend have now captured the largest Iraq dam, the only question is whether their retaliation to the third US invasion of Iraq, which will surely be to release the dam flood nearby towns, water and leave Baghdad without a water source, will be worse than or equal to the Russian response to western sanctions, neither of which anyone could have possible predicted.

*  *  *

The White House's John Earnest added some more color:

  • *EARNEST SAYS IRAQ IS APPROACHING A 'CATASTROPHE'
  • *EARNEST DECLINES TO SPECIFY IF IRAQ STRIKES BEING CONSIDERED
  • *EARNEST SAYS NO U.S. MILITARY SOLUTION TO PROBLEM IN IRAQ

Perhaps you overlooked

The Obama administration and Congress have newly pledged to fully support

Israel, not just as a nation state as before,

but explicitly by speech and Congressional resolution as a Jewish state.

(separation of church and state? ...how "quaint")

[Next, I suppose, is pledging to support Saudi Arabia as Wahabbist kingdom,

or has that been done already?]

Basically we've come full circle.

We armed, trained, and funded Al-Qeada.  Saudi and the Brits directly supported 9/11.

Of course we hid that fact.  Now we reap that whirlwind.

In it's wake we launched idiotic war after idioitic war targeting no one who caused 9/11.  Took away our rights, and started treating every American like they are a terrorist.

Did we learn our lesson?  Nope.

Because then Obama, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Britain, etc. continued the idiocy by arming, funding, and training ISIS, Al-Nusra, LIFG, Ansar Al-Sharia, etc, etc.

What could possibly go wrong with following the same blueprint that brought us 9/11?

Well let's see.  Libya in shambles, our Ambassador dead.  Running arms to Syria to start another war.  Use of chemical weapons by our 'buddies', multiple times.  Now they invaded our other 'friends' in Iraq that cost us so much blood and treasure for that clusterfuck which is now clusterfuck squared.  Does a flood await?

Now Obama wants to turn on ISIS like we turned from Al-Qeada.  Gee I wonder what might happen.

Here we are in the same situation that brought us 9/11 all over again.  Wars won't stop terrorism, especially not ones focused on the people who aren't masterminding and funding the terrorism.  Not to mention the banks doing the transactions.  Ceasing funding terrorism and cracking down on Britain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc for their funding is a better way to go.

So if someone ever mentions that we learned lessons from 9/11, point out the obvious.  Not only did we not, we're currently living through the blowback of ignoring the lessons of 9/11.  Every soul that perished in 9/11 or the aftermath died in vein, because we didn't change squat.  We haven't done anything real to stop terrorism just like we never went after Wall Street following 2008.

That our failure to understand what 9/11 was all about, thanks to our gov't keeping the truth behind redacted pages, is that we're living with the consequences today via ISIS.

So if you liked the last 13 years of Al-Qeada and economic collapse, don't worry, everything you've loved will be coming back bigger and better.  More self-inflicted terrorism, and more needless economic collapse.  Just in the way we experienced before but bigger and better.  Same old shit, different year.

So when do we impeach Obama for this clusterfuck he created, and also of importance, when will ISIS strike back at us for turning on them.

The best way to take down a terrorist group is not to create it in the first place.

Call your representative to thank them for a job well done.

Jmc, A lot of what you say is plausible, but 9/11 wasn't some reaction by various factions that were ill treated by US/Israel. It was an Israeli mission from the start.

That's why I doubt a lot of your other takes on things.

Why don't you get the basic facts right, then build on that?

I have no idea what this sentence really means.

Sinjar itself has been all but emptied of its 300,000 residents since jihadists stormed the city late on Saturday...

I can read the words, and I know what their dictionary meanings are. I just have no conception what they actually denote.

...[A]n estimated 25,000 people remain. "We are being told to convert or to lose our heads," said Khuldoon Atyas, who has stayed behind to guard his family's crops. "There is no one coming to help."

In a just world, George W. Bush would be drawn and quartered.

And as the world spirals out of control because of the Community Organizing, Nobel Peace winning Usurper, a sad catastrophy is more and more evident.

Our troops are being commanded by an illegal domestic enemy of the US Commander In Chief, who has no allegiance or attachment to this country. He was put in place by the NWO and traitors in the US Government and Media specifically to deligitimize the US Constitution, and void US Citizen's sovereignty.

Natural born Citizens are those born in the US of US Citizen parents, where no foreign allegience exists according to US law.

"The Constitution does not in words say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners." Minor v. Happersett, 88 US 162, 167 (1874)

That is US law, quoting the "Common Law" of the US (law of nations-- See Sosa v. Alvarez (2004).

Obama has no right to Command US troops, and can be REMOVED because of his ineligibility (INABILITY), since A2S1C5 is a self executing Constitutional provision--- no statute is needed to enforce it. The first step back to restoring the Republic is to yank this interloper out of the Oval Office and hang all of his co conspirators in Congress.

When the Executor of the Laws is an illegal entity then there is no law, and the law is only what evil men say it is.

Soon you will hear about a SCOTUS case about this very subject, being filed as I write this. It has standing, given by Fla. election statutes, that allow voters to challenge the ELIGIBILITY of "any person nominated or elected to office, and has been working its way to SCOTUS since 11/ 2012. Now it is there.

All of you who think that Biden is worse are merely apologists of the Usurper. As Biden is at least eligible, and would be able to do NOTHING after Obama is removed.

The USA invasion was carried out against the advice of former president George H. Bush. This man may have been a CIA spook and a "Deep State" leader, friend of Israel and Bankers, but at least even he knew to invade and conquer Iraq would unleash a nightmare. So I will give credit where credit is due, when pressed to inavde Iraq, the first Bush said NO. Ronald Reagan saw the neocons entering his administration and promptly called them "The Crazies" and through them out of his administration. But that is ancient history, Bush II and America flew the flags of war and gladly and with a light heart sent in America's army and marines to devestate and capture Iraq, hang Saddam and uleash all the forces of Radical Islam. NOW, if that was not bad enough! Then America took on radical Islam, Jihadists and Al-Qaeda as agents of the USA in a bid to arm, fund and train them to attack Syria. Assad's army defeated this force, who then took their American arms, money and training to Iraq and allied with the Sunni Iraqis to create ISIS, the world's largest and most deadly force of Radical Islam. And, the Europeans contributed well over 3,000 EU passport holders to the anti Assad Jihad and thus to ISIS. These numbers are growing as British, French and German citiznes flock to ISIS. These peole have all right by law to go there and all right by law to return to Europe afterwards. Do you see where that is leading?

What can you say about Bush and Obama and their Iraq wars? Nothing good. This disaster has cost us taxpayers 2 trillion dollars and thousands of kids lives. Yet, not punishment for those who did this, in fact, that same bunch are seeking to win the power in Washington to up their game. Keep your eye's on Ukraine, it has the potential for massive disaster, IF the neocons mover forces to Ukraine to fight against the East Ukrainian ethnic Russians. WWIII is not out of the question.

the missiles in EE aimed at moscow can take out C&C in a few minutes. putin will then effectively be head of a tribe of cossacks. the possiblity that EE will be more secure in the long run is even less likely, so a preemptive strike is not advisable. once we take that chessmove off the table, a long guerilla style war such as we see right now could go on for years. and if the global economy craters the USFED/EU/IMF banking cartel will have nothing to dangle as bait in front of the sought after prize, these former soviet satellite states. if the Chinese are paying attention they will stay on the sidelines, let these old cold war foes drain each other of resources, and then they can emerge as the global superpower, much as the US did by staying out of W2 for as long as possible.

Well you know, we all want to change the world

But when you talk about destruction

Don't you know that you can count me out

Don't you know its going to be alright

all right, all right

You say you got a real solution

Well you know,

We'd all love to see the plan

Yo ask me for a contribution

Well you know

We're doing what we can

All I can tell you is brother you have to wait.

All right, all right.

Well you know we all want to change your head

You tell me its the institution

Well you know

It's better to free your mind instead

But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao   (Saddam? Bin Laden? Bush, Clinton, Obama, Bernanke, EU.  take your pick)

You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow

Don't you know it's going to be alright.

From the 1960's to today.   The more things change the more they stay the same.  The words of this song are as appropriate today as they were when written.   That is the problem with politics and politicians.  Repackaged problems with repackaged solutions lost on generational turnover.  Older generations dying  along with young people not knowing or understanding  the TRUE history of the world allows the political/government games to continue all as if the problems and current solutions are new.  Same old shit for thousands of years with the worlds populace carrying the leaders water and picking up the tab with blood and treasury while the "government elites" line their pockets and make choices that fuck the ordinary citizen.   Been doing it since the time of the Pharaohs.

Only the government could come up with the plan of simultaneously dropping humanitarian aid along with performing airstrikes and it be considered a viable option and good idea.  There is irony there somewhere even if the MSM refuses to recognize it.

Either save them or kill them or just get out of the fucking way and let be what will be.  Pick a side and live with it.  Only the US government can manage to be half pregnant for so long.   Haven't we proven to ourselves that we cannot be both their savior and their executor.

Admit this pooch has been screwed and nothing you do now will change that fact.  I don't even think we can pretend it's about "them" anymore.  What we do now should be seen as saving ourselves or NOT depending on next steps.

To paraphrase something someone posted on this sight about a month ago... 'Iraq needs another emergency airdrop of democracy'

Seems cruel (to Iraqis) to say "considering" humanitarian relief. Paraphrasing Yoda, "Either do or don't. Don't say "Maybe".

Reminds me of Radio Free Europe quasi-promising military support to Hungarian revolutionaries, which emboldened many, leading to more bloodshed as no backup was coming.

Things have deteriorated to the point that Americans are using every opportunity to take their eyes off what is happening in Iraq, the country has become a train wreck and is rapidly morphing into a failed State. It is often unwise to take your eyes off a problem for long because when you look back you might find that things have gone horribly wrong, this is the case in Iraq and Syria.

The lyrics from a song "slip sliding away" come to mind as a way to describe the massive investment made in Iraq by America. Recently a group called ISIS shocked much of the world by swiftly capturing Mosul in an offensive that allowed the group to take control of major parts of northern and western Iraq. On June 29, 2014 the Islamist militants declared  an Islamic "caliphate" in an area straddling Iraq and Syria. More on this subject in the article below.
