Ontario Hospital Treating Nigerian Passenger With Ebola-Like Symptoms

Tyler Durden's picture

It appears - just as CDC Director Frieden feared - that an escalation of the Ebola virus in Nigeria would mean major risks. While it is too soon for results, City News is reporting that Brampton Civic hospital is taking precautionary measures after a patient who recently travelled to Canada from Nigeria came down with a fever and other flu-like symptoms. This comes on top of the fact, as Time reports, that the CDC has received dozens of calls from all over the United States about people that had gotten sick after traveling to Africa.

As City News reports,

A Brampton hospital is taking precautionary measures after a patient who recently travelled to Canada from Nigeria came down with a fever and other flu-like symptoms.

The patient arrived at the emergency department at William Osler Health System’s Brampton Civic Hospital earlier today.

“Osler sees and treats several patients a week with similar symptoms because of its proximity to the airport and over the last week, has put in heightened infection control protocols as a precautionary measure due to the emerging situation in West Africa,” the spokesperson said.

...

“Osler medical experts are working closely with Peel Public Health to confirm a diagnosis,” the hospital said.

Canadian Health authorities have issued this statement:

Canada is already implementing many of the measures being advised by the WHO, including maintaining preparedness to detect, investigate and manage people with Ebola in the unlikely event that a case arrives in Canada. Canada has the capacity to perform diagnostic testing and to manage any ill travelers through the Quarantine Act.

In addition, hospitals in Canada have infection control systems and procedures in place that are designed to limit the spread of infection, protect health care workers, and provide the best care possible for the patient.

There are no confirmed cases of Ebola in Canada and the risk to Canadians remains very low. In fact, there has never been a case of Ebola in Canada, thanks in part to Canada’s close monitoring of the situation and international involvement in rapid diagnostic testing and health surveillance.

The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends that Canadians avoid all non-essential travel to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone due to the ongoing Ebola virus outbreak.

*  *  *

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told TIME on Tuesday that it’s received several dozen calls from states and hospitals about people who are ill after traveling in Africa.

“We’ve triaged those calls and about half-dozen or so resulted in specimen coming to CDC for testing and all have been negative for Ebola,” CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said, adding that the agency is expecting still more calls to come in.

The outbreak is "out of control" according to CDC...

I think I'll just get something on hand to go out painlessly, should the worst happen.

Probably not a bad plan, even without the thought of hemorrhagic nastiness.

Being dead doesn't scare me - how I get there is something of a concern.

Its mystifying why Western countries won't, at least, limit air travel in and out of the afflicted nations.  I am not suggesting they cancel everything altogether but make people who want or need to travel test or be subject to some quarantine.  I know that will have economic consequences but they will look like a drop in the bucket compared to what happens if this thing is perceived to be more widespread in the west.  Even if it isn't airborne and easily transmissible, you can bet that folks will stop traveling etc.

The thing is, even if it is impossible to get without exposure to bodily fluids, a long-haul flight or the use of airport facilities by someone sick with this virus will present plenty of opportunities for them to spread the disease via vomit, spittle or diarrhea that stays on some surface.

See the thing is, I don't think its fear of racism.  I suspect they are holding off for solely economic reasons (airlines worried about the knock-on effects or trade partner fall-out for example).  However if this thing starts spreading in Europe or the Americas, watch out.  The economic impact will be staggering as folks avoid going out, traveling or congregating in groups.  The airline industry will get crushed, hospitality will get worked too.  It feels like they missing the forrest for the trees here.

The other problem, I suspect, is if they limit flights in/out of the afflicted nations, it wil just force those who want to travel - and who might be potential carriers - to travel to other surrounding countries where they can fly out with less problem.  And that may well cause the virus to spread there.  There are no easy solutions but it seems they should be trying right now while there is still hope of preventing many cases outside of Western Africa.

For all we know it has already been in Europe and America for up to almost three weeks now.  We wouldn't know until symptoms show.  Every day is just one of 21 and we start the countdown again tomorrow.

I'm sure there isn't enough money in USA-Africa flights to pressure the FAA to NOT close those routes.  A single near miss in Israel got that shutdown - nobody dead or anything.  We have a thousand dead Africans (official numbers anyway) and this can spread but they aren't closing it down.

Seems perfectly logical.

Well of course. Africa isn't filled with God's Chosen People. Dual-citizens run America from Israel. It's only rayciss anti-semite to do economic harm to Israel, Israel dictates it isn't rayciss to do economic harm to Africa. Just like Israel says it isn't rayciss to force birth control for black Ethiopian-migrating semite Jews entering Israel since they aren't the trans-Russian white-khazar-"Jews" who are given top priority for entrance as "semites" to "Israel".

No: the migration of people must flow. The only "illegal" immigration is that which stokes public anger when that anger serves political ends. Otherwise the globalist initiative requires people to flow, as per their say-so (not yours as a free human), and a massive population boost (despite poverty or the sense to use a condom, get a vasectomy, etc.)

If you mean there are hospital workers travelling to Nigeria, then you and they and the hospital administration need to have protocols in place concerning how they are allowed to return. The worst thing would be for them to come back into a panic situatiion, be placed on leave or in quarantine, and all the bad feelings that come from something like that being unexpected.

Now is not the time for denial. Now is the time to start thinking seriously about how to control a descent into chaos.

The party line dispensed by gov and media inc should obviously be taken with reservations. See Fukushima:
“Lessons From Fukushima: Governments and the Media Will Deceive the Public and Withhold Vital Information, Leaving Citizens to Create Informal Information Sharing networks--
This paper will demonstrate that the Japanese and U.S. Governments withheld vital information from their citizens about the direction and risks of Fukushima radiation plumes and the degree and consequences of radioactive fallout. Second, the paper will demonstrate that the mainstream news media, including The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, were complicit in hiding information about fallout levels, dispersion, and plant conditions. The U.S. media are commonly recognized as more independent from government than Japanese media. This disaster demonstrates that the U.S. mainstream news media censor information, even when public safety is at issue. Finally, this paper examines the spontaneous creation of information sharing sites and the subsequent development of a robust network of citizen-supported information sites in Japan and the United States....Lesson 1: Democratic governments may elect to withhold vital information in the event of severe disasters; Lesson 2: The Western media may censor vital information...."

"Doctor: 'I'm tired of gov't glibly downplaying something as important as this'...CDC still considers the likelihood of the disease spreading in the U.S. as almost nonexistent. That rosy scenario is not shared by all medical doctors. And even if the threat of an outbreak here is low, some physicians insist that the CDC should be doing more to prepare doctors and hospitals for a worst-case scenario. Dr. Elizabeth Lee Vliet, MD, and a past director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons, is one of those doctors with concerns."

Its easier to lie about the consequences of nuclear contamination because of the lag between exposure and symptom, and the corresponding difficulty in proving causation (even though common sense says its obvious, propaganda can trump common sense in this situation).  I don't think any amount of government propaganda or minimization will be effective in the event of widespread bleeding from the eyes and ears, although I can imagine them trying:

'and in other news tonight, watch out, cases of 'brainquakes' are being widely reported around major population centers in North America.  This common illness is even more common this year due to the unusual POLAR VORTEX which has brought the cold weather that is known to cause brainquakes.  Symptoms of brainquakes include vomiting, bleeding from eyes, ears, nose mouth, and death.  In other news, it turns out all those fears about an Ebola outbreak were unfounded and there are still no reported cases in North America.  For CNN, I'm Heywood Jablowme'.

Agreed. As Wikileaks, Greenwald, and Snowden have all shown how brazen, shameless, and ruthless gov is about classifying practically all pieces of information broadly defined as 'sensitive.' The word "cure" originated with the "science" of keeping dead meat fresh using salting or sugaring.

Cure is not heal. That is why the western medical establishment is always trying to "cure" us, not heal.

With our excessively salty and sugary and preservative filled diets, we are all cured for sure...

Healing, now that happens naturally...physicians (not DOctors) would send people to seasides or mountains to change their environments...clean air/water/food is the first key.....

I've even heard about what could have been its origin a long, long time ago.
There was a project to produce plastic directly in plants. DNA manipulation was required. RNA virus would be needed to splice in the DNA affordably. The project failed because the cost was higher than petroleum extraction at oil prices 10 years ago. The RNA virus, however, I'm sure went along happily splicing in a plastic-producing gene-splice into anything it contacted, including us.

its disgusting.

Dr. Alan Jamison, Morristown TN who had been working in the same clinic as Kent Brantly, returned from Liberia on July 25th and put himself into quarrantine at his home to wait out the 21 day incubation period as a precaution to protect his family.

He last had contact with ebola patients on July 19th, just 6 days prior to his flight.

Apparently his travel was on a commercial flight and not coordinated by the CDC as his "daughter picked him up at the airport" and he advised the CDC upon his return of his whereabouts and history.

A medical professional with known contact to the disease decided to board a plane instead of waiting out the incubation period in Africa.  The assumption is that he was not contageous if not showing symptoms.  Now we learn that this is a new strain that may or may not behave like previous outbreaks.

The American, Patrick Sawer who died in Nigeria had stated that yes he had contact with his sister (who later died from ebola), but she was not sick at the time, so maybe spread is possible prior to symptoms.

Obviously he believes there is some risk that he has the virus but still made the solo decision to potentially import the disease into the United States.

This instance is a clear indicator to me that the situation is NOT being controlled at any level.

Great volunteer humanitarian, but when he sensed his ass was in the wringer he jumped on a plane to potentially bring this killer home to his community.  Why the #$@& didn't he sit out the 21 days in Africa!?!?!?

N95 masks seem to be easy to come by but I'm interested in the N100 masks and can't find them. Also, we need to educate ourselves on the difference between N95 and N100 and any other protective gear we'd be able to buy.

I think Ebola IS airborne.

This winter's flu season will be more interesting than usual.

Going from non-airborne & an established virus to airborne isn't something nature does very often, as in like, almost ever. In the history of life.
It would be up to a weapons-lab to manage it & that I know of, they aren't that clever yet either.

That hospital in Brampton is about 10 years old so the facilities are fairly new but it was built under a p3 model (private public funding) so they have no money to run day to day operations. If you were going to get Ebola this is the last hospital in Canada you want to be in.
