The "Recovery" In One Chart: When Americans Can't Even Afford To Buy McDonalds For 9 Months In A Row

Tyler Durden's picture

There is endless propaganda... and then there are McDonalds sales.

It is the latter that is by far the best indicator of how the US economy is progressing when stripped of all the bullshit seasonal adjustments, rhetoric and lies from the administration which focus on what is a glowing recovery, for the 1%. As for everyone else, they can't even afford a dollar meal.

The proof? McDonalds same store sales for the last month, July, cratered by 2.5%, far worse than the 1.1% expected driven by a 7.3% collapse in Asian sales, but the number we focus on, US comp store sales, was a devastating 3.2%, on par with the worst decline in history, and the 9th consecutive month in which McDonalds has not posted an increase in US same store sales.

Here is your recovery:

Well, I can AFFORD it, but I can't DIGEST it.  The only time I go to McD's is if I haven't shit in the last month.  It's like magic.  15 minutes and I'm running for the crapper.  They should change their name to McTurboLax

"As for everyone else, they can't even afford a dollar meal."

Not quite. The reason sales are punk is because they STOPPED the dollar meal promotions. It was KILLING franchisees profits and they were complaining like crazy.

I don't want to diminish the fact that the masses are indeed financially stretched, but this is the information age.  More information is not conducive to increased sales at McDonalds.

First post after being a daily reader for four years. I was waiting to have something useful to contribute. McDonalds is not alone in the declining sales category. I own a couple of Subways and last month comparable sales were down 5% YOY and 6% YOY for the state according the reports I get from corporate. Prices have not changed, just more folks moving down menu or not getting drinks.

Most people have very few discretionary expenses they can cut, when trying to belt tighten. Eating out, gym membership, event tickets, etc. Major expenses are pretty intractable without moving. Thanks for the confirmation; more people are economically pressured, than what the media portrays.

My daughter insisted on an Old McDonalds meal. What an inedible pile of shit, that clown must be hypnotizing people. If you must eat junk food try Checkers, way better burger and fries.

Not sure why all the ragging on McD's. Guess like all things big, it's an easy target. Anyway, don't eat at the place much, but stopped by yesterday for breakfast while on roadtrip with my son. Got one of the breakfast sandwich meals, and it was OK. Not something I'd want as steady diet, but not bad for once in a great while. Have to agree, however, that they may be a lot of things, but cheap ain't one. Breakfast meal for 2...$12. Ouch! If we had more time could have eaten at a regular sit down place for not much more.

Lol what are sales going to look like when new min wage kicks in?

People in mexico would be skeptical of this kind of news.  Everyone

Here thinks Mcdonalds is Highclass food. Its like shopping at walmart or costco or sams.  Just because its gringo dont mean it aint shiiiit.

I will add though alot of people prefer carls jr bk or wendys here over mcdonalds. Its weird thet stores are Empty here in mexico.well at lleast not as full asthey should be.

Saw that the McDonalds at the Innovation Center in Illinois had installed self ordering payment kiosks and that that equipment nominally gets deployed within 4 years of testing nationally. Maybe I read it here.  Getting old.

I think the real challenge is how to 100% automate ANY fast food operation.

The race is on to lower those pesky labor costs.

Now if only the robots could build robot customers that had actual value in the economy to hold currency (bolts or nuka-cola bottle-caps) to make purchases.

The future is sublime.

Obama's folks simply don't have the money.

The Big Mac meal is well over 7 dollars which now puts it in competition with higher end food including Chipotle. I thought McDonalds owned a part of Chipotle.

I do think McDonalds for the dollar cup of coffee but I rarely buy anything else because the quality and cost are poor. I can probably find two pounds of hamburger for 8 dollars and make eight to ten much better burgers out of them

I went to the Jets game last night on an 8 dollar stubhub ticket and 10.50 in NJ transit costs. The game was terrible and really boring.

I used the water fountains and did not buy anything. Hot Dog 6, Meatball sandwich 9, Burrito 10, Water 5 and a beer 10.

I came home and had (in Jets stadium prices)

2 slices of pepperoni pizza 14

Hamburger and fries 12

2 beers 20

3 shots of whiskey 30

This would have been 76 dollars at the stadium. The ticket was originally priced at 100 so with the 10.50 transit, I would have spent 186.50 for myself and only myself if I fully wanted to enjoy the game. It is amazing how life has changed so much, so quickly.

The middle class can't afford to eat at McDonald's?

And who says there's no good news to report!

I think they're pricing themselves out of the market some customers such as myself.

As for myself, I rather go to my favorite sit down local burger joint and sit at down the bar and network.

As far as I'm concerned paying nearly $7.00 for sawdust and pink slime is not an option when I can pay $8.99 for real beef and get full body hugs from big hootered babes half my age.
