WHO Declares "Health Emergency", Admits "Stretched To Limit" On "Out Of Control" Ebola Outbreak As Nigeria Cases Soar

Tyler Durden's picture

CDC Director Frieden's worst nightmare is coming true - Nigeria, of which he was "deeply concerned" due to the population density in Lagos for instance, has admitted 139 patients are now being monitored for Ebola (up from 8 mere days ago). This, along with "the outbreak moving faster than we can control it," drive the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare West Africa's Ebola epidemic, an "extraordinary event" and now constitutes an international health risk. As Reuters reports, the agency said that, all states with Ebola transmission - so far Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone - should declare a national emergency, as former WHO official warned "governments appear to not have been engaged as necessary."

Nigeria has escalated rapidly - just as CDC Director Frieden had feared:

  • *NIGERIA SAYS TWO MORE CASES OF EBOLA CONFIRMED IN LAGOS
  • *NIGERIA SAYS 6 SUSPECTED CASES OF EBOLA BEING INVESTIGATED
  • *NIGERIA SAYS 139 PEOPLE BEING MONITORED FOR EBOLA

As Reuters reports,

The Geneva-based U.N. health agency said the possible consequences of a further international spread of the outbreak, which has killed almost 1,000 people in four West African countries, were "particularly serious" in view of the virulence of the virus.

"A coordinated international response is deemed essential to stop and reverse the international spread of Ebola," the WHO said in a statement after a two-day meeting of its emergency committee on Ebola.

The declaration of an international emergency will have the effect of raising the level of vigilance on the virus.

"The outbreak is moving faster than we can control it," the WHO's director-general Margaret Chan told reporters on a telephone briefing from the WHO's Geneva headquarters.

"The declaration ... will galvanize the attention of leaders of all countries at the top level. It cannot be done by the ministries of health alone."

Contagion is still not wel lunderstood...

It also said inexperience in dealing with Ebola outbreaks and misperceptions of the disease, including how it is transmitted, "continue to be a major challenge in some communities".

"If we do not in global solidarity come together to help these countries, they will be set back for many years," Chan said. She noted the three hardest-hit nations had only begun to emerge and rebuild after "years of conflict and difficulties".

What is fascinating is that WHO does not ask for international trade or travel bans

  • *WHO: NO GENERAL BAN ON TRAVEL OR TRADE
  • *WHO: SHOULDN'T BE INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL OF EBOLA CASES, CONTACTS

because:

  • *WHO'S CHAN: STOPPING AIRLINE ROUTES WOULD HURT ECONOMIES

Which is a somewhat stunning reason and not shared by Russia:

If flights from the countries affected by the Ebola virus are not halted, the disease could reach Europe and become a new plague, Alexei Pushkov, the head of the State Duma international affairs committee, said Tuesday.

“Unless all flights are stopped from Ebola affected countries, there is a risk it will reach Europe, becoming the plague of the 21st century,” Pushkov said on Twitter.

Projected Ebola cases from this thread:

Here is a quick calculation I created to see in theory based on the monthly increases of Ebola starting at 1.86 in March to the size of the world's population how long could this disease kill and spread if left unchecked and that spread rate is not slowed and no cures are found. Why does Ebola scare us in our worse nightmares? These numbers tell you why.

At some point (in the distant past) the scenario got so bad that no-one can really be frightened any more. The ebola scenario goes like this:

Ebola, due to the idiocy of WHO and other "global" fucktard institutions, becomes a global pandemic.

The economy tanks, due to so many people dying.

450 nuke plants melt down, due to lack of spare parts and the death of the operators.

Those humans that survive the ebola are killed by the radiation.

Yeah, so don't try to scare me with numbers. Oooooh, numbers are so SCARY!

I like to think the last act of a nuke plant operator would be to disengage the fuel rods before he dies of Ebola.

Fri, 08/08/2014 - 09:32 | 5064725 Leraconteur
Leraconteur's picture

Everyone did get it - 3% of everyone died.  Natural immunity had it burn out in a few weeks as it moved through major cities.

Three percent of all humans...ALL HUMANS... died...with 3% mortality rate.

This is 55%, but dropping. That's good, but it is also bad. Pandemics begin with a lethal variant that tones it down to maximise infection of the largest number of hosts.

The hosts being us, we humans.

So this could be from 3% to 50% mortality if/when it goes global and infects everyone.

3% of everyone dying not bad enough for you?

This comment is really helpful </sarc>.

So spanish flu mortality rate is not known. They estimate between 10-20% of people who caught it died. The spanish flu had high infection rates. But only a 2-7 day infection period.

Ebola has very low infection rates but much higher mortality rates and this strain has a longer infection period (maybe). The thing about ebola is that no one knows the infection rates or the infectious period. WHO says you are infectious as long as your blood and bodily fluids contain the virus but not when that begins/ends.

Right now it seems like the death rate graph looks to be approaching exponential territory.

Here's the problem. TPTB do irrational things like not sealing airports and then offer excuses that stagger the mind.  Then they refuse to answer relevant questions regarding their actions, both before and after.  Like what is going on in the bio- lab located inside a hospital in Guinea near "ground zero".

Just one week ago today, CDC was saying Ebola was not a threat to the US. Ebola has been around for a while, so I doubt it has origins as a man-made weapon - however - it does appear as if it is changing on its own or that man is tinkering with it.

Many people think that mankind has dominion over animals (and plants) to eat for food. Of course, viruses and bacteria think the same thing about humans.

If ebola was weaponized, then there is already a vaccine.

If the WHO was really serious about containing ebola, they would recommend a total travel ban.

If dollar dominance was really important, ebola would be either a threat or an advantage- which is it?

Governments and the WHO have been caught by surprise.

Makes me worry that we still don't know the situation. It might be one of those things they never tell us about, we only can figure it out reading between the lines.

I also worry that TPTB have become morally compromised and are actually more worried about the global economy than they are about public health or a terrible pandemic. I hate to think like that -- I don't tend toward conspiracy thinking myself because it rots the mind -- however it fits with their overall pattern recently of lying about bad news and pretending they know what's best for everyone else, meaning themselves.

We'll see, maybe I'm wrong and things are simply moving too fast for adequate coverage. If we start seeing even less news even as the situation materially deteriorates then it means I was right after all, and they are going to let us figure it out on our own.

The first cases of Swine Flu were detected in Mexico in December of 2005.  Swine flu broke out in the U.S. April 15, 2009.  On September 19, 2009 one of our ninth graders died from it in a Publix parking lot less than two miles from a hospital.  The boy’s father pulled into the parking lot and tried to resuscitate him when he stopped breathing.  A dozen or so of our students were hospitalized and then it passed.  It took five months for the outbreak in California to travel to central Florida and kill one of our students.

My hope is that Ebola travels more slowly than influenza.  My fear is that it got on a plane and landed here two weeks ago.

At this point many of us here on ZH now have first hand experience of people becoming seriously ill from the "vaccines". I know two toddlers (one died), two elderly ladies who's sharp brains rapidly degenerated following vaccines.

Its horrible to lose a child and in a car park is just horrific; but I also fear their "solutions for prevention" and have less and less trust with their methods of detection.

Ebola has been around for a while, its scary but do not over focus, there are things closer to home that will protect your kids in real time. For example: Reduce exposure to cell towers & WIFI (coca cola bottle top shaped blood cells ain't good), ban GMO foods, ban processed food, use balanced herbs etc for preventative health....the point is that there is a huge amount in our power - we're made helpless victims when we focus on something that is going to attack us by surprise from faraway.

A general comment, be alert and practical don't get paralyzed so-to-speak by the fear and power of the word Ebola, use it to prompt a better lifestyle within the bigger picture.

Blessings, Cloud9.5 a sad personal experience.

Leave it to the 'exceptional' US to have audacity of bringing the shit home with them because we are too advanced to let anything happen.

Hope you got top notch nurses.  I spent a couple months in the hospital a few years back and I seen an awful lot of fuckups in that amount of time including some on myself.

Last but not least.........you only have a few short days to hug your favorite asshole if you do catch ebola.

It is clear the CDC is carrying corporatist water for the nation-state cartels.  Their credibility should be rated accordingly.  The lesson we're going to learn here?  There is no substitute for effective leadership, which cannot be blinded by multiculturalism, commercial corruption, or the con of 'global government'.  In times of great risk, you look after your own first.  Government must be sized to do exactly that:  look after your own.  I could give a flying fuck what the CDC, WHO, UN, IMF, BIS, or NATO propounds.  They have gotten us into this mess, a mess which could cost 10s of millions of lives.

“Only one form of contagion travels faster than a virus. And that's fear.”
-Dan Brown - Inferno

I highly recommend this book.  There are so many parallels to the Ebola outbreak, it's downright eerie.

My wife and I were talking about this yesterday, then she mouthed the words I've been waiting to hear since I started reading ZH, "Honey, I guess it's about time you made me my own tinfoil hat."

My wife did the same thing for a long time, Doc.  Then one day, when she was trying to ignore me, I yelled about as loud as I could, "WAKE UP! If there were something horrible headed this way that could destroy us, would you want to know? Well, there is."

She was much more attentive after that.

Sometimes ya just gotta verbally choke a bitch.

Dan Brown novels are ridiculous.  I read deception point on vacation last month, super entertaining but just absurd.  Hot Zone just came so maybe after that I'll get to Inferno.  Congrats on your wifes hat.  I like to think my wife could get there some day but unlikely.

Anyhoo, good luck with the Missus.

I said it in a previous comment: there's no WHO anymore. What was once a serious medics organization has turned into a lobbies-infested swamp. Of course a travel ban would be necessary, but don't count on this new version of the WHO to make any sense.

Immigration’s Human Dirty Bomb—A Weapon of Mass Diversity
By Thomas Martel on August 5, 2014

Congressman Todd Rokita (R-IN) is on the receiving end of a typical Main Stream Media Two Minute Hate for mildly suggesting that, with the Obama Regime’s border nullification and “Ebola circulating,” we need to “know the condition of these kids” that are being put in American homes. [Congressional Republican Says Central American Immigration Children Could Spread Ebola, by Ben Mathis-Lilley, Slate, August 5, 2014] But if anything, Rokita understating the danger: current immigration policy is in effect a human dirty bomb.

A dirty bomb is a standard explosive laced with radioactive material. Up until now, we’ve avoided a terrorist dirty bomb. But the human dirty bomb seems unstoppable. By combining mass immigration with disease, to say nothing of social pathologies like out of wedlock birth, ignorance, and Hispanic supremacism, the immigration we’re suffering through now is (to adapt Iraq War terminology) a Weapon of Mass Diversity.

The free flow of information is the best feature of blogs. I welcome the steady diet of links, perspectives, and information on ZH. I don't see that as fear mongering. Expressing heightened concerns is legitimate, especially given the geopolitical realities--false flag attacks seem to be intensifying.

“I am concerned about the prevalence and pathogenicity of the situation, which is too much even for Ebola. Too many people are dying. I don’t rule out that there’s something artificial here… What is happening with Ebola there, could there also be something man-made about it?”

Experts are voicing opinions that harnessing ebola as a weapon wouldn't be difficult and that this scenario isn't a small risk.

more Ebola stuff...

the hindu times last night stated three suspected cases in iso in Dwarka India no results as of yet. Reuters this morning ran confirmation of the first case in Uganda so it is now spreading east. flutrackers.com has a translated story from a Mexican source citing health officials as confirming that a student in Mexico city is positive for the virus, nothing about this in the MSM but the Latin times did pick it up however noted it was unconfirmed by Mexican government officials.

stay tuned.

hmm. i suggest we take the dead bodies from Sierre Leone and Liberia out of the streets, rig them into some paratrooper kits, throw them in a C-130, drop them over Anbar province / ISIL home of the zombie and you have just solved two problems in one.

now that idea deserves a peace prize.

Expect most hospital personnel to not report to work as this disease spreads. Police, paramedics etc will be more worried about their own family than anyone else's. Retail personnel will not want to be exposed to the public. The fact that this virus can live for two to three weeks on any surface and still be infective means you can be infected by simply touching a door knob or handling a sales receipt.

Can it be spread by flies? Mosquitos? Fresh food that has been handled by others? Can your pet bring it into the house?

You'd better get yourself ready. Start developing better hygienic habits, and that also means teaching your children proper hygiene too.

This all appears very paranoid and many will laugh, but a year from now, if a pandemic does start, it won't be so funny!

The World Health Organization is the same group of globalists who brought us the swine flu scam.

The hallmark of that particular piece of bullshit was that, after a while, they stopped testing people for H1N1 and simply diagnosed them according to symptoms. I'm sure they'll do the same thing with Ebola. How else would they be able to produce inflated numbers of the "infected."

And, while Ebola is making headlines in the U.S., two cable TV series about plagues are on the air: The Last Ship and The Strain.

I just went through the entire 5 pages of this blog.  There was one small section with the mention of Silver ions/colloidal silver/cs.  It was dismissed as not possible for this "medicine" to cure Ebola.  Also that there was no clinical study.  I am attaching a link to a "supposed declassified DOD clinical study" and this link is the PowerPoint (???) presentation.

The link opens a PDF file

I am not a microbiologist nor a medical person.  Is this presentation legit??  If legit, does it have merit as a possible cure/preventative.  Who can help explain this presentation?
