Obama Celebrates The 50th Anniversary Of The Gulf Of Tonkin Resolution By Bombing Iraq

- U.S. President Lyndon Johnson commenting on the Gulf of Tonkin incident

Fifty years ago yesterday, on August 7, 1964, Congress passed the now infamous Gulf of Tonkin resolution, which led to a massive escalation of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Without a formal declaration of war, the resolution permitted President Johnson to take “all necessary measures” to support South Vietnam, including armed forces. This resulted in 58,000 dead Americans and well over a million dead Vietnamese, both civilians and military personnel.

The resolution was passed based on President Johnson’s claim that the destroyer USS Maddox had been attacked for the second time in one week. While the Maddox did indeed suffer from a torpedo attack on August 2, 1964 after a raid on the North Vietnamese coast by South Vietnamese gunboats, the second attack was a pure fabrication. Furthermore, Johnson never discussed the background on the initial incident to Congress. Had Congress actually knew what happened it may have prevented this resolution from passing, thus saving millions of lives. Here’s a quick summary from History.com:

On August 2, shortly after a clandestine raid on the North Vietnamese coast by South Vietnamese gunboats, the U.S. destroyer Maddox (conducting electronic espionage nearby) was fired on by North Vietnamese torpedo boats. Two days later, in the same area, the Maddox and another destroyer reported that they were again under attack. Although these reports now appear to have been mistaken, Johnson proceeded quickly to authorize retaliatory air strikes against North Vietnam. The next day he gathered congressional leaders and, without divulging the circumstances that might have helped provoke the torpedo attack, accused the North Vietnamese of “open aggression on the high seas.” He then submitted to the Senate a resolution that authorized him to take “all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.” The resolution was quickly approved by Congress; only Senators Wayne Morse of Oregon and Ernest Gruening of Alaska voted against it. Later, when more information about the Tonkin incident became available, many concluded that Johnson and his advisers had misled Congress into supporting the expansion of the war.

Even worse, within days of the attack, Johnson reportedly told State Department official George Ball that “Hell, those dumb, stupid sailors were just shooting at flying fish! So he clearly knew he was escalating a war based on a fabrication.

Things clearly haven’t changed much when it comes to U.S. foreign policy. After all, how did Barack Obama celebrate the 50th anniversary? By bombing Iraq again of course.

The shell game can only go on so long.

The funniest part in this whole tragic comedy is, we were the ones who were called razzzists. For us lighting matches to burn LBJ's "massah's" house down, we were called teabaggers. For us saying its beneath the diginity of anyone to be forced to accept charity, we were called bigots.

Well, thats all fine and good in the political realm but reality is very different and it doesn't take many generations to figure out they've been lied to.

Lies get buried with the dead.

Most go to sleep never waking up to the lies. We've been lied to for hundreds of years(vatican), show me a generation, not 10% of one, that has EVER woken up. Vietnam War Protest was as close, as a nation, we will EVER get to being awake. LOOK AROUND YOU, this is as awake as you will ever see it, NSA and their friends(canada, england, australia, israel, et al) are taking over the internet monster that ALMOST got away on them. They know if domestic casualties are low enough anything goes with the sleepy public. Drone wars are easier to work with the sheeple.

58,000 didnt figure it out in vietnam, over 4000  died Since "Mission Accomplished" in Iraq(5/1/03), 1.5mill iraqis will not know the lies either. Afghanistan over 3000 good people that were LIED to by their government.

Terrorists are created, your leaders are very good at it.

-the shell game will continue, all those who don't want to play will be ignored or dealt with.

SAME AS IT EVER WAS

Many (most?) of the people condemned by victorious liars for their own corrupt purposes were the best friend ever in history to them. America was rare and raw and real and OK. An eternal special people. Once in history. I was there! Deal with that. Don't choose what you want to believe about it. Big parts that are not are weakly accepted as generally accepted. You guys accept that BS as much as you do everything else. The truth of history will set you free. And help it all make sense.  When I sober up.

"Rumours began circulating that Baker was involved in corrupt activities. Although officially his only income was that of Secretary to the Majority in the Senate, he was clearly a very rich man. Baker was investigated by Attorney General Robert Kennedy. He discovered Baker had links to Clint Murchison and several Mafia bosses. Evidence also emerged that Lyndon B. Johnson was also involved in political corruption. This included the award of a $7 billion contract for a fighter plane, the F-111, to General Dynamics, a company based in Texas. On 7th October, 1963, Baker was forced to resign his post. Soon afterwards, Fred Korth, the Navy Secretary, was also forced to resign because of the F-111 contract."

cryptic Freddie.  I had to research who this might be talking about:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Baker

"Baker was investigated for allegations of congressional bribery using money and arranged sexual favors, in exchange for votes and government contracts....  Attorney General Robert Kennedy, was able to arrange a deal with J. Edgar Hoover to quell mention of the Rometsch [JFK tart]  allegations in the Senate investigation of Bobby Baker. Hoover successfully limited the Senate investigation of Baker by threatening to release embarrassing information about senators contained in FBI files. In exchange for this, Robert Kennedy reassured Hoover that his job as FBI Director was secure..."

what's your point?

As far as I can tell every important player hated JFK and so didn't squawk a peep when he was taken out - they were either in on it, or happy he was gone.

Anyone interested in the true origins of the American war in Vietnam, should read L. Fletcher Prouty's book. Prouty was a retired USAF colonel. He worked at the highest level of US Special Operations. --
A major spark for the Vietnam War included the transport of more than 1.1 million rural, tradition bound people from the north to the south by the US government. The Americans supported these northerners, who would later make up the new government in the south. The existing people in the south who were supplanted by the new northerners, were kicked off their land and were driven to banditry in order to feed themselves and survive. They were branded as the 'Vietcong'. They were branded as 'communists' though few of them could have told you what that word means. They were driven by hunger and desperation.
More importantly, elements in the US government and military-industrial complex got one of the new Asian wars that they had been working on even before WW2 ended. (The supplies for the invasion of Japan were diverted to Korea and Vietnam after the atomic bombs were dropped. Those supplies and weapons were used by the forces that would be at the heart of the Korean and Vietnam wars. Ho Chi Minh was initially supported and supplied this way.)

Does this all sound familiar ?

Nothing new under the sun.

In a "voluntary' military there are four basic reasons to join. Political Ideology, a paycheck and/or other compensation, to be part of a group with a strong sense of purpose or potentially the legal right to kill. Hey! I remember too well watching the Gulf of Tonkin live with a grave looking LBJ and his horn rimmed glasses on the B&W RCA! It was three summers prior to the Race Riots in Detoilet and instead of enjoying a rare warm Michigan summer evening outside playing, "...the PRESIDENT was on TV."

My, how times changed. When word spread that "The President" would be on TV, everyone's plans changed.  I recall dutifully feeling enraged that some distant foe would challenge our suprerior forces, never thinking that we were all being lead down a path to empty our very own Treasury.

Many good books on the VietNam era, the best being "The Sorrow of War" by Bao Ninh--all from an NVA soldier's perspective and the classic "Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam" by Neil Sheehan. A page turner.

Every reader here at ZH owes it to him or herself to visit ALL of Vietnam from one end to another and draw their own conclusions. Travel by bus, train, perferably bicycle. Stay off the main highways if you wish to live. All the VN hamlets are interconnected by a series of nifty---mostly paved ---rice trails. They are not on any maps.

GPS experience is advised like a good Garmin unit or similar. Now I am canvassing all the minor roads of Thailand. VietNam is unique. We had good intel....refused to listen to it.

As an older adult, Vietnam is now synonymous with lies and murder.

yes but earlier today on this site i read of a group called isis.

it seems it got all the jewish folks on here hot and bothered about muslims.

a jewish fella gave a link to a catholic site showing horrible things that seemed to get the jewish and the goy folks real worked up about the savage muslims kill them all now kind of thing.

tonkin was fakery according to the folks in the msm and on here isis is real some folks even said they need to be stopped because thry will come to america real soon.

isis is real not like the gulf of tonkin.

isis has been on the cnn fox and the bbc history channel for years we know so much about the isis leader shimon elliot elliot simon he more famous than elen digenerate, matt demon or gorge cooney combined in a black saturn cube.

these forums are like being back in the middle ages sometimes burn the witch burn um like it was long agos befores oliver cromwells times.

if the jewish folks on here say isis is real and it has nothing to do with israel i say believe them they are are close friends of are hard working presdent they must be he just gave them another 10 thousand depleted uranium bombs for gaza.

obarme just gave another 500 million dollars he must really love them jews fellas not in a gay way just in a talmudic religion kind of way.

tonkin is long time ago.

what we should do is the jewish fellas on here should have a star of david the sin bull of the saturnic cube as an avatar so when they write the stuff about  anything we can believe them without argument.

we can see satans star so we will automatically understand that the words are rabbi truth.

On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. The USS Liberty Memorial web site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men who died.

Kerry and McCain are the best examples of people who should have learned from VIETNAM but did not.

I don't know which one is worse: Kerry, the 'Nam vet "peacenik" who wants to bomb every country in Asia and Africa; or ex-POW McCain who is in favor of global military intervention and secret torture prisons.

I remember LBJ on TV talking about the Gulf of Tonkin. I was 14 in 1964. And every year after, at 15, 16, 17, I hoped the Vietnam War would be over before I graduated from HS.

Sadly, after graduation, I enlisted. No Army for me, or USMC. I was in the Wild Blue Yonder.

At 18, Dubya and I ran away and went AWOL from the USAF.

Dubya and I both "lit out for the territories," as that Civil War deserter, Mark Twain airily described his own flight from an unnecessary war. Dubya headed east towards Alabama, (perhaps inspiring that fictional character Forrest Gump), and I headed north to Canada in a stolen car. Somewhere in Texas our paths may have crossed (we were both there four years). We may have exchanged a salute at some Air Force function. Maybe we flirted with the same Trinity College coeds. Maybe the future "war president" passed me in his little red convertible while I hitch-hiked across the state. I crossed the Texas north to south and east to west on two occasions between my unlawful A.W.O.L --"Away without official leave"--and his flight much later.

But military officers and enlisted men seldom mix. The levels of human society, like fossil beds from different epochs, appear inches apart in the bedrock of American society, but the reality is impossibly distant, separated by eons of bloodlines. "He was born at the intersection of two elites," wrote Michael Kingsley of George W. Bush: "The eastern WASP establishment and the Texas oiligarchy." If we had perchance met, Dubya and I, it was a brief but unmemorable moment. The fate we both shared in common was flight, a youthful yearning for horizons unfettered by rules and restrictions and the wide open road.

Three days and fifteen hundred miles later, I was back exactly where I started: the gatehouse at Lackland air base. I had returned to "face the proverbial music." For my actions I would spend 35 days in the medium security stockade there at Lackland and receive three years probation as a first-time offender. By George, I felt relieved, felt I had gotten off lightly.

Dubya headed east around 1972, disappeared for almost six months, and never did face the music. The Alabama air national guard commander said he never saw Lt. Bush. Desertion, dereliction of duty, is defined by being AWOL longer than 31 days. I suppose a future president enjoys certain youthful privileges that others do not, but why one military person should be exonerated and another not, seems unfair, seems un-American.

But a precedent was set that day in Texas, when Dubya and I "lit out for the territories." Therefore, I suggest that each officer or enlisted man, stateside or in Iraq, follow the same example set by our Commander-in-Chief. Run away for six months or a year. Run away to Rio, Maui or Miami; you'll feel better for it. Run away. Work on your tan or--as George reportedly did--work for a man running a political campaign.

Leave the killing and maiming to others; you have better things to do. Like loving and living. After six months or a year, return for that honorable discharge. What was good for the goose is good for the gander. Who knows, maybe one day you too might become president. Just don't forget to pack your family connections.

And that's my true story. What happened after? The USAF took me back and made me a driver.  MOS: Vehicle Operator.

Usually it's not necessary to give the Puppet-in-chief a private showing of the Zapruder film.    Every candidate from either party has been vetted long before and has been made to commit a blackmail-able offense.  The carrot of millions post-office mean that they don't need to be shown the stick.

TNTARG is being a bit harsh on the American people and their "voting".   I wonder what country he's from -- is there a real functioning democracy ANYWHERE?

The "humanitarians" in this administration, and amongst the neocons (!), are now pointing to the conquest by ISIS of the last Christian cities in Iraq as a reason why we need to go back to Iraq. That has got to be some gruesome joke, because when Christian cities in Syria were being overrun by US-supported Islamic rebels – the same ones who are now rampaging through Iraq – we heard not a peep from any of these people.

Since Putin is not playing ball they had to use it somewhere.

We don't hear much about the SU25s in the Iraqi Air Force. The US Marines clearly don't want them to get too much experience.

LBJ had to pretend the US was actually attacked, and without provocation.

But now the US has an "interest" in every corner of the globe.

So the US gets to bomb whether actually attacked or not.

Nowadays only takes an imagined potential "threat" to US "interests"

or to the alleged "interests" of putative "allies"

to get a US beat down by droning, bombing, or black op assassination.

The US, however, still likes to pretend it neither initiates nor provokes violence.
