As Obama Launches Another Iraq Assault, Here Is An Undercover Look Inside ISIS

Tyler Durden's picture

While the biggest geopolitical news of the past week was Obama's announcement he would become only the fourth president in a row to order military action in Iraq, explicitly targeting the ISIS jihadists, the far bigger question are the developments that spurred the administration to finally act.

The NYT reports that "as the tension mounted in Washington" the catalyst for Obama's decision was sudden developments surrounding the Kurdistan capital, Erbil. "Kurdish forces who had been fighting the militants in three nearby Christian villages abruptly fell back toward the gates of the city, fanning fears that the city might soon fall. By Thursday morning, people were thronging the airport, desperate for flights out of town. "The situation near Erbil was becoming more dire than anyone expected," said a senior administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe the White House’s internal deliberations. “We didn’t want another Benghazi."

The reason for this is that the US has an embassy in Erbil: that falling to ISIS would be the supreme punch in the gut for an administration whose foreign policy has become the butt of all global jokes. What's worse, now that ISIS had taken control of a critical dam in Mosul (which as we reported earlier controls water levels on the Tigris levels as far as Baghdad, and whose capture "shook Kurdish officials and fueled the sense of crisis" as it gave ISIS all of the leverage) the US embassy could be flooded should ISIS blow up the dam in question.

In other words, Obama merely took to arms after the threat of another massive foreign humiliation became all too real and when the reality that the Kurdish defense was about to fall. Of course, the actual stated reason for intervention was different, a far more noble one.

At a 90-minute meeting in the Situation Room on Thursday morning, Mr. Obama was briefed again about the plight of the Iraqis stranded on Mount Sinjar. Members of an ancient religious sect known as Yazidi, they were branded as devil worshipers by the militants. The women were to be enslaved; the men were to be slaughtered.

Officials told Mr. Obama there was a real danger of genocide, under the legal definition of the term. “While we have faced difficult humanitarian challenges, this was in a different category,” said an official. “That kind of shakes you up, gets your attention.”

At 11:20 a.m., Mr. Obama left the meeting to travel to Fort Belvoir, Va., where he signed a bill expanding health care for veterans. He had all but made up his mind to authorize airstrikes, officials said, and while he was away, his team drafted specific military options.

When the president returned to the White House barely an hour later, he went back into meetings with his staff. By then, there were news reports of airdrops and possible strikes. But the White House “hunkered down,” an official said, refusing to comment on the reports for fear of endangering a nighttime airdrop over Mount Sinjar.

Mr. Obama did not announce the operations until dawn had broken in Iraq, a delay of several hours that added to the panic in Erbil. Reports of explosions near the city at dusk on Thursday night sowed confusion after Kurdish officials said the United States had begun airstrikes on the militants. The Pentagon flatly denied the reports.

The rest is now well-known (the full breakdown can be found here), and culminated with Obama's Thursday announcement as well as the immediate launch of bombing raids on ISIS militants.

Here is the most recent Iraq situation report courtesy of the Institute for the Study of War.

Within the past 24 hours, ISIS seized Mosul Dam. This capture provides ISIS strategic advantage over the Iraqi state. The dam's collapse would severely damage vast areas of the country where ISIS seeks to achieve military victory but has encountered heavy resistance. Also, ISIS now controls electricity production to Mosul and the group extends its claimed territory farther north. ISIS continues to fight the Peshmerga in Makhmour, south of Mosul and the IA in Dhuluiya, north of Baghdad. Although the United States conducted two rounds of targeted airstrikes against ISIS held territory outside of Arbil and Mosul, it remains too early to determine whether or not the group will adjust its military strategy. ISIS is likely hardening territorial boundaries for the Islamic Caliphate east of Mosul, but ISW assess ISIS will not attempt to seize Erbil. Still, fear of an ISIS attack on Erbil has peaked.

So now that the attention is once again back to ISIS, whose dramatic success in forming the caliphate was lost to the world following the return of hostilities in Ukraine and the escalation of the second Cold War, here are, courtesy of Vice News, the first two parts of a series looking at life in the Islamic State caliphate. Vice News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

In part 1, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base.

In Part 2 filmmaker Medyan Dairieh meets an Islamic State member from Belgium who works to indoctrinate some of the youngest members of the group. He also gains further insight into the minds of Islamic State fighters as they host celebrations and military parades featuring American tanks and APCs seized from the Iraqi army.

"How the Constitution was designed to protect rather than undermine the rights of States"

  • Irrelevant. Do you disagree that it has failed to do so, as of this time?
  • States' rights merely bring the problem closer to home. For example, European nations are roughly the size of various American states, explain how the difference in scale is meaningful or beneficial.

"Why Congress, not the executive branch, was meant to be the dominant branch of government"

  • Have you seen Congressional approval ratings, or seen of any of the legislation the Congress has created and legislated over the course of its existence?

"and why the Founders would have argued for impeaching many modern presidents for violating the Constitution"

  • Imputation of what a person, let alone a group, "would have" done is extremely dubious at best; Probably they'd be imprisoned without trial and never heard from again, or simply ignored

"Why an expansive central government was the Founders’ biggest fear"

  • Imputation of what a person, or a group, actually thought based on necessarily incomplete accounts of what they said, mostly in public - again this is an extremely weak basis for any argument
  • The position of the Federalists, who were Founders, proves this assertion false

"and how the Constitution—and the Bill of Rights— was designed to guard against it"

  • Irrelevant. Do you disagree that it has failed to do so, as of this time?
  • The Bill of Rights was an addendum which many strongly opposed, it is widely agreed that it easily could easily have failed to have been ratified.

"Why the founding generation would regard most of the current federal budget—including “stimulus packages”—as unconstitutional"

  • Again, irrelevant. How would they enforce this opinion? They would be treated the same way as, e.g., Ron Paul.

"Why the Founding Fathers would oppose attempts to “reform” the Electoral College"

  • Irrelevant
  • I wasn't aware there was anyone who opposed reform or outright destruction of the Electoral College, I'm not sure what the rational is, even for supporters of democracy, which the Founders, on record and by evidence, were not.

"Why the Founding Fathers would be horrified at the enormous authority of the Supreme Court, and why the Founders intended Congress, not the Court, to interpret federal law"

  • Because that would make any sort of positive difference whatsoever?

The problem here is, you are completely ignoring the Articles of Confederation, so you've already fallen for the approved version of history, in which the centralized federal union (which very nearly had a king and no Bill of Rights) = good, while the decentralized and explicitly voluntary confederation of independent states = bad. Constitutionalists are just another variety of Koolaid Conoisseur.

Of course the bottom line is, the Constitution has completely failed to do any of the things we are told it was intended to do. The one and only important thing it has succeeded in doing is binding the formerly independent states together under central control.

nonsense, "the Constitution" is not an agent.

People ignoring the Constitution is what caused the problem - from Supreme Court justices fixing society {in their view} by ignoring the law and "interpreting" the Commerce Clause, for example, to mean far more than it was supposed to mean etc.

Your argument is misplaced. The C isn't perfect, but it is absurd to blame a piece of paper for the failures of the American people in stopping a runaway federal government.

Obama really hasnt faced alot, he has been acting as though he is voting present on many issues on one hand on the other he has exasperated difficulties, notice the funding of the Muslim Brotherhood in syria, which we are now bombing in Iraq, Notice the Failed attempt of foriegn policy in Egypt. How about the shrinking middle class? Healthcare costs that has impovished tens of thousands leaving many with out healthcare...Its not about being anti anything ... its about doing the right thing even if it goes against your ideaology.

Surf, you are absolutely correct. I am reminded of a passage in Mary Shelley's book Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus.

"Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgust?....Listen to me, Frankenstein. You accuse me of murder; and yet you would, with a satisfied conscience, destroy your own creature. Oh, praise the eternal justice of man!"

The question that must be asked is, which is the more dangerous monster, the creator or the creature?

Obama not only funded and supported ISIS along with SA and Qatar but has created the staging for the breakup of Iraq with the Kurds already voting on an independent state and take their oil with them. ISIS gets the west Iraq plus east Syria with its own oil and a corridor for the SA pipeline to europe and the rest goes to Maliki and Iran

by USA advocating independence and or federation for Kurds  - the exact solution Putin proffers in East Ukraine - the rationalization of why it is "different" for Ukraine will be really really twisted - how Putin gives up the Uk pipeline with all of this is beyond comprehension

.gov troll. It's not "naturally born", it's "natural born Citizen". You and your fellow travelers always try to change words and the meaning of them. That's how liars roll.

This is the SCOTUS definition:

"The Constitution does not in words say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also. These were natives or natural-born citizens, as distinguished from aliens or foreigners." Minor v. Happersett, 88 US 162, 167 (1874).

The purpose of the requirement is to ensure allegiance and attachment. Qualities that Obama OBVIOUSLY does not have. When there us no LEGAL executor of the law, then there is no law. That's why it's important.

Arius, you're such a worthless libtard tool. Go suck Obama's dick.

There, done with the ad-hominem stuff.

Obama inherited the Iraqi mess, true 'nuff. But history will lay to Obama's charge the fact that his foriegn policy has no overarching goals. What is Obama's final objective concerning foreign policy? That's right, there is none, except perhaps, vaguely, to simultaneously stretch out dollar reserve currency status while destroying America's cultural, legal and Constitutional foundations. I don't know if you're old enough to remember Nixon's "peace with honor" schtick in Vietnam, but basically, it was a bankrupt policy that kept the war going for 4 more years. Nixon campaigned on getting the US out of Vietnam, and then expanded the war, etc.

Obama's foriegn policy is the same X 100. When you need to get up and leave the table, you need to just get the fuck up and leave the table. Obama is really good at using executive orders to go around Congress, but when it comes to using the power he actually he does have Constitutionally, as the Commander in Chief, to order the amred forces to do something, Obama dithers and executes half measures and pussified rear-guard actions that have no strategic big-picture value. Obama is so fucking incompetent in his overall military vision it is almost incomprehensible that someone can be that horribly fucking clueless.

Bottom line, the man doesn't know what he wants to do becuse he doesn't know who he is or what he stands for. Hell, at least Bush knew he stood for American domination of oil and control of the entire planet, and even though the plan was cockamamie and built upon lies and murder and criminal conspiracy, Bush followed the plan. Obama doesn't even have that much.

Historians will someday point to the defeat of Ron Paul by the Republican establishment as the loss of the one last opportunity for America to return to greatness. This nation is fucking finished, and Obama lit the fucking match. not through diabolical genius, but through wretched incompetence.

Fuck you, Arius, you dick-sucking Obama robot troll.

The problems only escalate when you are a poor leader. The great leaders and problem solvers know how to make the extraordinarily complicated seem simple when others look back at the solutions. Obama is simply way over his head unless you believe like I do that this chaos is often welcomed as part of his plan to transform the country.

Obamacare, IRS, VA, Fast and Furious, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Ukraine, Israel, etc. will only get worse as it is seen how ineffective his actions taken are toward solving the problems. All designed to weaken this country's leadership in the world at the same time. Do not forget this is his domestic and foreign policy on display and it is by design that the United States no longer take the lead in foreign affairs. This is very dangerous but that's the very liberal new world order plan we are on with Obama at the helm.

While I appreciate your empathy for "the put upon" Obama, much of what he is facing is due to his foreign policy failings.  By not engaging in and projecting a strong foreign policy, Obama has in many ways allowed these various fronts to develop. So your assertion is almost as pathetic as Obama's apology to the world early in his Presidency.  Will he apologize for his failings and the global discord he has allowed to develop?

Fuck the Muzzies.  Cowardly pigs.  Clean up your own shit.  Start by killing these radicals and their families.  Wipe their seed from the earth as a lesson that if you take out the sword for Allah....we are going to jam it into your ass and kill your children before we take it out.

Duffy's picture

Freddie, I don't know about Soros or Israel/Jewish stuff but I noted that its coverage of Ukraine was simply a more MTVish or sham gonzo mainstream media type hatchet job.

VICE was great, they have some fantastic stuff up on youtube...  But Israeli citizen Simon Ostrovsky's romp through Eastern Ukraine completely ignored the genuine fascists and violence that was part of the Maiden Square story, basically ignored US interference, the role of NGOs, and he set out, mere weeks after a violent coup overthrew a government, to try to convince everyone that there was no legitimacy to the coup amongst ethnic Russians, or to the desire of the majority of Crimeans to rejoin Russia rather than be ruled under the new putsch regime.

When Ted Turner sold, or was forced to sell CNN, when Disney was sold...  the trend was toward homogenization of message.

Shane Smith does not strike me as a full of shit kind of guy - but did he get paid off, or, possibly, is it just that they let different VICE reporters approach topics with their own bias and viewpoint, which is fine, too - I'm prepared to accept anti-Putin dispatches so long as they also are willing to present anti-Kiev ones.

My sense is that, like The Young Turks, which I also used to really like, but jumped the shark for me when covering the fake flyers about Jews in Eastern Ukraine which were complete fakes, and possibly tied back to the ADL in NY...all of a sudden Cenk is reporting on what looked like obvious propagand as truth, seeming to forget that it was the Kiev putsch regime that had used actual street Nazis to help take over buildings, and that the Russians lost tens of millions fighting Nazis...

Medis gets to a certain size and corporate interests buy it up, and that means homogenization of message.

Things are heating up fast in Anbar Province, Erbil (or is it Irbil) and points north in Iraq.  President Obama to deliver a statement on Iraq at 10:25 a.m. Eastern time today, real short notice.  Looks like more heavily armed U.S. soldiers will be setting up shop in the Kurdish enclave.  Which means the remote control war with drones and precision (?) bombing may not be enough, so out come the ground attack aircraft and possibly, some M1A1 tanks for the Kurds.  Now did someone tell the CIA to stop the direct deposits for our former freedom fighters in Syria who now work for ISIS?  Stopping those war wages payments will really get those ISIS mercenaries hopping mad.

Sat, 08/09/2014 - 11:36 | 5069784 Paveway IV
Paveway IV's picture

"...Looks like more heavily armed U.S. soldiers will be setting up shop in the Kurdish enclave..."

Er... you're a couple of years late, junction. The U.S. has a huge base somewhere around Irbil for mercs and JSOC death-squad types. They're in the process of expanding it for those guys. 500? A couple thousand? There's a whole illegal covert U.S. army there protecting the Kurdish oligarchs. They're pretty heavily armed. You're right, though. More will show up.

Notice the first bombings were near Irbil and not anywhere near were the Yezidi civilians are under attack. Sure, the two are always reported simultaneously. The American public is tricked into assuming we're bombing to save them when - in fact - we're bombing to either protect our mercenaries and CIA thugs, or to protect the corrupt KDP leaders on the U.S. or Israeli payrolls.

Sat, 08/09/2014 - 12:00 | 5069881 thamnosma
thamnosma's picture

Your analysis rings truer than any other.  So is the US bases around Irbil actually still a US base or was it turned over to the 'locals' for mercenary use?   Seems an excellent method for claiming we have no troops in the country while still having troops in the country.  CNN, etc. never touch this facet, but not out of ignorance.

Sat, 08/09/2014 - 16:17 | 5070671 Paveway IV
Paveway IV's picture

It's a 'secret' base. Just like the secret ones in Jordan used to train Fake al Nusra and Fake ISIS. And the secret ones in the Ukraine used to support whatever oligarchs the U.S. has deemed worthy of our covert support. Their our 'little green men'.

No idea if the particular one in Irbil was ever a U.S. base during the war. Its location isn't known or reported - Google reportedly has it blurred out. The locals in Irbil know where it is and that it's a U.S. base staffed by spooks, mercs and special ops. We know it exists because of the huge government contracts for all the crap they needed originally to build it and now to expand it.

None of the mercenaries are hired by Iraq - I don't think they need any aside from Maliki's private army, i.e., 500-strong security detail. The mercenaries at Irbil are whatever homicidal psychopaths the U.S. hires from Blackwater/Xe/Academi currently called "U.S. Training Center" or the once-Brit mercs WatchGuard International/Satelles Solutions/Greystone - they all work for the same company now. Of course they're not called mercs, they're private security contractors

The Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) is largely made up of active duty U.S. military special ops types that staff the death squads. Think of them as human drones - ex-judicial, no oversight, death-squads working the kill list for Iraq. Its secret... so soldiers in it don't count as 'boots on the ground'. They're an entirely different group than the officially assigned, regular unit special ops guys like the Green Berets sent over to train Iraqi troops.

"...Seems an excellent method for claiming we have no troops in the country while still having troops in the country..."

Absolutely. And besides, why would the U.S. intelligence community want to bother with things like the U.S. constitution, the rights of other soverign nations or prosecution for war crimes by the International Criminal Court? That would make their job hard, and they want easy

Another consideration in Iraq is that the few rational, un-corrupted members Iraqi government were actually trying as best they could to rebuild the country. They were doing so with the understanding that a semi-autonomous Kurdish region and the Northern oil fields were always going to be part of Iraq. The U.S. didn't want Russia to have access to any oil in Northern Iraq, so they just ignored the Iraqi government and made side deals with the Kurds. If the Iraqi government ever got organized, they could nullify all those contracts. So why would American/British/French oil companies think the contracts would be valid? Well, because they planned to engineer independence for Iraqi Kurdistan before anyone could interfere with their side-deal contracts. They effectively cut Russia out of the Northern oilfields by getting in early - before it was legal - and bribing Kurdish officials. After the Kurds declare independence, the oil contracts will be retroactively acknowledged as legal and there won't be any left for Vlad.

Relevance to the topic is that the Iraqis don't want the dishonest Americans around and damn sure don't want their secret squirrel base in Iraq. So it get's built in (the future) Kurdistan. The Iraqis can't touch it now, and they won't be able to touch it once the U.S. 'facilitates' Kurdish independence from Iraq.

Let ISIS be the Ebola of the Middle East.

Seriously....we should just sit back and let them take over the whole thing.  Then we'll see what the Iraquis and the Syrians and the Saudis and the Persians (Iranians) are made of.  We'll see if their strong, tough, macho rhetoric matches their abilities.  We'll see what REAL Islamic brotherhood is really like.

Finally....it's about time to find out who is willing to do what it takes between the Shiites and the Sunnis.  But on a LARGER scale....it's time for the world to finally see the quality of the Muzzies.

The Middle East is the perfect cage.  Let them have a "to the death" cage match.  Like the animals they are.  And then....once the dust is clear......it will be VERY clear who the target is.  And then we can go in there and exterminate them with no mercy.

And the world will not mind.....for they will have seen years of these animals hacking and slaying each other.  The bloody mask will have been ripped off.  The true horror revealed.

I think ISIS is the greatest thing to hit the Middle East ever.  The truth is now going to be revealed.

<just exterminate the ISIS, starting with their leader>

By now, it is too late.

After the Iraq invasion failure and leaving Iraq, the USA left behind an absolutely useless government counting that Iraq would disintegrate into many US/Israel friendly entities. But gangsters and terrorists do not always cooperate with their old masters. Now, ISIS have lots of money and they don't need their old masters.

As of now, US/NATO is back to Iraq. It will cost a lot of money, manpower commitments, and lots of uncertainties with ISIS terrorists moving to EU and the USA.

The bottom line: CIa & Mossad fucked up the situation beyond any repair. The USA badly need Iran cooperation but Israeli will not have any of this.

Of course Kurdistan has now laid claim to Kirkuk, with its vast oil deposits. The plan for the Northern Iraq-Haifa pipeline, an Israeli aspiration from the time of that country’s establishment can surely also not have been far from Netanyahu’s mind. An independent Kurdistan, which indeed it has enjoyed almost entirely within Iraq, since 1992 – and immediately betrayed the Iraqi State by inviting in Israel and the CIA – would herald the planned dismemberment of Iraq.

It is darkly ironic, that whether relating to the break up of their lands or ghettoisation of those of Iraqis and Palestinians, this mirrors the plan of Adolf Eichmann

Let us know when that "Caliphate" is based in Jerusalem, Mecca, or Riyadh.

Clearly some of us are not that easily fooled or distracted with BS and noise.

You should watch the above videos and this one:

WARNING GRAPHIC PHOTOS (RAW) - ISIS begins killing Christians in Mosul, CHILDREN BEHEADED

as for Obama, yes, he is the creator of ISIS through his interference with the Assad regime who have been fighting the ISIS for sometime. I find it odd that his 'bombing' of ISIS is less than what the ISAF troops expended in friendly fire acts in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

spread the word.

This is sick. I just can't believe this has been happening just several thousands kilometers far from here.

Obama with the comlete US goverment should be hanged for this. The US citizens should be aware that they are responsible for having their officials supported genocides and wars abroad.  The time is coming when they will be called out by the rest of the world for stopping this madness. I just feel americans are not prepared to act properly, the population lives in dreams.

This "army" was created by the West and the Gulf States to murder Gaddafi.   It has mutated since then.

They did not mutate.  They have always been like this and that is why Obama chose to use them to fight in Syria.  They gove the weapons and now they are using them against our allies.

I highly advise anyone with a weak stomach to not click on that link, if you've already seen what these motherfuckers are doing you already have a general idea of what is happening.

They're worse than animals...they are the face of evil, they all need to die.

I truly think it's more evil than that.  Sure some of Obama's pimp underlings are naive Ivy School marxists but the engineers of these policies know exactly what they are doing.  That move against Libya and the creation of this "international jihadist" army were very much planned to create chaos in the region.   Why have our "enemies" only been secular Arab leaders?  Assad Jr. is nowhere near the same as his father.  Now we've destroyed that country because he is "bad"?  Same for Libya.   They tried it in Egypt but it was too much for them.   Iraq -- better off than under Saddam?  Who's kidding who.

Gaddafi was moving against the islamic snackbarian murderers infesting Benghazi when Hillary Clinton stopped him. Hillary, obombya and mcstain installed AL Qaeda as rulers in Libya. A  totally illegal war crime.

Hillary loves herself some murdering islam and is one of the worst traitorous dhimmis in America. Bitch should be hung by the neck until dead.

They also set up a central bank in Libya as soon as they had got a foothold in Banghazi.  That to me was the biggest clue as to motivation.

Only initially, eh?

Sir, I think the US government has more intelligence on these groups than do you or I, and I also don't think these people think in the simplistic binary terms the hoi polloi do.

No, my good man - I think they deliberately supported psychopathic barbarians, and that it had nothing to do at all with getting rid of Assad to help the Syrian people, but more to do with energy, money, and {as seems likely} Israel.  I don't think the neocon plan to remake the ME went away when Obama came in.

Why do you [if you do]?

This is typical for the Muzzie.  They look at their enemies as sheep.  Hence the sawing of the neck with a blade.  Bleed the animal dry.

It's a sacrifice to the blood god Allah.

They did the same thing 1000's of years ago but to various forms of moon goddesses.

Not to mention sacrificing their children on heated braziers to Moloch.  Broiled them to death.

Nothing has changed.  Muzzies or moonies.......the Middle Easterner is a pagan animal.  They will always be at the throat of themselves and their neighbors.
