Ukraine Fighting Rages On As Russia Calls For Another Ceasefire: Ukraine Demands Total Surrender

Tyler Durden's picture

With Ukraine shelling having killed 52 civilians in the city of Horlikva (Donetsk region) over the last two weeks alone, Russia is growing increasingly vocal of the need for a humanitarian cease-fire (notably with Germany also "concerned about the humanitarian situation" in Ukraine). However, as AP reports, fighting raged once again today as Ukrainian forces killed 1 and injured 10 in Donetsk, ignoring calls for a cease-fire. Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said the only way for the rebels in Donetsk to save their lives would be to "lay down their arms and give up." Meanwhile, just as we warned, the mainstream media is starting to pick up on the 'other' border dispute that Russia is involved in as Putin mediates talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Death toll include 9 children in city in Donetsk region, state-run Russian news service RIA Novosti reports, citing Horlivka’s health department.

71 people hospitalized between July 27 and Aug. 10, according to RIA

As Russian concerns about the humanitarian crisis grow...

Russia is in talks with Ukraine, UN humanitarian organizations and the International Committee of the Red Cross on urgent relief supplies to the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"We have given priority in our talks with Ukraine, with the International Committee for the Red Cross and with UN humanitarian organizations to the necessity to dispatch relief aid to the Luhansk and Donetsk regions without delay," Lavrov told reporters in Sochi on Sunday.

There is neither power, nor water in Luhansk, where hospitals have no essential medicines at their disposal, Lavrov said.

"All this is a sign of the most acute humanitarian situation. I discussed it over the past two days with the Ukrainian foreign minister, the U.S. secretary of state, the British secretary of state for foreign affairs, the leader of the International Committee of the Red Cross and with other colleagues," the Russian foreign minister said.

"This issue is urgent and cannot be delayed, and it is under the Russian president's control. I am convinced we will manage to reach agreement on relief supplies shortly," Lavrov said.

Ukraine 'agreed' on their terms...

Poroshenko issued a statement late Saturday saying that Ukraine was prepared to accept humanitarian assistance in eastern Ukraine. But he said the aid must come in without military assistance, pass through border checkpoints under Ukrainian control and be an international mission.

Poroshenko said he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed German participation in such a mission.

But fighting continues and the chance of agreement seems slim...

Fighting raged Sunday in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk despite a request from the pro-Russian rebels for a cease-fire to prevent a "humanitarian catastrophe." Ukrainian officials demanded that the insurgents surrender instead.

In a press conference in Kiev, Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said the only way for the rebels in Donetsk to save their lives would be to "lay down their arms and give up." He said the Ukrainian side hadn't seen the rebels show any real willingness to cooperate.

"If white flags come up and they lay down their arms, nobody is going to shoot at them," he said. "(But) we have not seen any practical steps yet, just a statement."

The situation is deteriorating and doubts are rising...

"This is a real war! It's impossible to live in this city, I've been sleeping in the basement for the past week," said Inna Drobyshevskaya, a 48-year-old lawyer in Donetsk.

"We don't want Novorossiya (New Russia) for this price," she added, referring to a term used by rebels to describe the parts of eastern Ukraine seeking independence from the government in Kiev.

Does any of this really sound like de-escalation? It hardly seems like Putin will just bow out and let this happen to 'his' people...

The script is designed to take the US into war with Russia.  The last goddamn thing we need but the war mongers and money changers stay where they are thanks to times like these.  This page in history will reveal those in decision-making seats as scam artists in get-rich-quick scheme called politics or loyal to foreign interests and guilty of a policy coup to enrich themselves and drain their own country of its wealth, in the name of "globalization and sustainability."  What is unsustainable is imbeciles and hysterical but quite rich undercover foreign agents at the helm of the ship and they are aiming right for the iceberg, in fact, accelerating so more damage is done.

These are very dangerous people.

Observe the patterns of Russian involvement, then the etnic cleansing and moving of populations other than Russian.

This Empire of Evil still shows no restraints in terrorizing its own citizens and other countries.

Current Russian Empire is just a continuation of the Soviet Empire which was just a continuation of the "old" Russian Empire. The differences are only propagandistic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Empire

Current Russia is a huge empire keeping in terror and in abject poverty its subjects. Of these, only a minority is of etnic Russians, but they enjoy huge economic and political advantages from Moscow and Sankt-Petersburg. They are the feudal lords of this empire in the same way the Austro-Hungarian feudals were the lords of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

If not for its huge repressive apparatus, the Russian Empire would dissintegrate in a few years because it is an empire built on crimes and bad will.

Do Putin & Merkel have a sense of humour? I kind of doubt it, but it would be hilarious if they celebrated this anniversary with a renewal of this pact.

Saturday August 23, 2014.

75th Anniversary of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Non-Agression pact between Nazi Germany & Soviet Russia.....

Would love to see Putin & Merkel announce something similar in a little over a week.....

I doubt it will happen though given the upcomig NATO Summit. That will really prove once and for all (assuming Putin hasn't gone into Ukraine by early September), whether any of these European Leaders have any spine.

I'm looking at Erdogan, Merkel, Hollande, Orban and whoever represents Bulgaria in particular.

Erdogan has won his Presidential Election now - he's secure for five years and will soon appoint his own man as Turkish PM.

If he has any vision for Turkey he will withdraw Turkey from NATO at or soon after this summit in Wales and declare Turkey's neutrality and then close the Black Sea to any warships from non Black Sea countries. Specifically the US obviously.

Erdogan is the guy Putin needs to change the dynamics here. If he can flip Erdogan, NATO/US might, might, start re-thinking their whole strategy of isolating Russia and back off.

We can only hope.

Mr. Erdogan is the man we should all be looking to.

Contact your local Turkish consulate/ embassy today - and call for Erdogan to provide some much lacking European leadership. The irony of course being - the EU has consistently failed to seriously consider Turkey for entrance into the EU!!!

Does anyone know - how does Jens Stoltenberg compare to Anders 'Fogh of War' Razzie.

Is there any chance Stoltenberg (a former Labour Prime Minister from Norway) could have more backbone than 'Fogh'?

i.e, Actually take the notion of Peace & Security in Europe seriously and not inflame tensions at every step?

Maybe Razzie is trying to stir things up and get a war started before he leaves office (October 1). This might have been the mission he's been given this year - give Russia a bloody nose, anyway you can figure it out.

First week of October is quite interesting.

Wednesday October 1 - Stoltenberg becomes head of NATO.

Sunday October 5 - Bulgarian Election (Who wins here? Pro or Anti South Stream? With what the Ukies have done - or are about to do - block Russian gas - this will surely play into the hands of whatever Bulgarian politicians are advocating ignoring the EU diktats and campgaining for South Stream).

Sunday October 5 - Brazilian Presidential Election. Will Dilma get another term? Its possible that after winning re-election she could come out more forcefully or stridently in support of Putin (which I imagine would be a dangerous political move at the moment?)

In other words - Razzie has about 7 weeks to provoke Russia into making what could be a terrible error (stepping into Ukraine too early). Can the militia hold out that long until October?

More on MH17,

The map is a result of the dutch governmental reply to an independent investigation by rtlnieuws (a dutch commercial news agency).

RTLnieuws bought satelite images of about 137 km2 of the area where MH17 had crashed. They bought images from 16th of july and the 26th july both taken around 09:00 in the morning. These images were analyzed by a company named NEO. This company used software to determine relevant differences between the two images. These differences were judged twice by experts to determine if these were trivial or not (i.e. moved garbage can, livestock, etc). The debris attributed to MH17 is on the map. From the satelite images it cannot be determined what the debris is.

RTL nieuws published the map, and the dutch government reacted by a fact sheet which includes the map mentioned in the post above. The colors mean: GREEN: inspected by investigation teams. RED: Areas forbidden by the rebels to be entered : ORANGE: Uninvestigated area.

The link to the RTLnieuws article is here (dutch):
Groot deel rampgebied niet onderzocht door missie | RTL Nieuws

Here is the actual images used to identify debris:
MH17

The dutch investigation teams mentioned before in an interview that they were using satelite images.

RTLnieuws is trying to get reporters in the unsearched north-west area, but has not yet been successfull. It is unclear who has control of the area of the crash site.

The news agency also interviewed a refugee who claims to have seen the plane intact but burning breaking through the clouds and see it break into two. Couldn't find a link on internet.

Relax. No one here is claiming Russia is all peace and happiness.

You miss the point. Russia is being set-up here for MH17, and indeed the entire Ukraine fiasco. It has all been initiated by the West.

The fact you can't see this indicates your intense bias (not that surprising given you're from Latvia which has suffered considerably at the hands of the Russians down the years).

But you see the problem? By having that mindset, if the shit really does hit the fan, it will be the Poles, Latvians, Lithuanians in particular who will feel the blowback from Russia.

Why? Because you are the most VOCAL about how bad Russia is, and they'll want to shut you all up!

You will be blamed. You set yourself up as a victim by running to mama instead of taking a measured and reasonaed look at all the facts - going all the way back to 12 months ago and the competing offers Yanukovych was forced to choose between (forced by the EU by the way, no doubt at the urging of the US).

The Russian offer was better for Ukraine - so he chose it. (And better for him no doubt, but besides the point).

EU/NATO/US couldn't take this, so they engineered a coup in Kiev.

And from that coup - all these problems happen.

You know what the problem is - if you provoke poke provoke and poke enough, eventually the Russians will throw their hands up and conclude there's no point trying to talk sense or negotiate with this war mongers, they just want a war - so we will give it to them!

And then where do we end up - World War 3 and nuclear winter. We are still some way off that, but it could be just around the corner if hot heads like yours prevail.

Hot head? In which sentense? Please quote.

Its kind of borring stuff to repeat my self again and again just to clear out any steriotypes but I guess I have to do it again with you.

Uprising against corupt Putin puppet in Ukraine was legit and no CIA hand there BUT afterwards fight to put in next prez was between two evils Putin regime and West oligarch regime. No good guys here to see.

BUT the land belongs to ukranians not Putin regime, and if he tries to occupy Ukrain with his terrorists I wont be silent. Because if you dont stop him now he will continue. That of course doesnt mean that west oligarchs has not taken over EU including my country and our independece gets fictional by each day. Yes, that is another enemy we got to fight but today more danger is from Pytin regime.

And Latvians will never give up without a fight again our country. We dont want to live under Russian o cupation ever again.

Do you understand my view?

Among the bills signed by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on July 22 was one which seriously toughens penalties for “infringement of order” in holding or organizing public events.  A person who has incurred administrative penalties more than twice in six months could face imprisonment for up to 5 years if charged with the same ‘offence’.  Otherwise they face large fines.

The maximum term of administrative detention has been increased from 15 to 30.

A new article of the Code of Administrative Offences imposes liability for “repeated failure to obey the legitimate demand of a police  or FSB [Security Service] officer”.  This can result in administrative arrest of up to 30 days.

Other ‘innovations’ include administrative arrest of up to 10 days for infringements of the rules for holding mass events.  Up till now this was punishable only by a fine or compulsory labour.

An article has been introduced imposing liability for hampering the work of infrastructure, with this punishable by administrative arrest of up to 15 days.

The ruling United Russia party deputies who proposed the bill back on March 31 claimed that “citizens’ rights and freedoms need to be protected against actions caused by unauthorized meetings”.
