The Privilege Of Watching War
Submitted by James E. Miller via Mises Canada,
Iraq War the Third is now in its nascent stages. Last week, after a slew of confused press reports, President Obama ordered a number of airstrikes in the Northern territory of Iraq. This was called a “humanitarian intervention” to protect a cultish religious sect known as the Yazidis from warring Islamic jihadists. But as war journalist Eric Margolis points out, the strikes were more likely “aimed at bolstering US-backed Kurds against the advancing Islamic State forces.” And, of course, oil played a role in strikes as well. In times of war, truth in reporting takes a backseat to hidden agendas.
Obama assured us little people that he wouldn’t escalate conflict with boots on the ground, telling reporters, “American combat troops will not be returning to fight in Iraq because there is no American military solution to the crisis in Iraq.” On that remark, let’s hope he’s right. What possible good could come of invading Iraq again? The last tango in the desert failed miserably. Liberal democracy did not bloom on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates. It’s hard to establish Anglo-Saxon norms in an artificial country formed by Europeans technocrats a century ago.
As American-made bombs decimate the Iraqi landscape once again, neoconservatives in Washington D.C. are busy salivating at the prospect of being relevant once again. The usual suspects of chicanery – including but not limited to Elliot Abrams, John Yoo, and Frederick Kagan – are all weighing in on the decision. Suddenly, they have forgotten that, as architects of W. Bush’s Iraq crusade, they played a helping role in destabilizing the region for the fanatics of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to take over.
It’s amazing the level of cognitive dissonance displayed by the media while reporting on this latest dustup. The men and women who agitate for non-stop war will continue to use their voice to push for more action. Rarely is a mic afforded to anyone longing for peace.
How long the latest rash of missile strikes will go on is anyone’s guess, outside the president himself. Obama assures us he “will not allow the United States to be dragged into fighting another war in Iraq,” but let’s not be fooled: airstrikes are an act of war, and U.S. troops never really left Iraq to begin with – they merely switched names. This is a continuation of nation-building and endless war. And we’ll have the pleasure of playing spectators from the comfort of our couch, watching the evening news.
The prospect of renewed war has little effect on the public anymore. We have been desensitized to the violence because it seemingly never stops. Material capitalism has created a state of luxury never known to mankind before our current day; yet it renders our sympathy for the plight of others flaccid. We watch movies and play video games and pretend to know what war is like. But in reality, we can’t begin to understand how it feels to live under the threat of bombs and shrapnel every day.
As Americans, and Westerners, we are gifted with the option to not partake directly in war, but play the casual observer. It’s a privilege; and not at all like the class privilege egalitarians are constantly harping about. To see explosions go off in foreign lands, destroying homes, mutilating children, killing family members, is a jarring sight. But as long as it’s a pixelated image on a computer screen, it fails to have the same heart-wrenching effect as if it were occurring just a few feet away. It fails to invoke the emotional intensity that is the most potent weapon in battle. It fails to show the emotional impetus that is behind vindictive combat.
How lucky we are to be far removed from the cries of a mother whose child was collateral damage in an air strike. How lucky we are to not have our brothers and sisters disintegrated before our eyes. How lucky we are to not have our parents taken from us by stray bullets. How lucky are we not to have a generation of orphans, angry over the death of their mothers and fathers and wishing to exact revenge.
The new Vice News documentary on the growing Islamic State in Syria provides a candid but eerie look into the internal deliberations of West-hating Muslim fanatics. These aren’t ordinary folks happy with careers and raising families. They live for jihad. They feed children propaganda on why American and European infidels must die. What’s discomforting about this mindset is that it’s not completely unjustifiable. At one point during the mini-series, a pious man dedicated to the cause of the Islamic State declares, “we are going to invade you as you invaded us. We will capture your women as you captured our women. We will orphan your children as you orphaned our children.”
Can it really be denied that a century of meddling in the Middle East hasn’t created this sentiment of seething vengefulness? Who are we, as Americans and citizens of militarily-dominant countries, to sit back and ignore this type of anger, when under the same circumstances, we would feel the same way? Such unfettered rage demands reflection: how blessed we are to not live in such a maddening state. And how fortunate we are to have an ocean of distance between us and pit of despair known as the Middle East.
It’s truly unfortunate how the suffering of others helps us to understand the blessings wrought by domestic tranquility. The other day, I shared an elevator with Eli Lake of The Daily Beast. Well-respected as a foreign policy analyst with high-ranking connections, Lake is one of the biggest agitators for war in the media. Seeing him up close was quite a revelation. Clad in nicely-fitted dress clothes, I was struck by Lake’s protruding belly. It was reminiscent of when I ran into Bill Kristol months before in the same elevator. Same clothes, same overweight figure.
These men have the benefit of filling their gullets at rubber chicken dinners while begging for death and destruction across the globe. They don’t don military garb, pick up AR-15s and take care of business themselves. They would rather stare into a television camera and make the case for other people’s children to go off and die in war.
Is this really human progress? Have we reached the pinnacle of human existence where men can live comfortably cheerleading for mass murder? Did anybody think to question this outcome of secular materialism before celebrating its benefits?
For now, the warmongers will get their wish. Obama’s airstrikes aren’t short-term. They will go on until the Iraqi government gets a handle on the jihadists wreaking havoc in the country; the probability of which is quite low. As Daniel Larson writes, “it will be only a matter of time before there are demands for escalation and deeper involvement.” Such is American foreign policy. We pay for it without actually paying the true price of anxiety and bloodshed (families of dead and wounded veterans are an exception). As long as war is kept at arm’s length, it will continue to happen. We will avoid the true price of government slaughter, until the consequences finally reach our shores, just as they did on September 11th, 2001. By then, many will mourn the relative peace we were so lucky to have enjoyed.

The world has been at war since the dawn of man, if anything, we have been at one of the most peaceful points in history lately. Nothing will ever stop war and bring about a universal peace, it just isn't in human DNA.
Oh yeah, and most of it has been about religion...
more about resources, "money" and power
over this and what is represented and
promised. very speculative to initiate
such a mess for your fellows and offspring.
Per a prominent Russian analyst, the USSA will continue to inflict pain on other nations, until pain comes directly to the USSA.
I sincerely hope and pray this never happens. Please no more 9/11's, it would destroy what little freedom we have left.
Ding ding ding! And we got a winner. Dumbest Statement of the Month Award
Don't EVEN try to hide behind some /s tag because I'm sure you were serious.
Really? Show me your evidence that contradicts my statement. I'll be waiting.......... and waiting........... and waiting...........

I sure hope you trade better than you postulate, just sayin'
Several hundred thousand American military had the "privilege" of seeing the Iraq and Afghan wars at VERY close range. Not even mentioned in the article. Perhaps the names of the American dead will be put on a buried wall in DC one day.
Does Tyler have the same sort of contempt for veterans that Choomboy has?
Congratulations, you display all the classic characteristics of 'liberal logic', the greatest oxy-moron (and morons) of modern day Earth. First, the article isn't just about war, it includes the chance your dumb ass will be assaulted/killed walking to your ACORN meeting (it has fallen substantially). The book was also written in.............. 2011, which encompasses a large chunk of Iraq and Afghanistan war. But as with liberalus stupidus, this detail was lost upon you.
I also happen to be extremely pro military, supporting military charities, running in military events and training with an ex-SEAL and two ex-Rangers. It doesn't change the fact, even with Iraq and Afghan wars, that we are living in one of the most peaceful times in world history, per capita. Hell, if you took out the liberal cum-stain cities like Chicago, the rate would be even lower.
You seem like the kind of guy that woukld need to have something like this explained to you slowly, as you would a very dumb child:
I am Chumbvwamba.
As the article pointed out, Americans have the option to watch from the sidelines. That includes those in the military, who volunteer to join, - & many who volunteer to go to war zones.
It's time to stop the juvenile, dumb jock attitude. High school is over and this isn't the Friday night football game. Time to wise up, and stop being cannon fodder.
Misused stupid/ignorant military & police are the greatest potential threat to freedom and life in this country. Banksters in expensive suits don't have the personal muscle to make it happen themselves. The banksters do have the brains to fool who they consider ' dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns in foreign policy'.
(I'm from a military family, and also served.)
NPR and Scientific American aren't very good sources for making your argument.
BTW - I used to love Scientific American when I was a kid. I went to the library and read every copy they had. A few years back I bought a copy to check it out. I couldn't believe how much it had changed. Now it isn't just about science . . . . It's about pushing a PC agenda. Such a shame.
I agree about what 'science' has become. The book just happened to be mentioned in the article.
The point that I was trying to make is that just about all media aimed at the general public, pushes an agenda. It's not just about reporting the news.
You would have to look at the details of their definitions & methodology to determine how valid are their conclusions. But let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say that the study is correct. The last 10 years have been 'less violent'. Does that mean NPR and Scientific American would support a massive reduction in the military and security budget? Does that mean they would support the end of US troops in foreign wars? Does that mean they would support the 2nd Amendment since violent crimes have gone down, with increasing numbers of Americans owning guns & having concealed carry permits ?
Don't hold your breath.
We as a nation I fear must pay for our's and the Oligarch's sins. Unless thing change, that payment will be in the form of financial collapse and nuclear WWIII.
Rome got along fairly well right up to the end. Bread and circuses, entertained by gladiator battles to the death in the arena, etc.
Yes, people who are well fed and secure with sit and watch horrible attrocities as entertainment.
"until pain comes directly to the USSA."
It will. All the dollars Fed is printing to keep this govt going (and keep Wall Street going) are weakening the dollar steadily. At some point USD will lose reserve status then drop rapidly.
But that's how Rome fell. Currency debasement. Ok, coin debasement back then. Rome sank into economic anarchy, then the attacks came and millions were slaughtered.
So yea, it'll go seemingly well for America right up to the end.
Fro the OP: And we’ll have the pleasure of playing spectators from the comfort of our couch, watching the evening news.
From LL above: Per a prominent Russian analyst, the USSA will continue to inflict pain on other nations, until pain comes directly to the USSA.
This article and the above quoted comment highlight a point I have been trying to make: The American public, save for those relatively few unfortunates who have lost a family member to war death of harm (or who may have suffered such themselves), does NOT understand what war is nor have any memory of it. This is the starting point for our willingness to make it upon others.
I can pretty much guarantee you that the Ukrainian people, who have been smashed between Russia and Hungary / Austria / Germany twice in the last 100 years, WANT NO FUCKING PART OF IT. I am willing to bet that they remember even if we do not. The American left and right warmongers want to make money, and they are willing to kill everyone else in order to do so, especially people who stand in their way of making money.
I want you to recall the image we've all seen in a movie somewhere of someone getting their legs smashed between an automobile and a loading dock. THAT is Ukraine. I want you to think of your own parents and grandparents and children when you see refugees on the road, walking away from their homes and towards god knows what. These people who want war in Ukraine are criminally insane.
As someone whose parents came from near that area of the world, yes your last paragraph rings very true. None of those people want even a remote repeat of previous hostilities.
Not sure if you've heard this one, but apparently Sergei Glazyev said recently that the real problem isn't the Nazis in Kiev, it's the Nazis in America that need to be dealt with. Having recently read Nazi International by Joseph Farrell, it rings true. Let's face it, these surviving nazis (the party, not necessarily all soldiers pressed into duty) didn't just start voting Democrat in 1946. A mass of plundered loot was laundered thru western banks. A number of "arrangements" haven't changed in 70 years. A lot of guys (and their successors) cannot be questioned.
Some third party wishes to draw 2 superpowers into a protracted, costly struggle. I can only hope the Russians can see this, since I fear few in the short-memoried West seem to have restraint in mind.
Posted this of 5/9/14. Seemed apropos to this article.
Imagine when you were 9 years old. You have your whole life ahead of you and the only thing you are thinking about is what time school lets out so you can get home to play with your friends.
Finally the bell rings and you race off to enjoy a game of soccer with your pals. In a small field not far from your home, you are running down a missed shot on goal, when suddenly you hear the dreadful whine of an air raid siren. As you look up you see a shining blur in the sky, and seconds later an entire row of houses on your block is obliterated in a flash of light and heat.
An expanding wall of pressure knocks you down, and as you get back up you see your childhood home is engulfed in flames and dust. While trying to make your way towards the house, you remember your mom was preparing dinner in the kitchen as your baby sister was sleeping in the family room.
Sorrow and anger fills your young heart as tears roll down your face and your body trembles uncontrollably. At that tragic moment in your young life you swear vengeance on those responsible.
"They hate us for our freedumbs."
The US is just treating the rest of the world like it treated the American Indian.
They have something and the US is going to take it.
American Exceptionalism is code for Manifest Destiny on steroids.
As a kids coach, I have to say, that strikes deep. To imagine the kids I coach, and a Hellfire missile, in the same thought is enough to put any man over the edge.
Interesting comment. More and more people are making comparisons to the Indigenous people of this land now called America to other OPPRESSED civilizations.
And all this will come home to America if people remain dumbed down and stupid.
As Russell Means said - "Welcome to the reservation."
Indeed. Very primitive.
Yeah, those trrrssss are evil-doers, that's for sure. Good thing the USA exists to spread freedom.
You're describing daily life for tens of millions of people today thanks to the current and past actions of those ensconced in the US Government and their cronies in banking, law and the military industrial complex. The biggest danger these people or their families see themselves having to face are paper cuts and cellphone service disruptions. Whenever I hear Hitlery or Feinstein talk about war I want to stick a gun in their hands and send them out the door.
I was just reading about the psychological effects on children in warzones the workers in Doctors Without Borders must deal with, along with their medical issues. We live untouched inside a horror story of our own making. How much longer can that last, I wonder?

But sadly, you are right.I always expect the worst of humans, I'm rarely disappointed,
but sometimes pleasantly surprised.
Agree with all you said except the religion tid bit. All wars are about control and not religion.
Religion itself can be seen as a useful instrument of control. If you can convince people to fight each other over something invisible, you can convince them to fight each other over pretty much anything.
If you cannot sell god, theres always life insurance to fall back on.
Told to me by a vicar.
Religion was extremely instrumental in unifying different (i.e. enemies) hunter-gatherer tribes into early towns and city-states.
The ingroup-outgroup morality of the tribes was superseded by the ingroup of the community's personal gods and the outgroup became the city upriver with its own personal gods.
So it also goes in the modern world.
"The man who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities"
Wars are about resources but also about evil.
There are psychopaths who enjoy hurting people, killing people, and destruction. They would choose to harm even if no resources were involved.
Most wars are about Resources... the religion thing is a convenient excuse, I'm sure even the crusades had some trade (resources) involved...
They went after ports, on the Silk Road. Successfully capturing a port basically cuts out a middle-man.
The Fourth Crusade they went after Constantinople, the richest city in Christendom at the time, and 'center of the world' at the time.
Nice set up for the next domestic false flag.
"We had it coming!!"
Re: control and not religion
Religion is a form of control. Anything that has lots of prepackaged bullshit aids the smart-n-savvy people in their ability to manipulate (or control) the dumbasses.
Politics is another form of bullshit control. Words have prepackaged bullshit meanings. The words can be spoken and an entire package of bullshit is delivered into the brain of the dumbasses, eg: Look, there's goes one of "those people" with all your tax money.
So simple, a caveman could do it.
The tribe members sitting there watching the slaughter in Gaza from just over the border sure seem to be having a good time. Betcha they wouldn't be enjoying it so much if they were the ones pulling fletchettes out of their houses and relatives.
It's always about power and control over real resources, including the human kind.
Regardless of religion, happy well-fed people tend to be rather "peaceful" as it were.
Regardless of religion, happy well-fed people tend to be rather "peaceful" as it were.
BINGO!!! and that ladies and Gentlemen sums it up to a T! If you ever have any ideas about ending war, start with that single line, if your can achieve that (impossible?) you will eliminate all wars, just make sure the people you choose to govern you know they will face punishment if they are corrupt. that would entail a "french" type example every so often....
Could the happy, well fed people of the US attest to that as the reason their government has intervened in so many other nations affairs militarily?
Or is Empire the stuff of happy, well fed people in a quest for even more?
You are mistaking the "Well fed people" with the .GOV, most people in the U.S. do not want war. however, our miltary dominance over the world has given us "Cheap" energy, which you could argue has made us fat and happy, if that were to change, I am sure that alot of people that become thin and unhappy will look for someone of something to blame, that is why I question the possibility of it changing at all. what happens when the last barrel of oil is used up? I can assure you there will be pain long before that, so what is the solution? smaller communities that deal with just themselves with no dependency on oil? fee free to discuss, I am always looking for solutions, all ideas considered...
yes, we have been at "war" since the dawn of man, but not because of religion. ALL wars are fought over economics (control of resources, which leads to power and control)...makers of war justiy it with religion.
Most of it's about the smart-n-savvy people creating bullshit to get the dumbasses to kill each other in order for the smart-n-savvy people to get more power.
Religion just makes the job of creating the bullshit a bit easier. But, creating bullshit for dumbasses is what the smart-n-savvy people are supposed to do.
I used to wonder if we were all dead and gone to Hell. Starting not to wonder anymore.
"Oh yeah, and most of it has been about religion..."
Nonsense!
Wars are always started for access to land or resources and the power consequent to gaining land and resources.
Religion is a tool to motivate warriors to do something which is profoundly contrary to their individual interest, but often in the interest of the tribe/nation and always in the interest of its leadership.
while the torah, bible and koran have been responsible for the death and maiming of millions and the destruction of societies and culture the underlying reason has always been resources from water to gold and land. the commodity of the day is oil.
I wholeheartedly agree, still you might find this interesting:
http://www.truthcontest.com/entries/the-present-universal-truth/
papa roach, may i suggest to you to remove your tong from obama's ass hole so you can have a better overview of the reality of the situation worldwide ?
Eliminate scarcity, eliminate war.
When you can go grab some plants, dirt, water and wood and print a house, and your meals, that's when war will become mostly a thing of the past. Then the only contention will be for rare elements, and prime land.
These wars are about resources more than religion. By resources, it's mainly oil, although the important things isn't America getting the oil, just making sure it is all sold for the USD and no other currency. Religious wars aren't really religious. Religion is the tool used by a greedy, ambitious man or small group of men to dupe the masses into fighting and dying for their cause under the guise of doing it for 'their god'. In reality, religion is nothing but a tool of control of the masses. If it wasn't for their resources, the US would never have been involved in that region, and we wouldn't give a shit how many of them killed each other. Kind of like how we don't care what tribe kills the other in Africa. Wonder why that is?
"Oh yeah, and most of it has been about religion..."
No. First of all, the nowadays wars kill millions more than ever before in history. The bloodiest century was the twentieth, and the twenty-first does'nt look much more promising. These were no religious wars. They were all about greed, when they were fought for any reason at all. Vietnam, for instance, was waged without any sensible reason, just like Iraq. The American war lobby desperately needs war, and so does the dollar. Your economy rests on perpetual wars. Behind nearly every war, every military coup after WW2, look and you'll find America's hand.
"Nothing will ever stop war and bring about a universal peace, it just isn't in human DNA."
Correction: Peace is not in America's DNA.
Dejau Vu all over again
Guess you are NOT counting the Americans who live in the War Zones of the Inner cities
Yep, many in Chicago have an idea what living in a war zone is like.
www.heyjackass.com < sad that it even exists.....shot in the junk-o-meter is epic though.
Nothing new here...
Us and Them
And after all we're only ordinary men
Me, and you
God only knows it's not what we would choose to do
Forward he cried from the rear
and the front rank died
And the General sat, as the lines on the map
moved from side to side
Black and Blue
And who knows which is which and who is who
Up and Down
And in the end it's only round and round and round
Haven't you heard it's a battle of words
the poster bearer cried
Listen son, said the man with the gun
There's room for you inside
Down and Out
It can't be helped but there's a lot of it about
With, without
And who'll deny that's what the fightings all about
Get out of the way, it's a busy day
And I've got things on my mind
For want of the price of tea and a slice
The old man died
people with integrity speak out against it.
you know, the ones mass culture reviles and
then ignores.
Love it or leave it, ya goddamn hippy!
Oh, come now. Edmund Burke questioned it over a century ago.
Now on with the Slaughterin' Oligarchs Show!
Saying he wouldn't escalate was his mistake in my view. (Operation Linebacker.) just my view and it's all water under the bridge now anyway.
There never was plan for peace from anyone...just a true supertanker full of rhetoric and talking points. "The National Nightmare" grinds on.
Re; "The National Nightmare" grinds on.
It's only a nightmare for people with morality OCD. Most people have enough duplicity to create the required bullshit to justify any activity.
..."play the casual observer"... okay.
But....for how much longer?
power, sex and money (oil) is what it is all about......
Everything else is bullshit./....
No.
Certainly wouldnt be the first time the American Government bombed its own troops to cover its ass.
The smart-n-savvy create highly believable bullshit about war in order to get the dumbasses to send their kids to war.
Survival of the fittest, BITCHEZZZ!!!
...."about law 'n order to get...."
There, I fixed it for ya..
Jewish perspective of watching a war here.
Uri Avnery – Metro Gaza"When the Israeli army entered the Gaza strip and found there an astounding system of underground tunnels, an idea made the rounds: Why not invite Hamas to build the Tel Aviv metro? They have the expertise, the technology, the planners, the manpower.
But this war is no joke. It is a terrible tragedy. AFTER 29 DAYS of fighting (until now), who has won? It is, of course, much too early to draw final conclusions. The ceasefire has blown up. It will take months and years to sum up all the consequences. But Israeli popular wisdom has already drawn its own conclusions: it is a draw."
Why is that a Jewish perspective. Humans creating optimistic bullshit is what makes humans human.
I am not siding with anyone. The differences are irreconcilable. Netanyahu (sp) figures "It's now or never" and will proceed to unseat them in a manner that can only be effective if/when complete submission is achieved. It is a dead end situation and can no longer end in a draw without extreme pressure or perhaps threats from the outside. That isn't going to happen, so.........
A draw? Noam Chomsky characterizes the regular military attacks on Gaza that're destroying buildings and killing civilians with the excuse that it is targeting Hamas as “mowing the grass.”
By this he means the security of Israel is not the objective but rather the regular maintenance required for keeping an occupied population from making any gains, just barely surviving. Chomsky even explains that the Israelis have calculated the minimum calories a day required for individuals in Gaza to survive, as mass starvation would be a world public relations no-no.
Within the Likud Party, says Chomsky, there are factions arguing for complete destruction of Gaza since this “mowing the lawn” is actually providing electricity, water and minimum food and medicine to the “enemy”; why not just level the place and be done with it.
Roughly the same arguments "we" made about the American Indians, way back when.
Yours is an unjust comparison, as is Chomsky's when he addresses the American Indian situation, used by revisionist usurpers and one-world socialists to displace white Americans from individual ownership of their own land. The comments Chomsky makes about Israel and Gaza, unlike his American Indian statements, can be checked by present day eye-witnesses.
Much of the land America's early settlers acquired was bought legally from the Indians. And it must be remembered that the Indian, free-roving as he was, could not compete with the farmer in his hunting and food-gathering existence, “for the Indians needed thousands of acres for even a small group to exist.”
And both the Spaniards and the Europeans settlers feared the Indians such as the Komantsi, those fierce men who loved to fight and took no prisoners, neither white nor red, except women, and wanted none.
America’s primary story is the victory of expanding civilization over the wilderness, overcoming and conquering an untamed land.
The West’s history has been revised to misrepresent its white culture; it is not a one-sided venture as depicted by the revisionists--primarily open-border Jewish liberals who wrote the 1965 Immigration Act; it fails to report on how the numerous Indian tribal nations that dwelt on the continent fought and annihilated other Indian tribes. War was the way of life for many Indian tribes. In short, the American Indians did not live as one peaceful tribe in harmony with each other and Mother Earth.
And remember that "in almost every war the white man fought against Indians, he was aided by other Indians who joined to fight against traditional enemies,” i.e., enemy Indian tribes.
And if you want to know what cruelty is, take a look at Indian torture: like inflicting thousands of tiny cuts in a man’s body and waiting patiently over days while he is tied to a pole, watching him die, or spread eagling and tying a man upside down to a wagon wheel in the hot desert sun and letting the ants eat him alive…
I've got nothing for or against the Indians, Jews, whites, or anybody. It's one group of assholes against another, and the winning group's DNA survives.
Just how life works: survival-of-the-fittest.
JR, think you'll like this post and overall blog idea.

"The political, economic, socio-cultural reasons for this and any other war are always secondary; the main cause is the spiritual dimension. What is the central, deep, spiritual cause of this war?"
The words of the Apostle Paul to the Ephesians: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
"This conversation occurred in the last days of May, long before the withdrawal of militia forces from Slavyansk. Fr. Victor requested that we not publish this interview “until a large plane crashes, after which everything will change, and the war will become unlike any previous one.” The plane crashed, and everything is rapidly changing…"
I do, TP. Are we witnessing in our lifetime, perhaps, history’s final battle – "the battle lines between God and evil where the beast (the antichrist) and the false prophet have gathered the governments and the armies of the earth under the antichrist’s rule – where God has summoned them to battle in order to defeat them”? Revelation (paraphrased) 19:19-21
Journalist Gennady Dubovoy on the front lines of the war in Ukraine: “What is the deeper, spiritual and eschatological meaning of namely this war?”
Fr. Vikor: The establishment of planetary Satanic rule. What’s occurring here is the very beginning of a global war. Not for resources or territory, that’s secondary. This is a war for the destruction of true Christianity, Orthodoxy… And the one thing that genuinely blocks their satanic plans is the Orthodox Church, and the protector of the Orthodox faith is Russia. Our enemies strive to crush them by fracturing the greater Russian world to which Ukraine belongs…”
There are many weapons to chose from, but only two sides.

Same as it ever was, here in 'Murika.
911 was an inside job and not some so called terrorists with box cutters who couldn't fly a single engine plane.
Masterminds were BUSH, CIA, MOSSAD, GCHQ. Evidence is there, just people need to open their eyes and maybe listen to some experts. ie. AE1000 on the impossibility of the towers falling at free fall from jet engine fuel etc.
vice magazine is propoganda. you lost me when you described it as 'candid'.
it is nonsense meant to run cover for intelligence operations and to a lesser extent, state department policy.
Down voted cuz I used the word "Jewish?"
Or because a former IDF speaks out against the Gaza war?
Here is what the former Israeli soldier also says: "Hamas has not only shown a lot of courage during the fighting, but also surprising ingenuity in preparing for this campaign. It is still standing upright. The Israeli army, on the other hand,-"
Uri Avnery – Metro GazaBecause for the hasbara patrol - Israel can do no wrong...ever. It is a matter of faith, and of rejecting, prior to consideration, any evidence suggesting wrongdoing.
In fairness, the hasbara patrol has a mirror image in the Jew Hate Brigades.
Fuckin' tedious. I could give a shit about Israel or Palestine - don't hate 'em, just kind regard each like I regard, say, Moldova... just don't care.
I'm not concerned. I have a big shindig tonight and I have shrimp to shell.
I sure hope you detoxify after eating those toxic laced shrimp. Zeroforce (no connection to this web site) is amazing. Take one, and wake up feeling like I slept for 10 hours. I recommend them to all.
No American military solution to the crisis in Iraq
What a dumbass
Guess he doesn't know that Rambo won the war in Vietnam.
All it takes is balls. Maybe Putin can lend him his.
Re: All it takes is balls.
Balls and dead peasants.
Rambo won the war in Vietnam . . . and Afghanistan (when the locals were freedom fighters)
Tear Jerk me out M'Fer finally reach our shores, just as they did on September 11th, 2001.
They were and still are on our shores asshole. They are in Washington D.C.
American football season is about to start, war ratings will go way down.
"finally reach our shores, just as they did on September 11th, 2001."
Shit keeps flowing and flowing. The "Double Thinking" or the "Ministry of Truth"?
Nothing reached "our shores".
Everything was already there.
This op-ed is just one more reasonable observation of how an overly self-indulgent and criminal society that was born to be the opposite both "is" and "has been" destroying itself from within for decades.
When the words in the Bill of Rights are questioned in Time magazine as obsolete to our governance -you know your time is finished.
Would love to see the American people in an all-out noble civil war to finish the ugly chapter, but we know that like Israel the U.S. and it's people are "exceptional" as we've been told so many times before. We will complete the folly when our Leaders take us to war again because we will be told again that they hate us for our freedoms.
And once again we will buy it from the politician we know is lying to us -anyway!

"Material capitalism has created a state of luxury never known to mankind before our current day; yet it renders our sympathy for the plight of others flaccid."
I resent the implication that Capitalism is at all any cause or partial cause of perpetual war!
A true Capitalist society, included truly limited governments, does not start wars becuase they are the antithesis of wealth creation. No rational business person wants war. No rational worker wants war. In a capitalist society the insanity of Iraq could not have happened......any attempt by a Bush or an Obama to go to war and build a coalition would be met by masses of revolting citizens, becuase they would have understood that their individual self interests were not served by such insanity.
The caveat here is that what we have is not Capitalism!
If you want an end to perpetual war and the behind-the-scenes machinations that cause them, you should act to promote a truly Capitalist society and a pro-capitalist limited government.
War is a terrible, terrible thing. When a free society has to defend itself, it will do so, rightly and justifiably.
What has been going on in the middle east is anti-capitalist. It is, forgive the over-used expression, "bankster" funded and propogated at the behest of TTK (them that know).
Seek freedom of the individual, LIBERTY, in this country and the start of nation-building, dictator-removing, raging wars the planet over will cease.
I always maintain that the best thing we can do is stay home, trade freely with those who would do the same, arm ourselves to the f'ing teeth, and let it be known that if you fuck with us, we the free, we will obliterate you from the face of the planet.
Seems really damned simple to me. PREACH CAPITALISM.
krugman would disagree with you.
Well, he is a member of the tribe.
one of the most enlightening perspectives i have ever heard in my lifetime came from an 8 year old lebanese boy at a july fourth fireworks show. i was dating his mother at the time and she jumped every time a rocket exploded. i realized what a mistake it was to bring her to the bomb fest. all the booming reminded her of all she had seen and experienced during israel's invasion of her country. her son, on the other hand, kept exclaiming how the fireworks were the most beautiful bombs he had ever seen. war mongers are evil people. they should die.(yes, the irony)
Started watching a WWI documentary series and it is amazing the new ways they thought of to kill other soldiers. And there were plenty of soldiers to kill as even countries like Turkey had an army of over a million soldiers. While we now mourn the loss of life in today's conflicts, it was not uncommon to see 20,000 men die in a single morning assault - only to see the leaders order the men 'over the top' again and again.
As long as there are at least 2 people alive on Earth, there will always be a need for people to have the means to destroy one another. That is nature of the human experience. If you do not like war or violence you are advised to leave the planet; provided you have the means to do so.
human nature?
as cogd' opined in a recent article at ZH
The behavior of caged animals reflects their imprisonment.
Who knows what "human nature" would be if our society were
arranged to be less like a prison, and with fewer incentives for mayhem?
I'm sure we would all be loving and wonderful if we were in control of our own destinies, but we are living in cages built by others obsessed with imposing dominion. This does not leave much much goodwill for the rest of us to revel in: All people know now is envy of those who have what they covet.
When you sup with the devil you need a long fork.
Bullshit. Americans haven't experienced it, they haven't even seen it. Americans have never been shown the violence - they live in a fantasy world of propaganda that is designed to protect them as much as control them. If they saw what their government does in their name they would be so disgusted the country would drown in a pool of vomit.
The experts call the re-introduction of US air attacks in Iraq a Catch-22 where we can only lose if we do or lose if we don’t.
So, who would win? Answer: Israel.
Justin Raimondo (“Iraq: Why Bomb Now? Two reasons: The Kurds – and the Israelis”– Aug 11) cuts to the chase:
In gaining their one and only ally in the region, and – by the way – securing a reliable energy source on good terms – Israel is claiming the spoils of war. It is also realizing, in the breakup of Iraq, one of its longstanding goals: the humbling of an historical enemy and the extension of Israeli power into the very heart of the Middle East. "From the Nile to the Euphrates" is the phrase that defines the geographical bounds of the "promised land," according to their interpretation of the Bible, and it is a concept central to the Zionist dream…
Three separate and distinct nations are emerging from the rubble: a southern Shi’ite state, a northern Sunni entity, and Kurdistan. This was the unacknowledged goal of those who agitated for the US invasion to begin with: to atomize Iraq, and, in short, create chaos. Looking at Iraq today, one recalls George W. Bush declaring "Mission accomplished!" – and suddenly the real nature of that mission is all too apparent.
Yet the actual goal, and the public version of our war aims – an Iraq "whole and free" – were contradictory: in public the Bush administration was committed to the unity of Iraq, and demands by the Kurds for an independent state were brushed aside. In spite of this, however, the actual policy had been to encourage the Kurds at every turn.
Since 1991 a no-fly zone had been maintained over Kurdistan and the Kurds enjoyed de facto independence, a condition they took full advantage of. Under the American occupation authority, they had still been denied Kirkuk, but for all intents and purposes Kurdistan has functioned as an independent state.
One measure of their de facto independence has been their growing ties to Israel: the vaunted pershmerga, as their fighting force is called, have been trained by the Israelis, and no doubt arms have been flowing into the Kurdish arsenal via Tel Aviv. After the Kurdish seizure of Kirkuk the first oil shipment from the KRG to a foreign market made a beeline to Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently declared that Kurdish independence is "inevitable." …

Regionally benefitting the Israeli Zionists, Saudi Despots, and other corrupt Sheikhdoms is
congruent, though secondary to the overall
US/NATO global plan of containing/suppressing Russia, China
and all other "potential threats" to the Pentagon-TBTF goals
of full-spectrum military and financial global dominance.
Reconsider the PNAC-Brzezinski plans. Yes, the Mideast is to be dominated for its petrodollar resources, but as a path to global domination. Europe and Ukraine are to be dominated for both resources and geo-political advantage. The "Asian Pivot" and the re-militarization of subordinate Japan is intended to thwart China. Africom, and the hundreds of military bases throughout the world are pieces of seeking a global, not regional empire.
Focusing simplistically on Israel misses the forest for a tree.
Having been to war and to war in Iraq...I've since become a rather radical pacifist with certain qualifiers i.e. not a pacifist if we're invaded or if our domestic enemies threaten way of life and/or constitution. That said, don't have any illusions about what war really is, and regardless of the human costs for our side, this nasty business has exacted a staggering human cost on the other. Frankly, I think this post doesn't emphasize the dynamic of systemic vengeance currently brewing in the Middle East enough. Not to downplay, but, constantly blaming Islam or religion is misleading. Yes, it acts to affirm and unify these people, but make NO fucking mistake about it, these people are pissed and want our blood because we fucking slaughtered them wholesale. I know, I was a part of it and saw it. THAT is the motivator here and even if this were a secular society they’d still want revenge. Not to mention the bigger issue, which is that IF the Middle East was carved-out according to its tribal/ethnic and religious lines THEN we'd have a very different situation and world. Moreover, lest we forget that our true interest in the M/E is to maintain the petrodollar, which in turn exploits the host’s nations, perpetuates oppressive regimes and funds the infidel lifestyle of eating ourselves to death. I'm NOT taking sides, all I'm saying is that the u.s. is in decline and those people, regardless of your feelings for them, have every reason in the world to get back at us and we'd feel the same way if roles were reversed. Three fucking wars with Iraq? For Fuck sake, already, this place looks and smells like a zoo with wrapped women and goat fuckers, and a relatively decent yet not compelling oil reserve. Was it worth it, NO!
Re: Was it worth it, NO!
Interesting comment, but it's not like people decide about war. The smart-n-savvy people create the proper bullshit to enrage the males. The males do what males have always done, kill. The next generation will go to war for the exact same prepackaged-bullshit reasons. And it's not their fault. The prepackaged-bullshit WORKS !
Que: slow-motion eagles soaring before a slow motion flag. Patriot looking skyward at B2 bomber passing slow-motion eagle, with slow motion tear.
So simple, even a sociopathic caveman could do it.
By the looks of most of America's totally unwrapped obese women, Middle Eastern wrapped women look measurably better.
I review video of the Syrian war to gain insight into the tactics of modren urban warfare. There is an added benifit of seeing people who have sworn to kill me and my family kill each other.
The best videos of typical Syrian combat are a series of thirteen posted on liveleak. Search for "The Most Intense Videos From Syria" and enjoy.
James Miller and I might agree that intervention in soveriengn counties is not something the US should be doing. Looks like we would also agree that Hillary Rodham Clinton's illegal war against the sovereign nation of Libya was a treasonous war crime and that her arming of the sworn enemies of the Untied States there (Al Qaeda) was more treason and that she intentionaly let the American ambassador die to cover up her failed policies there, murder in very cold blood. Obama is worse, he could not wait to give himself the power to execute Americans without judicial review. His illegal intervention in Ukraine is also a war crime.
But I do find a couple things wrong with Mr. Millers attempt at progressive propaganda. First of all, it is the neo-stalinists (progressives) who are licking their chops for war and blood as history shows they always have. Neo-conservatives are not really conservatives, but are bent left and who march along with the tyrannical and bloody progressives. Here in the states, progressives literally froth at the mouth to be able to kill babies and their leaders like Bill Ayers openly call for the murder of 25 million Americans so the progressives can have their criminal mafia state or whatever it is they want. Killing is what neo-stalinist progressives do.
Second, ISIL does not feed children propaganda, it feeds them the Quran which has yet to be topped as a book of hatred and was not written yesterday. Islam started by slaughtering the three jewish tribes living peacefully in Mecca and Medina somewhere about 630AD and went on from there, checked only by the ability to fight back. Their way has always been conquest and slaughter.
Of course it does not help to piss them off....
I find it disgusting to attempt to pin warmongering on America, (hijacked by criminal progressives) conservatives, (who are non-interventionist if they really are conservative) and I also find it disgusting to try to cover for murdering islam.
Hope you like the videos.

Until you "neo" guys figure out some simple words for your political labels, "da people" are gonna be lost in the wood looking for a rabbit to lead them out of the hat in forest.
Succinct.
bullshit! at least you are a little more sophisticatd than the average hasbara asshole. muslims believe in abraham and jesus, calling their respective followers people of the book. THEY DID NOT ATTACK JEWISH TRIBES!!!! they attacked animist polytheistic pagans who attacked them for their monotheistic beliefs. another point, islam is known as the religion of the sword because of the rise of the ottoman empire. just like christians have rationalized the utility of war(it is all over the torah as a good thing) the ottoman empire justified its conquests by subverting the original teachings of mohammed by editing the hadith to their liking. the fundamentalists of today( all the religions do the same damn thing) use convenient translations of these teachings to justify their violence.

By all mean sign up, Mr. Miller. Every warring faction in the Mideast is looking for volunteers, I'd recommend the Peshmerga. Nigeria wants volunteer Ebola nurses. You might try the Marine Corps, or is it Corpse, the president confused me.
go for the oil patch....good money, weekends free in Istanbul, and life is grand. while you're at it you can tell the IRS to fuck off for the first $100K.

the trick is to have the house and the car back home paid for and stash cash.
How the hell does this author link materialism to man’s propensity toward war?
How could you not? War is fun because you acquire the other guy's stuff. What's more materialistic than that?
If you have a moment, materialism is in all the dictionaries: “a tendency to consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than spiritual values.”
If you’re not religious and murder is OK with you, then you can support attacking other countries and killing people to grab their land and resources which make you rich. Translation: the Goldman Sachs golden rule, "doing God’s work."
And, btw, this philosophy is what makes war, both physical and political. Secular materialism!
Apart from the obvious, that one who has never been in a war zone or fire fight can NOT fully imagine what that is really like, the rest of this article is the kind of shallow stupidity that I have come to associate with articles from Mises Canada.
The last, double emphasized, line was the stupidest of all! Anyone who bothers to look into the events of 9/11/2001 will discover that there is no reasonable doubt that those were inside job, false flag attacks. Furthermore, in my opinion, looking deeper makes is appear very probable that 9/11 was done by Zionists to blame on Muslims, in order to start genocidal wars, as well as prepare to impose democidal martial law in Western countries, all of which were designed to happen the way that they did, despite that those designs would then automatically spiral on and on, to get worse and worse ...
For ordinary people, in the context, say, of a country like Canada, there is NOTHING practically possible that they could do, and more and more of them have given up attempting to do anything. "They are gifted with the option to not partake directly in war, but play the casual observer." Meanwhile, the ONLY thing that they might be able to do would be to try to influence the Canadian government. Hah! All of the bigger political parties that have any current representation in the Canadian parliament adamantly support the official story about 9/11 events, and none of them will tolerate anyone within their parties questioning that official story. The basic problem is that because human civilizations were controlled by the people who were the best at being dishonest and backing that up with violence, "the warmongers will get their wish."
Therefore, the single biggest, most spectacular LIES behind these runaway wars based on deceits have no politically effective ways to be challenged. The warmongers have already gotten what they wanted, and they have the political systems within the USA and other Western countries already totally sewed up, with their degree of control over the combined money/murder systems. Of course, that is also reflected in their degree of control over the mass media, where there is constantly propaganda promoted to continue to advance the agenda of the deceits backed by destruction, or enforced frauds, systems.
Personally, after spending several decades working on these political issues in the Canadian context, my conclusions are that it is practically hopeless. Furthermore, the runaway social polarization driven by the warmongers continually getting what they wanted is surpassed by the ways that their agenda also drives runaway destruction of the natural world. At the present time, Canadians, amongst all the other NATO countries, continues to be one of the most privileged, in the sense that Canadians are still more inside of their economic bubbles, which have not yet popped, than most other NATO countries. Paradoxically, that means that Canadians are even more comfortably able to deliberately ignore the runaway systems of debt slavery backed by wars based on deceits.
THE WORST PROBLEM IS THAT OUR WORST ENEMIES ARE THE RULING CLASSES THAT DOMINATE OUR SOCIETY. FURTHERMORE, THE MORE THAT ONE LEARNS ABOUT THOSE PROBLEMS, THE WORSE THEY GET, SO THAT THERE IS REALLY NOTHING WHATSOEVER WHICH IS POLITICAL POSSIBLE TO PREVENT THAT FROM AUTOMATICALLY GETTING WORSE, FASTER!
That is especially the case because the vast majority of the people that are ruled over in Western Countries are incompetent political idiots that have been brainwashed to believe in bullshit. The REAL funding of the political processes in Canada has followed the pattern that 99% of the people paid for none of the political parties, while 1% of the population paid for all the activities of all the political parties.
Sure, the insane wars abroad will eventually come back home in more obvious ways. However, the FACTS are that Western Countries have already been conquered by their own ruling classes. The warmongers already control Western countries. The vast majority of people have gradually adapted to that situation, for generation after generation, to act like Zombie Sheeple. Furthermore, that is vicious downward spiral of Catch 22 situations. There is NOBODY worth voting for, because all the significant opposition is already controlled by the dominant warmongers. Therefore, the runaway social insanities of wars based on deceits can only be expected to accelerate, while, at the same time, in the background the accumulating destruction of the natural world is even worse, and will become even more important!
There may be a tiny, tiny group of readers of Zero Hedge that will commiserate with what I have written. However, there is no practical point to bothering to write this, since, in the real world of politics in the Western world, the warmongers operating the established combined money/murder systems are already more than 99% in control of civilization. Their established systems of debt slavery backed by wars based on deceits are already practically unstoppable (other than by their own madness eventually destroying themselves.) That debt slavery system has already generated numbers which have become debt insanities, and those are surely going to provoke more death insanities in the future.
In fact, given the real social situation that we are surrounded by, there is actually nothing else to which can be done "but play the casual observer." The established political systems are already rigged to be systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, which are titled at least about 99% to be a vertical cliff, whereby the well-dressed, fat warmongers can continue to easily drop rocks on those at the bottom of that political cliff, while those at the bottom can do nothing realistic to hit back at all. Meanwhile, the more serious environmental problems have been deliberately ignored, and allowed to get worse, faster, because the social situations created by the warmongers being in control of civilization make it impossible to change anything. FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES, THERE IS NOTHING THAT AN INFORMED INDIVIDUAL CAN DO BUT ATTEMPT TO ENJOY WHATEVER IS LEFT OF THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL LIFE.
A better informed individual inevitably becomes sufficiently informed about the degree to which the criminally insane warmongers, that are controlling Western civilization, and have already got that situation at least 99% cemented. A better informed individual more and more realizes that the vast majority of people are political idiots, who were so totally brainwashed to believe in bullshit that there are no practically ways to change the political situation. More informed individuals can NOT compete with the mass media, nor any of the other integrated ways that the established money and murder systems are able to continue their vicious feedback spirals of dominating the funding of the political processes, such that there is nothing left in the public spaces but controlled opposition political parties, that operate out of the same basic frames of reference.
A case in point is this stupid article above, which presents the narrative about 9/11 in a way that accepts the huge lies found in the official story, as if those were correct. I regard James E. Miller as another classic example of the kinds of controlled opposition about which one can generally say, "with friends like that, who needs enemies." IT IS BECAUSE THE WARMONGERS, WHO SPECIALIZE IN BACKING UP DECEITS WITH DESTRUCTION, CONTROL WESTERN COUNTRIES THAT WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE BEHAVING IN MORE AND MORE CRIMINALLY INSANE WAYS ...
On the other hand, Radical, James makes a good point: Americans don’t know anything about war; they don’t understand the destruction and the death and the despair; only if they’ve had a family member in the war.
As regards most people in America, Miller’s right. We’re so far away from the warmongers’ wars, they can propagandize them. It’s pretty hard to propagandize the Eastern Ukrainians. They can see and feel what’s happening.
Your commentary on 9/11 is dead on. But to give Miller some slack, he was alluding to the fact that many New Yorkers (and Americans) saw war first hand for the first time in their lives - regardless of who was responsible (Miller perhaps agrees with us that the US explanation for the attacks is incorrect; that in reality it is “very probable that 9/11 was done by Zionists to blame on Muslims”).
Regardless, Radical, excellent article. As usual! Please keep them coming; you are reaching an influential audience here on ZH, connected not only to financial centers but to political outlets, giving your articles tremendous impact worldwide. The latch key to this global tyranny is the Fed and never before has there been so much information linking the owners of the Fed to political corruption worldwide and, now, its governing model, socialism, is failing throughout the West. We are drowning in debt and our rulers have no other cards to play than to add debt. You've been a major part of this exposure.
As G. Edward Griffin wrote in "The Creature..":
"The Creature has grown large and powerful since its conception on Jekyll Island. it now roams across every continent and compels the masses to serve it, feed it, obey it, worship it. If it is not slain, it will become our eternal lord and master.
"Can it be slain? Yes it can.
"How will it be slain? By piercing it with a million lances of truth.
"Who will slay it? A million crusaders with determination and courage." (1994)
I agree with your qualifications to my over-simplified statements, JR.
here's a series of questions
1. Is the Islam religion 'stronger' than Christianity?
2. Are their beliefs stronger?
3. Are they stronger for not tolerating homosexuals, making women know their place, and praying at least one time a day (if not 5x a day)
4. Does this mean the new IS Caliphate is 'stronger' than the United States?
1) Yes, 2) Yes, 3) Yes, 4) Depends on whather if you have an imaginary-friend of your own, or not.
Among intelligent people who really are trying to find out truth, Christianity is stronger because Islam requires some blind adherence to some questionable history.
Oliver Wendel Holmes might have suggested that what is wrong with the morass America finds herself in is with the lies and the rising police power being used against the will of a free people. Perhaps he would have called it sin as relates to his famous quote: “Sin has many tools, but a lie is the handle that fits them all.”
Our watch dog media would quickly label “sin” a religious relic, a term to be used only inside the walls of a church. But for people of faith, sin is an important part of their understanding of a creation that God put together based on natural law, and that forces contrary to these natural laws end up with undesirable consequences.
Wise men have maintained that deviating from this pattern of “God’s laws” means man’s laws are subject to the constant changes of bias, tyranny and, with our current example, lies. In short, a Godless government has no anchor when society’s leaders become corrupt, when the strongest forces in society meld the laws to fit their needs and ignore the previously agreed upon law (the Constitution).
Tyrants and oppressors, of course, move first to separate man from his Creator. For ignorance is man's bondage.
Americans long have been separated from their Christian roots of limited government and liberty which were grafted during the 20th century onto a secular Jewish culture, into the neo-con ideal of a “Universal Nation.” It is the charges of anti-Semitism against defense of America's Christian roots that has enabled these principles to atrophy and even be banned from schools, media, and government – not only in domestic policy but in foreign policy as well.
America’s foreign policy now moves in sync with Israel’s foreign policy which has led to wars and propaganda targeting the Jewish key enemy: Islam. Now, with the Federal Reserve Act drafted by Kuhn, Loeb Banker Paul Warburg providing almost unlimited transfer of America’s resources to the sole use of a central bank with all key owners Jewish, the believers in those Christian founding principles fear for the future of the nation.
America, no longer a sentinel of freedom and human rights, has become a symbol of 21st century slavery and bondage not only to her own people but to all peoples of the world, her American “exceptionalism” no longer exemplifying the Biblical image of a shining “city on a hill” employed by John Winthrop in “A Model of Christian Charity,” the lay sermon he composed in 1630 on his way to New England, but a lawless one of terror.
Ye shall know them by their fruits. -- Matthew 7:16
As for the survival of Christianity, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, had the answer when he addressed the Sanhedrin when it wanted to put Peter and the apostles to death for preaching the Gospel:
“Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.” – Acts 5:34
Ben Franklin wrote: "I've lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing Proofs I see of this Truth — That God governs in the Affairs of Men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that except the Lord build the House they labor in vain who build it. I firmly believe this, — and I also believe that without his concurring Aid, we shall succeed in this political Building no better than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our little partial local interests; our Projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a Reproach and Bye word down to future Ages." – (“God Governs in the Affairs of Men”)
Everyone who advocates war should be required to be on the front line, with no exceptions (president, administration and congress included).
The catalyst for war has not been diminished as many people have hoped it would once the world matured. National pride, political agendas, religious and ethnic hatreds are some of the biggest roadblocks to world peace.
Often we seem to forget as we look back to World War II and at dozens of "lesser Conflicts" peace has been the exception rather then the rule for hundreds and thousands of years. The true reality is that across the world few mothers want to see their children killed and most farmers want to be left along to raise their crops and earn a living. More on the subject of war as a solution to conflict in the article below.
http://brucewilds.blogspot.com/2014/05/war-and-what-is-it-good-for.html
What is happening in Ukraine and the unrest in many areas in the world brings into focus the many conflicts that develop when a region decides to change governments often outside the recognized democratic system of voting. In some cases even after an overwhelming vote such as in Crimea the whole process is called into question.
Unfortunately the American civil war did not resolve the issue of succession forever and definitely was not a template for a solution that should be used in countries across the planet. Bottom-line many in politics are slow to give up control and this will not change. More on this subject in the article below
