US Sending 600 Troops, APCs And Tanks To Countries Bordering Russia To "Reassure Threatened Allies"

Tyler Durden's picture

Escalation over the Ukraine conflict, a/k/a Cold War 2.0, just took another major step forward. Because here comes the cavalry... literally.

While the world is focused on the first deployment of US marines in Iraq in nearly a decade, as "humanitarian advisors" of course so as not to destroy the Nobel peace prize-winning aura of the US president who is rapidly becoming a warmonger on par with his predecessor, a far more dangerous development took place overnight with nobody noticing, when the Pentagon announced that approximately 600 soldiers from the Army’s 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division will deploy to Poland and the Baltic states to help reassure European allies who feel threatened by Russian military moves. And while most Americans may be geographically challenged, Russians know very well that all of these countries border on Russia. As such this very demonstrative military expansion by NATO powers to "pre-contain" Russian military agression will only lead to one thing: even more "defensive" escalation.

Some more detail on the latest US dispatch of troops in the area now defined by the second coming of the Cold War from Stripes.com:

The troops and their equipment — which include M-1 Abrams tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and armored personnel carriers — will go to Europe in October for a three-month series of training exercises.

The troops will originate out of Fort Hood, Texas (keep this in mind for a post later today) and will replace 600 paratroopers from the Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade. "These land training exercises … help foster interoperability through small unit and leader training," Pentagon spokesman Col. Steve Warren said.

In addition to ground forces, the U.S. has also sent F-16 combat aircraft to Poland and participated in NATO air policing missions over the Baltics.

So why is the US sending military reinforcements at a time when every troop movement is scrutinized with a microscope around the globe:

The exercises came at the request of host nations that fear a resurgent Russia, which annexed the Crimea region of Ukraine earlier this year and continues to support a pro-Russia separatist movement in eastern Ukraine.

So to summarize: the countries that are most worried about Russian military aggression, those which by definition border on Russia, have decided to preempt Russia and demand additional US military presence on their territory, believing that the Kremlin will not see this US military build up as one which threatens Russia with even further NATO expansion on its borders. .

Brilliant. Why? Because recall what happened in December 2013 long before the Ukraine semi-hot proxy civil war was raging:

It seems [Putin] had a Plan B in case things escalated out of control, one that fits with what we wrote a few days ago when we reported that "Russia casually announces it will use nukes if attacked." Namely, as Bloomberg reports citing Bild, Russia quietly stationed a double-digit number of SS-26 Stone, aka Iskander, tactical, nuclear-capable short-range missiles near the Polish border in a dramatic escalation to merely verbal threats issued as recently as a year ago.

This comes from an article titled "Russia Stations Tactical, Nuclear-Capable Missiles Along Polish Border", in which we explained how Russia has done precisely this when it stationed a "double-digit" of SS-26 nuclear missiles in Kaliningrad on the border with Poland, over "concerns" what NATO encorachment close to its territory could imply.

And now, NATO appears to have decided to find out just what Russia's response to such an incremental tactical arms build up will be.

One thing is certain: the US response to a fresh contingent of this...

... with a range of this:

Will hardly be wrapped in the tidy, media-friendly package of on ICBM build-up for "humanitarian advisory" purposes...

I have to wonder just how much of that 'worry' these countries have was started by a call from Washington.

This country's last true statesman was Dr. Ron Paul. When I think of how the GOP treated him in the last election I continue to vow never to vote for anyone wearing a red team/blue team label. He is the president we needed at a time like this, even IF he would likely be assassinated, it would mean the people finally understood truth.

But such is not the case. And my country is involved in all types of unspeakable acts to its own populace and also the world's citizens. This nation of derelict, blind, slothful lemmings will get everything it deserves. Sadly that will mean the children who don't know any better.

Theorists in the Rand corporation and the Pentagon have seriously considered,

and some have recommended, launching a pre-emptive nuclear attack on Russia

as a realistic and acceptable policy aim.

Once one cuts through the verbal obsfucation,

the current goals of "full-spectrum dominance" and the "missile shield" bordering Russia

unmistakably aim to provide the Pentagon with a first strike capability immune to retaliation.

Of course, they would never do that "unilaterally" either to defend US "core interests"

or because of an entangling alliance with any of the far-flung US "partners"

We have been assured (that the US has "exceptional" latitude).

The Joint Chiefs can be fired and replaced with incompetent yes-men and psychopaths who will do whatever the Mulatto Farquaad expects them to do. It is partly a sense of professional pride, and partly a sense of responsibility to the larger whole, that keeps the Joint Chiefs from either jumping ship or entering into open rebellion, but eventually the good ones will be ran off. In the end the wheat has to separate from the chaff.

600 U.S. troops?

NOT enough to fight a war. NOt enough to fight a small skirmish! But enough to cause an "international incident", which by the clever use of propaganda from the U.S. government and delivered by the western media, may be enough to convince the American people that a real WAR is justified.

My advice: Get together some Scotch whiskey, beer, chips, hot dog and hamburgers - because when the thermonuclear weapons start falling, it is going to be ONE HELL OF A SHOW !!!!  Forget the barbecue grill, however - you won't need it.    ;-)    ;-)    ;-)

There had been enormous bad blood between Poland and the Ukraine since Ukranian partisans took advantage of the German invasion to massacre, rape, loot and burn Polish towns and villages along Poland's eastern border. It is one of the bloodiest untold stories of that bloody war. These events have never been forgotten, and certainly not forgiven. Payback will be demanded and it is inevitable. Just give the Poles one little opening and watch what happens.

This 'training' excercise has been running a while and is replicated all over especially Eastern Europe.

The important difference here is that the US is putting in a whole lot of MBTs and supporting armour. This is a huge upgrade to force capability compared to the current Airborne troops. Troops will continue to be rotated but now they will have real, full function weapons permanently stationed there and probably enhanced quietly in stages.

This is changing totally the balance of power in the area, in a few ways the Estonians may not have thought through.

In particular, after this happens they will be totally under the control of the US. Up to now it has just been political or economic power the US applies, but now they cannot say no to Uncle Sam or the tanks can roll into town, not Russian but US. Bit like the US MBTs going into Norway.

Expect to see this kind of 'upgrade' to US joint excercise all over the place. These 'friendly assistance' operations are another facit of the defend the $ at all costs operation.

In most countries this 'training' force will be the most powerful military grouping in the country, easily and quickly re-inforced by a couple of plane loads of extra soldiers that no-one would notice until it was too late. The change-over scam. Are these countries really that blind or stupid?

It will be very interesting how Putin responds to this.

If the US was trying to force the pace of the BRICS bank it is certainly going about it the right way.

Get real.

How many tanks is "600 troops with APCs and Tanks"?

Let me tell you.

14 tanks

14 APCs

You know why?

14 tanks is a tank company led by a 25 year old captain.

You know why they don't send a platoon (4 tanks led by a lieutenant)?

Because you don't send a kid fresh from college who doesn't need to shave overseas alone.

Each company consists of about 150 people.

You know how I know that there are only 2 companies?

It is because the "Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC)" of the battalion has all the mechanics, parts, fuel delivery vehcicles, etc required to keep them running... and HHC has over 250 people.

Tanks break down - A LOT.  They require HUGE amounts of fuel.  They need GIGANTIC movement support.  So even if you only sent ONE you'd have to send over about 50 support people.

So when they say '600' troops.  I understand immediately that this means the support (250+) plus whatever the actual fighting element is that will be in the exercise.  From there it is just simple subtraction.

Get real? I suspect that most people, especially politicians in East European Governments, would regard 14 Abrams and 14 Bradleys as a serious threat and better than their own probably old ex Soviet era armour. Estonia doesn't have any at all.

You make very valid points but I somehow doubt that there will be the normal direct link between soldier numbers and vehicles.

As you say this stuff can be very unreliable. It would therefor be extremely prudent to have more than is necessary for normal training operations. That way training would not be held up due to lack of hardware.

It would be easy to argue very reasonably to have say twice as many as were actually needed. Not a risk or threat to anyone as there would be no-one to operate them.

Until handover, when there could be 1200 not 600 boots on the ground. Then, 28 Abrams and the same number of Bradleys is a pretty good fighting force.

Militarism is not reassuring. Militarism is a sign of a lack of policy. I guess it would be too difficult for the unthinking Obama administration to demand another Crimean referendum or a negotiated peace between the ethnic Russian Ukrainians and the puppets of Kiev. We know we are completely screwed when the policy makers think it is acceptable to foist war on the world to distract us, rather than fix our own problems at home. The Obummer syndicate is bound to lose this war badly, why? Because it's about profit. "Remember it well we we we are the world we are what makes it go round we make bread and cloth and guns we are the hub of the wheel and the spokes and the wheel itself without us you would be hungry naked worms and we will not die. We are immortal we are the sources of life we are the lowly despicable ugly people we are the great wonderful beautiful people of the world and we are sick of it we are utterly weary we are done with it forever and ever because we are the living and we will not be destroyed.

If you make a war if there are guns to be aimed if there are bullets to be fired if there are men to be killed they will not be us. They will not be us the guys who grow wheat and turn it into food the guys who make clothes and paper and houses and tiles the guys who build dams and power plants and string the long moaning high tension wires the

guys who crack crude oil down into a dozen different parts who make light globes and sewing machines and shovels and automobiles and airplanes and tanks and guns oh no it will not be us who die. It will be you.

It will be you—you who urge us on to battle you who incite us against ourselves you who would have one cobbler kill another cobbler you who would have one man who works kill another man who works you who would have one human being who wants only to live kill another human being who wants only to live. Remember this. Remember this well you people who plan for war. Remember this you patriots you fierce ones you spawners of hate you inventors of slogans. Remember this as you have never remem- bered anything else in your lives.

We are men of peace we are men who work and we want no quarrel. But if you destroy our peace if you take away our work if you try to range us one against the other we will know what to do. If you tell us to make the world safe for democracy we will take you seriously and by god and by Christ we will make it so. We will use the guns you force upon us we will use them to defend our very lives and the menace to our lives does not lie on the other side of a nomansland that was set apart without our consent it lies within our own boundaries here and now we have seen it and we know it.

Put the guns into our hands and we will use them. Give us the slogans and we will turn them into realities. Sing the battle hymns and we will take them up where you left off. Not one not ten not ten thousand not a million not ten millions not a hundred millions but a billion two billions of us all the people of the world we will have the slogans and we will have the hymns and we will have the guns and we will use them and we will live. Make no mistake of it we will live. We will be alive and we will walk and talk and eat and sing and laugh and feel and love and bear our children in tranquillity in security in decency in peace. You plan the wars you masters of men plan the wars and point the way and we will point the gun.

Excellent observation general.

A cursory reading of articles by this particlar "reporter", reveals the fact that his main function is to serve as a stalking horse and trial balloon. He introduces a meme, and even if it falls flat or is exposed as false, TPTB still win, because it will be amplified and regurgitated plenty. If there is any retraction or correction (rare and huge if!), it is issued well after the meme has gone out and infected perceptions. It is published in print so fine that it requires an electron microscope to find, and receives zero media coverage.

The article in question is just flat-out atrocious. It would earn a failing grade even for a freshman journalism student.

Hey soldier-boy (gcjohns1971), you may think you are clever because you can roughly make the numbers fit into 600, but I doubt you are familiar with the "Ironhorse" MTOE. Even if you were, you have no idea how this particular detachment is organized. Yet that doesn't stop you from pretending to know how this particular force is organized. You proclaim their exact composition with the absolute certainty of ignorance.

Also... your head is up your fourth point of contact.

More than half of the "Russian forces massed on Ukraine's border" are inside Crimea. They would be there legally and well under the number authorized by treaty even if Crimea was still part of Ukraine. The smaller portion of the remaining Russian forces are dispersed across a 1,226 mile long border and inside the sovereign nation of Russia.

Nice try.

However, I fail to see the relevance of the 4th Infantry Division "IRONHORSE" MTO&E to a 1st CAV deployment.

You claim that I am ignorant while proving beyond a doubt that you are.

So, for a little more information.  Go look at the participants announcements for the exercise.

If you look at the ones dated before Yanukovich's ouster, you will see that RUSSIA WAS PARTICIPATING IN THE EXERCISE.

This means they helped plan it.

How is something the Russians helped plan a provocation to RUSSIA????

IT is not if you are sane and honest.

But the Russian Propaganchik trolls here are neither.

Oh man!! That is too funny!

No wonder you "fail to see the relevance of the 4th Infantry Division "IRONHORSE" MTO&E to a 1st CAV deployment"! You really don't know do you?

I see now that I gave you too much credit. Aw, screw it, i'm feeling frisky...

Hey Gomer Pyle, do you have that nice, steaming cup of shut-the-fuck-up with you? Good; I hope you prepared it to your personal taste, because I am going to spoon-feed it to you. Not only that, I will also help you extract your cranium from your fourth point of contact. What can I say? I am a great guy and I am here for you...

4th ID is the "Ivy Division". I never mentioned it and I have no idea why you would even think it is "Ironhorse". Here, take a look at the  official Army Special Designation Listing, and see what 4th ID is. (spoon fed hint-38 lines down).

The force of 600 comes from the 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division. Here is an organizational chart for 1st Cav. Take a look at the first Brigade; see it right there on the left? It is called "Ironhorse". To further hammer home the point, let's look at the official Fort hood page of 1st Brigade, 1st Cav. Once again, "Ironhorse". If you have any doubt you can also look at the official Army Special Designation Listing once again, and tell me what line 11 down says. That's right! "Ironhorse", and 4th ID is the "Ivy Division".

That is why I recommended that you review the Ironhorse MTOE. By the way, you do understand the difference between Mechanized, Armor, and Cavalry units right? If you do not, just let me know, and I will be happy to give you a block of instruction. If you do not know where to start your search, the FAS is happy to provide some rudimentary MTOE outlines for you.

You with me so far Gomer?

As to your certainty of the composition of forces, because you can make some approximate unit numbers fit into an arbitrary number (600), let me point some things out for you.

Army Col. Steven Warren told reporters that about 600 soldiers from the Fort Hood, Texas-based 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, will rotate to Poland as the next unit to participate in the reassurance initiative.“They are bringing training equipment, to include infantry fighting vehicles, cavalry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, M-1 Tanks, engineering equipment and other equipment organic to U.S. cavalry units.”

"Warren noted the 'Ironhorse' soldiers who will replace the 173rd Airborne Brigade will participate in the theater rotation exercise for about three months."

Got all that?

Armor companies do not have M-2 BFVs, CEVs, M9 ACEs, M-3 CFVs, M113s, etc... Neither does an HHC (or HSC for that matter). Clearly, this is a combined arms detachment.

There goes your simplistic "Two Armor companies with 14 M1s apiece and an HHC" concept. So it is back to the drawing board for you. Pull something else out of your ass and re-do your grade-school math to make the numbers fit.

"How is something the Russians helped plan a provocation to RUSSIA????"

I would ask if this is a joke, but you are clearly serious (which only makes it funnier).

Ooops, the cup is empty.

Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Distinguished masonic zionist Members of the Norwegian Nobe child raping Committee, citizens of medicated zombie America, and citizens of the talmudic fucked world:

I receive this honor with deep gratitude and great humility. It is an award that speaks to our highest aspirations - that for all the cruelty and hardship of our world, we are not mere prisoners of fate. Our actions matter, and can bend history in the direction of justice.

Yes, terrible wars have been fought, and atrocities committed. But there has been no Third World War. The Cold War ended with jubilant crowds dismantling a wall. Commerce has stitched much of the world together. Billions have been lifted from poverty. The ideals of liberty, self-determination, equality and the rule of law have haltingly advanced. We are the heirs of the fortitude and foresight of generations past, and it is a legacy for which my own country is rightfully proud.

Well, a war with Russa should be enough of a distraction for them to do what they want domestically... like finish turning America into full-fledged tyrany.

OK, since the world has gone complete retard, I've decided to go full rogue-fag.

<rouge fag>

Come on, guys and gals, let's get serious, like this:

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/dancing-stars-2014-season-19-pro-dan...

Wouldn't it be great if they had (the corpses) holograms of Robin Williams and Lauren Bacal dancing together in a tribute? It would be so surreal, so sweet.

I sure hope the US and Russia don't start a war before September 15, the highly-anticipated start of season 19 of Dancing with the Stars!!!!

We wouldn't want anything detracting from those beautiful people dancing, like the NFL always tries to do. Boo!!! on the NFL and boo, boo, boo on Putin, the war-monger.

God bless President Obomber. He pays my rent and washes my free car! Oh, how I want to suck his d.... well, a girl can dream, can't he?

I want to dance...

Yesterday the Dutch Safety Board announced it would publish its findings sometime in September.

The MSM did not pick up the story.  Probably the release will not suit the lies the MSM has been spreading these last two months.

Given the cruel bombardment of Donetsk and the current travesty of the Russian Relief convoy, it appears Washington, Kiev, and Brussels want to provoke Russia to some "unacceptable" reaction before the Dutch release their findings.

Then the Dutch findings would be drowned out by the MSM coverage of whatever Russia was provoked into doing.

And Washington, Kieve, and Brussels will then make Russia's reaction out to be more criminal than Ukraine's downing of MH17.

But compared to the three stooges trying to provoke him, Putin is a grandmaster and is unlikely to take the bait.

Given the stupidity of the West, my guess is that a missile will destroy some NATO equipment.

FALSE FLAG, OF COURSE.
