Reuters reports,
Ukrainian artillery destroyed a "significant" part of a Russian armoured column that crossed into Ukraine during the night, President Petro Poroshenko told British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday, according to the presidential website.
Separately, a Ukrainian military spokesman said Ukrainian forces had tracked the Russian armoured column as soon as it crossed onto Ukrainian soil."Appropriate actions were undertaken and a part of it no longer exists," military spokesman Andriy Lysenko told journalists.

While the white trucks came to a halt well short of Ukraine's border, a different Russian convoy did cross into Ukrainian territory late on Thursday evening.
The Guardian saw a column of 23 armoured personnel carriers, supported by fuel trucks and other logistics vehicles with official Russian military plates, travelling towards the border near the Russian town of Donetsk.
After pausing by the side of the road until nightfall, the convoy crossed into Ukrainian territory, using a rough dirt track and clearly crossing through a gap in a barbed wire fence that demarcates the border. Armed men were visible in the gloom by the border fence as the column moved into Ukraine.
Kiev has lost control of its side of the border in this area.
The trucks are unlikely to represent a full-scale official Russian invasion, and it was unclear how far they planned to travel inside Ukrainian territory and how long they would stay. But it was incontrovertible evidence of what Ukraine has long claimed – that Russian troops are active inside its borders.

The armoured column seen by the Guardian appeared to be further evidence of Russia's incursions, which the Kremlin has repeatedly denied.

Russia has to take seriously the statements by US leaders that they are "exceptional" and would act "unilaterally" and "pre-emptively" against so-called "potential threats".

Arty can destroy armor. Especially if the convoy was mostly BMP's, BMDs...those have light armor.
It's been a long time, but I seem to recall that most Russian armor moves at night. If you have your LP/OPs dug in where they can observe armor movement at choke points, then already have those choke points dialed in with your arty, you just let the column move up to the kill zone, then call for fire.
It's entirely possible, and not beyond the realm of possibilities. What I find interesting is the timing. It makes me wonder if Russia was counting on the US to be distracted enough with internal conflict (Ferguson---which is essentially a non-event) to launch an armored column----lost doing military excercises in Russia----into Ukraine?

No. I was a Military Officer for 30yrs and involved in Defence analysis. Russia would not put a few vulnerable APCs through the border without heavy weapon support. They will invade in Heavy battletanks or slide in unseen as special forces on foot. But this is not how a professional military operates. Hence its almost certainly another (in a long series) Kiev Fake to con the West into overeacting.

I have done no research yet today on the Ukraine situation. All I can say is that this story really sounds fishy in the extreme. There is no logic in the events, none at all. Speculation is all I could do, and that isn't good enough to post on.
