Charting Poverty In Ferguson: Then And Now
While there have been many socio-economic 'explanations and justifications' for the recent events in Ferguson, many of which have exceeded the realm of the factual and have brazenly encroached on feelings, emotions, heartstrings, and various other of the media's favorite manipulative mechanisms to achieve a desired outcome, the unpleasant reality is that much of what has transpired not only in the small 21,000-person St. Louis suburban community, but what is taking place across all of America has to do with a far simpler phenomenon: the rise of poverty and the destruction of America's middle class.
Here are some facts:
Ferguson has been home to dramatic economic changes in recent years. The city’s unemployment rate rose from less than 5 percent in 2000 to over 13 percent in 2010-12. For those residents who were employed, inflation-adjusted average earnings fell by one-third. The number of households using federal Housing Choice Vouchers climbed from roughly 300 in 2000 to more than 800 by the end of the decade.
Amid these changes, poverty skyrocketed. Between 2000 and 2010-2012, Ferguson’s poor population doubled. By the end of that period, roughly one in four residents lived below the federal poverty line ($23,492 for a family of four in 2012), and 44 percent fell below twice that level.
These changes affected neighborhoods throughout Ferguson. At the start of the 2000s, the five census tracts that fall within Ferguson’s border registered poverty rates ranging between 4 and 16 percent. However, by 2008-2012 almost all of Ferguson’s neighborhoods had poverty rates at or above the 20 percent threshold at which the negative effects of concentrated poverty begin to emerge. (One Ferguson tract had a poverty rate of 13.1 percent in 2008-2012, while the remaining tracts fell between 19.8 and 33.3 percent.)

The biggest concern, however, is that Ferguson is merely the canary in the coalmine. According to Brookings, within the nation’s 100 largest metro areas, the number of suburban neighborhoods where more than 20 percent of residents live below the federal poverty line more than doubled between 2000 and 2008-2012. Almost every major metro area saw suburban poverty not only grow during the 2000s but also become more concentrated in high-poverty neighborhoods. By 2008-2012, 38 percent of poor residents in the suburbs lived in neighborhoods with poverty rates of 20 percent or higher. For poor black residents in those communities, the figure was 53 percent.
Like Ferguson, many of these changing suburban communities are home to out-of-step power structures, where the leadership class, including the police force, does not reflect the rapid demographic changes that have reshaped these places.
Suburban areas with growing poverty are also frequently characterized by many small, fragmented municipalities; Ferguson is just one of 91 jurisdictions in St. Louis County. This often translates into inadequate resources and capacity to respond to growing needs and can complicate efforts to connect residents with economic opportunities that offer a path out of poverty.
And as concentrated poverty climbs in communities like Ferguson, they find themselves especially ill-equipped to deal with impacts such as poorer education and health outcomes, and higher crime rates. In an article for Salon, Brittney Cooper writes about the outpouring of anger from the community, “Violence is the effect, not the cause of the concentrated poverty that locks that many poor people up together with no conceivable way out and no productive way to channel their rage at having an existence that is adjacent to the American dream.”
We have warned all along that the Fed's disastrous policies are splitting the nation in two, creating a tiny superclass of uber-wealthy oligrachs, and a vast majority of disgruntled, disenfranchised poor. It is the latter, whose life of squalor and poverty, has left them with little if anything to lose. Unless dramatic and rapid changes take place within the executive levels of the US corporato-banking oligrachy and its D.C. puppets, very soon "Ferguson-type" occurences, where participatnts could care less if the S&P 500 closed at a fresh all time record high, will become a daily, and very deadly, occurence. All thanks to the Fed's dual mandate of "maximum employment and stable inflation."

And as a tangent, we must say that we find the fact that none other than former Fed chairman Ben Bernanke is now a Distinguished Fellow in Residence with the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution, the source of most of the above data, to be ironic beyond words.

I agree. The government enforced fractional reserve fiat money system squelches people. It robs people of the power of choice, it steals their work in an invisible manner, by handing out influence to the favored few, by creating unnecessary complexity, while watering down the"dollar vote" of the ordinary man.

The 1990 U.S. Census reports Ferguson was 73.8 percent white merely 24 years ago versus roughly 28 percent white today.
The city was 25.1 percent black in 1990, versus 67 percent black today. Conversely, Normandy High School (perhaps named for when the all-white US Army stormed Normandy Beach in France on June 6, 1944...) is now one of the most dangerous high schools in all of Missouri... and it's 97 percent black.
Ferguson, the same city burning now thanks to black riots, had 22,286 residents according to the 1990 U.S. Census (p. 37): of those, 16,454 were white and 5,589 were black...

This report breaks down violent crime and the overall percentage of the racial group arrested for each offense (note because of lack of trust with police, many violent crimes/homicides lack suspects. The black community would rather have criminals among them than in jail).

As I've posted earlier, as north St. Louis, heavily poor black loaded with gangs, crack, violence, unskilled and uneducatable youth, became utterly unlivable, the population migrated into the nearby north suburbs (e.g. Ferguson) and the whites fled. The same has occurred in much of south St. Louis, which was once a very safe working to middle class city. Now large pockets of that area faced black migration from north St. Louis and are now dangerous, decaying zones of wonderful historic architecture. These are places I grew up around and it is so sad to see these profoundly negative changes in a single lifetime.

At least 20 patients believed to be suffering from Ebola have fled a quarantine clinic in Liberia after protesters reportedly broke down the doors and looted the building, sparking fears of a serious health risk.
Tolbert Nyenswah, the assistant health minister, said protesters were apparently displeased that patients were being brought in for treatment from different parts of the capital. Other reports suggested they were concerned Ebola is a hoax.
West Point residents went on a "looting spree," stealing items from the clinic that were likely infected, a senior police official told the Associated Press. The residents took medical equipment, mattresses and sheets that had bloodstains, he said.
"All between the houses you could see people fleeing with items looted from the patients," the official said, adding that he now feared "the whole of West Point will be infected."
West Point is home to at least 50,000 people. The patients' whereabouts remain unknown.

Inflation is the prime mechanism of earnings theft, impoverishment and 'dependency' generation.

The implications of poor job creation are massive. Many of the problems we see in Ferguson might to traced back to this. The biggest may be that a huge number of people are dropping from the work force. Often these people have little in the way of savings, this means that the burden of caring for them will be transferred to society.
If to many people shift into this category we will slowly wear down through attrition. Finding a fair way to share and balance the work load that goes on every day may be one of the most important problems facing our modern world. Not discovering a solution to this dilemma bodes poorly for our consumer driven economy and adds to the toxic problem of inequality. More on the implications of unemployment in the article below.

Our demographics are getting older, less white, more highly governed and taxed. Government sucks resources from the economy, an aging population earns less than when younger, a white population historically produces more economically than a darker population (really sorry to say that aloud, but stats are stats). The US government is not getting smaller, the population is not getting whither, and the population is not getting younger. TPTB know all of this but can do noting about this even if they cared, so our future is set as a one of decline with future politicians claiming to have magical solutions such as 'hope and change'. This phenomenon isn't peculiar to just Ferguson, MO. With minor variations this decline is/hasbeen going on all over the country for the past several decades.

At the root of this great degeneration is the internationalist nightmare of "Free Trade". The IMF, BIS, Exim bank, FED, The North American Free Trade Union, and all central banks are the tools with which these international demons are bringing about the destruction of the American/Western nations.
China's rise to power is illusionary and will be brief. China will crash in foreign economic and military adventures which the Chinese central planners will engage in to attempt to mitigate the problem of two hundred more males in the population than females due to their short-sighted "one-child" policy which led to the extermination of hundreds of millions of females at birth.
The Bushes, The Clintonistas, and now the Ovomit communist/fascist/muscum cabal are just the fronts for the internationalist demons that lurk in the governmental shadows of every Western nation.
Ovomit is assisting the murdering muscums in the MENA regions to acquire modern weapons, chemical, biological, and nuclear as much by omission as by any observable assistance. His ostensible blundering and incompetence in both foreign and domestic governance, or lack thereof, is intentional and serves the purposes of both the Western internationalists and the stone-age savages that are expected to start WWIII in the MENA region.
By the end of this mess, one-half of the current human population of the earth will have been exterminated. But such success in their plans will not accrue to the benefit of the demons who are responsible for executing the human tragedy that lies before us.

I hear the community of Ferguson saying "We need to fix this". But the reporters on the seen never ask what the hell these people think needs"fixing".
The assumption is that the death of that young Thug is the issue that these poor black people are referring to but they are mostly wrong. Yes, many want justice but it is economic justice that they want most.
The issue is the hopeless poverty. That is what they think needs "fixing". The "disaffected youth" have created a subculture of gangsta' lifestyle as their only road to the illusion of empowerment. But the elders of the town know the real score.
So this problem in Ferguson is more about Class than race and race is just the convenient proxy category that the angry, uneducated folks in the Gangsta subculture and in the wider white community can bring themselves to name. "Class" is so 1920s, right?
Again, race is not it. This -is- about Class and wealth inequality and generations left out of the shared prosperity that came and went so many years ago.
Today it is a black ghetto called Ferguson. Tomorrow it will be some poor white neighborhood in Appalachia or in Flint Michigan or in someplace we least expect it..
