California Now Suffering Worst Drought Ever, 2014 Hottest Year On Record

Tyler Durden's picture

While most headlines are focused on the devastating drought in California, which by some measures is the worst on record, there is another 'factor' that has exploded to record highs - the heat. As Bloomberg reports, the California heat this year is like nothing ever seen, with records that go back to 1895 and with 70 percent of the state’s pastures rated “very poor to poor,” according to the USDA, things do not appear to be about to get better any time soon.

As Bloomberg reports,

The California heat this year is like nothing ever seen, with records that go back to 1895. The chart below shows average year-to-date temperatures in the state from January through July for each year. The eastern half of the U.S. has had an unusually cool 2014, but it's a lone exception compared to the rest of the planet.

The high temperatures have contributed to one of the worst droughts in California's history. The water reserves in the state’s topsoil and subsoil are nearly depleted, and 70 percent of the state’s pastures are rated “very poor to poor,” according to the USDA. By one measure, which takes into account both rainfall and heat, this is the worst drought ever.

Perhaps more worryingly,

The International Panel on Climate Change, which includes more than 1,300 scientists, forecasts temperatures to rise 2.5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit over the next century.

That puts California's record heat well within the range of what’s to come, turning this “hot weather” into, simply, “weather.”

The reason the temperature has spiked in 2014 is easy to explain. Methane levels in the northern hemisphere are very high right now, due to the destabilization of methane hydrates around the Arctic, by warm Gulf Stream waters flowing into the Arctic ocean. The methane is right over the USA as I write.

There are lots of good articles to read about this:

The southern region I live in typically sees triple digits for the better part of a month.  Have barely hit 90 for all of about 2 weeks scattered throught the summer time.  I don't see how this can be called the HOTTEST YEAR ON RECORD.   Unless of course only the temps in California count which is very likely considering the intellectual dishonesty that runs rampant with lies, damned lies and stats.

Oddly our winter was about as harsh as I've seen it.  Lived in this area 8 years.  Previous 2 summers were brutal.  A mild winter.  The this past winter was filled with snow and ice storms causing the schools to close for 17 days.  Had to be some kind of record.  Then the summer months came but summer was nowhere to be found much to the chagrin of pool and boat owners.   I didn't complain as I hate the hot as humid weather!

So those decades of climate intitiatives along with much higher taxes to pay for them have resulted in the worst drought ever for the area?  Wow if nothing else it should prove that higher taxes accomplishes nothing and man has zero ability to affect the weather in a positive fashion.

I will go on record as saying the responsibility for mankind to keep the earth as pollution free as possible is the right thing to do and a very noble pursuit, not from a climate changing perspective but more of a moral responsiblity.  We should not be a nation of pigs but we should also be humble enough to realize that we cannot control weather patterns by raising taxes for the privilege of using and manufacturing energy.

If the use and manufacturing of energy is known to be harmful without qualification then shame on the government for allowing the practice to continue for another day and then have the temerity to say "we know its destroying the planet but if you pay enough money to buy carbon credits we will still let you destroy the planet.  If you can't afford the price, fuck you and be on your way."  A certain amount of hypocrisy in that government message that I have never been able to reconcile in an intellectually honest way.

And if you don't agree with us we will call you a "DENIER".   OOOHHH that's so hurtful.  Stick and stones...

What climate initiatives? All along  America has refused to do any.

That's what's driven the problem to be so bad.

Funny how the only nation on Earth in denial, America, can only sustain is economy on petro-dollars.

Funny how everyone else who isn't America sees global warming is real.

Literally on Earth it's hard to find a single denier who isn't American.

looking at the longer term 60-Month chart, the longest NOAA provide, we find that many previous periods in California have been much drier. Perhaps the most serious and long running drought was during the 1920’s and  and 30’s. The blue lines, by the way, are trends lines (not means). As the legend shows, precipitation trends are basically flat across the 110 year record.

I guess those California farmers had better learn about things like drought adapted melons and tepary beans, which, BTW, are awesome.

First grown in the Southwest during ancient times, tepary beans (Phaseolus acutifolius) mature quickly and are tolerant of the low desert heat, drought and alkaline soils. They are among the most drought and heat tolerant crops in the world. Tepary beans are high in protein and contain soluble fiber helpful in controlling cholesterol and diabetes. Generally white tepary beans have a slightly sweet flavor and brown tepary beans have an earthy flavor. Tepary beans can be used in place of any standard dried bean. Soak the dried beans before cooking. They are best planted with the mid-summer monsoon rains characteristic of the Southwest, unless otherwise stated. They generally do not tollerate wet conditions and clay soils.  Approx. 7g/50 seeds per packet.

http://shop.nativeseeds.org/collections/tepary-beans

They do well in poor soils with little water.  Put them in rich soils with a little irrigation (not much) and you'll be cussing them because one plant will easially put out 100 pods if not more, which means a lot of shelling.  Grow one to three seed packets and you should get enough seed from the plants to plant an entire acre the next year.  I like to make my beans in the canner.  One piece of bacon, some crushed garlic ~1 tsp salt and ~1tsp of baking soda for a quart, half that for a pint.  Teparies will come out tasting sweet and buttery.

EDIT:  1 cup of dried beans per quart with a processing time of 90 minutes, or 1/2 cup for pints with a processing time of 75 minutes.  In both, leave about an inch of headspace in the jar.  I can everything at 15psi due to my altitude.  Not sure for you lowlanders.  This is not an FDA approved method, but 75-90 minutes in what is fundamentally an autoclave for food is going to kill shit dead.

Los Angeles temperature has been below average almost every day this year, well, since about March anyway.  If the winter months were a degree or three above average in the accompanying drought, that is misleading.  Basically I don't believe the claim, period.  Of course the drought is real enough, though just how novel that is is another matter.

Death Valley, Calif., which is known for being the world’s hottest location, maxed out at a relatively chilly 89 degrees on Sunday. This temperature – nearly 30 degrees below average – was its coolest high temperature on record for the date by a whopping 15 degrees. The previous record of 104 was set in 1945.

This was only the eighth time that a high in the 80s has occurred in Death Valley in July or August, and there hasn’t been a high less than 90 since 1984. Weather records in Death Valley go back to 1911.

Locations that were hotter than Death Valley yesterday include Spokane Wash. (93), Missoula, Mont. (91),  Casper, Wy. (92), and Boise, Idaho (99).
