The Ferguson Morning After: Police "Come Under Heavy Gunfire", Arrest 31 Including Photographer, Journalist
The local authorities have tried everything: aggressive police, appeasing highway patrol, curfew, no curfew, and last night, the national guard. Nothing seems to work. Because what until 9 pm was a peaceful protest, it quickly, as documented here extensively, spiraled out of control. And as the crowd advanced, police fired stun grenades and tear gas at protesters. This escalation allegedly happened after, as Reuters reports, the police came under heavy gunfire leading to the arrest of 31 people, including a famous Getty photographer and yet another journalist.
State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, briefing reporters on Monday's night's violence, said "our officers came under heavy gunfire" in one area.
The good news: an all out bloodbath was avoided: "Not a single bullet was fired by officers despite coming under heavy attack," he told a news conference. Riot police had confiscated two guns from protesters and what looked like a petrol bomb. Four officers had been injured. Others too:
Johnson separately told CNN that two people were shot within the crowd, but not by police, and were taken to hospital. There was no immediate word on their condition.
The violence has captured headlines around the world, raising questions about the state of U.S. race relations nearly six years after Americans elected their first black president.
"This has to stop. I don't want anybody to get hurt. We have to find a way to stop this," said Johnson, an African-American who grew up in the area and who took over security efforts after the mostly white local force was accused of using excessive force against blacks.
Unfortunately for the president who took some time off from his well-deserved 2-week vacation, his racial fire and brimstone speech, which took jabs at both the police and protesters, had zero impact on the local population. "While I understand the passions and the anger that arise over the death of Michael Brown, giving in to that anger by looting or carrying guns, and even attacking the police, only serves to raise tensions and stir chaos," Obama told a news conference on Monday. "It undermines, rather than advancing, justice."
What's more troubling is that the Ferguson protest movement is beginning to spread to other cities. For now, it is peaceful.
There have been largely peaceful protests over Brown's killing elsewhere in the United States including in St. Louis, New York, Seattle and Oakland. Police commander Johnson said some of those arrested had come from California and New York.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Ferguson on Saturday and a curfew from midnight to 5 a.m. He also mobilized the National Guard to back up state police.
Obama said he told the governor the use of the National Guard should be limited and called for conciliation in communities hit by the unrest.
And if the one man paragon of true justice, US attorney general Eric Holder, who is arriving in Ferguson on Wednesday, and is also taking time away from his busy schedule of arresting countless bankers for crimes conducted during the financial crisis and after, can't put the looting genie in the bottle, then all bets are off.
Finally, what is worst of all, is that in its scramble to put away any potentially threatening element, the local polica arrested not only Getty's famous photographer Scott Olson...

Intercept Reporter Detained While Covering Ferguson Protests
Intercept reporter Ryan Devereaux was detained this morning while on the ground covering the protests in Ferguson, Mo. According to St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer David Carson, who witnessed the apprehension, Ryan and a German reporter he was with were both taken into custody by members of a police tactical team. They were handcuffed and placed in a wagon, and Carson was told they were being taken to St. Louis County jail.
We haven’t been able to reach officials with the St. Louis County Police Department or Ferguson Police Department to find out if Ryan has been arrested or charged, or under what pretext he was detained. But needless to say, it’s an outrage that he was stopped and handcuffed by police in the course of lawfully doing his job on the streets of Ferguson. We are trying to contact Ryan now.
At a press conference early this morning, Missouri Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson told reporters in Ferguson that 31 arrests had been made, including members of the “criminal element” from “as far away as New York.” When asked by a reporter if any of those 31 had been reporters, he immediately–and falsely–replied, “these people were not journalists that were arrested.”
But he quickly admitted that in the “chaos” of the protests, officers may not be able to distinguish between reporters and other bystanders: “So yes, we may take some of you into custody. But when we do take you into custody, and we have found out that you are a journalist, we have taken the proper action.” This begs the question as to why police would be compelled to arrest an otherwise law-abiding non-journalist simply for attending a protest. But we insist that the St. Louis County Police Department, Ferguson Police Department, and Missouri Highway Patrol take the proper action and release Ryan Devereaux immediately.

Really says something that this was Obama's job before he was a politician, someone that could connect to the inner city people and find common ground and even that function seems to have abandoned him. He really speaks for nobody at this point. What Ferguson says is a whole bunch of things:
1. Race relations can never be "fixed", there is simply different levels of simmering
2. Wealth inequality is creating more desperation for the "have-nots" which will result in creating opportunity if none presents itself
3. Any inter-racial issue will be blown out of proportion with cel-phones, twitter, media and pseudo-politicians throwing gas on the fire
4. The militarization of the police state is real and will be pushed by the Pentagon to fill the spending vaccuum created by little political will for new wars (ie. read that the military business is happy about Ferguson escalation which is busily being added to powerpoint slides for new city police crowd control purchasing)
5. The anger on the white side of the racial issue is a real and strong as the black side
6. Hispanics have quietly pushed blacks to a new lower rung on the race ladder through higher birth rates, education and moving into the political arena
7. Blue collar jobs for the un or under-educated are becoming more scarce
8. The "handout society" accelerated by Bill Clinton has created a new more apathetic underclass where inequality and misfortune is all put upon you vs. something you created.
9. Working in the US isn't worth it unless you make can net $18/hr. Prison, welfare and/or disability afford a $32K annual "lifestyle".
10. Expect it all to get worse and for the "haves" to increasingly to have armed guards and to build super yacht escape plans

I've been in Ferguson. People claiming Ferguson police are trained to act in a certain way are over-estimating the quality of the police force in Ferguson. This is a small department that gets low level candidates. If they were decent officers, they'd be working in far better neighborhoods like Kirkwood, Ladue or St Peters.
People here calling for rounding up black people and using police state tactics on them sound just like the bolsheviks you supposedly despise. The problem with the 'everything is because of corrupt elites' position is that it leads to calls for disposing the elites while ignoring the systemic foundations of what is going on. There is something you can learn from the critique of bolshevism, from authoritarianism.
Bolshevism was supposedly a form of absolute top-down control, this is why libertarians tend to hate it. In reality people themselves played a part in enforcing the system: they too called for rounding up kulaks, they also used the language which contributed to isolation of the kulaks and their being liquidated.
If there are diffuse methods of control within a totalitarian system what do you think occurs in a diffuse system? Even more diffuse methods of control. Meaning that the people are the state. You are the state if you have a position of wealth or power in a capitalist democracy. Or you are contributing to the management of the state in the use of its language, in calling for the same things the police state wants.
Blacks were slaves in America from the very beginning. They did not need a centralised state to control this as the slave-owners themselves developed methods of a small and decentralised state. And yes, the slaves themselves develop methods which can contribute to their own continuation within slavery. And yes, black 'folks' tend to reconstruct their own manners of subservience, just as white 'folks' do. But this is generally a matter of response, of taking on the role given by some direction, or just a defense mechanism for survival. But the heart of the problem is more difficult, as Nietzsche suggested, we have to go beyond master and slave morality.
Nothing has changed. Black people are still slaves, just now it is a diffuse form of slavery within the manipulation of the market. Most white 'folks' are slaves as well, if not in economy then in spirit, in mind. There are many forms of slavery. Now we are all slaves to a system attempting to construct a second-reality through the use of psyops.
The deep state is not centralised, it masks itself, is a form of government shadowing itself outside of the traditional forms. The state no longer appears in the buildings it names, that is just the aesthetic state. The state is in the shadows. In short, we must ask ourselves if this shadow government is following us. Is it in our language? Is it in our calls for violence? Is it in our class? Is it in our reconstruction of racial division? Is it in the ideas of capitalism? Has it corrupted my own ideals?
The lesson to be taken from COINTELPRO is that the state can never fund enough police and so has to cause the police and intelligence operations to filter throughout society, cause individuals to become free laboured psyops, to become slaves to intelligence. That is the state now, encrypting information into the 'social' discourse and its activity, its future. How close is the shadow government to you?
Similar tactics will show up in white 'communities'. In cordons, and sophisticated public relations will be used to ensure people will be calling for your slaughter as well. Don't become a surrogate of the intelligence state.

You raise some very interesting points, and put into words the general disquiet and distrust I've developed over the years for our society. Its true that there can never be enough police or military to control the US. It just isn't possible. There aren't enough police or military to provide personal security for all of the law-makers, heads of corporations, bureaucratic heads and functionaries...let alone the familiy members of all these people. Then the police and military members themselves.
Things that were derided as mere conspiracy theory in the past have turned out to be true, time and time again. The government, and shadow government are exerting control over our daily lives, and numbing the population to all of the trangressions and usurpation of powers. Its seemingly a never-ending stream these days, and sometimes it appears that they push their agenda as far as they possibly can, tell the media what to publish, and then sit back to assess the outcome. The longer this continues, the more aggressive "they" become, because "we've" allowed it.

We've finally drawn a bright red line. An authority executing an unarmed, surrendering suspect is wrong. However, this is after we've drawn some grey lines: a drone killing an unarmed person on foreign soil by surprise is currently ok, even if they're completely innocent. And a clear line: executing a convicted person is not only ok, but is to be celebrated. So taken together, this means that police will rapidly be acquiring drones and finding many 'imminent' threats on the streets by 'terrorists' such as Mike Brown committing such atrocities as smoking marijuana (i.e., funding terrorist organizations) and going on rampages of robbery, being black, and planning terrorist attacks (detailed via rap lyrics). What I have been told by people in the LEO training business is that " it is cheaper to bury a cop than to train them" with current budget issues in most departments, I bet training is down to a bare minimum.
It's probably always been that way. After I got out of the USMC, and was a very poor college student, I considered joining the Highway Patrol in my state. My background was impeccable, I had a year to go until I completed my engineering degree, had a TS clearance, and lots and lots of training. I easily made it through the screening process, then all of the subsequent cuts in class sizes. We had a mini-boot camp, where I finally got to meet my future classmates. After I began talking with them, I became concerned. I quickly realized that I wouldn't trust any of them with a weapon behind me. In our exit interview from the mini-boot camp with the Director, I told him that I was no longer interested in the job, and why. He was furious! HAHAHAHAHAHA. These guys were supposed to be the cream of the crop for my state LEO community.

I haven't commented on Ferguson much. But my perspective regarding your comment is this.
This is an isolated incident.
And to clearify by the use of isolated, I am referring to the actual rioting. It isn't nationwide. To add to that, I don't think it is the general population that is rioting. They are protesting. It is some thugs, many that I have read aren't even residents of Ferguson, that are doing the violence.
In other words, TSHTF hasn't happened yet.

That's why they are doing everything they can to disarm the poor and the middle class (soon to be poor). They control the MSM and so it takes a while for tyranny to finally sink in because everyone is conditioned to follow the flag to perdition. They haven't noticed that we don't do empire well but that is where TPTB want to lead us as global starship troopers doing their dirty work of building their global empire. Many people don't know who the traitors are. Many don't know that slavery has morphed from a condition where your labor is forced to one where your wealth is confiscated in financial endgames. Where masses of naive "investors" are herded from financial killing field to financial killing field and alternatives are proscribed. The masses are being reduced to serfdom and it is only slowly sinking in. Many people don't really even recognize value. They still think paper fiat is money.
Personally, I think people are starting to shove government back and resist tyranny, petit et grand. This year it got kicked off at Bundy Ranch. Now it is Ferguson, MO. TPTB divide us with all sorts of methods. Racism, class envy, gender, political correctness, abortion, security, blah, blah, blah! Anything to keep us off balance. It isn't working perfectly and the tyranny is being exposed.
With respect to the Ferguson events, I think that many are waiting to see how the shooting story evolves. I prefer to not jump to conclusion. I think many erudite commenters are waiting for information to seep out. Racists and agitators of all stripes have leaped to fan the hysteria. I want more information and I think I'm not alone. It is ironic that the biggest looters have control while the little ones are targeted by the good cop/bad cop agencies. Everything becomes a political football in a democracy but the important stuff is scarcely noticed.

They became slaves when they checked out of the education system in the 6th grade and spent the next ten years hanging out on street corners. Their roll models are gangsters and rappers. They will grab a store clerk by the throat and steal his cigars, and not think anything of it. They get all their shit for free, and STILL can't make a go of it. They have tons of preferential treatment, but simply won't do the hard nasty work of bettering themselves. Do you think even one of those looting and rioting animals has a Ferguson library card? Or a real job that they worked their ass off (and remains covered with pants) to qualify for?
What's the annual salary on one of the 'real jobs'? Where do we apply for these 'real jobs'?
There are plenty of good jobs out there. Very few good applicants.
I used to help hire in an inner city, for real jobs. Very few were actually employable. Here is why:
you have to be literate. Not simply a high school graduate, but actually literate and able to do basic math. BTW, the drop out rate is well over 50%.....so this pretty much dooms one from a good job that only requires a GED.
You need a fairly clean criminal record.
You cannot be smoking dope. All jobs drug test now, even McJobs.
You cannot have tattoos all over you neck, and you cannot have a gold grill or look like a gangsta if you are going to have a good job representing a good company.
And you have to speak English at least decently.
And most jobs now require a decent or blank credit profile, or at least not a bad one. But this is the least of the problems.
Incidentally, these are the reasons why the local cops could not hire Black residents according to an article I read. They simply could not find enough qualified applicants.

After non-compliance with the order to get out of the street, probably responded to with a bunce of deregatory language, the cop is pissed, backs-up to the perp in an aggressive manner and attempts to exists the car which in immediate proxity to the perp (stupid and dangerous police work). The perp slams the door on the cop, probably inflicing alot of pain. The perp delivers a bunch of punches to the cop in the car, at which time the cop discharges his weapon trying to incapaciate the perp, but misses. The perp runs away at this time. The cop had to make a decision at this point. Either call for backup and try to arrest this perp in a non-lethal manner, or continue to apply lethal force. After the perp fled, the cop was not in immediate danger for his life, and the use of deadly force would be questionable. Something happened to make this perp stop fleeing, turn around and then charge the cop.
From my view, this is about cops who are badge heavy, mistreat a citizen, and then cover it up, or justify it. While this is a statistically small part of the police forces, istis very corrosive. The problem is that the police will not police themselves. I recentlyt recall the CA highway patrolman pummel a woman on the freeway, and the cops say it was by the book. The claim that no curfew was enforced last night appears to be inaccurate. The governor announced that no curfew would be enforced, however the police lines ordered protestors to leave at 11:45pm and ordered the media to leave the area and return to the law enforcement press conference area. There seems to be a large disparity between the live video streams and the next morning's media reports.

The audio was slightly muffled, and a reporter with KARG Argus radio confirmed the audio as, "Get the f*** out of here or I will shoot you with this."
Reporters have been arrested and detained since the start of the protests, including journalists for the Washington Post and Huffington Post. The video of the confrontation can be viewed here.
