St.Louis PD Release 'Suicide-By-Cop' Shooting Clip
As we noted previously, just days after the fatal shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson, a 2nd officer-involved shooting ended in death for the suspect just miles from Ferguson. St.Louis Police Department - in the interests of transparency - have released video of both the alleged shoplifting and the so-called 'suicide-by-cop' shooting itself of 25-year-old Kajieme Powell.."Powell approached the officers when they arrived, yelling at them to shoot him already. When he ignored commands to drop the knife, the two officers fired a total of 12 shots."
As St.Louis public radio reports,
Powell was suspected of shoplifting energy drinks and donuts from a convenience store. The shop owner, believing that Powell was carrying a weapon, contacted police.
Another witness, Ald. Dionne Flowers, who represents the area and owns a beauty salon in the same block, noticed that Powell was acting erratically and also called police. Flowers told police she saw a second knife, though only one was recovered at the scene.
Powell approached the officers when they arrived, yelling at them to shoot him already.
When he ignored commands to drop the knife, the two officers fired a total of 12 shots. Chief Sam Dotson said the knife was like a steak knife.

Last month a SLC cop looking for a missing child walked into a resident's back yard without knocking or informing the owner and shot his dog dead - the dog was in the back corner of a fenced yard - the officer opened the gate and entered the back yard without a warrant or notification.
What irks me is that there is no national coverage of the shootings of Whites, who are unarmed, by the police.
If a black is shot or a Latino or an Asian believe me the respective communities GET OUT ON THE STREETS get lawyered up and MAKE HELL TO PAY. Whereas whites don't even care about their fellow whites but many whites REALLY care about non-whites.
Let me tell you something, there was a case several years ago now where a White fellow was waiting on line in a pizza place which was FILLED with white males. A black female, large, cut the line, the white guy said, madam I've been waiting here for a while now and please go to the back of the line. Well she MF'd this and MF'd that then got on her cellphone and called her Michael Brown sized bf who came in and started beating the shit out of the little white guy, starting off with a good-old SUCKER PUNCH. And do you know what? Not a single white came to the aid of the white victim they all stood around looking everywhere else. This was on youtube for a bit before the censors took it down. Every time there is a fight in public between say a Latino or a black or an asian and a white EVERY other latino or black or asian will come to the aid of their racial comrade, whites? NEVER.

I think cops are working in a neighborood where they get fearful, and sometimes act stupidly. They have no clue.

How fast the distance can be closed is relevant. You have 1.5 seconds to react to an attacker 21 feet away with a knife. Do you know for sure that you would be able to "taze" him? Those things do not always hit what you intend. Stun gun, you have to be in closer than the length of the knife.
I am not certain that was a good shooting. I am not as certain as a lot folks here seem to be that it was unwarranted.

I have a hard time seeing the video as mitigation. On the one hand, sure, guy had a knife and was advancing towards the cops.
On the other hand, 12 shots seems like "yeehaw permission to kill". If they shot him twice would he have kept coming? Ok im the king of second guessing here but seriously.

This looks like another execution to me. Why the police came so close to Powell, when they knew Powell had a weapon? Probably they made the decision to kill him before they arrived. In any other democarcy police would have acted differently. There are plenty of options in such a situation. Sadly, it confirms the cliches of America in the eyes of the rest of the world.
So the cops stepped out of the car and resorted to lethal force in less than 20 seconds after their boots touched the ground. I wonder how those two would have reacted if they saw someone acting irrationally and swinging large metallic clubs at a golf course at Martha's Vineyards.

Do they not know how to wound someone? In South Africa the police are under such pressure not shoot someone since they will be arrested and charged with murder first until the incident is investigated and they are cleared, or not, of wrong doing. Because of this, they will shoot to injure first, only if that dosen't work will they go lethal. 12 shots! and one knife. They would be in prison for life over here.

No Offense. I love ZH. But everyone here is making the common mistake of looking at the outcomes instead of the underlying causes......
The underlying cause is we have a good portion of the population that wants to break the law, challenge authority, and doesnt have a job/future. Why isnt this being addressed? I know it involves color but it has to change eventually right? As a young graduate, I am already seeing/experiencing the workforce changning... No longer can people who just want to get by and not really try, get the standard of living they used to. In order to have that standard of living now, you have to work your ass off and most likely be qualified in certian skills... The point is as technology and the workforce evolve, these people are going to get farther and farther behind and what are we going to do then?
As I mentioned, I love ZH and the comments are priceless, I just wished we could focus on some realistic solutions to these problems....
Unfortunately, a big part of human nature is trying to do the minimum to get by. The short answer is you need to always work on improving your job skills, irrespective of what career path you take.
Those that fall through the cracks look to those that are successful for assistance. If there is too much socialization, too many are looking for assistance as they see it as an entitlement. Just as those look for assistance are trying to do the minimum to get by, those who are successful also try to do the minimum assisting the repair of society's fabric. The successful want a good life and for many, they encapsulate themselves in the good life. That's not a very Christian thing to do. That being said, those who refuse to use common sense to look after themselves are not being very Christian either.
Check with your parents and relatives to see what things were like in the 1980's. If you are living in the North Eastern part of the country, there were gut wrenching changes in society as whole industries were wound down. Many towns lost their main employer and many social problems were magnified.
Today we could have easily had the same problems as were had in the 1980's. The political decision was made to print our way out of our difficulties. At the present time, it looks like it worked. The only problem is we have not been presented with the bill. There was a hope that the scare of 2008-2009 would cause people to reconsider their approach. That did not happen.
Going forward, as interest rates increase, we will see many left behind. Some as a result of their actions. Others will be the result of collective events. (Think of a business leader in Ferguson. What can they do going forward?)
At the community level, you help where you can. You can best determine what level of involvement you can provide. As a word of advice, don't spend your time live tweeting social disturbances in your area. That will only get you shot. Many people, including police, will line up to take that shot.

Curare darts are an option?...not fatal necessarily and fairly instant action...plus an antidote can be administered after disarming and cuffing....just saying? (Cops always talk about the delay for sedative darts or those not so vulnerable to tasers).
Also for knife wielders not near anyone (like this fellow) why can't the cops keep their distance instead of closing to the point they are in danger as in this video?
