What's $100 Really Worth In Each State?

Tyler Durden's picture

Because average prices for similar goods are much higher in California or New York than in Mississippi or South Dakota, The Tax Foundation notes points out that the same amount of dollars will buy you comparatively less in the high-price states, or comparatively more in low-price states. Regional price differences are strikingly large, and have serious policy implications. The same amount of dollars are worth almost 40 percent more in Mississippi than in DC, and the differences become even larger if metro area prices are considered instead of statewide averages.

For example, Tennessee is a low-price state, where $100 will buy what would cost $110.25 in another state that is closer to the national average. You can think of this as meaning that Tennesseans are about ten percent richer than their nominal incomes suggest.

The states where $100 is worth the least are the District of Columbia ($84.60), Hawaii ($85.32), New York ($86.66), New Jersey ($87.64), and California ($88.57). That same money goes the furthest in Mississippi ($115.74), Arkansas ($114.16), Missouri ($113.51), Alabama (113.51), and South Dakota ($113.38).

A person who makes $40,000 a year after tax in Kentucky would need to have after-tax earnings of $53,000 in Washington, DC just in order to have an equal standard of living, let alone feel richer.

Would have been much more accurate if they had just asked the price of a rock and a BJ in each state.

With 1 out of 3 Americans reported to be out for collection for some unpaid bill or another, and with Nevada reported to have 47% of its citizens (or non-citizens?) out for collection, it's time for Harry Reid to raise taxes on Nevadans.  I think they totally deserve it.  I think people in Nevada should pay a tax rate of 85%, because they are so smart and so wonderful for re-electing Reid term after term.  No exclusions on income down to $25,000 annually.  That's "fair", right?

I'm from Chicago, left at the end of the '70's, lived in Central America, Mid East, Germany, spent considerable time in various other countries, many states including living in LA & CA.

Got to Kentucky and found home. Prices are cheap, wages are pretty good in comparision to the cost of living, and I like the people. Large international community in my area, mostly European and Asian. I used to dream of retiring to Central America, but now I realize I am much better off here. Almost everyone is armed and Knob Creek range is 15 minutes away, only closed Tuesdays. Annual pass cost me $75 for the whole family. I got relatives driving down from Chicago just to shoot and have fun. Did I mention my area is the Bourbon center of the Universe?

Just stay out of west Louisville. Chicago's far south side I always call it.

5.00 is the new 1.00. I think the calculations are a little off.
