WTF White House Statement Of The Day: Syria Airstrikes Edition

Tyler Durden's picture

When President Obama bragged earlier that "The United States is and will remain the one indispensable nation in the world..." adding that "no other nation can do what we do," we should have guessed some more war-mongering was coming... and sure enough. As AP reports, it appears Syrian airstrikes are on their way, but there's a mind-blowing twist in US foreign policy: "In an effort to avoid unintentionally strengthening the Syrian government, the White House could seek to balance strikes against the Islamic State with attacks on Assad regime targets." In the words of the Guinness commercial, Brilliant.

As AP reports,

The intelligence gathered by U.S. military surveillance flights over Syria could support a broad bombing campaign against the Islamic State militant group, but current and former U.S. officials differ on whether air power would significantly degrade what some have called a "terrorist army."

"Air power needs to be applied like a thunderstorm, not a drizzle," Deptula said, entailing "24-7 overwatch with force application on every move of ISIL personnel."

Further complicating the plans, any military action against Islamic State militants in Syria would also have the effect of putting the U.S. on the same side as Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose ouster the Obama administration has sought for years.

So first Iran and now Syria are best buddies with America?  Well we can't have that...

The U.S. is not cooperating or sharing intelligence with the Assad government, Pentagon and State Department spokesmen said. But the U.S. flights are occurring in eastern Syria, away from most of Syria's air defenses. And experts expressed doubt that Syria would attempt to shoot down American aircraft that are paving the way for a possible bombing campaign against Assad's enemies.

...

In an effort to avoid unintentionally strengthening the Syrian government, the White House could seek to balance strikes against the Islamic State with attacks on Assad regime targets. However, that option is largely unappealing to the president given that it could open the U.S. to the kind of long-term commitment to Syria's stability that Obama has sought to avoid.

*  *  *

So to summarize:

...the limited airstrikes in Iraq (which the Iraqi government did not ask for) now appear to be expanding into '24/7 carpet-bombing' of ISIS targets in Syria (which the US are not asking permission or forgiveness for) and in the interests of "fairness doctrine" America will bomb al-Assad's military installations to maintain some 'balance' between the moderate terrorists, extreme terrorists (and national armies), and scary-as-shit terrorists...

Is there something we missed?

White House spokesman Josh Earnest on Monday tried to tamp down the notion that action against the Islamic State group could bolster Assad, saying, "We're not interested in trying to help the Assad regime." However, he acknowledged that "there are a lot of cross pressures here."

"Cross-pressures" indeed. And all humanitarian.

I'm am being (probably, almost certainly) very forgiving to him.

By the way, all the timelines I mentioned above are neutered if he authorises and chooses airstrikes against Syria in the next few days, weeks, months.

End of the year is the maximum time he has left, airstrikes in Syria indicate he's made his choice, and its the wrong one, and onward to World War 3 we go.

Within weeks of airstrikes in Syria we will see all the following.

Russia >>> Ukraine

North Korea >>> South Korea

China >>> Taiwan

Iran >>> Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia

Perhaps even some cute things like

Hungary >>> Ukraine

India ><><>< Pakistan

Once it is on, it is on.

"The best thing he has done in his Presidency so far is muddle around and prevaricate and eventually allow the voice of the American people via their Congressmen to halt the march to airstrikes in Syria a year ago."

BO never gave a shit about the voice of the American people. The British Parliament shut down the Syria bombing so the US would have gone in solo. Congress cried like a baby saying "Parliament got to vote so why don't we?? waahhhh". Knowing the vote would fail in Congress, BO surrendered to decency and Putin. The surrender to Putin on this issue is a seething rage with Obama, seeking his revenge in Ukraine and still gunning for Syria.

Looks like the S-300 will e put to the test against American planes flown by American Pilots. Previous excuses were always that the planes were not full-spec models and the pilots were not American.

There are no cameras on the tip of the missiles so one could watch Mr American Pie-lot eject, though. It seems Russian weapons manufacturers do not exhibit the same blood lust as its American counterparts.

The CB's must be frothing at the mouth for the nuke to finally go off in a major US city. Absolutely frothing at the mouth. They must be so excited and brimming with anticipation at the gargantuan amount of money now to be made to the downside. All that US pension money can be inistantly transferred into a few wealthy hands. Ideally this nuke will be set off in a place that destroys as much evidence of the malfeacance perpetrated over the last few years.

There is no need to respect people in uniform. This is a trained response to ensure a never ending supply of new recruits. People who join the army and navy are killers, end of fucking story. How many instances since world war II can you cite where military personnel are defending their own soil. The obvious and hugely ironic exception here is Iraq. Their military have been trying to defend the country against US invasion for more than a decade. Afganistan is another notable exception. The mujahideen have been defending their soil against US invasion for how many years?

The fact so many people are willing to enlist and then the fact so many others (especially politicians) idolise and exhalt these assholes is a sad testament to the human race. It also goes to show just how deeply we are conditioned by society to behave in certain ways. Shocking realisation isn't it when Iraqi military and Afghanistan terrorists have a higher moral ground than the US. They have at least taken up arms against an invading force.

If you were to say such things a couple of decades ago you would be run out of town but people are slowly waking up to the extent to which we have all been brain washed to fight banker wars. Same thing with religion, twenty or thirty years ago if you said anything bad about religion we were trained to show deep offence. Fucking fascinating stuff. We're like biological automatons programmed from birth.

The source for the Javelin story would be much appreciated.

Edit. I shouldn't be so lazy...

The Saker, August 25

".. Partisan activities are increasing in frequency and force in the Kharkov and Slavyansk areas to the point Kharkov is building defenses facing Novorossiya. Of particular interest was the capture two weeks ago of an entire Kamaz load of Javelin antitank missiles. These missiles were offloaded from the 'Canadian' air force planes that brought 'non lethal' aid to the Uke army according to eye witnesses. The Javelin is not listed in the TOE (Table of Organization and Equipment) of the armed forces of Canada, although I have few doubts that that oversight will be rectified within minutes of this report being read in The West.

It doesn't matter what the people want or do not want. USA stayed out of Syria on the last episode because the military resisted. It was considered a too risky combination of relative Assad strength and Russian activity. But it was obvious that sooner or later they would find a way to bomb the country, without officially bombing the country, once circumstances become more favorable. Similar to what the Israelis do.

Just like the 'humanitarian' bombing in Nth Iraq to help the yedizi turned into helping the Kurds secure their borders and puts them closer to eventually break away from Iraq.

And now to the other war

I've been watching and reading Ukraine updates and they are very edifiying to say the least.  bullet points.

- Donbass militia is now DPR with formal military units and are beginning to counterattack

_ Cauldrons of Ukies are being squeezed and eliminated one by one and some of the video is pretty gruesome. I mean guts hanging out and burned bodies    in the midst of burned out    tanks.  Vineyard of the Saker gives a good analysis of how and why this is happening.

- Canadian anti tank rocket systems just off the plane that was suppose to be carrying nonlethal aid  captured by DPR

- Mercernaries and contractors from Poland and "the west"  helping Ukranians

- Instances of American contractors at training base for Ukies being taken out by snipers while swimming

- Russian and French volunteers working with DPR

- Some of the units the DPR are fighting against, are the same named SS units with the same unit patches that their fathers and grandfathers fought in the great war.

- Too much to go into, but you won't hear any of it on Western MSM.  The DPR guys giving one of the interviews made the point that it seems that every 30-50 years "the west" has to try and invasion of Russia and the east to impose Western values on them and it always ends the same way...with the fall of Berlin, Paris and other cities.  Right now they are late and slightly behind schedule, but they're starting it again.  DPR soldiers seem in good spirits, motivated and have a good understanding of what they are fighting for.

It would almost be funny if it wasn't sick that the Canadian Javelin missiles got captured by DPR.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FGM-148_Javelin

F Canada-Harper-Bronfman-Cohon-Reichmans.

DPR or the former rebels have been giving the Ukies a chance to surrender or walk away.  If not they will kill them. The Ukies are fighting for an illegal and corrupt junta.

DPR is saying they are fighting mercenaries including Poles and "blacks" on drugs.  I wonder if they are Africans chewing chat like Somalis.  This will enrage the locals.

Clearly they were advised to do this by their CIA/NSA handlers to keep Turkey onside and in NATO.

The Turks need to wake up to themselves and realise they're being used.

The best thing Turkey could do right now is withdraw from NATO in protest at the Syrian strikes and declare neutrality and close the Bosporous.

Does Erdogan have the strength, the leadership or the mettle?

I doubt it, but there is certainly a lot of press about how he is not happy with the Americans. If he is to have any impact as Turkish President he needs to act in the next few days or weeks, or the time will pass.

Erdogan - are you a real leader or merely a cowardly puppet?

The Turks were funneling Libyan weapons into Syria to unseat Assad.  Maybe they wanted a "greater Turkey", a more Turk-friendly Syria regime, who knows?  It's all a quagmire.  The US has no legitimate reason to play puppet master here.  But, it does beg the question.  Who benefits most from an unstable Syria?  My money is on Israel.  The Israelis only have to deal with Palestinians now, and only in the Gaza.  With Syria fighting itself, there won't be any concerted effort by an Arab nation to join in the fight.  Which also begs the question of why ISIS hasn't attacked Israel?

so bomb ISIS and government forces?

and in doing so leave Syrians in total, utter and complete destruction and chaos...

for the love of christ hasn't Washington done enough to these people already? kept this war going even though it has almost no popular support among the majority of the Syrian people.

is this what it was all about this whole time? is this why ISIS ended up with large amounts of American weapons, why they suddenly had the mussel, the money and the organization to launch a campaign of rapid dominance across large parts of Iraq and Syria?

is this who they were secrectly training, arming and funding this whole time? is this the "moderate opposistion" Mccain went to visit...it would make sense cause the FSA sure as hell was not getting shit from uncle sam. are we now seeing exactly who got all the arms, all the money and all the training?

now the picture becomes a little bit clearer, the false flag chemical attack last summer didn't quite get it done. but now we have ISIS which is a threat to the entire planet, we have the new and improved, supersized AL-CIADA which can destroy an American city and they are posting photos showing everybody that they are all ready here.

so we must bomb them, we must destroy them, we must be ruthless and show no mercy on these terrorist for they will show us none. we must get them before they get us...

wherever they may be.

so you see it is Iraq all over again and the Orwellian mind fuck bait and switch  has already been set up.

we are at war with ISIS, we have always been at war with the Assad government.

in two days we went from no chance of involvement in Syria to Washington is considering bombing everything that moves in that country. ISIS was the gateway, the excuse, set loose to exactly this point and purpose, the perfect cover to finally attack Syria.

god help those innocent people in Syria who have already suffered so much over the past three years if those sick, evil satanic psychos in Washington get there way. cause there will be nothing left of Syria if they do...

need any more proof that it is the devil himself who feeds the teleprompter the TOTUS reads from?

attack ISIS in a country where they have no right, no permission and no authority to use weaons of war AND attack the only organized goverment that country has left after 3 years of war...

Syria has not had to worry about air attacks from ISIS but with US planes and drones in the skies it will give Putin a chance to test out some anti-aircraft weapons in Syria. The problem for the US is that they don't have a lot of neutral bases to launch these attacks from. While they have the capability to launch - it won't take long to figure out the routes that the planes/drones/missiles have to take to get in or out of Syria. This will let Syria set up their defenses much more effectively. As soon as the US hits an Assad target all bets are off.

Most of the bombing in the Middle East and elsewhere in recent times by Obama and also other nations (eg: Egypt & UAE jointly bombing Libya, Israel levelling Gaza and the Ukie Poroshenko fascist junta levelling East Ukraine) have never been voted upon or approved by the UN. They probably never would be.

The post WWII consensus that the UN will be the final arbiter of disputes between nations is breaking down. Wise people already knew that it was always going to be like this.

As political elites and their criminal cronies become ever more desperate to remain in power to milk their treasuries, assert their authority and deflect attention away from the economic, social disasters and criminality they have themselves sponsored, the maps of war will expand.

The world is sinking into a collection of small wars which will eventually merge into a collection of bigger wars with everybody fighting everybody else for what's left.

Obama's latest decision to not only bomb ISIS in Syria but also Assad (ie: both sides), is a perfect example of what is emerging.

(Reuters) - Unidentified, heavily-armed strangers with Russian accents have appeared in an eastern Ukrainian village, arousing residents' suspicions despite Moscow's denials that its troops have deliberately infiltrated the frontier.

Two witnesses told Reuters on Tuesday that the dozens of men, who arrived at the weekend and set up a road block, were not local and had military ration packs marked with Russian writing.

While they wore no insignia, their appearance or behavior bore striking similarities to a group of Russian troops detained in Ukraine in the past few days, and to Russian forces which occupied Crimea earlier this year, the witnesses said.

The men had white arm bands, the same identifying mark that was worn by 10 men captured a few kilometers (miles) away by Ukrainian forces and who, in video released on Tuesday, said they were Russian paratroopers.

Actually, the reason the US wants to bomb both ISIS and Assad is that Assad is really fighting the US-backed 'moderate rebels'. Assad knows his army is not strong enough to take on ISIS so he is negotiating with ISIS and is willing to give ISIS parts of Syria for their Caliphate and he has negotiated oil deals with ISIS too. In other words - things are too Peaceful between Assad and ISIS!

Thus the moderate rebels really are fighting both Assad and ISIS - and in Obama's mind this makes both legitimate targets.
