Don't have a to be an economist to realize that a nation can't go on importing products without giving something back in return. Hardly anybody in Canada produces anything. People in Canada, citizens and immigrants alike do little more than consume products manufactured outside Canada. A succession of Canadian governments ignored a 14% wholesale tax until the early '80s that stifled Canadian exports. Meanwhile, Canadian judiciary handed out wage increases to trade unions that further stifled competitiveness.
To give the Canadian dollar value to buy products from outside Canada residents at first relied upon export of natural resources. As manufacturing for exports declined natural resource exports weren't enough to support the current residents of Canada in a manner in which they were accustomed. Especially after being primed with wage increases by a judiciary so obsessed with what they thought was fair remuneration, to either ignore or not care about the damage that was being done to Canadian exports. And eventually to the local Canadian market itself because imports were less expensive. Real estate sales to wealthy newcomers brought back the Canadian dollars that were spent on imported products, thus the ponzi in the Canadian economy was born.
