NATO Releases Satellite Imagery "Proof" That Russia Has Invaded Ukraine
NATO released new satellite images on Thursday, 28 August 2014, that show Russian combat forces engaged in military operations inside the sovereign territory of Ukraine. The images, captured in late August, depict Russian self-propelled artillery units moving in a convoy through the Ukrainian countryside and then preparing for action by establishing firing positions in the area of Krasnodon, Ukraine. Russia's response - "reports on Russian troops in Ukraine are false."
The source of the images is an independent firm named Digital Globe. The images have not been altered or changed by NATO. Additional information has been added to identify locations, dates and equipment. DigitalGlobe images can be independently verified: http://www.digitalglobe.com

Image 1 shows Russian military units moving in a convoy formation with self-propelled artillery in the area of Krasnodon, Ukraine, well inside territory controlled by Russian separatists. The image was captured on 21 August 2014. There is confidence the equipment is Russian, since Ukrainian units have not yet penetrated this far into separatist controlled territory.
Image 2 shows Russian self-propelled artillery units set up in firing positions near Krasnodon, Ukraine. They are supported by logistical vehicles which are likely carrying extra ammunition and supplies. This configuration is exactly how trained military professionals would arrange their assets on the ground, indicating that these are not unskilled amateurs, but Russian soldiers. Russian artillery systems like these have recently shelled Ukrainian positions outside the city of Luhansk in conjunction with a separatist counteroffensive to attempt to break the Ukrainian siege of the city.
Image 3 includes two pictures (left and right) and shows a military deployment site on the Russian side of the border, near Rostov-on-Don. This location is approximately 31 miles or 50 kilometres from the Dovzhansky, Ukraine border crossing.
The image on the left was captured on 19 June 2014 and shows the area to be mostly empty at this time. The image on the right was taken two months later on 20 August 2014 and shows the same location. Russian main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers, cargo trucks and tented accommodations can all be clearly seen. This is one example of the multiple encampments that Russia has positioned near its border with Eastern Ukraine. Many of these forces are deployed within a few kilometers of Ukraine, and are capable of attacking with little warning, and could potentially overwhelm and push-back Ukrainian units. Russia has also moved significant numbers of combat aircraft and helicopters to airfields along the border. Russian unmanned aircraft routinely cross into Ukrainian airspace.
Some equipment from these locations is moved across the border and is used to resupply and equip separatist forces operating in Ukraine. For months, Russia has provided separatist fighters with heavy equipment in the form of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and multiple rocket launchers. Air defense systems have also been provided to separatists, even following the downing of Malaysian airlines flight MH17.
Image 4, captured on 23 July 2014, depicts what are probably six Russian 153mm 2S19 self-propelled guns located in Russia near Kuybyshevo. This site is situated 4 miles, or 6.5 kilometres, south of the Ukraine border, near the village of Chervonyi Zhovten. The guns are pointed north, directly towards Ukrainian territory (see North indicator on image). See image 5 for an overview of where these guns are situated in relation to Ukrainian territory.
Image 5 shows a wider overview including the position of the self-propelled guns from image 4. Note the North indicator on this image, and remember that the guns are orientated in this location. It is clear that from this location, it would be impossible NOT to fire into Ukrainian territory. This is clearly NOT an exercise; these guns are being used to support separatist forces operating in the territory of Ukraine.

What you say would make sense...if only those who came in here during the occupation would integrate, learn our language and history. However that is not the case. Why is that if Russia asks people to learn its language and history to become a citizen its OK. Latvia got like 26% Russian population and there are 13.5% non-citizens(pretty much all of them Russians), 40-50% of Russians living in Latvia still refuse to accept independent Latvia.

Russian is not the only language spoken in Russia. Karelia is the only republic of Russia with Russian as the only official language. 27 different languages are considered official languages in various regions of Russia, along with Russian. Russian troops were always in Crimea, the issue was were they off base. And yes, they almost certainly were - again, likely because a NATO move into Crimea was very likely.
So congrats - yes, Russia hasn't always been fully honest. But it is acting it its own vital strategic and economic interests and, in fact, is largely acting in areas where people are ethnic Russian.

a "memorandum" is not a treaty, much less an "ironclad" treaty.

There were Russian soldiers in Crimea for 50 some years. Putin merely was saying that they had not sent in additional Russian soldiers, and at the time, he was correct. I think later on they sent some, but under their agreement with Ukraine, there is an amount they are allowed to have there, and I am pretty sure they did not exceed it (in that I doubt Putin is particularly interested in being immediately bombed by the US).

Learn to judge situations separately. Crimea had every right under their constitution to call in Russian troops, which they did. Actually, under Organic/Natural Law and the West's application of International Law, so does Donetsk and Lugansk. Not that this necessarily means anything, but Digital Globe was founded by a guy named Walter Scott, who used to work at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and was in charge of several projects related to the Strategic Defense Initiative (the "Star Wars" program).
So when we read "The source of the images is an independent firm named Digital Globe," perhaps we should take that with a grain of salt.

The number of Ukrainian refugees in Russia has nearly reached 1 million, Russia’s top diplomat said Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said at the Seliger-2014 all-Russian youth forum in the Tver Region northwest of Moscow that Ukrainian refugees should be given the right to live where they want.
“The situation of people who fled Ukraine’s southeast to other regions of the country is very difficult. Ukraine has no laws on internally displaced persons; that is why they do not obtain documents confirming their status, and if there are no documents they cannot get a job, obtain loans and sustenance,” Lavrov said.
“It is necessary to push for people to be able to reside where they want to,” he said.
The minister cited UN data in line with which more than 22,000 people left Donetsk and Lugansk last week, adding that refugees are afraid to use the so-called humanitarian corridors provided by Kiev as they are unsafe.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday citing the latest statistics released by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) that the number of fatalities from the armed standoff in the embattled east of Ukraine has reached 2,249 and added that another 6,033 were injured as of August 19.
Troops loyal to Kiev and local militias in the southeastern Ukrainian Donetsk and Lugansk regions are involved in fierce clashes as the Ukrainian armed forces are conducting a military operation to regain control over the breakaway territories, which on May 11 proclaimed their independence at local referendums and now call themselves the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s republics.
During the military operation, conducted since mid-April, Kiev has used armored vehicles, heavy artillery and attack aviation. Hundreds of civilians have been killed in it. Many buildings have been destroyed and hundreds of thousands of people have had to flee Ukraine’s embattled southeast.

I thought Latvia was in Ireland, cos the place has been full of them since about 2004. Interesting thing is Prof Michael Hudson UMKC reckons that since Latvia was admitted to the EU, they crushed their own economy such as it was to align it with EU, as a result of which they enjoyed massive emigration of the most productive and educated. If the Russian Army had taken the field, the war would have been over a very long time ago.
To give some perspective, we should remember that Russia flattened the better armed and much more competent Georgian army in three days. In the Georgian war, the entire Russian force had to slowly funnel into Georgia through the narrow Roki tunnel, only being able to deploy one battalion at a time into the fight. The Russians showed remarkable restraint by deliberately holding their positions within striking distance of Tbilisi. They did not advance on it or destroy it.
That, is truly knowing how to win and accept victory.
They did not have to destroy Tbilisi and hang the stooge (and now distinguished professor and resident of the USA) Mikheil Saakashvili by his balls. Russia had achieved their objectives and made their point, in a crystal clear fashion.
There are no such "Roki Tunnel" constraints in Ukraine. There are wide open borders and there are two large bodies of water that Russia controls and can use for naval bombardment of practically any place in Ukraine. Russia could roll five entire divisions simultaneously into Ukraine if they wanted to.

I suppose what NATO is saying could be true. I also suppose there is no way I can tell the actual geolocations of the images, the identities of any of the people in or operating the equipment, the loyalties or motives of these people, or the times they were supposedly taken. One thing I know for sure is that there is a great deal of propaganda surrounding the Ukraine situation. Therefore I have a hard believing anything even if NATO says it. I do believe the US was behind the coup in Ukraine, and Russia is pissed off.
