NATO Releases Satellite Imagery "Proof" That Russia Has Invaded Ukraine
NATO released new satellite images on Thursday, 28 August 2014, that show Russian combat forces engaged in military operations inside the sovereign territory of Ukraine. The images, captured in late August, depict Russian self-propelled artillery units moving in a convoy through the Ukrainian countryside and then preparing for action by establishing firing positions in the area of Krasnodon, Ukraine. Russia's response - "reports on Russian troops in Ukraine are false."
The source of the images is an independent firm named Digital Globe. The images have not been altered or changed by NATO. Additional information has been added to identify locations, dates and equipment. DigitalGlobe images can be independently verified: http://www.digitalglobe.com

Image 1 shows Russian military units moving in a convoy formation with self-propelled artillery in the area of Krasnodon, Ukraine, well inside territory controlled by Russian separatists. The image was captured on 21 August 2014. There is confidence the equipment is Russian, since Ukrainian units have not yet penetrated this far into separatist controlled territory.
Image 2 shows Russian self-propelled artillery units set up in firing positions near Krasnodon, Ukraine. They are supported by logistical vehicles which are likely carrying extra ammunition and supplies. This configuration is exactly how trained military professionals would arrange their assets on the ground, indicating that these are not unskilled amateurs, but Russian soldiers. Russian artillery systems like these have recently shelled Ukrainian positions outside the city of Luhansk in conjunction with a separatist counteroffensive to attempt to break the Ukrainian siege of the city.
Image 3 includes two pictures (left and right) and shows a military deployment site on the Russian side of the border, near Rostov-on-Don. This location is approximately 31 miles or 50 kilometres from the Dovzhansky, Ukraine border crossing.
The image on the left was captured on 19 June 2014 and shows the area to be mostly empty at this time. The image on the right was taken two months later on 20 August 2014 and shows the same location. Russian main battle tanks, armored personnel carriers, cargo trucks and tented accommodations can all be clearly seen. This is one example of the multiple encampments that Russia has positioned near its border with Eastern Ukraine. Many of these forces are deployed within a few kilometers of Ukraine, and are capable of attacking with little warning, and could potentially overwhelm and push-back Ukrainian units. Russia has also moved significant numbers of combat aircraft and helicopters to airfields along the border. Russian unmanned aircraft routinely cross into Ukrainian airspace.
Some equipment from these locations is moved across the border and is used to resupply and equip separatist forces operating in Ukraine. For months, Russia has provided separatist fighters with heavy equipment in the form of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and multiple rocket launchers. Air defense systems have also been provided to separatists, even following the downing of Malaysian airlines flight MH17.
Image 4, captured on 23 July 2014, depicts what are probably six Russian 153mm 2S19 self-propelled guns located in Russia near Kuybyshevo. This site is situated 4 miles, or 6.5 kilometres, south of the Ukraine border, near the village of Chervonyi Zhovten. The guns are pointed north, directly towards Ukrainian territory (see North indicator on image). See image 5 for an overview of where these guns are situated in relation to Ukrainian territory.
Image 5 shows a wider overview including the position of the self-propelled guns from image 4. Note the North indicator on this image, and remember that the guns are orientated in this location. It is clear that from this location, it would be impossible NOT to fire into Ukrainian territory. This is clearly NOT an exercise; these guns are being used to support separatist forces operating in the territory of Ukraine.

Of course they are trained military professionals. The Novorussia resistance fighters are all volunteers from Ukraine's Eastern military forces, either veterans or defectors from the regular Ukraine military. So are the foreign volunteers that have joined them: the French volunteers, for instance, said they were veterans of the French armed forces. So no, none of these men are "unskilled amateurs". Anyone can join in, but you want to be a trained soldier. Better for your health.

These are poor quality commercial images. The only one (the last) with location co-ords is of Russian kit inside Russia - big deal. The first that 'claims' to be inside Ukraine is not locatable. Why are no co-ords or location details given? Perhaps they are Kiev vehicles. No way to tell whose they are or where they are located. When I did NATO Mil Air Recon every print we made had co-ordinates! These photos could be of anything, anyone, anywhere. Lets have some Mil intel NATO - put up or shut-up!

Even if there are Russian troops on the ground in the Uke to bring down an illegitimate government and secure its borders, what's the problem with that? Once the EU has Russia locked into the Ukraine, they can start the divide and conquer routine. Not all of the Russian oligarchs are behind Putin's Ukrainian play. The people of Russia do not want to fight for the Crimea or a part of Ukraine.
Also, this becomes fertile ground to plant the infrastructure for a politically and fiscally integrated Europe.

The obvious accommodation is for Putin to allow NATO to enforce their positions along the Russian border in exchange for a relaxation of trade relations with Europe.
All you need to do is watch the value of the Russian currency, and the capital flows into or out of Russia.
The problems with your arguments are that you assume normal capitalist relations between Russia and Europe. Given that the crisis in the Ukraine is a national security issue for Russia, the usual rules will not apply. Were Nat gas supplies to the EU disrupted due to war, the crisis would end very quickly in Russia's favor.

No it doesn't, it speaks to your unfamiliarity with interpreting sattelite images. That photo is taken from an oblique angle. If you turn it so that north is up, all the vehicles will appear to be driving upside down. It's pretty standard way to do it, it makes interpreting photos easier.
And why are they Russian units and not Rebel? In fact, this type of gun was captured in some number in battles. Also, a nice youtube video exists and I watched several days ago, maybe a week, showing this exact unit moving across fields in preparation for battle. The fighters shown with this SP Artillery convoy were to all appearance rebels. But who can prove by dress and speech.
My take, THIS is not a proof, these images just show a rebels convoy of heavy SP guns. I might note, A Polish super heavy SP gun was ambushed over a week ago near Karkov moving towards the Donetsk battle front, a super heavy gun ideal for city pounding. A rebel Partisan unit ambushed this gun and it's crew driving in two vehicles with the gun. Two Poles were killed in the one car, the other car escaped with bullet holes at high speed. Rebels captured this Polish SP Gun, and photgraphed serial numbers and other proofs of Polish origin, plus they had two dead Poles. The gun was photgraphed, I am sure a serach will pull it up. Many Poles have been killed in battle. SO, has Poland invaded Ukraine?
My real take, the Rebels are smashing the US backed Kiev army. The situation is desperate. NATO MUST FIND a reason to move into Ukraine and save Kiev and it's many encricled Battalions. I can't push the issue too much that Kiev's army is totally fucked, two Fascist Battlions of right sector volunteers have actually deserted the battle field, as of yesterday, and have said they may march on Kiev. Kiev admitted this and reeased a press statement saying they are investigating the Units and actions will be taken.
Again, NATO and Kiev have lost their gamble to defeat East Ukraine. Of course Russia is helping rebels and has volunteer Russians mixed into Rebel units, everyone knows this, just as Kiev has Poles and other east Europeans fighting. Of course many heavy weapons the rebels have come from Russia. BUT, many of Kiev's heavy weapons now come from Poland and even Germany, these are left over Warsaw pact weapons that are battle ready but in storage across Eastern Europe. Hungary just shipped an entire train load of battle tanks and several attack helicopters. Kiev has lost so much equipment that the Shipments from US allies in NATO are all that keeps them fighting. Let me say again. Even Germany is sending former East German heavy weapons to Kiev.
NATO is pissing it's pants over Kiev defeats. Excuses to attack the rebels with NATO forces is what Washington is all about. As for a direct Russian invasion force of regular army fighting in Ukraine. Bullshit Lies. They have no reason to, when rebels forces are smashing the Junta Army of Kiev into bits.

We've been told over and over that our satellites can read a license plate in a WalMart parking lot. The resolution of these images is far from license plate quality. It's not even up to VW bus quality. How come?

Indeed! I google earth the house I stay in when in London. I can actually see the flowers on the rose bushes out front. Count the window panes of the bedroom windows. See flower pots on the steps. See a rear view mirror on a car. Then they release these fucking joke pictures in the year 2014, and claim proof of a Russian invasion. They think it is still 1955 for fuck's sake. Who in the fuck buys into these liar's bullshit.
By the way, Google images aren't at their actual resolution. I have a programmer friend working there. The originals are much more detailed, but there is a regulation that states how accurate the pictures are allowed to be and what they can or cannot show. I think he mentioned data coming off satellites being about 8x denser with the currently available optic sensors.
All this NATO imagegy is total bull! Google does photographs. Military is few generatons above them in terms of capacity. They do spectral scans, infrared for night time and heat detection, radiation tracking for warhead spotting and so on. Their photos have high dynamic range and spectral depth you can scrub through until you see exactly what you need. They don't have astronauts hanging from the ISS with disposable 35mm cameras, as that's how it seems these images were taken.
Eh, because they are not "our" satellites. (Assuming by "our" you mean the NRO) The satellite images are provided from a commercial satellite imaging company. Depending on which of the company's satellites took the images, the resolution is 30cm +/-. Military satellites operated by the NRO have resolutions roughly half (or double depending on how you think about it) that of commercial satellites. The Lacrosse SAR satellites are roughly half again better.
In instances where the US does release spy satellite images, they are always degraded to disguise the source resolution.
The whole read license plate thing was always a bit of a myth.
