Obama: "We Don't Have A Strategy Yet"

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: Damage Control Spin begins...

World Cloud of Josh Earnest's brief interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer after Obama press conference... ("strategy" used 33 times!)

President Obama 'knows' how to handle Putin's 'continuation' (not 'invasion') - more sanctions (and costs for Europe) - but when it comes to beating the most "barbaric" terrorists known as ISIS, ISIL, or The Islamic State; he had this to offer... "I don't want to put the cart before the horse. We don't have a strategy yet." Rest assured Americans - who have been told that ISIS could be crossing the borders every day and a constant threat, President Obama is 'working on it'. Perhaps most crucially, while we 'joke' that the administration has no strategy, it is noteworthy that Obama stated it was "not US policy to defeat ISIS, only reverse gains."

QUESTION: Do you need Congress's approval to go into Syria?

OBAMA: You know, I have consulted with Congress throughout this process. I am confident that as commander in chief I have the authorities to engage in the acts that we are conducting currently. As our strategy develops, we will continue to consult with Congress, and I do think that it'll be important for Congress to weigh in and we're -- that our consultations with Congress continue to develop so that the American people are part of the debate.

But I don't want to put the cart before the horse. We don't have a strategy yet.

I think what I've seen in some of the news reports suggests that folks are getting a little further ahead of where we're at than we currently are. And I think that's not just my assessment, but the assessment of our military, as well. We need to make sure that we've got clear plans, that we're developing them. At that point, I will consult with Congress and make sure that their voices are heard.

But there's no point in me asking for action on the part of Congress before I know exactly what it is that is going to be required for us to get the job done.

Maybe instead of golfing around Martha's Vineyard, he could have been working on "strategy"?

*  *  *

But perhaps more crucially...

...my priority at this point is to make sure that the gains that ISIL made in Iraq are rolled back and that Iraq has the opportunity to govern itself effectively and secure itself.

*  *  *

"Do nothing stupid" like admit you don't have a strategy?

*  *  *

And this wins the internet today...

* * *

Of course - to be serious for a moment - as long as Qatar has a strategy on how to progress on its Gazprom-bypassing pipeline to Europe, whether Obama had a strategy or not, is completely irrelevant.

Oh, man... this is harder than 18 holes on a hot day, or organizing shithole neighborhoods in a shithole city, or pretending to have actually read the Constitution.

They said I'd get a huge fancy house with guards and servants and lots of free food, but nobody said I'd have to actually think stuff up.

Motherfucker.

When was the last time the U.S. ever let little things like lack of a strategy and objective hold them back?

maybe there is a strategy that requires a US population sufficiently scared enough of the IS-BOOGYMAN but overheard at water coolers and seen in comments sections is just the opposite.

There is a strategy, but it requires support of the public to openly re-instate major combat actions. but instead there is a sufficient number of the US (and world) population calling bullshit on the whole terror thing to begin with let alone "ISIS"..

Back to Work Barry.  Come back with Alien (E.T.s, not the border jumping kind) Invasion at least if you want the backing of the US Public for any aggressive action beyond lancing a boil on your ass.

We need a massive tax increase - to build out the police state and to build some new state-of-the-art government raping centers.  if we can just give the federal reserve more authority and power - and provide the bankers with more capital and credit - then maybe there can be a new explosion of financial crime that can help the economy achiece 'escape veolocity.'  And - while were at it - if we can build hundreds of millions of new prisons all across the globe - then maybe we can just lock up al the "unemployed" and - shazam - worker strife elimated. PLUS, think of all the new prison jobs.

Someone obviously has a strategy.  Exhibit A -- the hundreds of articles in the MSM which all say the same thing in a hundred different ways.  Only a small sampling of the prostitute MSM’s frantic clarion call to arms against Russia and Putin.  So TPTB and U.S. government can send the facist dictator Poroshenko billions of dollars more in military equipment and aid.  Paid for by guess who?  You and me of course -- Johnny Q. Taxpayer.  Which may be just great if you’re a blood sucking, no conscience motherfucker, and shareholder of say The Carlyle Group.

And where is Saudi Arabia's Strategy with dealing with ISIL/S/IS 10 years from now, when they (IS) migrates south through-out the delta/ Kuwait ? The strategy is going to be a resurgence of the desert shield coalition in southern Iraq. Somewhere a Base of operations is going to be needed, or else the IS movement will, otherwise, go unabated.

@Josh Earnest

It is okay to not have a concrete strategy dealing with a fluid situation. It is, however, not ok to have an ill timed press conference confessing about it.

It is naive to believe they do not have any game plan or strategy.

It is even more naive to believe the "plan" they will advertise for public acceptance

(e.g. humanitarianism, democracy, rule of law, stability, etc.) will  be the deciding

motive or goal.

The only thing "fluid" is which psy-op spin the polls will find best works the crowd.

They certainly do not want to publicize the ignoble plans they have

If Obama "does not want to" destroy,
annihilate, totally obliterate ISIS,
he is an infinitely stupider fool than
everyone now realizes he is.

In al-Sisi's approach to the Muslim
Brotherhood, he has taken
the only approach that has
any rational possibility of
being effective against this level
of organized and well funded
terrorist----total obliteration
and ruthless wiping out
of every remaining trace.

Such terrorist organizations
are cancers on the face of
the earth--if they are not
totally extirpated, including
removing even the smallest
vestige, remission is inevitable

the next best thing he can do that

" We dont have a strategy yet."

Question 1 : Who are WE ?

Question 2: If WE is what I think then why do people think the Israelis are smart ?

Question 3: What is the goal of the to be decided strategy ?  Let me guess, to be able to destroy Syria , Iran and ISIS , in that order. So the strategy is simple. Pretend to hit ISIS while flying over Syria and bomb them silly. Then delare the ISIS has now retreated to Iran and repeat the bombing of the ISIS in Iran only this time bomb both of them.

Declare victory.

Saw the Nobel peace winner briefly on TV as I walked past a TV shop. A thought came to mind -- this poor excuse of a president is the manifestation of the collective stupidity of the American people who voted for him TWICE. The only problem, I suffer along even though I never voted for him and actually warned others about him the first time around when eveyone is having an orgasm about him.

Obama's making sense for a change. Yes, he can!

Best thing u.s. can do is to stay out of it as much as possible. Their involvement will only validate IS and ensure their status as the new alqaeda for jihadis to flock to...even more than already the case now.

There's no endgame in defeating IS, they'll just disintegrate for a while and reform as a new group with a new brand.

If the news often seems skewed lately note this possible reason. For decades a so-called anti-propaganda law prevented the U.S. government's mammoth broadcasting arm from delivering programming to American audiences. But on July 2, 2013 that taboo came silently to an end with the implementation of a new law passed in January. This unleashes thousands of hours per week of government-funded radio and TV programs for domestic U.S. consumption. This "reform" was criticized by many human rights activist as a green light for U.S. domestic propaganda efforts. More on this subject in the article below.

The saying "if you break it you buy it" can be misleading. It is often unenforceable, in some cases it is not even practical. In the case of foreign policy, accepting such a notion can cause America to be far less likely to step in where needed, or cause us to undertake the costly and unrealistic job of nation building.  In real life such rules often do not hold true, in fact the real Pottery Barn has no such rule.

In fact Pottery Barn is a bit weary of being associated with the remark that is often quoted and attributed to them in newspaper and television reports. "This is very, very far from a policy of ours," said Leigh Oshirak, public relations director for the brand, owned by Williams-Sonoma Inc. of San Francisco. "In the rare instance that something is broken in the store, it's written off as a loss." More on this subject in the article below.

"AdvancingTime"

I'll re-post my reply to your re-posted comment

down arrowed you for
"such a notion can cause America to be far less likely to step in where needed"

A NEW AXIOM FOR EMPIRE
borrowed from the knick-knack shop
and now applied to nations and peoples.
from "spreading democracy"
to "you break it, you own it".
How convenient,
all one has to do, under any pretext,
is invade, bomb, and otherwise destroy
whatever catches one's eye,
and presto!
One owns it !
"It" meaning a nation and its inhabitants, who are now all just another "it".
And by owning, we mean that "it" is our property, each and every "it",
to do with it whatever we want.
We will treat it kindly, the oil and minerals that is.
We may even privatize (over to us) what we like,
to take special long-term care of what we did not break.
The people, well, that's different.
By invading and causing ruin, "we gave them a chance"
So says our esteemed president, a Nobel prize winner, no less.
Thus, when we don't like what "it" became with that "chance",
why that's all the more right to bomb it over again, and again.
After all, we broke them, we own them.
Or so the mantra of empire informs us.
