Kick Russia Out Of SWIFT, UK Demands

Tyler Durden's picture

UK Prime Minister David Cameron came out swinging this morning; not only at ISIS but in calling for European leaders to block Russia from the SWIFT banking transaction system. European leaders have already (via unnamed sources) denied any actual new sanctions will take place (though they will be discussing them at the NATO Summit) but - as we have noted previously - this is yet another unintended consequence-driven nail in the coffin of USD hegemony...

Bloomberg reports that the U.K. Said to Press EU to Block Russia From Banking Network

The U.K. will press European Union leaders to consider blocking Russian access to the SWIFT banking transaction system under an expansion of sanctions over the conflict in Ukraine, a British government official said.

The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, known as SWIFT, is one of Russia's main connections to the international financial system. Prime Minister David Cameron's government plans to put the topic on the agenda for a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels Aug. 30, according to the official, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private.

This has consequences...

“Blocking Russia from the SWIFT system would be a very serious escalation in sanctions against Russia and would most certainly result in equally tough retaliatory actions by Russia,” said Chris Weafer, a senior partner at Moscow-based consulting firm Macro Advisory. “An exclusion from SWIFT would not block major trade deals but would cause problems in cross-border banking and that would disrupt trade flows.”

But then we already knew that...

1) Russia is likely looking to move away from the NSA-sponsored SWIFT system's total transparency to Western powers...

But while collecting credit card data was to be expected, what is even worse is that the NSA has also secretly planted itself in the nexus of the entire global USD-intermediated financial transactions system courtesy of SWIFT.

The NSA's Tracfin data bank also contained data from the Brussels-based Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), a network used by thousands of banks to send transaction information securely. SWIFT was named as a "target," according to the documents, which also show that the NSA spied on the organization on several levels, involving, among others, the agency's "tailored access operations" division. One of the ways the agency accessed the data included reading "SWIFT printer traffic from numerous banks," the documents show.

What is curious is that while the NSA and its henchmen, in this case the GCHQ, had no qualms about violating personal privacy at every level, it is only when banks were threatened that someone feel like perhaps a line was crossed:

But even intelligence agency employees are somewhat concerned about spying on the world finance system, according to one document from the UK's intelligence agency GCHQ concerning the legal perspectives on "financial data" and the agency's own cooperations with the NSA in this area.

In other words, America's unsupervised uber spies, when not checking in on their former significant others, spend the bulk of their time tracking who is buying what, where, and with whose money.

2) Russia is planning its own (possibly BRICS-based) payment system...

Faced with the risk of losing access to the network, Russia’s government has already drafted a bill to create a new Russian system for domestic bank transfers, Deputy Finance Minister Alexey Moiseev said on Aug. 27, according to the Itar-Tass news service.

SWIFT transmitted more than 21 million financial messages a day last month, facilitating payments between more than 10,500 financial institutions and corporations in 215 countries, the organization said on its website.

“There’s no doubt that in the short term restricting Russian usage of SWIFT would be extremely disruptive to Russian financial and commercial activities,” said Richard Reid, a research fellow for finance and regulation at the University of Dundee in Scotland. “However, it may carry a longer-term downside, namely the likelihood that large chunks of Russian international payments flows would move to much less well monitored and measured financial channels and thus be beyond sanctions at any future point.”

and 3) Russia (and China) have begun the de-dollarization...

Several months ago, when Russia announced the much anticipated "Holy Grail" energy deal with China, some were disappointed that despite this symbolic agreement meant to break the petrodollar's stranglehold on the rest of the world, neither Russia nor China announced payment terms to be in anything but dollars. In doing so they admitted that while both nations are eager to move away from a US Dollar reserve currency, neither is yet able to provide an alternative.

This changed in late June when first Gazprom's CFO announced the gas giant was ready to settle China contracts in Yuan or Rubles, and at the same time the People's Bank of China announced that its Assistant Governor Jin Qi and Russian central bank Deputy Chairman Dmitry Skobelkin held a meeting in which they discussed cooperating on project and trade financing using local currencies. The meeting discussed cooperation in bank card, insurance and financial supervision sectors.

And yet, while both sides declared their operational readiness and eagerness to bypass the dollar entirely, such plans remained purely in the arena of monetary foreplay and the long awaited first shot across the Petrodollar bow was absent.

Until now.

According to Russia's RIA Novosti, citing business daily Kommersant, Gazprom Neft has agreed to export 80,000 tons of oil from Novoportovskoye field in the Arctic; it will accept payment in rubles, and will also deliver oil via the Eastern Siberia-Pacific Ocean pipeline (ESPO), accepting payment in Chinese yuan for the transfers.

*  *  *
As we concluded previously, these short-term 'punishments' borne of ego and bluster merely further 'isolate' the status quo from the inevitable transition...

Still confused? Then read "90% Of Gazprom Clients Have "De-Dollarized", Will Transact In Euro & Renminbi" for just how Gazprom set the stage for the day it finally would push the button to skip the dollar entirely. Which it just did.

In conclusion we will merely say what we have said previously, and it touches on what will be the most remarkable aspect of Obama's legacy, because while the hypocrite "progressive" president who even his own people have accused of being a "brown-faced Clinton" after selling out to Wall Street and totally wrecking US foreign policy abroad, is already the worst president in a century of US history according to public polls, the fitting epitaph will come when the president's policies put an end to dollar hegemony and end the reserve currency status of the dollar once and for all, thereby starting the rapid, and uncontrolled, collapse of the US empire. To wit:

In retrospect it will be very fitting that the crowning legacy of Obama's disastrous reign, both domestically and certainly internationally, will be to force the world's key ascendent superpowers (we certainly don't envision broke, insolvent Europe among them) to drop the Petrodollar and end the reserve status of the US currency.

And once China and Russia show that not only can it be done but thanks to US prodding it has been done, expect other countries to promptly follow the anti-SWIFT axis on their own...

*  *  *

Isolation... indeed.

So here is the $64 million question.  Dave Cameron is Red Shield and his tribe family has worked for them financing wars for 200 + years.  Cameron is apoplectic over Putin and Russia.   He goes mental over Putin.

So is Putin, Russia and China beyond the grasp of the Red Shield?  Or is it all theater?

This IS about GBP's desperate measures to stay viable in International Finance.

IMHO, tides are a'changing; and People the World Over are equating(or desire the close proximity of) Money/High Finance and Oil/NatGas/Gold/Silver with possibly hard-covertible commodities as an addition going forward.

GBR and its GBP are instruments of extreme Bloat.  The only thing that's propping up the Economy is their Oil/Gas Ventures (won over by bombing and shooting natives, inflated Real Estate Market, and its related Finance Schemes.

49 Up votes?

And nobody is willing to call him on it yet?

Well I don't cast down votes. So I will.

It is their idea because they are frauds that all represent the globalists but are acting as the sovereign states or heads of sovereign states like the US or Russia. They purposely are causing the implosion because that's what they want to happen.

So doing this to the detriment of the west or the east or Russia or the US doesn't actually matter. It is all about something. It has been proposed that it is just for a one world order. It may be. But I'm still not convinced that is it or solely it.

However, it definitely is all about certain actors and groups jockeying for power and position in whatever is going on, while maintaining the illusion of independent sovereign nations, freedoms, Constitutions etc. for the masses.

In reality there is no US vs. BRICS. There isn't really even good vs evil. It is all evil and factions within evil jockeying within it. At least I don't see any outwardly visible group showing any degree of influence that someone might consider good. And you, me and everyone up into the highest levels are along for the ride.

Some people want to know or figure out every detail of what's going on no matter what level they are at. Others are happy partying, being oblivious and don't give a shit. The more you know or the higher up you go the further and possibly more visibly you may fall. Like off the 33rd floor of a building after texting your girlfriend you're on your way home.

A little history.  Thatcher was against Open Borders.  The Labour Party ran campaign ads against her for that reason.   Blair and Broon were for wide open borders for the NWO like Obama.

Today the most popular boy's name in England is Mohammed.  The Labour Party-Left also pushes PC and using the marxist racism smear.  So thousands of Enlgish children get raped by Muslim gangs in England but the police do nothing because of the fear of racism.

Thatcher was not perfect but the Labour Party is pure evil.

Oh and Broon sold off all of England's gold at the absolute low.  The UK also got gun control under Tony Blair after Dunblane where the Dunblane shooter supposedly had a .22 and killed many children.

Racism is BS. The Police in South Yorkshire are CORRUPT. It was not Racism at Hillsborough. It is the same in West Yorkshire. Corrupt policing run through ACPO the private company that runs the Chiefs of Police and pays them secret bonuses.

They choose which laws to enforce and ignore others like Fraud. They are there to control people not protect, it is top-down policing ever since Thatcher used them to infiltrate unions and engage in heavy duty policing.

They have orders to prepare for civil disorder and tool up, they have MI5 liaison ready to lock down major cities when trouble starts. They let Muslim gangs rape so they can find informants and keep track, it is all about MI5 not local people

read between the lines

The contemporary quest for world order will require a coherent strategy to establish a concept of order within the various regions and to relate these regional orders to one another. These goals are not necessarily self-reconciling: The triumph of a radical movement might bring order to one region while setting the stage for turmoil in and with all others. The domination of a region by one country militarily, even if it brings the appearance of order, could produce a crisis for the rest of the world.

A world order of states affirming individual dignity and participatory governance, and cooperating internationally in accordance with agreed-upon rules, can be our hope and should be our inspiration. But progress toward it will need to be sustained through a series of intermediary stages.

....

The celebration of universal principles needs to be paired with recognition of the reality of other regions' histories, cultures and views of their security.

This is a good move on Britain's part.  Kicking Russia out of SWIFT will cause significant side effects for China.  The mercantile nature of Russia does not sync with the mercantile nature of China.  Whats good for the goose is not good for the gander.

China needs export markets and a bouyant global economy.  If Russia rocks the boat over a small chunk of Ukraine, global harmony is disrupted.  Putin laughs about it but the Chinese feel the pain.  Pro-Putin backers joyfully talk about the pain inflicted on Germany.  Why isn't anyone talking about the economic pain inflicted on China?

In times of global unrest, you expect oil prices to spike.  When the world goes into recession, you expect exports to drop and oil prices to drop.  Let's move things forward.

It is expected Putin will be an ass and that result will be a rise in the price of oil.  Putin will stupidly play at being the big man.  He is prepared to go all in.

Chinese exports will drop and domestic pressures will build.  Why is the Chinese leadership supporting Putin?  If things get serious, China will be offered a deal over the segmentation of the Russian economy.  Either the Russians will offer the Chinese the deal because they need the money (or Chinese support), or the West will offer the Chinese the same deal in the neo-Russia governed under new leadership.

China will need "face" to keep exporting into the global markets.  If they cannot ensure that Putin will not overplay his hand, the Chinese will side with the West economic regions.  Cameron is offering Russia to China on a platter.  The Chinese know this.  So does the smart money.

Putin has no chance at winning anything here.  He has seriously misplayed his hand.

Now, wrt to Putin's popularity over the land grab:

- Germans were extatic when Hitler annexed Austria. Did that help them?

- Soviet party enjoyed over 90% support of its people. Did that save the country?

- Read some Russian-language sources over what's going on with people who speak against Putin, Crimea, and Ukrainian invasion.

Another wimpy pawn move from the maintain the status quo class. Russia and China are moving away from SWIFT already so "stealing their thunder" is a good move? At first glance, the little, "coup" in Ukraine looks like a strong move but all it did was capitalize on some balkanization that already existed between Russians and Ukranians. Long term none of these moves will have any bearing on the outcome when endgame time comes.

By just making these statements the UK had damaged the allies.  This is the second time the SWIFT system has been turned into a serious political weapon.  Now that even Russia can be so attacked many other countries will see the danger inherent in the allies control of SWIFT.  Those countries will in some way support an alternative system.

Short term this might be very difficult for Russia.  The fact that Russia is in the position shows that Putin is not the master chess player some claim he is.  The danger has always been obvious.

The UK just pushed China's buttons without meaning to.  Fence sitters may get nervous and secretly make plans for how to react if also shut out in the future.  This also drives the fence sitters and China toward Russia, I mean, would you trust the US not to pillage your country at some point down the road?  China has to know they are on the list.

SWIFT(or at least the European End Back-ended in CHE) has been compromised by the NSA.  A few years back, the European Branch decided to share their Data for the purpose of "Terrorist Hunting".

Apparently, TEAM_USA acted like a bunch of thugs - taking everything and sharing nothing (from the "results" of their findings).

Again, a Pump-and-Dump situation done by USA, with Europe's SWIFT Team and Govts being the One-Night Tramps promised secure futures in partnership.  They've been "Fracking the EU" throughly.

It's no wonder why European Banks are turning away USA Account holders there.

Someone's going to come up with an alternative to SWIFT.  RUS and CHN most likely will - JUST for their own sakes.

It's a matter of time.  Nothing to worry about.

On the subject of history.......

If you have any positive thoughts regarding W. S. C. you should read 'Churchill's War' by David Irving.

Puts a lot of pieces of the puzzle that is 20th Century history into place.

Old W. S. C. knew when to be somewhere other than London due to 'Ultra' - the cracking of the Enigma code, which he kept very tightly controlled, for his own personal and political ends.

He talked the talk - his one great skill.

Maybe Mr. Hannay is a propagandist (as was the original ficticios character)

It is W S-C btw. His name was Spencer-Churchill as he was a Spencer not a Churchill. His father hyphenated the name, the son dropped the hyphen. Typical Spencer behaviour, self-promoters.

He was the Finance Minister who declared in 1925 No War For 10 Years and made it a rolling 10 Years so he could cut defence spending to pay Debt to the US for the First War. He was out of office by 1929 and it was Chamberlain as Finance Minister who had to reverse these Defence Cuts from 1935 onwards.

Churchill sold everything to FDR even the last gold reserves in 1940 and private company investments in the USA. He loved France and loathed Germany which is why deGaulle survived Us attempyts at assassination

ZH: "But while collecting credit card data was to be expected, what is even worse is that the NSA has also secretly planted itself in the nexus of the entire global USD-intermediated financial transactions system courtesy of SWIFT."

As I recall from Jim Rickard's book "The Future of Money", the Fed and Wall St use the NSA for all kinds of Early Warning and Forensics in Front-Running Longs and Short (on events before they break the news).  They also use advanced pattern recognition techniques in SigIntel plus CIA's HumanIntel to ID specific players who might be hiding in the noise of all the activity.

The BRICS & Friends cannot afford this kind of scrutiny and invasion of privacy, of course.  They have NO choice, but to use the cover of Current Events to exit (as smoothly as possible) from SWIFT, before they get Swift-Boated.

I have three precious things, which I hold fast and prize.

The first is gentleness; the second is frugality; the third is humility, which keeps me from putting myself before others. Be gentle, and you can be bold; be frugal, and you can be liberal; avoid putting yourself before others, and you can become a leader among men.

But in the present day men cast off gentleness, and are all for being bold; they spurn frugality, and retain only extravagance; they discard humility, and aim only at being first.

Therefore they shall surely perish.

Gentleness brings victory to him who attacks, and safety to him who defends. Those whom Heaven would save, it fences round with gentleness.

As an Australian who worked in the very excellent UK NHS for a number of years, I can assure you that "Government Policy" over there is set without much regard for the intersts of the people, no matter which "Party" is elected. A classic example of this was the similarity between Thatcherism (divide-and-conquer), and "New Labour" under Blair - same idea, same policies, and unfortunately, same outcome.

As for the rabid "Anti-British" mindset in the USA  in particular, I'm at a loss as to why this is the case. Britain has supported the US in all the recent campaigns, often with significant asset losses due to "Friendly Fire" - on clearly marked assets too (e.g. APCs with a big Union flag on the top!).

Given that the sanctions and ongoing threats are not based upon any evidence of Putin doing anything and which appear to be fabricated, he'd be a fool to.

Meanwhile, NATO claims it has images of Russian military convoys inside East Ukie. No evidence produced. Russia claims they are images taken from video games.

Its because Putin is a 'somebody'. In a cynical age people forget there are genuine great leaders. We had them in the past and IMHO of the current leaders, the Wests are dickheads while Putin is special. God save the West from our turd leaders and puppeteers.

Putin the martial artist is very wily - he is using his opponents own energy against them. And he is biding his time. Patience is something the West seem to lack. Morons.

I confess, I didn't even read the post- apologies.  This whole ordeal is reminding me of this exchange;

March Hare; Relax!  Have a glass of wine

Alice looks around and replies;  But I don't see any wine.

March Hare; There is no wine.

Today the three stooges (Obama, Kerry,Hagel) say be afraid, very afraid!  A terrorist act by ISIS is imminent!

Alice looks around and says; But I don't see any terrorist threat.

The three stooges;  There is no terrorist threat, we (actually, our bosses) haven't finished up the final plans yet!

As for Russia, the west proclaims Russia has invaded Ukraine!.... there is no wine.

Future generations will look back to these times and wonder why the rest of the world took so long trying to stop appeasing the Anglo-American financial/military empire.
