The move by NATO to extend the alliance to the Russian border is a controversial one that violates the spirit, if not the letter, of a February 1990 agreement between then Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, US Secretary of State James Baker, and Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany.

We have so screwed things up that the rest of the world now sees exactly what they have to do to move forward, because the invincible US is not invincible after all, and now they know they can have their growth like we did in the 1950's and 60's, and they don't need us. If I were Putin, my goal would not be war, but completing the BRICS system, getting all the eastern countries and any other country that wants to use it on it, and circumventing the U.S. dollar. That's where you want to go for real gains: having control of the world's reserve currency will give them what we had here for the last 40 years: low energy prices and a much higher standard of living. They can then export inflation to us, like we've been doing to them for decades, and we'll lose the power to impose sanctions, punitive actions, and all the other abuse we've been dishing out for years. This war is not over land, it's over who controls the financial system of the world and has the reserve currency. Putin will take the necessary defensive measures in Ukraine so as not to be threatened with hostile military installations; he is NOT looking to conquer land, he doesn't have to if BRICS goes into place. He has to minimize military threats to the homeland. The U.S. is going to try to sell his defensive moves as offensive moves. I believe you will see desperate measures taken by the U.S. to try to save the dollar. If Europe wants to land softly, they need to walk away from the U.S.. They have everything to gain turning east, and going with BRICS. They will simply go down the drain staying with the US. I think Europe decides with its choice whether we have war or not.

But when it comes to finance capitalism, Marx is the only economist whose analysis isn't contradicted by reality all around us. The Keynesians, Austrians, Classicals, etc. are all confounded by corruption and government intervention. Marx saw that as an inevitable stage of the development and ultimate collapse of finance capitalism. If he was wrong, we sure haven't seen it yet. It's progressing exactly as his theory foretold. On the other hand, Marx is anathema in the West, for political reasons. Or for the fact that his economic analysis condemns our entire system and says that central bank and government intervention is all manipulation by the capital elites and equally futile, due to the inexorable logic of mathematics that is the basis of finance and how money at interest works.
Putin knows America is forced to certain policies, by economic forces we can't acknowledge. He also knows that Russia can go a few years in a "Depression," and is actively moving Russia out of the finance capital economy where he can. Obama can't acknowledge any of the forces driving American policy. That's why US policy looks chaotic and disjointed. The policies are in pursuit of goals which can't be stated. Putin doesn't have that problem. He certainly has other problems, but he can address them in ways that we can't.
If Obama, and every other President since maybe Kennedy, and any possible President in the foreseeable future, didn't have to try to salvage the interests of the Elites in a system that is collapsing due to its internal contradictions, maybe our actions would match our words. But priority #1 is the keep up appearances and conceal the reality from the majority of the people, and to minimalize those who aren't fooled. Priority #2 is to safeguard the interests of the Elites without tipping their hand. Priority #3 is to prepare for how to keep power once the finance system finally collapses and the collapse can't be covered up anymore. That's where the outsized military, and the strategy of creatiing global chaos around Russia, China and the EU, and on top of reserves of strategic resources and trade routes comes in. In a world where finance has collapsed, men with guns will control economies, and we want the strongest armed groups to be ours.
So Putin is playing the strategy of having the inside lines in a multi-front war. He'll enhance relations with China, Korea, India, Iran, etc. He can't back down on Ukraine, and he has to neutralize NATO expansion on his Western borders before he can feel secure there. Winter will help in that regard.
