This Is How ISIS Is Building An Airforce
The Islamic State is nothing if not ambitious. Despite no record of current 'airplane' assets in their annual reports, ISIS has begun detaining and forcing Syrian pilots to train militant fighters to fly stolen aircraft. According to CNN Arabic, the pilots (and their planes and helicopters) were abducted when the terrorist group gained control of Tabqa military base. It appears that if beheadings, executions, and whippings are not enough to strike fear into the hearts of the locals, then (just as America is tryiung to do), an air assault will greatly demoralize. We can only imagine how this changes Obama's strategy (and just where are all the rest of Syria and Iraq's airplanes stored?)
The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria said in a recent tweet it is forcing detained Syrian pilots to train militant fighters to fly stolen aircraft, CNN Arabic reported on Saturday.
In an account reportedly associated with the militant group, ISIS said in a tweet the pilots were abducted when the group gained control over the Tabqa military airbase in Raqqa Province.
ISIS seized the airbase earlier this month. The major airfield houses warplanes, helicopters, tanks and other artillery and ammunition, which were also confiscated by ISIS, according to several media reports.
ISIS did not provide any information about the nature of the training, according to CNN Arabic.

The fall of the Tabqa air base followed the group’s seizing of two other Syrian military bases and gave it effective control of Raqqa Province, which abuts the Turkish border and whose capital city, Raqqa, has long served as the group’s de facto headquarters.
Photographs posted Sunday on Twitter accounts sympathetic to ISIS showed bearded fighters in the air base, standing next to a destroyed fighter jet and appearing to cut the head off a dead soldier.

This article is CRAP! I worked with Iranian fighter pilots in training back in the 70's and they were pretty lame. I don't think the Iraqi pilots would be any better and the ISIS pilots even worse after being trained by Iraqi pilots. Those fighters will need 'spare parts' if they survive bombs or missles. It's better to destroy them when pilots are in them, two birds...

Lea, it isn't hard to fly a plane. My son did it at 15 (between school and a part time job at McDonalds). Only takes a few hours to learn how to take off, circle and land (no harder than driving a car). Hundreds of them are from the West so I'll bet a few of the ISIS recruits already have flying experience on light aircraft and now just need to upgrade to flying jets. Unlike the USAF they don't have to worry about teaching dogfights, night landings ,in air refueling or 101 other things. Just take off and fly in the direction of a dam, skyscraper or nuclear plant and let kinetic energy do the rest.
So let me get this straight - supposed ISIS fighters who have no flight experience at all or minimal flight experience (and certainly no combat jet experience) are going to get taught by Syrian pilots on largely old Soviet aircraft (mainly mothballed MiG-21s including what is in the picture). It takes a minimum of 40 flight hours to become even competent flying the plane and handling it even with its symplistic controls.
Syrian version of these aircraft were obsolete by the '82 Lebanon War and were shot down in droves by Israelis flying early versions of F-15 and F-16s. Supposed to believe these aircraft somehow pose a threat including to Turkey, Israeli, Saudi Arabia, or even Iran?
Were also supposed to believe the US Air Force (which is vastly overrated) couldn't do one of the core things it does do well and that is blow up these airfield including the non-hardened bunker facilities that house these aircraft?

The Taliban managed to launch some rare fighter sortees during their war with the Northern Alliance in the 90s, but that involved using Afghan Airforce pilots that they'd captured/converted/held hostage. Without proper maintenance and parts they couldn't keep it up very long.

I disagree that the AF is over-rated and will presume, no offense, you don't know much about AF capability, that aside, Israel's early vaunted victories over disorganized, unmotivated Arab armies was almost exclusively due to far superior commend and control and complete control of the skies. How much American "surplus" was involved we may never know.

Well, if they can't fly them, they could drive them down the road, drop a bomb and then step on the gas!! As to the 9/11 pilots, they were certainly not anyone who flew small aircraft and then did training on a trainer. Most people equate flying a plane to driving a car - "Yeah, I can steer my car RIGHT into a building" - the only difference is that the car has four points of friction that "tie" it to the earth and make it easily controllable. A large jetline flying at 400-500 MPH is moving through a fluid medium [AIR] and that makes it so much more involved in maneuvering it and thus not able to be done by amateurs or "computer" pilots...
The bigger the plane, the easier it is to fly. Glass cockpits just dial in the altitude and heading.
Bigger planes need more training for emergencies, that's all.
Airplane bunkers are obsolete as of 20 years ago due to precision-guided munitions. Cluster bombs, they could protect against if not a direct hit.

Agree. It's one thing to find a few broken down old fighter jets and quite another to maintain, equip and operate them. It takes several hundred hours of flight time to become proficient in a high performance machine like that, and 2-3 times that amount in ground training. Very few countries in the world have the top to bottom infrastructure to keep a modern air force flying. Now maybe you could train someone for a kamikazee mission pretty quickly, but there goes your' plane and pilot. It seems the best ISIS can hope for is to become fear fodder for the politicians. When you have to justify a nearly trillion dollar defense budget, these little bogeymen groups like ISIS are worth their weight in gold.
