Middle-East 'Frenemies'

Tyler Durden's picture

The enemy of your enemy is your... frenemy; and so it is across the Middle East as the WSJ notes the spread of The Islamic State has united many parties once at odds with each other to become 'strange bedfellows'.

Strange Bedfellows
Parties that display friction or outright aggression toward one another are finding themselves aligned in a desire to counter Islamic State.

Groups of colored lines between parties represent shared interests.

U.S. and Iran
The U.S. and Iran share an interest in fostering an Iraqi government strong enough to fend off Islamic State.

U.S. and Syria
The U.S. and Syria’s Bashar al-Assad share an interest in quashing Islamic State in Syria, even if the regime appears to put a higher priority on fighting other rebel groups.

Israel and Egypt
Israel and Egypt have come together to oppose Hamas, and they now have a similar long-term interest to do the same in confronting Islamic State.

Syria, Kurds, Turkey and Iraq
Turkey and Syria, long fearful of building up the region’s Kurds, have a shared interest in building up the Kurdish Peshmerga to combat a more immediate threat, Islamic State. Iraq has acquiesced.

Turkey and Qatar
Turkey and Qatar suddenly have a shared interest in keeping the Islamist movement they separately helped foster in check before Islamic State absorbs and consolidates it.

Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq
Saudi Arabia supported Sunnis in Iraq while Iran supported Shiites. They now have an interest in aiding the Shiite-led Iraq government to counter a common threat.

U.S., China and Russia
Russia and China have plenty of disputes with the U.S., but they agree that, as big powers, they are threatened in similar fashion by the expansionist Islamic extremism of Islamic State.

U.S., Egypt, Qatar and Turkey
Egypt’s military ruler sees Qatar, Turkey and the U.S. as hostile to his suppression of the Muslim Brotherhood. They all now fear Islamic State will consolidate the Islamic threat.

U.S. and al Qaeda
The greatest odd bedfellow of all: Islamic State threatens al Qaeda as well as the West, meaning that, in fact, al Qaeda and the U.S. now have a shared enemy.

The best way to understand this diagram requires two steps:

First is to picture the 'american' symbol for Vichy DC with the symbol for Israel (somewhat smaller, providing teh 'stealth' properties) partially overlapping it at the top.

Second, the 'american' symbol for Vichy DC should be at the center of the circle, and the lines between it and the symbols forming the circle should alternate between friend and enemy at a high (and seemingly random) rate.

Everyone hates everyone, smiling into your face but have a knife in case you show your back. Tribes, families, like Al Thani in Qatar, Al Nahyan in UAE, house of Saud in KSA and dozens if not hundreds of others that have relative influence are intermarried and interconnected and competing at the same time. But see, that would require actual knowledge of the region well beyond what could be found in open sources. I bet for the majority it's more than enough, 90% of Americans wouldn't point to the right region of the globe if asked about the location of any of those countries.

An abbreviated extract from Skousens World Affairs Brief:

ISIS AS THE NEW FLAGSHIP TERROR THREAT Whenever a relatively new terror organization starts bragging about how it’s going to take over the entire Muslim world, and simultaneously threatens Jerusalem, Europe and the US, you can bet it’s either the work of an irrational braggart or a propaganda stunt by Western intelligence agencies to give new urgency to the flagging and phony war on terror that has for so long held the West in its Machiavellian grip. Their claims are so far-fetched that they could only be useful at spreading fear among the British and American people who are once again being called upon to support a new war on terror. There is another specific reason, however, for western funding ISIS as a new enemy—it gives the US its long-awaited excuse to get back into the Syrian conflict, and it won’t be to “help Assad” or get rid of ISIS... ....The ultimate US objective in Syria is to remove Bashar al Assad and topple his pro-Russian government so that Israel can finally get the green light to attack Iran without fear of Syrian missile retaliation. In some way the US is conniving to use the need to attack ISIS in Syria as a path toward controlling Syria and taking down Assad..... Every two or three months, former VP Dick Cheney keeps warning about another terror attack. He’s one of the few in the Bush administration for whom we have definitive evidence of his involvement in allowing the Pentagon attack to proceed without a shoot-down. That makes him a particularly evil insider.
In 2009 and again twice this year on January 24 and July 15, Cheney repeated his warning that America must “be prepared” for another terrorist attack in the United States and that it could be as bad as 9/11. That may well be a self-fulling prophecy by our own dark side of government.

If it happens, it won’t be by ISIS. Government operatives are the only ones who carry out high profile and complex terror attacks in this country, and it is probably time for another one as the American public becomes more apathetic each year about the drumbeat for war. Another telling factor is that Britain just raised the terror threat to “Severe.” Something’s up....
...The phony Twitter text supposedly says, “A message from ISIS to US: We are in your state, We are in your cities, We are in your streets. You are our goals anywhere.” The only way that could be true was for terrorists to cross the open border between the US and Mexico—which could easily be happening almost daily—but it isn’t happening we should be asking, Why?

I’ll tell you why: Terror is controlled. If it were allowed to happen and we had a rash of real terror events (the minor ones common to Israel, like suicide bombers in malls or car bombs) there would be a hue and cry from the public to seal the border NOW. That’s the last thing the US government wants to do is seal the border. They have too much riding on illegal immigration as a means of diluting conservative voting patterns.

"Another telling factor is that Britain just raised the terror threat to “Severe." Something’s up...."

Nah, they just wanted to implement further passport control powers, passenger check list co-ops and increase their "if we think you are a suspect, we can arrest you" powers....

"Cameron and Clegg have reached broad agreement on plans to make it easier to strip suspected jihadis of their passports in Britain. But the pair will try to resolve differences on possible plans to impose a temporary ban on British-born jihadis returning to the UK, and plans to tighten up terrorism prevention and investigation measures (Tpims), the successor to control orders."

I just don't understand, but I'm sure that's the way TPTB want it.

After all this terrorism, Islam, ME/Iran/N. Africa stuff is boiled down it comes down to sunni vs shia. No matter how it's framed, no matter what "nationalities" are involved, it always comes down to Sunnis fighting Shias, or vice versa.

The best option is stay out, sell them weapons and let them kill each other, or don't sell them weapons, let someone else make money selling them weapons, and let them kill each other.

But if you insist on being involved, & McCain and the blood thirsty members of congress will insist, pick a side, sunni or shia. I don't care which side. No more "this is not a secular/religious fight", because it is.

Ah, geopolitics, American style - where you send soldiers to fight alongside past enemies to combat a new enemy formed mostly from ragtag militent groups you previously armed and trained to fight the earlier enemies you're now fighting alongside.  I'm pretty sure just about all the weapons and ammo on all sides is stamped "Made in USA", so if people want to change sides mid-fight, at least that will be interchangeable.

FYI, re-estatblishing the caliphate (last one was Ottoman empire) is part of the islamic "end times" teaching and they must bathe the earth in blood before the Mahdi (islamic messiah) will return.

What a tangled web we weave. Things have deteriorated to the point that people in American are using every opportunity to take their eyes off what is happening in Iraq, the country has become a train wreck and is rapidly morphing into a failed State. It is often unwise to take your eyes off a problem for long because when you look back you might find that things have gone horribly wrong, this is the case in Iraq and Syria.

It is amazing so many people don't have a clue as to what is going on. Recently the group called ISIS shocked much of the world by swiftly capturing Mosul in an offensive that allowed the group to take control of major parts of northern and western Iraq. On June 29, 2014 the Islamist militants declared an Islamic "caliphate" in an area straddling Iraq and Syria. More details on the dire situation in the article below.
