Putin Calls For "Immediate Talks" Over Eastern Ukraine "Statehood"

Tyler Durden's picture

Vladimir Putin, who has repeatedly said that he does not favor the break-up of Ukraine - but only greater autonomy for the East, appears to have changed course rather dramatically today. In a speech broadcast on Russian TV, the Russian leader stated "we need to immediately begin substantive talks... on questions of the political organisation of society and statehood for southeastern Ukraine." As The Washington Post reports, use of the word "statehood" reflects a major shift in Kremlin policy towards 'Novorossiya' - it would be a direct challenge not only to Kiev but also to Western European nations and the United States, which have been trying to force Moscow to back down. While not directly addressing the latest round of sanctions chatter, Putin concluded, perhaps ominously, "they should have known that Russia cannot stand aside when people are being shot almost at point-blank."

As AFP reports,

President Vladimir Putin today dramatically raised the stakes in the Ukraine conflict by calling for the first time for statehood to be considered for the restive east of the former Soviet state.

"We need to immediately begin substantive talks... on questions of the political organisation of society and statehood for southeastern Ukraine with the goal of protecting the lawful interests of the people who live there," Putin was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies on a TV show broadcast in the far east of the country.

Russia has previously only called for greater rights under a decentralised federal system to be accorded to the eastern regions of Ukraine, where predominantly Russian-speakers live.

And as The Washington Post reports,

Putin spoke of the need to end hostilities before winter and criticized European leaders for supporting Ukraine, in remarks made during a television interview first broadcast in Russia's Far East and reported from Vladivostok by Russian news agencies. The interview was to be broadcast in Moscow seven hours later.

Putin has said repeatedly that he does not favor the breakup of Ukraine — though Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in March — but only greater autonomy for the east. The word "statehood" suggests more than that, and if it reflects a major shift in Kremlin policy, it would be a direct challenge not only to Kev but also to Western European nations and the United States, which have been trying to force Moscow to back down.

...

"These are the inclusive talks that should determine the relationship with the eastern regions, that is, negotiations inside Ukraine on the internal Ukrainian order with respect for the interests of the country's eastern regions, the interests of Novorossiya," Peskov told reporters, according to Russian state-owned news agency Itar-Tass.

Doesn't sound very de-esacalation-y to us... but we are sure stocks will rally on the hopes of front-running the post-escalation de-escalation buying panic.

I'm struggling to understand what it is about "point blank" range that makes a difference to Russia when it comes to people getting shot.

If/when New Russia is established as a sovereign state, Transnistria and Gaugazia will most likely join them.

In the other news, E.U. unity against Russian Federation is slowly crumbling:

E.U. member state Slovakia threatens veto as Brussels attempts to impose new sanctions on Russian Federation. Czechia is not far behind.

Obviously. There is no other way than giving its independence to Novorossiya. The partisan forces will fight on and on, they're winning and they won't settle for less. See the interview of Alexandr Zakharchenko. The time for the federalization has come and gone. There have been war crimes committed since by the junta, so no compromise is possible anymore.

They had already demanded their independence through a peaceful referendum. Nobody listened, and they tried to mass-murder the people instead.

Give them their country. By any international law, it's theirs.

When you have had a regime based in one part of a country bombing and shelling civilians in another part, the latter don't agreed to remain a united country.  They go.  They only stay if they are conquered as happened with the US South.

I read an article in WSJ about how U.S companies have found a loophole to get U.S oil (unrefined) out of the country.  They already shipped a $50 million tanker full.

I never realized how much maps could really change.  When you are a kid and they show you a map/globe in school they give you the impression that maps are "fixed" and don't change.  Maps are changing quickly in the world today

That was one of the excuses that Bush 41 used to stay out of the former Yugoslav conflicts.

"We don't want to see any of the borders change."

"It's a european problem, let them solve it."

"But if we get involved there, we might have to get involved in other tribal conflicts, like that of the Hutus and Tuttsis in Africa."

My oh my, how things have changed.

Putin concluded, perhaps ominously, "they should have known that Russia cannot stand aside when people are being shot almost at point-blank."

Unfortunately the US and Europe have no understanding of Russia as far as the Ukraine is concerned and that is why there will be no peaceful negotiation, only when the body bags start coming home to European countries and politicians popularity starts to drop will they trouble themselves to try and understand the Russian view point.

This map is exactly the same as the Crimean Khanate annexed by Russia in 1783.... This region has been under Russian control since the 18th century, why do we care? The Ukraine republic is an invention of the soviets in 1919.

European Companies Might Find It Hard to Return to Russian Market - Putin

"KHABAROVSK, August 31 (RIA Novosti) –European businessmen are disappointed with the decisions of their countries’ politicians made against Russia, as it will be hard for them to come back to the Russian market, Russian PresidentVladimir Putin said Sunday.

“The danger for our traditional suppliers is that when one company or another is fixed on a market, in particular, we are talking about the Russian market, it is very hard, almost impossible to budge them. And I think that the European companies, not political circles, as we say in such cases, but namely the businessmen understand this. They are disappointed with the politics of their countries," Putin said."

Zakharchenko is absolutely correct
when he says that, although an
autonomous federation would have
initially been a possible answer
to the fundamental disparities between
western and eastern Ukraine, there
has now been too much blood shed
by the eastern Ukrainians at the hand
of Kiev to make any form of federation
even a remote possibility, leaving
a fully independent State
as the only possibility.

WaPo: "Putin has said repeatedly that he does not favor the breakup of Ukraine — though Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in March..."

I wasn't aware that Russia had "seized" Crimea in March. As I recall, the people of Crimea voted overwhelmingly to rejoin Russia, as is their inalienable right to do so. It is not for Washington/Westinster/Brussels/NATO to dictate which country Crimeans are part of.

Apart from that, I see & hear repeated demands from the EU, USG & UKG, viz: "Western European nations and the United States, which have been trying to force Moscow to back down." But they never explain what it is that Russia has to stop doing. Since the West has not produced credible evidence that Russia has invaded East Ukie, I'm at a loss to know. If Russia is providing weapons and support to the rebels, that's to be expected, since the West is doing exactly the same for Poroshenko and the Russian motive is far more moral than the West's.

Didn't the US/Europe/UN/NATO bend over frontwards and backwards to accomodate Kosovo Moslems and split Serbia - also for Moslem sake - into separate states? It was called Wagging the Dog while BJ Clinton was wagging something else in the Oval Office. So why cant the Ukraine split into separate states? Answer: It does not benefit our mortal enemies - MOSLEMS.

I do not agree on the map/border layout.  4 corrections are needed:

1. Kiev is a russian city, has to to be included into the new entity Novorossia.

2. Zitomirskaja oblast is predominantly russian, it is to the West of Kiev, hence attach it to the new state.

3. We Ruthenians, are orthodox and prefer to live under the Russian rule (as a small nation, you libe always under somebody). This means, that Uzgorod and Podkarpatska Rus have to be attached to the new entity as well.

4. the Ua has to be Lviv and well, if the Poles want to have those nazis, they can take it and commemorate the Bandera killing there 100.000 Polish people.
