Ex-NSA Director, US Intelligence Veterans Write Open Letter To Merkel To Avoid All-Out Ukraine War
Alarmed at the anti-Russian hysteria sweeping Washington, and the specter of a new Cold War, U.S. intelligence veterans one of whom is none other than William Binney, the former senior NSA crypto-mathematician who back in March 2012 blew the whistle on the NSA's spying programs more than a year before Edward Snowden, took the unusual step of sending the following memo dated August 30 to German Chancellor Merkel challenging the reliability of Ukrainian and U.S. media claims about a Russian "invasion."

FROM: Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS)
SUBJECT: Ukraine and NATO
We the undersigned are longtime veterans of U.S. intelligence. We take the unusual step of writing this open letter to you to ensure that you have an opportunity to be briefed on our views prior to the NATO summit on September 4-5.
You need to know, for example, that accusations of a major Russian "invasion" of Ukraine appear not to be supported by reliable intelligence. Rather, the "intelligence" seems to be of the same dubious, politically "fixed" kind used 12 years ago to "justify" the U.S.-led attack on Iraq. We saw no credible evidence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq then; we see no credible evidence of a Russian invasion now. Twelve years ago, former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, mindful of the flimsiness of the evidence on Iraqi WMD, refused to join in the attack on Iraq. In our view, you should be appropriately suspicions of charges made by the US State Department and NATO officials alleging a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
President Barack Obama tried yesterday to cool the rhetoric of his own senior diplomats and the corporate media, when he publicly described recent activity in the Ukraine, as "a continuation of what’s been taking place for months now … it’s not really a shift."
Obama, however, has only tenuous control over the policymakers in his administration – who, sadly, lack much sense of history, know little of war, and substitute anti-Russian invective for a policy. One year ago, hawkish State Department officials and their friends in the media very nearly got Mr. Obama to launch a major attack on Syria based, once again, on "intelligence" that was dubious, at best.
Largely because of the growing prominence of, and apparent reliance on, intelligence we believe to be spurious, we think the possibility of hostilities escalating beyond the borders of Ukraine has increased significantly over the past several days. More important, we believe that this likelihood can be avoided, depending on the degree of judicious skepticism you and other European leaders bring to the NATO summit next week.
Experience With Untruth
Hopefully, your advisers have reminded you of NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s checkered record for credibility. It appears to us that Rasmussen’s speeches continue to be drafted by Washington. This was abundantly clear on the day before the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq when, as Danish Prime Minister, he told his Parliament: "Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. This is not something we just believe. We know."
Photos can be worth a thousand words; they can also deceive. We have considerable experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting on all kinds of satellite and other imagery, as well as other kinds of intelligence. Suffice it to say that the images released by NATO on August 28 provide a very flimsy basis on which to charge Russia with invading Ukraine. Sadly, they bear a strong resemblance to the images shown by Colin Powell at the UN on February 5, 2003 that, likewise, proved nothing.
That same day, we warned President Bush that our former colleague analysts were "increasingly distressed at the politicization of intelligence" and told him flatly, "Powell’s presentation does not come close" to justifying war. We urged Mr. Bush to "widen the discussion … beyond the circle of those advisers clearly bent on a war for which we see no compelling reason and from which we believe the unintended consequences are likely to be catastrophic."
Consider Iraq today. Worse than catastrophic. Although President Vladimir Putin has until now showed considerable reserve on the conflict in the Ukraine, it behooves us to remember that Russia, too, can "shock and awe." In our view, if there is the slightest chance of that kind of thing eventually happening to Europe because of Ukraine, sober-minded leaders need to think this through very carefully.
If the photos that NATO and the US have released represent the best available "proof" of an invasion from Russia, our suspicions increase that a major effort is under way to fortify arguments for the NATO summit to approve actions that Russia is sure to regard as provocative. Caveat emptor is an expression with which you are no doubt familiar. Suffice it to add that one should be very cautious regarding what Mr. Rasmussen, or even Secretary of State John Kerry, are peddling.
We trust that your advisers have kept you informed regarding the crisis in Ukraine from the beginning of 2014, and how the possibility that Ukraine would become a member of NATO is anathema to the Kremlin. According to a February 1, 2008 cable (published by WikiLeaks) from the US embassy in Moscow to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, US Ambassador William Burns was called in by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who explained Russia’s strong opposition to NATO membership for Ukraine.
Lavrov warned pointedly of "fears that the issue could potentially split the country in two, leading to violence or even, some claim, civil war, which would force Russia to decide whether to intervene." Burns gave his cable the unusual title, "NYET MEANS NYET: RUSSIA’S NATO ENLARGEMENT REDLINES," and sent it off to Washington with IMMEDIATE precedence. Two months later, at their summit in Bucharest NATO leaders issued a formal declaration that "Georgia and Ukraine will be in NATO."
Just yesterday, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk used his Facebook page to claim that, with the approval of Parliament that he has requested, the path to NATO membership is open. Yatsenyuk, of course, was Washington’s favorite pick to become prime minister after the February 22 coup d’etat in Kiev. "Yats is the guy," said Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland a few weeks before the coup, in an intercepted telephone conversation with US Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt. You may recall that this is the same conversation in which Nuland said, "Fuck the EU."
Timing of the Russian "Invasion"
The conventional wisdom promoted by Kiev just a few weeks ago was that Ukrainian forces had the upper hand in fighting the anti-coup federalists in southeastern Ukraine, in what was largely portrayed as a mop-up operation. But that picture of the offensive originated almost solely from official government sources in Kiev. There were very few reports coming from the ground in southeastern Ukraine. There was one, however, quoting Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, that raised doubt about the reliability of the government’s portrayal.
According to the "press service of the President of Ukraine" on August 18, Poroshenko called for a "regrouping of Ukrainian military units involved in the operation of power in the East of the country. … Today we need to do the rearrangement of forces that will defend our territory and continued army offensives," said Poroshenko, adding, "we need to consider a new military operation in the new circumstances."
If the "new circumstances" meant successful advances by Ukrainian government forces, why would it be necessary to "regroup," to "rearrange" the forces? At about this time, sources on the ground began to report a string of successful attacks by the anti-coup federalists against government forces. According to these sources, it was the government army that was starting to take heavy casualties and lose ground, largely because of ineptitude and poor leadership.
Ten days later, as they became encircled and/or retreated, a ready-made excuse for this was to be found in the "Russian invasion." That is precisely when the fuzzy photos were released by NATO and reporters like the New York Times’ Michael Gordon were set loose to spread the word that "the Russians are coming." (Michael Gordon was one of the most egregious propagandists promoting the war on Iraq.)
No Invasion – But Plenty Other Russian Support
The anti-coup federalists in southeastern Ukraine enjoy considerable local support, partly as a result of government artillery strikes on major population centers. And we believe that Russian support probably has been pouring across the border and includes, significantly, excellent battlefield intelligence. But it is far from clear that this support includes tanks and artillery at this point – mostly because the federalists have been better led and surprisingly successful in pinning down government forces.
At the same time, we have little doubt that, if and when the federalists need them, the Russian tanks will come.
This is precisely why the situation demands a concerted effort for a ceasefire, which you know Kiev has so far been delaying. What is to be done at this point? In our view, Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk need to be told flat-out that membership in NATO is not in the cards – and that NATO has no intention of waging a proxy war with Russia – and especially not in support of the ragtag army of Ukraine. Other members of NATO need to be told the same thing.

This made my night.
I remember watching CNN (I know, I know) and the statement that "Russia has invaded Ukraine" was taken and reported as a fact. The addendum: "Russia denies allegations"
One of hte anchors actually asked, "why would Russia deny these allegations? What does it have to gain?" As if maintaining peace and speaking truthfully wasn't enough of a reason to deny invading somebody.
Actually in some positive news CNN do have a reporter who is unbiased on the ground and in the last two days has produced some good stuff such as showing the damage caused to the civilians by the indiscriminant shelling from the Ukies and she also covered the "Russian invasion" on the coast and concluded by saying that looked look a militia no regular army here and people kinda supported them etc. Her name is Diana Magnay, I doubt that we will see more of her impartial and honest reports since she isn't towing the party line etc.

If you missed it I suggest reading Jack Burton's comment in the earlier piece entitled "Ukraine Defense Minister Warns Of "Worst Conflict Since WWII", Shifts Forces To "Combat Full-Scale Russian Invasion"". The men and women in charge of this putsch towards war are impossibly sick. If they are willing to charge towards nuclear war there can be little doubt the extent of false flags that have been carried out. The events in Ukraine suggest to me that very intricate false flags are prepared by the intelligence organisations and we may not even know how bad it is yet. We may be about to witness what horrors they are really capable of.
I say this as a person who for a long time doubted that 9/11 was a constructed operation (I felt the psyops knew of the possibility and let it happen).

NATO has maintained a first strike policy for precisely the reasons you outlined, bid the soldier ... NATO's fundamental policy has always been to try to develop ways to make that first strike policy more credible ... However, that has actually always been CRIMINALLY INSANE, because NATO is run by politicians who are puppets of the international banksters, who also pull the strings of the mass media. The real problem isn't the puppet politicians of NATO, the fraudulent banksters, and the criminally insane in general.
According to the hypothetical I developed, the real danger is the US military knowing it's a superpower. In 1973 the US military learned that one day there would be no more fuel for all of its ground and air weapons.
The global population was approaching critical mass; and the global economy was starting to show signs of diminishing returns, the water and air was getting worse and it was predicted that people of color would be in the majority in a matter of decades.
Either from within and/or without, the neocons gained influence with the military. When Reagan took office in 1981, America began it's downward spiral.
The National Debt took off. The US began a series of mini interventions and backed Iraq in the Iran Iraq war, desperate to put Iran's reserves back in our ledger.
I'm not embarrassed to say that I believe there was a plan devised by some in the military, the Fed, the Treasury, etc to cause a worldwide recession, the sole purpose of which was to stifle the consumption of oil. This was the sub-prime housing bubble, which needs no introduction.
Hubbert, who predicted peak oil in the US in 1973 also predicted global peak oil in the early 2000's. This occurred but was cancelled by the production of shale oil in 2006.
Unfortunately, the reserves of shale oil are not great and only will add 2 or 3 decades before the reappearance of peak oil.
To sum it up (it's after midnight) the US army has an idee fixe that they must make sure he the US army in 50 or 100 years has all the oil it needs to do whatever its thing at that time is.
So the US army today is trying to grab all the oil deposits there are to provide for the army of the future.
To that end they have invaded oil rich countries and caused depression, recessions and inflation.
They have embargoed Iran and more recently Russia.
The have deposed the president of Ukraine and are advising the Ukrainian army how to bombard its citizens in the East.
They're trying to provoke the Russian president to attack Ukraine so it can double down on the embargo.

Of course, I have no first-hand knowledge, but only speculate on different possible ways to connect the dots of data that I am currently aware of. I am not sure how "deep" the "deep state" may go! Indeed, these days, I believe that there are no longer any groups which actually fully know what is going on. I tend to suspect that the "need to know" has already fragmented to the point where nobody is left that actually knows enough anymore?
After one agrees with your analysis as being very probable, that situation still suffers from the concept of "national security" having become psychotic. The "deep state" policies you outlined, in my opinion, are still criminally insane, only deeper down on different levels of some apparently infinite tunnels of deceits which are attempting to control civilization.

Today, it appears to me that our "leaders" have become more insane, as demonstrated by the standard use of depleted uranium weapons, when, before the 1990s, that was not considered a sane thing to do.
In every way that appears significant, the pressures are building, while the relief values appears to have been pounded shut. I think that the most spectacular symbol of that, so far, were the events on 9/11/2001, which I believe were an inside job, false flag attack, done by Zionists to blame on Muslims (as my theories on that topic were developed in that long thread.) That is so INSANE that I can not fully comprehend the consequences, since that clearly had the purpose to deliberately start more genocidal wars, along with preparing to impose democidal war. Please accept our apologies on behalf of a great many people here in the Netherlands for our Government and our Media. The facts concerning MH17 are twisted to defame you and your country.
We are powerless onlookers, as we witness how the Western Nations, led by the United States, accuse Russia of crimes they commit themselves more than anybody else. You are aware (you aren't, but play along), that the retrograde motion of the various planets that can be seen by a hobbiest's telescope, that they prove that the planets revolve around The Sun? You are aware of such things....are you?
Don't take my word for it (which is what you do because you are not smart enough to understand what I am writing). Go to the store, buy a 6 inch telescope, and go planet hunting. Measure, time, note, do this for a year, and then do the calculations.
Sadly for you this requires Maths and Science and Stellar Mechanics.
Anyone who wants to is capable of proving that the planets revolve around The Sun, of proving where Earth is in the order around The Sun, and calculating the period of one revolution for each planet - if you get enough data for the outer giants.

Okay, I am getting lost in the conspiracy theories here. The only thing I seem to get is for the anti-USA/CIA conspiracy types is that the Russians are the good guys and at worst just sending weapons to the nice rebels in eastern Ukraine, right?
Do we agree there is actual fighting and a real conflict, at least? That is not photoshop and fake video, right?
Do the rebels want independence or Russian annexation? I have seen about three possibilities. What does Putin say?
Is Mossad and evil Israel in this with the CIA? There has got to be a Jew in this somewhere, right? What is the big win for Jews or Israel? Why do they care? Also, I have seen accusations that western Ukraine is actually some sort of neo-fascist which is bad in this case except when the fascists are also anti-Jewish, right? Which side is anti-Jewish in this, Ukraine, rebels or Russians or two out of three? We know they get blasted whoever it is, right?

It depends on how you define "conspiracy". Japan had a plan to dominate all Asia and be on par with the powers of the West. Is that a conspiracy or a plan? The South revolted against the North in 1860. They had talked about it and threatened it for a long time. Hitler had written a book in which he talked about conquering Europe and avoiding a two front war. The Americans declared independence in 1776. Was it a conspiracy? The bolsheviks beat the mensheviks and corrupted the Army. Are these conspiracies, visible plans, a natural and foreseeable series of events?
The traditional conspiracy would be more Brutus and Ceasar. The problem I have is the automatic predictable opposite-world interpretations of everything I see all too commonly. Some poster before me asked if I wouldn't consider evidence and essentially opposing ideas. Absolutely, I would. However, I also do not automatically see a Jew behind every tree and an oil exec behind every event in the world. I don't see the CIA firmly in control of every event, especially given that the Ukrainians are up against a country that once owned them and is lead by a friggin' former KGB Colonel. Would you not at least give weight to the fact that Putin is a personal firsthand expert in disinformation and espionage? He's not an idiot or some choir boy.
So, in my limited humor and sarcasm I am saying it is hard to tell the truth of things but standing back a yard or two and evaluating it on the larger scale is worth doing. Some things may actually be as they appear or they are at least honest evidence. That is revolutionary thinking for some here, but it is at least possible. And if a volcano suddenly forms in the middle of the Ukraine I do not automatically see it as CIA, Mossad or KGB.

Do you really think those retired guys acted on their own? I highly doubt it. It's just another game in the show to prepare the world for the actual coming war according to my simple and stupid mind. When everything is controlled by Kapital, Kapital dictates in every single way. No exceptions here.
Here in Sweden, you see constant lobbyism towards joining NATO because of the threat of Russian expansion. I just don't see any threat. The russians are not attacking anyone. If any nation is aggressive in the world, it is the United States with a hand in every cookie jar. Where there is an opportunity to steal someone else's resources - the US is there. We don't see media reporting on the russian side of the Ukraine conflict. Russia is made the bad guy, just like in the old Bond movies and Putin is made Hitler or Stalin. That is an unfair description of Russia. But if we in Europe keep doing what the US are telling us to do against Russia, we are soon going to be outmanouvered by them. The Russians are proud, used to hardship and have all the resources they need in their country. This make them very hard to blackmail into doing anything. They also have the world's longest tradition in corruption which make them very difficult to corrupt. This is a chess game we can not win by moving our positions forward. We need to back off our ridiculous sanctions. We also need to stop listening to all the lobbyism against Russia and towards joining the NATO. There is no enemy except from our fear of the ghost of Russian past.
