Home Sweet Drone - Apple's New Global HQ Unveiled

Tyler Durden's picture

Thanks to the ingenious combination of a camera and a drone, also known as a GoPro Camera-on-a-drone, we have the first aerial footage of Apple's new $5bn spaceship-shaped global headquarters in Cupertino, known imaginatively as Apple Campus 2...

As DeZeen reports,

The eight-minute film was made using a Phantom 2 flying vehicle produced by DJI and a GoPro Hero 3 camera. Footage was sent live from the device to a pair of Carl Zeiss video goggles worn by JCMinn via a transmitter also produced by DJI, allowing him to see what was filmed as he controlled the drone.

The footage shows a huge circular trench, which dwarfs the nearby houses in the residential district that abuts the site.

Concrete foundations for the ring-shaped building by British firm Foster + Partners are visible inside the trench.

The $5 billion project is due for completion in 2016 and will include one of the largest photovoltaic arrays in the world.

When you become that big, you are the parasite. That probably explains the dramatic slow down in innovation. No more fruit.

I've always been a Mac guy... so I'm admittedly a bit biased toward Apple.  They're big due to great products and marketing savvy - almost soley due to their late founder's philosophy.  Whether ot not the current CEO & board continue his legacy is yet to be determined.

As an ex-Apple employee, they are a classic example of a "better can opener" that was crushed by Wall St and it's shit can opener (silver spoon Billy), only for the founder to come back with a vengeance....

Only biased assholes cannot appreciate what this company has gone through and proves that against all odds, real "turnarounds" do happen (or did happen) in corporate Amerikka.

Jobs went UNIX early on, but Wall St. and "IT" kept AUX out of the market despite its superior reliabilty and impenetrable security (Apple OS $10k challenge for 12 years straight).

In 2000, they made the "NeXT" decision to go with the Mach 5 kernel and open BSD at the core....brilliant!

Give away the OS....take the market, make "apps" the profit center....

Someting the "stong-arming", Nazi marketing tactics of MS couldn't do....but, hey did you hear?  Windows will soon be open-sourced UNIX....quick jump on the bumblefuck wagon again!

Funny you said that.  When companies built these monument HQ's or put their name on a sports stadium - it is usually the sign that the company is about to tank.

Borland Software built some insane HQ in Scotts Valley and fell apart right when it was done. Enron Stadium and many other stadium names.

Borland spent $120 million and it sold for $12 million.

http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/news/2013/07/25/former-borland-campus...

It was built in the early 1990s.

Apple is much much bigger and they will survive but their stuff is way over hyped crap.

Oh F U and get back on the Google bus to San Fran.  Most of the people on ZH hate your Silly Con Valley En Ess Aye spyware crap.  The rest of the world is starting to hate it too.

I have been there more than a few times.  F**king California before it became a Mexicali shithole had the idiots in LA/Hollywood pitching a script, the idiots in Silly Con Valley picthing an IPO/New App/social web site or the ones in San Diego pushing a new genome.

The Silly Con Valley scam is another Wall Street scam operation to buy overvalued crap companies that make spy ware.

The rest of the world is fed up with your En Ess Aye enabled devices.  It will be funny as it falls apart and the many gangs of East Palo Alto get closer and closer to Atherton.

  3. "your Silly Con..."  nothing in the IT industry is "my" invention sorry to say...how about you?
  4. "the rest of the world"...so, since you speak for the world we should ask you?  You speak to "God" too?
  5. "...been there more than a few times".....so four....right?  Hands down an expert on 163,707 square miles...with more diverse towns and populations that it could be a country on its own....
  6. "...before it became a Mexicali shithole..."  California is a Spanish word, dolt...as it "WAS" Mexico before it was "annexed" by NWO East Coast banksters....
  7. "Silly Con Valley scam is another Wall St. scam..."  No argument there...Wall St. kills all Capitalist venture...and turns it into easily massaged, corrupt monopoly....
  8. "En Ess Aye enabled devices..."  don't use HHTs due to frequency pollution (contributes to closed mindedness and "group think")...but you speak for the "world" so I guess you're right...
  9. "gangs of East Palo Alto get closer to Atherton."  I'm pretty sure that Ellison's army won't ver let that happen...

Btw, what does all of your hate for a state that is 90% redneck have to do with Apple's new HQ?  It shows how little you know about the 3rd largest state in the union to bash it over 10% of the population....but I guess your just an angry asshole who is not happy with the way his life turned out....truly sorry.

Those that conform most closely to the stereotypical version of Western beauty—slim, with long blonde hair and full breasts—earn the most. Those who provide niche services—for example, sex workers who will accept two male clients at once—also command a premium. Location matters too. Prostitutes in San Francisco, where the cost of living is high, charge more than those in cheaper cities such as Prague. - See more at: http://www.economist.com/blogs/economist-explains/2014/08/economist-expl...

Oh my fucking Gawd. It's an architecture of Doom.

"Streets and squares, residential districts, towers, and transportation hubs are not technical and aesthetic edifices, they also tell us a great deal about the attitudes and state of mind of their occupants and users. The specialized technological rationale that now dominates the construction of new industrial premises and dwellings is not just naive, it frequently bespeaks a dictatorial mindset that condemns the weakest to silence… This has its roots in a traditional authoritarianism that is much more powerful present in human society than people have previously dared to admit. Architecture is a form of hard matter that leaves its stamp on people. It affects people’s behavior and can even partially affect their innermost being. In a sense it plays into a cycle that shapes human destiny: people create new Lebensraum in their towns and cities, but this is also a rich field of self-expression with thousands of facets, and ultimately the shape they have given their town informs the type of society that evolves within it."

Does this look like a company that is on its final mission. We can bad mouth Apple all day long and I agree with some of it, but they are one hell of a company and even if over priced, make great products.

Do not think they are going down the toilet anytime soon. Lets see what happens on the 9th. I agree Tim is no Steve, but maybe, just maybe he is getting his stride together.

Cannot speculate. If Steve was alive today, imagine 40% of his upper management would be axed do to performance incompetency. Dispite the fact I loath Apple products, Steve Jobs has very high respect and admiration in my book of successful individuals.

As big as it is I'm surprised that it doesn't come with its own monorail / internal transportation system so that you can quickly get around from one side to the other. Heck, it could even be powered by the solar array on the roof. And there is no way that thing is going to be "carbon neutral" no matter how big the solar array.

Speaking of Icloud and celebrity nudes, here is some backstory on what happened. There are some important kniggets in this story concerning security in general.

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/originalguy-full-story-icloud-hacker-08104...

...

The /stol/ board on AnonIB (short for "Stolen" or "Obtained Photos") serves as a global meeting hub for iCloud hackers. Using specialist password-cracking tools and guessing targets' security questions through Apple's iForgot password reset form, AnonIB hackers are consistently able to gain access to iCloud accounts with only an email address.

...

If you are 3 letter agency or law enforcement with access to people's personal information including things like all previous addresses you lived at, family information, etc. It is very easy to get into an account using the password reset option since security questions tend be like what high school did you go to or mother's maiden name for example. If they have a known associated email address to you then it is just a case of running a simple automated web crawler script if they want. It is a commonly exploited weakness in security methods and not just by hackers looking for nudies of celebrities which they can also access a lot of this information publicly using things like targeted searches on ancestry.com for example.

Keep that in mind when you use sites that require security questions of publicly referencable information since people tend to be honest about answering them.

Remember what Snowden about nudies and analysts. If the feds follow through I'm sure some members of that ring are going to lead right to their doorstep whether it was official business or a few bad apples abusing the systems for their own personal gain...

I am thinking that to be able to purchase the land for this momument to themselves, Apple had to massively overcharge for their products and services, an act allowed and even promoted by their sponsors... and the miracles of labor arbitrage.

While over the years having supplied material support to Apple, I have never personally owned an Apple product and probably never will. (I have purchased several as gifts for my family).

During the spring of this year, in what I believe was an independently conducted test, my son and I compared the EMF radiation generated by his work-supplied iPhone to his personal Samsung phone. During comparable call conditions from my back yard, the iPhone generated roughly 4.5X the amount of EMF radiation as the Samsung... (but still about only 25% of what out microwave oven leaks at close range).

It was obviouly not a highly controlled test and should be repeated by others if they have interest in the results.
