At Least 17 Fake Cellphone Towers Capable Of Invasive Spying Have Been Discovered Across America

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

When Lee Goldsmith drives by one of the many fake cellphone towers being discovered throughout the U.S., his $3,500 CryptoPhone 500 will immediately display the warning message in the image below.

When you drive by the same fake towers, known as “interceptors,” your run of the mill iPhone or Samsung Galaxy won’t alert you to any potential security breach. And that’s exactly how those people who installed these interceptors, whoever they are, like it.

I’ve seen headlines about these fake cell towers over the past several days, but didn’t investigate the matter until today. It appears Popular Science broke the story in late August with the piece: Mysterious Phony Cell Towers Could Be Intercepting Your Calls. The article focuses on the revelations of Lee Goldsmith, CEO of ESD America, which makes ultra-expensive and ultra-secure cellphones (another player in this market is Silent Circle with its Blackphone) . What Lee Goldsmith and other users of the CryptoPhone 500 have discovered while driving across part of America will shock and disturb you.

We learn from Computer World that:

Through notifications such as that, CryptoPhone users found and mapped 17 fake “cell towers” in the U.S. during the month of July. While most phones can’t find those interceptors, a $3,500 CryptoPhone 500 can. The phone has a Samsung Galaxy SIII body, but unlike the Android OS that comes standard on the Galaxy SIII and “leaks data to parts unknown 80-90 times every hour,” ESD America hardened the Android OS by removing 468 vulnerabilities.

“Interceptor use in the U.S. is much higher than people had anticipated,” said Les Goldsmith, the CEO of ESD America. He told Popular Science, “One of our customers took a road trip from Florida to North Carolina and he found eight different interceptors on that trip.  We even found one at South Point Casino in Las Vegas.” He added, “What we find suspicious is that a lot of these interceptors are right on top of U.S. military bases. Whose interceptor is it?  Who are they, that’s listening to calls around military bases?  The point is: we don’t really know whose they are.

Privacy groups have been fighting unconstitutional stingray surveillance for several years, yet there’s still a great deal citizens don’t know about the portable devices known as IMSI catchers, also known by the generic term “stingray.” It acts like a fake cell tower and tricks your mobile device into connecting to it even if you are not on a call. It is used for real time location tracking; some can pinpoint you within two meters as well as eavesdrop and capture the contents of your communications.

They can do even more than that, including pushing spyware to devices and sending spoof texts.

Goldsmith conducts testing on his company’s “baseband firewall” while driving by an unnamed government facility in the Nevada desert that runs an interceptor. “As we drove by, the iPhone showed no difference whatsoever. The Samsung Galaxy S4, the call went from 4G to 3G and back to 4G. The CryptoPhone lit up like a Christmas tree.”

You might know your phone is being intercepted if it shows 2G, instead of 3G or 4G, but some interceptors claim to be “undetectable.” The VME Dominator, for example, is marketed only to government agencies. It promises that it allows “you to intercept, block, follow, track, record and listen to communications using unique triangulation and other advanced technology,” but “cannot be detected. It allows interception of voice and text. It also allows voice manipulation, up or down channel blocking, text intercept and modification, calling and sending text on behalf of the user, and directional finding of a user during random monitoring of calls.”

Now here’s the incredible part. Although the phase out of 2G is several years away, those who wish to spy are so concerned about it, they are already making plans to ensure that surveillance isn’t impacted.

Although it will be a long time before cell phones no longer support 2G, Johnny Law is working on upgrading Harris Corporation “Stingray” systems, with “Hailstorm,” to support 4G LTE interception. The News Tribune in Tacoma reported on a March 2014 purchase order from the DEA, which stated, “The Hailstorm upgrade is necessary for the Stingray system to track 4G LTE phones.”

According to Ars Technica, the Oakland Police Department, Fremont Police Department, and the Alameda County District Attorney joined forces by applying for a DHS grant to pay for the Hailstorm upgrade. “The entire upgrade will cost $460,000—including $205,000 in total Homeland Security grant money, and $50,000 from the Oakland Police Department (OPD).” In theory, more documents are being gathered and will be released this month by the Alameda County DA’s office.

No surprise that one of the most insidious agencies ever created is set to fund the upgrade to spying technologies for law enforcement. I covered this threat in my recent post: Department of Homeland Security – A 240,000 Person Cancer on the American Soul.

Now more from Computer World...

While the FCC seems to have known about cellular network vulnerabilities that stingrays exploit, last month it established a “task force” to investigate the “illicit and unauthorized use” use of stingrays. Instead of investigating law enforcement’s use of such interceptors, the FCC “plans to study the extent to which criminal gangs and foreign intelligence services are using the devices against Americans.” The FCC also refused the ACLU’s FOIA request for stingray documents.

Meanwhile, the FCC is the agency about to destroy the internet on behalf of telecom companies. Do you really have any doubt as to who these agencies really work for?

It's not just the propaganda on the television. They are actually inducing people into a semi-sleep state and susceptibility to suggestion through the 'Flicker Rate.' This has been public information for many years.

I think you have mistaken ZeroHedge threads for the 'Matrix' in which you obviously reside. And as long as people will not summon the courage to face the situation in which we find ourselves, our chances for survival are poor.

It's not 1958 anymore. The food is poisoned by design. The municipal water is poisoned; formulated to brain damage you and give you cancer in over 70% of US cities. There are live cancer viruses in all the major vaccines. 100 million people in the US have already been killed from the Simeon cancer virus SV40 intentionally put in the 'polio' vaccines over a 30 year period. It might behoove you to find the courage to do your homework.

Just an offhand comment on the FCC investigating, what the all mighty .gov should already know about. Kinda like rogue cell towers, with FAA mandated lights flashing on top of them and the local licensing & permiting & commercial power hook ups or sumpin ;-)

I hear you.  Mine was 2 days ago, as well.  I don't normally read much "tech blog" crap but that one sucked me in instantly so I chucked it up as an OT in the middle of an unrelated thread.

The idea there could be a "fake" cell phone tower was patenty absurd on it's face.  A tower has to exist on somebody's property.  And it's gotta have an FCC permit to operate.  Obviously there can't be any permanently mounted "fake" cell phone towers.  SOMEBODY'S gotta have permission to do it.  The minute I read the article I knew it had to be government or somebody authorized to operate them on behalf of the government.

Fri, 09/05/2014 - 23:42 | 5187528 bunzbunzbunz
bunzbunzbunz's picture

Well...You are wrong. It would actually be extremely easy to build a fake "tower" using a software radio the size of a car stereo. You don't need to place the antenna on a tower to get good coverage. It could be on someone's roof. The antenna could be a normal satellite dish or a TV style antenna.

Think in terms of a wifi router. That can sit in a closet and transmit 100 feet. They transmit using about 70 mW of power. A radio trasmitting at 100 times the power (7 Watts) would transmit about 10 times as far.

Edit: and this distance of 1000 feet assumes the need of wifi speeds. Reduce the speeds (to those of a 2G network) and your signal goes even further(farther? i hate grammar). Change to lower frequency and it goes further yet.

All these referenced matters are occurring because there's only about 20 percent of us who understand the threat we face, and and maybe 15 to 25% whom are willing to even vote in primaries and elections, nor are they willing to even contribute to organziations and challengers to the establisment candidates.  So that leaves the mythical III percenters to walk in the shadow of Washington, Franklin, Adam, Hamilton, Clinton, Jefferson and the thousands more who put it all on the line for an idea.    Otherwise close your eyes tightly, keep your head down, and forget about caring about your morality or the bravery of others.

If voting changed anything (that TPTB didn't want) then it would be outlawed.

Voting gives the system legitimacy.

"

Those folks happened upon a fresh slate.  That slate doesn't exist anymore.  How are you going to vote TPTB out?

It has NEVER been the case that a nation/country has stayed static in some period of "bravery."  Read all about it:

http://www.rexresearch.com/glubb/glubb-empire.pdf

They say that things go bad when good people fail to act.  I'd say that things go bad when people think they are good and those people end up leading others to act in ways that always mimic past failures.

Top-down hierarchies will ALWAYS have the few on top and the most on the bottom.  Most only wish to shake up any given system in order that They find a way to the top.  Humans are deceptive... (and it it's not deception then it's hubris that's driving things)

There is an interesting quote by an unknown Indian author that aptly depicts the true situation in those nations under the ZOG:

It's not the government. Since the Raptor / Carninovre systems in the early 00's the governemnt has direct access right to the land line and cell backbones in the entire country and don't need stupid interceptors. This was public knowledge even before Snowden.

This interceptor useage is foreign power and/or large criminal enterprises. Deep rabbit hole here.

No, it's the government.  Having the backbone data isn't the same as intercepting real time with live location data.  They're not mobile, they're permanently mounted.  One of these fake towers is on top of a Vegas casino, fer cryin out loud.  If this was international espionage or criminal organizations doing it, they would be SITTING DUCKS for counter-intelligence efforts.

This is not corrcect. They already have your mobile information as well, they know everytime your phone switches cell towers and can track your movements already using that information. This again is a really old trick. Hvae a look online at how the cell tower network operates and how calls are handled while you are on the move. It's public information.

To deploy cellular tower needs ground - or on rented buildings, need to be away for at least 100m (meters) from the gas station, you need an environmental permit, needs a body that monitors flight license, license needs of firefighters.

Need decent grounding - I followed the deployment of cellular telephone that had no grounding within the norms tower, each time a beam fell and torrava all electrical equipment in homes within 50 meters. Decent ground with activated carbon and other products were made and the thing was resolved.

A cell phone works with various types of frequency.

Military microwave frequency near military bases and type antennas are justified given the need to touch the rho - calls in the middle of the night to mobilization.

Do an experiment: try to make a mobile phone call next to a microwave oven turned on, preparing breakfast, the link will not work.

Come on. ...

If you work for the government organ loguin you have a password to access and use any network equipment within its structure.

For example, a Federal employee of Justice can not access with your loguin and password from a terminal that is connected to the nearest municipality Server.

Things are compartmentalized.

You only get that with laptops and wireless network configured for your personal use, it worked a few years as a coach, know what I mean, a lot of encryption involved in such equipment.

Access to sensitive programs have different passwords and the Web of a department where there is for example only a distant terminal, you will not access this program - imagine you in federal court in Texas, is an investigation going insane in Alaska cold, there is only one terminal and can not access your database - this is because there are several scales of these sensitive data from one place to another, something may be lost or captured between the satellite and antennas.

I wrote all this to get the lost emails.

This is not possible, there is no email lost in any Government queseja the continent, the technology is the same.

The loguin and password of a Government official is linked to a government record, in the case of Brazil, the CPF - number in the IRS, that you use to declare income tax.

I send an email to my boss who is in DC, this email will not for him, the email will be a file server, and THEN it will be sent to my account. His answer is the same procedure.

If you are an employee of the Federal Government and use corporate e-mail, you have no or inside your home and family contacts, privacy, know this because monitorei IPs that monitored me Kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!

No use you get the notebook of a friend during the birthday party of the son to try to talk to your lover, your phone tells you where you are, the IP and the bits and baites be recorded.

Many people believe that a video or sound occupy disk space as in our mortal homemade equipment ... wishful thinking.

There is technology to compress a DVD 4.5Giga at 1:44 with compression programs, the background is all zeros and are baites and bits.

I do not know if I clarified something to you but this is what happens.

Encryption is a beautiful word, if I had a daughter would give this name to it.

Enclapsocriptografia would be the younger sister - is sticking encryption within a package denser data.

If I had a child now, give him a good profession and an interesting name: Decriptografo.

/ Decryption is you open the recorded packets, decipher what kind of shit is inside, translate, turn this into language that any ape - or politician or boss - understand.

Before Decriptógrafo, the unfortunate need to know much, but a lot about encryption.

Needless to say, these guys are weird.

Russian market is reviewing the latest financial news from Zurich's Paradeplatz to Wallstreet over the Emerging markets of Russia and China. Only suckers buy such phones.

My phone tells me when I am off my sprint network and I can block roaming.  If they are pro's they would generate fake telecom Id signals  to fool phones and apps.

Through Sprint I have an Airwave device that allows my phone to connect to the Sprint network via the internet.  In effect it is a mini cell tower.  My is set to private so that theoreticlaly it only works with phones I allow but I could set it on open and anyone close by could make a phone call through my network however I would be charged with the usage.  Curiious how the Crypto phone would ID my device.  Guess I could have a "black" tower too.

Since calls go through my router I am sure there is a way to intercept the signal.

Artur:

With all due respect, if your mobile phone, notebook, tablet or until your brain are connected to a network, there is a chip Network active in it.

Each chip network is in desktop boards, wireless as those that plugs into usb ports etc., each of which has a MAC address.

MAC address (Media Access Control) address is a physical address associated with the communication interface that connects a device to the network. The MAC is a "unique" address, with no two ports with the same number, and used for access control in computer networks. Their identification is recorded in hardware, ie in ROM of the NIC equipment such as desktops, laptops, routers, smartphones, tablets, network printers, etc.

If the most unusual thing the ass as someone is connected to a network, there is a MAC address.

I tell you, that is where it gets ugly if everyone knew that.

Privacy was already!

Pity that few people know it.

Firewalls don't pass MACs: intranet IP assignments and used only internally; I suppose that trojans etc could slip a MAC into an outbound packet... But, yes, it's likely that most using cell phones etc aren't operating them from behind a firewall.

Could you edit out the white space?

It's too simplistic to believe that shopping local would do all that much.  Really, does it matter all that much if your neighbor works for a corporate store selling Chinese stuff or whether he/she owns the store that sells Chinese stuff?  Chances are that on a per-hour basis your neighbor running the store is likely to earn LESS than working for that corporate store.

Further, that local shop might suck, the folks running it might suck.  I've got this business that I've used that I really don't like, but it's the only one that's close.

In the end things will be more local, that's for sure.  They won't, however, be all that much like things are today.

The EMP threat is WILDLY overrated.  If you don't have stuff tethered to a long electrical line (grid) then, unless it hits right in your backyard, you're likely going to be fine.  Vehicles, unless they're plug-ins, have little exposure.

My concern over electronics is the ability to hijack them.  All the new cars can be hijacked.  My vehicles have no systems electronics (required to operate or control the vehicle).  Further, electronic stuff might be a bit difficult to locate and afford in the future: how many with newer vehicles having experienced costs for replacement of various sensors and other electrical stuff (electro-mechanical is more prone for failure).

Fair enough, they may not be physical cell towers but could be other devices which perform the same or similar task.

That article suggests it could be a laptop in a hotel room which identifies and intercepts cellphones in its catchment area (just like Wi-Fi does) but then carries out a range of actions including switching off the phone's encryption, listening in/recording private conversations and sending fake SMS messages etc etc. I gather it's even possible for an innocent cell phone user to be deliberately connected to another person they don't even know. Not good if that other person is on the "terror watch list" or is into organised crime etc.

Entrapment comes to mind.

The implications are exactly the same as if they were towers.

It's further evidence that the USG is at war with its own citizens.

Slightly off topic but maybe not...
The GPS systems provided in your cell phones: Is your position determined by triangulation derived from the cell phone towers or is your phone directly accessing the geosynchronous satellites?

Also, are there any commercially available EMP resistant cell phone cases (Faraday boxes) that not only would protect your phone against the pulse from a detonated nuclear device overhead ( don't think coronal mass ejection is as serious a threat as long as no long wire/power cord attached to phone) but most importantly, block any locator signals from your phone that the govt could use to track you? I understand that even if you take the battery out, there may be enough capacitance in the device to propagate a beacon. (Wrapping and unwrapping in aluminum foil/ mylar bag is such a hassle.)

Finally, no doubt locator beacons of some sort are probably being installed in new vehicles. Are there any retail available RFID or beacon detectors out there to test your vehicle to see if you are " a glowin?"

"computer anti-virus software"

You know how that shit works, right?

It slows your computer down so much that that decreased bandwidth means less chances at getting infected (bottlenecked)! <yeah part sarc>

Like is all about RISK.  I think most face greater risks on a daily basis from stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with any of this here...

Welcome to Eurabia…the continent has been completely lost, and they only have themselves to blame

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture that sums Europe…err Eurabia up any better than this one.  Look at the policemen in fear, cowering away from the fearless muslims attacking them.  The entire continent is finished they just don’t know it yet, within a decade some of the most famous cities in the world will be a shell of their former selves…I for one won’t shed one tear, the anti-semitism eminating from Europe for over 2,000 years has caused so much suffering for the Jewish people.

That's right, and I am at home now too.

When I am out traveling, they might see me in a camera somewhere, but they have no specific idea of where I am at precise moments.  That's the way I like it.

Do you still have a cell phone?

We even found one at South Point Casino in Las Vegas.….we don’t really know whose they are.

OK, since it’s Vegas I’m going to bet ………..it’s Google…….which, of course, is just another way of saying it’s the NSA, CIA, and Macy’s real time marketing department.

These people aren't going to get away with anything.

We are living in the Kali Yuga where we see the death of the earth.

They may kill us all, but they can not escape the universal justice.

They themselves will die but in a horrific suffering manor which they themselves

have inflicted on humanity for thousands of years.

the people of the light will move on.

If you can't see this then you are most likely not of light.

the end.
