I think the issue depends on what you call an adult and what you call a child. In my opinion someone at the age of 16-17 should have the option not to share what diseases they have with their parents, be it cancer or AIDS, as opposed to someone at let's say 12 years.
I volunteer at a kitchen cooking meals for families whose children (from newborns through to teenagers) are perpetually in hospital with various long term health problems. Having fed and spoken with a few thousand people in the last few years, I can guarantee you that very few adults, let alone teenagers, are emotionally equipped to deal with the thought of dealing with cancer or AIDS, let alone dying because of it.
Nevermind the fact that at 16, the childs parents are still legal guardians (nice turn of phrase there), and will need to know what's going on to allow medical intervation to take place - if a 16 year old cannot share something so critical as cancer or AIDS with their parents, there's a major problem with the family unit right there.
