Ebola Outbreak Doubles In 3 Weeks, WHO Warns "Conventional Means Of Control Not Working"

Tyler Durden's picture

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has now killed 2,288 people (with 4,269 cases) according to the World Health Organization, but is accelerating dramatically. In a rather stunning admission, WHO warns, conventional means of controlling the outbreak are not working as the last 3 weeks have seen the number of cases and deaths double.

As The BBC reports,

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed 2,288 people, with half of them dying in the last three weeks, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.

It said that 47% of the deaths and 49% of the total 4,269 cases had come in the 21 days leading up to 6 September.

The health agency warned that thousands more cases could occur in Liberia, which has had the most fatalities.

...

In Nigeria, eight people have died out of 21 cases, while one case of Ebola has been confirmed in Senegal, the WHO said in its latest update.

On Monday, the agency called on organisations combating the outbreak in Liberia to scale up efforts to control the outbreak "three-to-four fold".

...

However, the WHO says conventional means of controlling the outbreak, which include avoiding close physical contact with those infected and wearing personal protective equipment, were not working well in Liberia.

Where it is...

Where it will be...

As the case and death count accelerates...

As WHO shows...

Of course they will use troops. The US would use troops to do anything and everything because it's the only tool we have anymore so everything looks like a nail. When the MIC gets the money and all of the propaganda it needs and the NeoCon slime gets the profits, that's how things end up.

The US doesn't know how to do anything else but "send in troops", "boots on the ground", "drone bomb", "spy" or create another "War on _________ (insert some stupid shit like drugs, terror, cancer, poverty, etc...). That's all US GovCorp does anymore, ineffective, collapsing empire stupid shit and making things worse in most everything they do while the Wall Street, Too Big To Fail, Globo-Corp and MIC pigs wallow in their profits. Get used to it because that's all we're going to see until they can't do anything anymore.

The map of animal hosts only matters if the increase in being cases is being driven by people eating infected animals.

But that was just how the infections started. I thought the infections were now being driven by person to person contact.

The dead health care workers weren't eating bats.

Which means Ebola could go EVERYWHERE.

The bushmeat scaremongering conveniently drives people to BigAg/GMO McFood they can't afford right now, however, it does reduce the probability (or more accurately- delay the inevitable occurrence) of another zoonotic transmission to humans.

Genetic similarity across the sequenced 2014 samples suggests a single transmission from the natural reservoir, followed by human-to-human transmission during the outbreak. Molecular dating places the common ancestor of all sequenced Guinea and Sierra Leone lineages around late February 2014 (Fig. 3B), three months after the earliest suspected cases in Guinea; this coalescence would be unlikely had there been multiple transmissions from the natural reservoir. Thus, in contrast to some previous EVD outbreaks, continued human-reservoir exposure is unlikely to have contributed to the growth of this epidemic in areas represented by available sequence data.

But of course for the colder West they have an other H?N? variant available coming to your neighbourhood soon.

The number have no relationship to the reality. It is in the interests of these countries, especially the worse hit like Liberia to lie and keep them low. If it is as bad as the whispered reports say, NO ONE will show up, especially medical people since they have the highest death rates (constant contact +human error). And as Africa is now laying claim to assistance, "the world has to help us," one might recall that many of the Liberian politicians are now refusing to come back, even though ordered to by the President of Liberia. They obviously know something we don't...

As well, no "president" especially the craven and disgusting Oboma, has the right to send military personnel to do "clean up" work for a fatal disease. I'd desert before I'd go to Africa to corral and keep in line a bunch of africans with ebola.  Let him send his daughers and Michelle as "Florence Nightingales" and then we'll chat. By the way, if you saw the pics of CDC Tom Frieden over there recently you could see the scared look on his face; he tried to control it but it was there, and he looks like he is trying to keep space between him and everyone else in the pics but hey, as he says, "It's not easily communicated."

My point is that given the scale of the outbreak, sending a tiny overpriced mobile hospital is a wasteful, meaningless gesture.  Some hard decisions need to be made on how to contain the current outbreak.  These have been avoided to date because they interfere with business as usual in West Africa for the miners, plantation owners, and oil producers.

How did you do your math on the smoothed case rate? When I fit the September 6th numbers in on a 3rd order polynomial trend line, the smoothed number of new cases is about 110.

Tue, 09/09/2014 - 23:30 | 5200662 Cthonic
Cthonic's picture

Including Nigeria and Senegal there were 586 new confirmed/suspected/probable cases over a period of 6 days, for an instantaneous new case rate of 98/day.  Spreadsheet tracks six different running median and average values and the one reported is the value that minimizes an error function (in effect an ad hoc low pass filter).  Like any sort of moving average it will tend to fall behind during times of sustained acceleration of a trend.  While there are more scientific methods to handle the data, it's what I threw together several months ago to extract trend from WHO's wildly varying data releases.

What kind of 'full force' can be used to eradicate it?  Infected people traveling the country in taxis, vomiting an shitting in public streets, particularly in the slums, infected people moving around for days or weeks before becoming symptomatic, and then roaming public market places looking for food, spreading active virus through packed urban area - what is going to 'eradicate' this, other than massive death?

The quarantine option was off the table a long fucking time ago.  TPTB are using their standard 'we have it under control, please do not worry' MO here, but unlike Fukushima, the evidence of their lack of control is tangible and immediate, not deferred to some time 5+ years in the future.

Buddy, you need to get with the times. Science uses the Metric system. Hell, even the Brits and the Commonwealth gave up the Imperial system decades ago.

FYI... 0.0004" = 0.001 mm = 1 micron = 1000 nm = 10,000 Angstroms.

For reference...

The human hair is (on average) about 75 micron across, so 75 viruses would have to be in a straight line to have the same width.

A Carbon atom is 0.22 nm in diameter, or 2.2 Angstroms. Now you can actually imagine that this sicker is thousands of atoms across and thus has a fair bit of info in its DNA makeup.

Why are we scared of ebola? it kills the old, the young, and the out of shape.  Going by the front page of zerohedge, we have a bunch of obese that probably wont do well with the impact of ebola on the heart and blood pressure.  In addition, there is a chart demonstrating the growing numbers of useless old (so old they use diapers) while the rest of us choose not to breed in these frothy times, limiting the downside (child deaths). Lets make this thing happen.  Then there will be enough jobs and we can more easily pull back on social crutches (lower unemployment, less retirees on SSI/disability).

I enjoy this site because I like to be prepared and I enjoy having my superiority complex stroked. If you guys are in any way similar to me, or are otherwise just a competitive finance guy, you probably work out and are reasonable healthy. Nothing to fear.

It amazes me that WHO still spouts off their 'we expect it to top out at 20,000 cases in 6 months'.  2000 2 weeks ago (at best, probably more recent) 4000 now, lets say 8000 end-Sep, 16000 mid Oct, and then, according to WHO, 'magic happens' and it stops doubling.

Meanwhile, infected individuals travel around Liberia, and undoubtedly every other country with an active outbreak in taxis, looking for treatment or a place to die.  And this is going to somehow come under control?  They cannot possibly have any fucking clue how many cases there really are.

Then it becomes 20,000 a month; then 20,000 a week, then 20,000 a day. I think when we get to microseconds we should think about doing something.

Hiya guys.

So do a quick search for areas of Mosquito prevalence, Africa. If you overlay the results of that search on to the areas Oxford University describes 'At risk', you'll see a horrible correlation. This thing looks like it just might be in or headed for the mosquito population. Complete disaster if that's the case - uncontainable and unrecoverable. Worse than if it had only gone airborne in humans, frankly. Extrapolate that to areas that have Malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases and you'll see where this fucker is headed next - SEAsia, South America, and China. Good job there's no Chinese citizens stamping around Africa to carry it back . . .

Did you do the search? Comment when you've done the comparison of the maps. Aside from the near exact match to malaria prevalence (mosquito vector), the infection rates are far higher than previous outbreaks, and the mortality rate is significantly lower. This suggests a mutation that has made it less lethal, and more rugged. Maybe durable enough to be airborne (no-one is saying), maybe even survivable inside mosquitoes. The gigantic leap in transmission rates and volumes suggests a fresh vector. If it ever becomes survivable inside mosquitoes, or in fact already has made that change, Africa is in deep shit. As is Asia. And India. And PNG. And South America. Florida. You get the picture.

It could be simply flies at this stage ... flies on shit in hot countries are ubiquitous, and the growth rates have stayed constant from the beginning. Mosquitos would have turbo-charged it by now.

More important is to understand how long the virus survives in a turd particle? Or blood, sweat or vomit or whatever bodily fluid that could be transported by insect-human contact.

Oh it's turbo-charged. The worst outbreak of this variant was in 1976 - Infected 318, killed 280.  The most recent outbreak prior to the current one was in 2008 - infected 32 & killed 14. Current outbreak has a more than hundredfold increase and growing. Something changed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ebola_outbreaks

If Africa had the medical infrastructure the West has, this would not be as horrible a problem.

Other ZHers here  who have spent any time on that continent can tell you this is where the word "primitive" came from.

Common sense dictates international isolation of the area until it burns out.

There is really nasty stuff in those jungles. You do not need a "biowar" scenario. I would not doubt various nation-state militaries have researched this bug, but from what an epidemiologist told me a long time ago, "There may be other bugs in that jungle we don't know about yet."

I forgot now how many shots I had to take before I was TDY in one place there, but it had me sick for a week.

Containment is the key. Shut down all flights leaving the affected area. The Advanced countries need to get some supplies in to try and reduce suffering, but that is about all you can do at this point.

Hell, Oboma won't protect the US but he's talking about sending our MILITARY people there?!! Also talking about sending the USNS Comfort (1000 bed ship) to support ebola fight. Don't know bout you but don't think there is ANYTHING that allows the president to place our men and women at risk in a foreign country based on disease; they are a fighting contingent and he seems to think he points his stringy little finger and they go. I'd desert before I'd allow myself to be sent over there. The reports out of Africa say there will be THOUSANDS of new cases in the next few weeks...no military personnel said they would "fight" a fatal disease on a foreign shore when they joined the military. They are to protect and defend the US.

Commander-in-Chief my arse. Ever notice how he loves to use that phrase? That's cause he knows the only thing he is qualified to be commander of is a community organizing chicken dinner. Gawd he must be mad...he surely thought he'd made it to the: 1. screwing all the women he wants in foreign countries where they don't dare talk 2. What most people do not appreciate is that the vast majority of deaths in any pandemic will not come from the disease.  Dying from the disease may be a blessing.  What most americans will die from is the three - six  weeks of hell that will , I repeat, will, occur when the government attempts to invoke martial law.

Cops will turn on each other, gangs will go after wealthy neighborhoods, out of control fires will consume neighborhood after neighborhood, vigilante gangs will go after blacks, blacks will go after whites, muslims will targeted by everyone, etc etc.  Rapes, slavery, all the good stuff that go with societal collapse will become the coin of the day.

The survivors will then deal with the ebola.

Has no one not noticed one of the major "new" things about this strain?  No visible sign of sickness as we got with traditional ebola.  No blood blisters, no bleeding from eyes and orifices, etc. etc.  You are walking around feeling like shit for three weeks until Bam, you start puking out your insides.

By then, it's too late, you've just infected your love ones.

Zaire strain is said to have a 90% fatality rate; Zaire strain is said to be the Guinea country's form of ebola. It may also be that the African countries are NOT Reporting accurately because if they did No One will show up to help them. In other words, keep the body/contagion count Down and get help. As it skyrockets, it becomes "let it burn itself out" theory. It is to their "reward" to keep the numbers low as long as they can.

PBS had a thirty minute with good info last night: http://video.pbs.org/video/2365321806/

Lastly, we now have ebola patients strewn across the US. Given "human error," especially since the medical profession is now staffed with foreigners (foreign docs, immigrants stuffed into the low-pay jobs where they can ogle naked women and spread bacteria since their hygiene practices are horrid), clock is ticking, tick tick tick...
