Art Cashin Remembers 9/11
Today, the 13th Anniversary of 9/11 will see many people recall how things were. To remember that day and the heroes it spawned who better than UBS' Art Cashin - who thought it simplest to repeat what he wrote back then.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2001
On this day, in September of the fateful year 2001, America – and the world – continued to try to find some way to return to normal.
There have been no comments since the atrocity on 9/11. All of our family and staff are safe, thank God. But my office was put out of commission. (It was across a small open park from one of the towers.) We hope to get back into it this week and – maybe – begin regular comments next week.
A Few Personal Comments
A few years back the "New Yorker" magazine ran a whimsical cover showing how “egotistical” New Yorkers might conceive a map of the United States. Satirically it depicted the nation, with three-quarters of its focus on the island of Manhattan. Ironically, after the atrocity on September 11th, the nation’s heart, its concern, its generosity is disproportionately focused on New York in almost the same manner.
Similarly, in each of our lives, the picture we view of the world around us would surely have had us as the dominant feature of the canvas. Yet after the tragedy of that Tuesday, with its image of victims and heroes, of smoke and tears; none of us shall see ourselves so large again. There will be room in that picture for others – many others.
Valuing language and the words that give it shape, meaning and impact, I have always been fascinated by that special group who once wrote for the aforementioned "New Yorker" – James Thurber, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, Alexander Woolcott and E.B. White and others. In simpler times (how foolish! Almost any time was simpler, safer, more secure)...let me start again.....my love for the writers that Harold Ross brought to the Golden Age of the New Yorker (and thus to the legendary "Algonquin Table") was to the comedic/satiric group. The events of 9-11 led me back to E.B. White. He was terrific, but given my satiric leaning I only loved or, at least remember three things about White – his marvelous book on writing style, his caption for a legendary New Yorker cartoon in which an obstinate kid, responding to his mom's explanation that what's on his plate is "broccoli, dear" says – "I say it's spinach and I say – the hell with it!", and – of course – his short story called "The Hour of Letdown" in which a computer built to play chess against a human, stops after the event to have a drink. (I'm not sure why I love that story.)
Nonetheless, the atrocity on September 11th recalled another E.B. White essay. It was (I recall) written over 50 years ago, back when the UN was moving into Manhattan from its early life in "Lake Success" on Long Island.
Much of White's essay, written over a half century ago is filled with meaning and moment this day. It has recently been republished as "Here is New York", if you care to see more. Here are some of the things that bridge generations:
"The subtlest change in New York is something people don't much speak about that is in everyone's mind. The city, for the first time in its long history is destructible. A single flight of planes no bigger than a wedge of geese can quickly end this island fantasy, burn the towers, crumble the bridges, turn the underground passages into lethal chambers, cremate the millions. The intimation of mortality is part of New York now; in the sound of jets overhead, in the black headlines of the latest edition."
"All dwellers in cities must live with the stubborn fact of annihilation; in New York the fact is more concentrated because of the concentration of the city itself, and because, of all targets, New York has a certain clear priority. In the mind of whatever perverted dreamer might loose the lightning, New York must hold a steady, irresistible charm."
"....New York is not a capital city – it is not a national capital or a state capital. But it is by way of becoming the capital of the world...."
"....Once again the city will absorb, almost without showing any sign of it, a congress of visitors. It has already shown itself capable of stashing away the United Nations – a great many of the delegates have been around town during the past couple of years..."
"This race – the race between the destroying planes and the struggling Parliament of Man – it sticks in all our heads." "The city at last perfectly illustrates both the universal dilemma and the general solution, this riddle in steel and stone that is at once the perfect target and the perfect demonstration of nonviolence, of racial brotherhood, this lofty target, scraping the skies and meeting the destroying planes halfway, home of all people and all nations. Capital of everything, housing those deliberations by which the planes were to be stayed and their errand forestalled."
Thank you, Mr. White! (Mr. White earlier in the essay noted that New York and New Yorkers – and all Americans – do good, do what they do, and have traditionally defied logic and their enemies by not only surviving but actually thriving. And all that was true even a half century ago.)
A More Personal Thought
Many of us got out that Tuesday walking through streets onto which ash, smoke and business envelopes fell snow-like, blocking both your view and your breathing. Yet when a stranger was met, they were invited to join the convoy and offered a spare wet cloth (carried in pockets) through which to breath as they walked. When we reached the East River (Brooklyn side of Manhattan), there was a volunteer group of tugboats, fishing boats and mini-ferries that looked like the evacuation of Dunkirk. No charge. No money. Just – "May I help you!" No one got anyone's name. No thank you cards will be sent. But Americans – even New York Americans – who freely give to strangers but argue with neighbors were suddenly one group.
In the days since, as we wander via new strange ways back to Wall Street, we all internalize the survivor’s quandary. We are lucky to be alive – but why us.
As I noted on TV – none of us headed back to re-open the markets with relish or avarice. The President, the Governor, the Mayor and all officials asked that the markets re-open to provide a means for the economy to work – to unclog an artery.
Day after day, traders, clerks and the thousands of folks who support them walked to work. No spring in their step. Resolute to do their job, they are civil but somber. As they pass checkpoints, they say "thank you" to the policemen, firemen, and National Guardsmen who may have lost brothers saving us and some of our friends.
Ironically, the only smiles you see in Wall Street are on the photocopied photos of the missing that family and friends have taped to walls, mailboxes and lampposts. It may take a long time for smiles to naturally return to Wall Street. It may take a long while to find those criminals who took our smiles and our friends. But, we will have patience. As our President said – "We will not tire. We will not falter. We will not fail!"

The past 13 years have been the most transformative in my life. I can remember my knee jerk reaction on that day, followed by dogmatically following the herd. Then came the awakening, followed by a couple of really bad years trying to come to grips with it.
As I sit here today, I am tired. Tired of living in this cage. Tired of seeing my standard of living slipping while everything is good. Tired of the smell of the zombies, tired of the excitement that is heard when the next circus is about to start (NFL currently).
It pains me to see how so many work so hard just to try and keep things afloat, all the while the demon of interest and an exponentially expanding currency sucks the life out of them.
It saddens me because life doesn't need to be this difficult. With all the advances we have today we should be primarily interested in things of leisure or knowledge, not day to day things of keeping the lights on and food on the table.
The worst part is that it is only going to get worse. The only variable is whether it is worse slowly, or worse in a violent, abrupt way.

School for kindergarten students actually started on Monday, September 10, 2001. So why would Lutnick be at the school a day late for the scheduled parent visiting day? What else could have happened on Tuesday, 9/11, that would give him a reason to skip work at his Cantor Fitzgerald ofice on the 105th floor of One World Trade Center?
Horace Mann Preparatory School calendar shows that classroom visit day for kindergarten students at the start of the school year is always the second Monday in September. On Tuesday, regular classes start, normally not a visiting day.

The owner collected $500 million from insurance and has admitted to demolishing it (WTC7) in a televised interview. I believe he collected a few billion from the other buildings though my memory is foggy and I don't feel like looking it up.
Not sure why people are still talking about WTC7. It was intentionally demolished by the owner and he has admitted doing so. He collected a lot of money for doing so.
If it wasn't demolished that day and people got hurt as a result of a future collapse there would have probably been a multi billion dollar lawsuit. I would have decided to demolish the building too as at that time without the benefit of hindsight would have assumed the structural integrity of the building was compromised.

So the owner ( Silverstein) had building 7 ready and wired with explosives waiting for the right moment to drop it at a moments notice whenever he felt like pulling the plug? I guess all the skycrapers in NYC are pre-wired for demolition, just in case the right senario plays out huh.
I am not an engineer nor am I experienced in the demolishing of commercial structures. I do know that WTC 7 was felled at 5:20 PM. Whether or not that was enough time to place explosives at support beams is not something I am familiar with though in an emergency situation it seems reasonable IMHO.
I can tell you from looking at pictures that several floors were in fact on fire after the twin towers fell. So it seems reasonable that a decision to demolish the structure was made, however, like I said above - without the benefit of hindsight and days reading conspiracy theories drinking Jim Beam (like all of us had). In that moment I would have probably made the same decision.
It takes MONTHS to plan a controlled demolition like WTC 7
In an emergency situation, and with billions of dollars on the line, I'd bet it could be done in hours.
No problem, they knew months in advance of the planned "events" for that day, plenty of time to set charges in those buildings.

I don't think we all have to be engineers or be experienced in demolishing commercial structures, because there is probably hardly a town in the world in which a building has not been demolished, so we all ought to be able to ask our City Building Departments what the preparations are for demolishing a building. I would think that demolition companies would bid for the contract, study the structural plans of the building, consult with the design engineers, get all the City permits, empty the building, and then take days or weeks running computer programs to design the demolition, carefully set the charges, and test all the electronics. I don't think a demolition company would be able to figure out, on that short notice, where in that 25-story building to place explosives, and what size and type of explosives to place, and how and where to wire them, or would be able to get those explosives and all the wiring ready that quickly, or would have its men run into that already-burning building and physically place and wire up those explosives on all 25-floors, and test everything, and then run out and "fell the building at 5:20 PM". That seems not only unlikely, but not possible.

Beverly Eckert (May 29, 1951 – February 12, 2009) was an activist and advocate for the creation of the 9/11 Commission. She was one of the members of the 9/11 Family Steering Committee for the 9/11 Commission. Eckert's husband, Sean Rooney, died at age 50 in the attacks of September 11, 2001. She pushed for a commission to investigate 9/11 and to establish a memorial.
Eckert died at age 57 on February 12, 2009, in the crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 in Clarence Center, New York. She had met with President Barack Obama just a few days before her death in her role as an advocate for those affected by 9/11. Obama gave her the tickets.
The whole narrative is false. WTC7 was just one of dozens of holes in the official story. The other two towers were imploded/demolished too. And no plane hit the Pentagon either. And all the cell phone calls have all been debunked (impossible with technology at that time). It goes on and on and on....

there were random fires plus some structural damage done to the building. Water lines in the city could have been damaged due to the collapsing towers makng the sprinkler sysytems inoperable.
If the fires were to spread to a point that it consumed the entire structure it would then become a hazard that would divert already deminished resources to fighting a large structure inferno. roughly 3/4 of the city's fire department was lost and the few remaining were needed for search and rescue operations.
What would make more sense? having your building "pulled" so that you could help save others and not to create an even worse situation or be a greedy asshole an demand firefighters abandon trapped and injured people just to save your prescious building.
WTC7 was demolished no doubt about it. If you look at the many angles you can see the building buckle on one side before falling. it looks like a quick job to control an out of control situation.

There are some people who realize that the physical evidence indicates that the official story is wrong, but don't understand what purpose or interest the government may have had in carrying out the attacks and thus have a psychological relation to the entire event as remaining quite mysterious even though the government's claims are patently absurd. On 9/11/91 Bush Sr. spoke before Congress calling for a new world order. Alright, so the president is announcing a major initiative to the world. What could he be up to?
As the USSR was collapsing, there were major operations underway to seize control of their industry. We need to lay down a little historical context for those unaware before proceeding.
Throughout the 1980s the CIA was heavily involved in cocaine and arms trafficking, money laundering, etc. The most famous name here might be Oliver North, but Bush Sr. is neck deep. Mena, Arkansas is a major hub for this operation under the jurisdiction of Bill Clinton. Long trail of deaths surrounding North, Clinton, Bush, Mena, etc. You can educate yourself on those details.
This scandal goes mainstream around 1986. In 1989 you get the first major form of collateralized debt obligations in the form of Brady Bonds, invented by Bush Sr.'s treasury secretary. Minimally informed people are aware of the centrality of CDOs to the 2008 financial panic and the endemic fraud to securities trades of this type.
One of the Bush/North associates is Neil Livingstone, who acts as a go between to Semion Mogilevich. Mogilevich is one of the biggest mafia leaders in the USSR at the time. Mogilevich has had money laundering through the Bank of New York exposed to the tune of $10 billion. He is a major arms dealer at the time, and also heavily connected to al-Qaeda. Part of a bargain Livingstone tried to broker with DoJ involved Mogilevich handing over a bunch of his al-Qaeda connections.
Around 9/11/91 a bunch of fraudulent Brady Bonds are issued through the Bank of New York, Mogilevich's personal money laundering machine. This manifests ten years later. If you go back and look at the settlement imbalances at banks after 9/11, even the banks operating out of WTC complexes don't have any real settlement issues. There is one major exception however: Mogilevich's money laundering hub, the Bank of New York, is reporting book imbalances in excess of $100 billion per day following the attacks. The rules governing security clearance were lifted immediately after 9/11 - allegedly due to widespread problems - but really just to allow BoNY to clear it's balances without a record. It's worth noting that BoNY did not sustain structural damage on 9/11 - not in the WTC.
So these 100s of billions of fraudulent securities that were not clearing in the days after 9/11 - where did they come from? What were they used for? This is how the west launched their invasion of Russia following the collapse. You'll find exposes about crates of freshly printed US bills being shipped to Russia like The Money Plane in NY Magazine, used to buy influence; the other side of this is the securities fraud used to buy assets. It's estimated that something like 40-50% of Russia had been bought up through the mafia by late 92 or 1993.
In 2000/2001 Putin comes onto the scene. He starts nationalizing Russian assets that were seized by the US via the above mentioned securities fraud / money laundering and putting pressure on the mob. Next thing you know 9/11 happens. There are a lot of bones to pick with the official story, but rather than taking up those issues I'd like to highlight the importance of some officially acknowledged but underreported facts.
On 9/9/01 Ahmad Massoud is assassinated by a fake TV crew that disguised a bomb as a TV camera. Two days later the secret service denies access to a couple of guys claiming to have an interview lined up with Bush in Florida on the morning of 9/11. This is our first direct threat against Bush of the day and indication of some larger plot than hijacked planes. Upon learning of the attacks, Bush insists on returning directly to Washington. In flight, a threat is received in the form of a call from an unknown source saying "Angel is next," angel being code for the president that only insiders would have. (* "Can you confirm the substance of that threat that was telephoned in...that Air Force One is next and using code words?" Fleischer: "Yes, I can. That's correct."(September 13)* )Bush is at this point aware that there is some sort of coup effort going on; for example, all the reporter's onboard AF1 are required to turn their cellphones off because they are worried about the attacking faction tracking cell signals - a capability we can all agree is well beyond that of al-Qaeda.
So Bush is under threat from people with high level insider knowledge. Press secretary acknowledged all this on national TV the day after (Angel is next being called in). Bush diverts to Barksdale which is basically the #2 nuclear command site. After a couple hours there he proceeds to Offutt, which is the #1 nuclear command site. You should also be aware of a variety of drills running on the day of 9/11, Vigilant Guardian. This is a full scale mock up of nuclear war; the whole infrastructure is activated for first strike (incidentally, part of the Vigilant Guardian drill in 2001 included a hijacking of planes as the instigator of the conflict). So what is Bush doing going to Barksdale and Offutt? Clearly trying to bring the nuclear forces to heel in light of learning of high level insider power plays.
This might be starting to sound a bit over the top - high level insiders seizing control of nuclear infrastructure and threatening the president with it. But only a few years later we have a similar incident in 2007 as 6 nuclear weapons are seized, generally regarded as intended for use starting the war in either Iran or Georgia. Later, in 2013, we again have nukes going off base unauthorized. Hours after it was reported in the media Sen. Graham is on TV warning of a nuke hit on South Carolina to be blamed on Syrian rebels; two of top nuclear commanders get dismissed in the following weeks. So high level insider fighting over the nuclear arsenal is pretty standard stuff, well known to the public.
With the question of a struggle over the nuclear arsenal now being common sense rather than shocking, we consider Bush caving to the terrorism line and starting the whole war on terror. You have Putin immediately backing off the seizure of assets in Russia. It won't be until the last couple of years that Putin resumes his assertion of authority over Russia; the US responds in kind with attacks on Syria and Ukraine but Russia has since quietly updated it's missile program and is prepared for nuclear war this time around; you now see a defiant Putin in the face of the 9/11 coup faction. Alongside this remarkable shift in geopolitics, there is an emerging anti-dollar block with the BRIC countries establishing an infrastructure bank last year. Just weeks ago, Glazyev announced this and is widely regarded as being the mouth of Putin; he organized the recent gas deal with Chin for example.
So you see 9/11 was a pivotal event used to extend the US dollar empire under threat of nuclear war for another 10-15 years in the face of an assertive Putin back in 2001 and growing domestic problems for the US Government. (You may recall the 90s was full of anti government militancy, concern over globalization, NAFTA, extraordinary distrust, in general what you would expect of citizens in an empire with no apparent external threat ... the cold war had ended)
So now that broad outline of purpose and motivation for 9/11 is clear, it's easier to come to terms with what your eyes tell you looking at Building 7 implode into its foot print at free fall for example. You don't even necessarily have to view it as an evil thing; the US people are quite severely fucked without something being done to backstop the US dollar.

Bill Still takes the position that anybody not questioning the goernments account is a little soft in the head and lacking in patriotism. Paul Craig Roberts holds that anybody who believes a word of the government's account is a complete fool.
All I can say is: 'Why did WTC7 come down at free fall speed.' Denninger argues that QE must stop because it has to do so "of its own weight' if you will. Who (what foreigners) will continue to purchase the "excess" paper that the Fed can't/won't buy. HE also points out that many, many retirement funds have to have US Treasuries, that what they have been buying has no/zero yield, that the average duration is about seven years - about how long we have been in ZIRP - and that therefore they are chock full of zero yield instruments with no hope of ever servicing retirees. He makes the same argument about mortgage funds with the focus on the seven year duration parameter. If the foreigners don't stop QE, then the various investment funds will. We will have in-your-face "return free risk," to quote James Grant. I find these arguments compelling.
Others - Jim Rogers, "Jim Willie", etc make excellent arguments that the Fed wil keep on printing because it can and has to. Hard to dismiss.
