Washington’s Iraq-Syria Policy: Throwing the Ball to a Midget Surrounded by an Entire Team of 7-Foot Basketball Players

George Washington's picture

Lebanon’s Daily Star reports that so-called “moderate” Syrian rebels support ISIS terrorists:

We are collaborating with the Islamic State and the Nusra Front [another extremist and hard-line Islamic terrorist group] by attacking the Syrian Army’s gatherings in … Qalamoun,” said Bassel Idriss, the commander of an FSA-aligned rebel brigade.

***

A very large number of FSA members [in Arsal] have joined ISIS and Nusra,” Abu Fidaa [a retired Colonel in the Syrian army who is now the head of the Revolutionary Council in Qalamoun] said

The New York Times writes:

President Obama’s determination to train Syrian rebels to serve as ground troops against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria leaves the United States dependent on a diverse group riven by infighting, with no shared leadership and with hard-line Islamists as its most effective fighters.

After more than three years of civil war, there are hundreds of militias fighting President Bashar al-Assad — and one another. Among them, even the more secular forces have turned to Islamists for support and weapons over the years, and the remaining moderate rebels often fight alongside extremists like the Nusra Front, Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria.

***

Analysts who track the rebel movement say that the concept of the Free Syrian Army as a unified force with an effective command structure is a myth.

***

The Syrian rebels are a scattered archipelago of mostly local forces with ideologies that range from nationalist to jihadist. Their rank-and-file fighters are largely from the rural underclass, with few having clear political visions beyond a general interest in greater rights or the dream of an Islamic state.

***

Some European allies remain skeptical about the efficacy of arming the Syrian rebels. Germany, for instance, has been arming and training Kurdish pesh merga forces in Iraq, but has resisted doing the same for any groups in Syria — partly out of fear that the weapons could end up in the hands of ISIS or other radical groups.

We can’t really control the final destination of these arms,” said Peter Wittig, the German ambassador to the United States.

***

The fluidity of battlefield alliances in Syria means that even mainline rebels often end up fighting alongside the Nusra Front, whose suicide bombers are relied on by other groups to soften up government targets.

Even the groups that the U.S. has trained tend to show up in the same trenches as the Nusra Front eventually, because they need them and they are fighting the same battles,” Mr. Lund said.

***

Current and former American officials acknowledge the government’s lack of deep knowledge about the rebels. “We need to do everything we can to figure out who the non-ISIS opposition is,” said Ryan C. Crocker, a former United States ambassador to Iraq and Syria. “Frankly, we don’t have a clue.”

This is – of course – another example of the “facts being fixed around the policy”,  just as in Iraq. In Iraq, we wanted regime change, so we made up the “weapons of mass destruction” and “Saddam backed Al Qaeda” myths.

Similarly, Washington wants regime change in Syria, so it’s making up a myth of the “moderate Syrian rebel” who hates Assad and ISIS.   But they “don’t have a clue” as to such a mythical unicorn actually exists (spoiler alert: it doesn’t).

The New York Times reported over a year ago that virtually all of the rebel fighters in Syria are hardline Islamic terrorists.  Things have gotten much worse since then … as the few remaining moderates have been lured away by ISIS’ arms, cash and influence.

Saudi Arabia – one of the main sources of Islamic terrorism, and one of ISIS’ main backers – is also going to train “moderate” Syrian rebels.

Of course, arming the “moderate” Syrian rebels is what created ISIS – and was the source of their weapons – in the first place.  And our prior policy of arming “moderate Syrian rebels is what allowed ISIS to take over much of Iraq.

The U.S. and our closest allies in the region – like Jordan – have also been training Islamic jihadists in Syria for years. And see this, this, this and this.  (And – underneath the partisan hackery – arming the Syrian rebels is what Benghazi was really about.)

Brilliant …

Michael Shank – Adjunct Faculty and Board Member at George Mason University’s School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, and director of foreign policy at the Friends Committee on National Legislation – warned a year ago:

The Senate and House Intelligence committees’ about-face decision last week to arm the rebels in Syria is dangerous and disconcerting. The weapons will assuredly end up in the wrong hands and will only escalate the slaughter in Syria. Regardless of the vetting procedures in place, the sheer factionalized nature of the opposition guarantees that the arms will end up in some unsavory hands. The same militant fighters who have committed gross atrocities are among the best-positioned of the rebel groups to seize the weapons that the United States sends to Syria.

***

Arming one side of Syria’s multi-sided and bloody civil war will come back to haunt us. Past decisions by the U.S. to arm

insurgencies in Libya, Angola, Central America and Afghanistan helped sustain brutal conflicts in those regions for decades. In the case of Afghanistan, arming the mujahideen in the 1980s created the instability that emboldened extreme militant groups and gave rise to the Taliban, which ultimately created an environment for al Qaeda to thrive.

***

Arming the enemies of our enemies hasn’t made the U.S. more friends; it has made the U.S. more enemies.

***

Some armed opposition factions, including powerful Islamist coalitions, reject negotiation altogether. Yet these are the same groups that will likely seize control of U.S.-supplied weapons, just as they’ve already seized control of the bulk of the rebels’ weaponry.

***

When you lift the curtain on the armed groups with the most formidable military presence on the ground in Syria, you find the Al Nusra Front and Al Farough Brigades. Both groups are closely aligned with Al Qaeda and have directly perpetrated barbaric atrocities. The Al Nusra Front has been charged with beheadings of civilians, while a commander from the Al Farough Brigades reportedly ate the heart of a pro-Assad soldier.

Shank’s warning was ignored, and his worst fears came to pass.  And since the Obama administration is doubling-down on the same moronic policy, it will happen again …

Obama’s policy is like throwing weapons into a crowd of enemies … and hoping some good comes out of it.

It’s like throwing the ball to a midget surrounded by an entire team of 7-foot basketball players.

Who do you think will end up with the ball?

- I'll give you weapons to fight IS (ah, whos side is FSA on? Oh, our side).

- Ah, sure Barry (thinks: does he really believe us to be that stoopid?)

- I'll give weapons only to moderate rebels.

- No worry, we're FSA (it's so obvious now, he still expects us to kill ourself...).

- You get any support necessary, and by the way, Assad must be destroyed.

- Oh, sure, we know what to do (Thank god, Carthago already has been destroyed...).

Repeat after me. Everything will fall into place once you ditch the "ISIS is like another Al Qaeda".

ISIS *is* Al Aqaeda. It comes from exactly the same place - a corner office in Langley, VA with funding from Qatar and SA, and inception from the City and Tel-Aviv.

When ISIS volunteers come from the UK, when they have blue eyes and nobody with the US/UK/SA/Israel/Turkey wants to bomb them, when they show up with slick videos and "intelligence about Obama's next move", when they never seem to make a threat to Israel or any sort of religious statement, the evidence points in one direction.

ISIS comes from the same minds that came up with 9/11, and those minds are not Muslim, they are Zionist.

The media presents for the sheeple a theater of the absurd, where emoting replaces reason. The bad, Assad, ISIS, Iran and Hezbollah wear black masks, while the good rebels, the US, Saudis and Qatar have white masks. In the initial act, the bad behead, murder and poison gas their white-masked victims. The enraged sheeple cheer in the next act, as their champions vow to help the victimized good rebels. The sheeple anticipate the next act, where their champions fight for the white-masked victims.

The sheeple, intoxicated on their opiate of trust in their masters, are entertained by the media's absurd theatrical farce. While the sheeple's high feels good, the final low will be devastate.

I think that the larger strategy is to deliberately make things get so bad that there will appear to be justifications to start using weapons of mass destruction. The ruling classes are criminally insane. They welcome the ways that there will be worse and worse blow back. Their apparent end goal is to cause conditions to deteriorate sufficiently that they will be able to go full tilt at genocidal wars, along with democidal martial law.

My analysis is that the ruling classes have concluded that the foreseeable future over the next Century or so requires the majority of the human population be mass murdered. The social pyramid systems based on small minorities who specialize in being dishonest and violent, in order to control large majorities who are thereby kept ignorant and afraid, have been too successful for too long. All reasonable projections of the future of civilization during the next Century or so are based upon the strip-mining of the planet reaching real limits, manifesting as drastically diminishing returns. Without some prodigious series of technological miracles, and even greater political miracles, then the human species has already ridden exponential growth to severely unsustainable degrees. Our entire economy became based on turning natural resources into garbage and pollution as fast as possible, "paid" for with "money" made out of nothing as debts.

The vast majority of people inside of that system of enforced frauds became incompetent political idiots, brainwashed to believe in bullshit by the school systems and the mass media. There are no practical ways to change their thinking. The vast majority of people have become Zombie Sheeple, who were being fleeced to exhaustion, while being set up to be slaughtered. In my view, that tragic trajectory is too far gone now to be able to prevent it following through.

The basic systems were debt slavery backed by wars based on deceits. That debt slavery has generated numbers which are debt insanities, which have NO solutions within the entrenched Money As Debt systems. Since the world has been driven deeper and deeper into a situation of debt insanities, which have no apparently possible better resolutions, as long as enough people continue to be Zombie Sheeple, then the only possible resolutions to those real problems are death insanities, i.e., more genocidal wars, along with democidal martial law.

The creation of ISIS was done by the Western powers, such as through the decades long course of events, like the CIA's overthrow of the moderate government of Iran in 1950s, onwards, through events like the inside job, false flag attack on 9/11/2001, which was the foundation for another quantum leap into more genocidal wars abroad, along with preparing to impose democidal martial law within Western countries. Those things are following out a criminally insane agenda, which appears the only practically possible one at the present time.

None of the events make sense, except when one faces that facts that human beings are necessarily headed towards events which will become death insanities during the next Century or so, and civilization is headed in that direction at an exponentially accelerating rate. The ruling classes, I believe, are acting on the basis of their psychological and political habits, to deliberately drive conditions to deteriorate to the point where there will appear to be rational reasons to start using weapons of mass destruction, in order to sufficiently mass murder hundreds of millions or billions of people. That doing so abroad will blow back at home is part of that overall strategy. As above, so below, & as within, so without: genocidal wars and democidal martial law.

Since it is practically impossible to develop any better death controls to back up any better debt controls, the runaway systems of debt slavery, backed by wars based on deceits, must necessarily result in the debt insanities provoking death insanities. In a perverse way, human civilization as a whole has already become too criminally insane. There are no practical political ways that I can perceive to prevent the on-coming death insanities, since the only things which could actually do that would have to be better death controls systems, to accomplish those purposes in better ways. Although that is theoretically possible, there are no politically practical ways to accomplish that. The vast majority of people have already become Zombie Sheeple, and they are being set up to be slaughtered.

In my opinion, the apparently insane policies of feeding the ISIS Wild Dogs are due to the Vicious Wolves having a longer term plan to simultaneously mass murder ISIS and most of the other people in those countries, as well as allowing for that to blow back into Western countries. Since we have developed a globalized civilization which was able to operate fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting systems, that have built everything on the basis of strip-mining the natural resources of the planet, without any sane plan for the future consequences from doing that, we are defaulting towards the criminally insane plan of those who made and maintained that fraudulent monetary system, to use their kind of murder systems, to resolve the problems that will arise during the next Century or so, at an exponentially increasing rate, by deliberately driving the conditions which will finally result in genocidal wars, along with democidal martial law, that mass murders the majority of the human population.

In general, those who oppose the madness of the established systems tend to not face how MAD they really are! Furthermore, there tends to be a refusal to face the facts regarding how out-of-control that situation has already become. As the current kinds of human and industrial ecologies go through the overshooting exponential growth, towards catastrophic collapses into crazy chaos, the criminally insane people directing that to happen are carrying through their historically established action patterns, while the vast majority of people who are being directed by that plan continue with their own kinds of social habits. Too bad, so sad ...

The social pyramid systems were designed so that it was supposed to be that, when things got bad, those at the top would survive, while those at the bottom did not survive. In my view, we are reaching an unprecedented point of criminal insanity where that entire social pyramid system itself may not survive through this. However, at the present time, the Vicious Wolf-like people are feeding the Wild Dog-like people, while the vast majority of Zombie Sheep-like people are unwilling and unable to do anything effective to prevent that from continuing to happen.

radical, i have to disagree with you.

mass genocide is generally a byproduct of the swarm's queen behavior not the 'goal'.

killing everyone isn't the goal because that is not what solves the problem of 'control' , it is simply a byproduct of the overall means---the strategy===of creating chaos and then offering solutions.

hitler didn't want to kill the jews becaus ehe thought that would help win world war 2 ( if he had known how much it would hurt him , because of succesful engineers leaving and wasting reousrces on setting up labor camps that provided amounts of labor which were not terribly significant relative to what could have been achieved without slave labor because of industrialization , he may not have done it.).

the world is far more at risk to mass death simply because the growht curve has been going to strong for so long. pretty much any distrubrance to food transport/distrubtion, oil transport distribution, and other logistics distribution will result in financial breakdowns  that result in chaos , theft, hoarding, and 'bunkering down' where those without are left to die or steal to live.

i personally believe it is essential to learn about the knowledge scientists have learned by studying swarm anilmals and herd animals. with smaller societies humans use to behave more like herd and pack animals. but our larger civilization more clearly operate as swarms.

the QUEEN of a swarm, terminte or ant controls through pheromones which direct the group of insects around her to run the lower classes. i'm not going to go into detail here, but ants and termites in the SAME SWARM do kill each other for VARIOUS REASONS. almost as various as you see the reasons human beings kill each other. there are systemic sources of bheavioral conflict which guide most conflict. 'defection' is crime. 'enforcement' is 'punishment of crime' .

but in the life of the swarm there are points where the nest/hive actually fall apart or are destroyed for many reasons. the insects KNOW this is happening and choose to leave the nest or stay , IF THEY HAVE A CHOICE....new nests are formed as old ones are abandoned or destroyed or as existing members of the nest leave to start new nests.

genocides do happen as a part of the cycle of insects ocmpeting for existence. but the insects are trying to SURVIVE. they are not ALL consciously trying to end all the species.  there is no 'collective' hive mind. there is only systemic behavior that is observed as the swarm arising form the individual behaviors of the insects. while there are queens, workers, and older and younger insects with various distinct abilities---------there is no 'collective' mind of the hive. what is observed as a collective behavior studied by scientisits is a complex interplay of amny many many actors .

if you look at our societies----the philosophers and students are constnatly trying to expalin their lives by looking at a 'social pyramid system' . there is nothing but an illusion of a 'system' maintained to perpetuate the anarchy that is existence. rules are made to be broken. behaviors cannot be confined by words, they are DESCRIBED by words.

the top does not design anything, they are stuck in the existence of the world same as everyone else, only they have more resources and a set of abiilities or capacities not necessarily possessed by people at the bottom.

your idea that simply because people are at the top and the system is inherently violent is very much the same as a creationist /intelligent design religious outlook on how society is organized.

the dialectics of organization that we call 'history' is something we tell ourselves to explain the wrold and make sense of it. but it's mostly nosnense, as history is mostly a set of lies agreed upon and to the extent it is not and can be described in some relatively accurate objective set of facts--------there is only a set of behaviors and actions. all the stories about 'dialiectics' are just stories about stories. 'communism' 'capitlism' and other isms cannot rightly be regarded as antyhign other than a set of stories driving dialictical motivation for murder or redistricution or sending food in certain areas rather than others.

at the very highest possible level of looking at the system---there is only anarchy. and as you get closer and closer-----you start to see 'order' as a way of explaining the anarchy. this is what you see when you study insect swarms. the more detials you look for, the more you actually see a lto of fascinating behavior on the part of the individuals and 'castes'. but if you are looking at hives as a whole, it is a game of anarchy that no individual member can conceive of, but are subsumed by.

Mate thats the best analysis I have ever heard regarding the present situation . Two things I dont agree with 1. The time frame  2 .There are forces in the way of the BRICS nations that are working against it . The comment is too much from an an American perspective . Apart from that brilliant analysis.

YES.

Only thing I can see is exponential sharing and support for .org' s like Aavez.  But far more radical and info sharing.  Has to go world-wide viral in some kind of unity.

But that is the point of trying to shut down and control TOR and internet traffic is it not?

Daily Bell  compared the internet to the Guttenberg press years ago in terms of the power to share information beyond the gov./banker/Vatican/royalty/insanity propoganda.  There are many many people who are not sheep.

Thing is to bring minds together in some unity.  Hence the war on internet.

We get closer to the North Korea model every day.

"I think that the larger strategy is to deliberately make things get so bad that there will appear to be justifications to start using weapons of mass destruction."

I actually heard George Noory say something like that on C2C radio Thursday night.  If pop culture mavens like him say maybe we should just use a small nuke on ISIS, what are the so-called serious people saying?  And planning?

Amazing how these guys are going to get armed.  I'm SURE that they won't get any Assault Weapons right.  After all Assault Weapons are bad and we can't trust American Citizens with them.  Right Obama, Cuomo.  Only 7 rounds per freedom fighter per day!

Obama and the media have attacked the very Americans that normally would back up the commander in chief of the Armed forces.

Not this time. No way.

If I can't OWN a gun, I will not CARRY one for this government!

The US doesn't just look weak. It is weak. Attacking the core of Americas strength will come home to roost. The core is you and me and every armed citizen. Those rights were declared inalienable for a reason.

Our enemies know this. Send the EBT thugs to fight, patriots need to sit this one out.

Not really odd at all. Insane yes.

But all these idiots, like the young, believe THEY will survive.  They got caves and bunkers and servants building up stashes for them.  They have that "special ticket" for the plane that takes off for hidden mountain refuges.  They all believe they are immune to the consequences because they are the the true "exceptional" ones.

Sort of like the Jehovah's Witnesses who (correct me if I am wrong) promise only so many seats at the poker table in Heaven....but have way more members.  Sorta like the futures markets.  ONE person has the plane ticket to "safety" yet it has been promised to hundreds of expendable minions.

Or maybe I am the one who is deluded.  All I know is I live where few other people do. In an area that I can self-support and with very good winds that blow away crap.  Nothing to nuke here. Move along.

That's what happens when you're a tool of Israel and keep trying to deny that fact by insisting on some original, non-existant strategy of your own.

When the only reason to get involved in Syria was to further Israel's Syrian-Iraq-Iran destabilization goals, you got nothing. No strategy. No end-game. Nothing. That's the down-side of being a traitorous dual-citizen lapdog in congress. After the bribes, there's no other personal benefits.

Israel's latest campaign (if it's not obvious to everyone already) is to take down Putin and disassemble Russia. Yeah... I know. But look who they got to do the work for them again (hint: dual-citizens).

It's way beyond the time to recognize Israel a terrorist nation and threat to humanity. No reason to attack them or anything like that, but their state agents should be classified as terrorists and banned from entering any other nation on earth. Not that that's ever going to happen. Dual-citizen U.S. congressmen should be suspended from office and investigated for sedition and treason, at the very least.

There is NOTHING in the U.S. constitution about sacrificing the nation for the benefit of Israel.

The destruction of Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Lybia and Lebanon...all major enemies of Israel, some in permanant civil war while the US ensures that no one wins.  If Assad gains the upper hand, bomb him, if ISIL, bomb them, with some lame excuse that we can find moderate arab George Washingtons just ready and able to bring liberal democracy if we just give them weapons, or should I say even more weapons to make up for those that found their way into the ISIL's hands.  MIstake?  I think not.  Planned.

Bomb Assad, Bomb ISIL, hand out weapons to various nefarious militias, sure, a great stratagy...if you want to ensure destruction of these states.  Isreal is the big winner here...hmmm.  the tail wags the dog.

The suffering of millions of Syrian refugies who have lost everything...priceless.

Next Iran.

Obama Sir do you have no sense of decency!

From what I've read, the gameplan after striking Hamas is for the shitty little country to go after Hezbullah.

They think they will have an easier time since Hezbullah is so busy helping Assad (as planned), but I think they are in for a shock. The Hezbullah now have *real* combat experience now, unlike the IDF which only has experience these days killing poorly armed Hamas, innocent grandmothers and children.

The step AFTER Hezbullah is Iran, but I don't think the shitty little leadership be in very good shape to do that, so they will again try to get the remote controlled zombie robot US to do it...

Which is the tail and which is the dog? Is Israel a thing in itself, or is it just a tool of the corporatocracy that runs the US?
