When the Buffalo Bills play their home opening game, the team will be without its cheerleading squad -- the Buffalo Jills, for the first time since 1967. The squad has been suspended because some former cheerleaders are suing the team claiming wage theft. What does an NFL cheerleader cost? Bloomberg Businessweek's Ira Boudway looks at the math.

This is easy to resolve for the future. Give the women an orientation session up front before the first audition. Tell them the truth about how hard it is, how much the costumes are, how little the pay, the sponsorship stuff, everything. Make them sign a statement that they attended the orientation and understand everything BEFORE THEY TRY OUT. Then have the tryouts, then sign the contract once they are accepted. The contract needs to spell out everything too.

I think some women will still want to do it. It's not okay to get them to invest in the process, the tryouts, and only after they have made the squad, present the contract. You will get shit like all these lawsuits.

And if you want higher quality entertainers/athletes than the ones you can recruit for free, then fucking pay them.

By law, even a signed contract at that point would be called unfair because of the differential leverage involved; Kinda like all those prenups that are invalidated. Just because you "can" do something, doesn't make it legal.

Hope the cheerleaders get tons of money; then let's see what happens with "showtime" at the NFL.

1. These cheerleader shows are just ridiculous and should have been ended a long time ago as a nod to the "family" nature of football events. There are lots of things that they can do that are better.

While I don't agree with any cheerleader being a cheerleader (seems like just an "entry" to access to guys with money and to use on a resume, degrading them with your comments is not appropriate. Maybe if women really could get equal pay, and have equal access to jobs then they wouldn't want to "work" as cheerleaders.

1) These are human beings, i think that despite the fact that they don't wear a lot of clothes and aren't making it easier for men to see them as people instead of sexual objects, they are in fact women and people who deserve respect based on the fact that they are people, regardless of what they do.

2) They are grown women, and if they signed a contract knowing they wouldn't get paid for the games, I don't feel sorry for them returning now and saying "no fair" when they knew the terms up front. No one is forcing them to be a cheeerleader and work for free. I wouldn't hire a cheerleader, but if I had to I would pay them whatever was mutually agreed upon in the contract, which in this case, sounds like nothing.

3) I would much rather have a relationship with a woman who is attractive and intelligent, rather than a one night stand type of encounter. Having said that, these women wouldn't have a relationship with me (and probably not with most of the posters on here) because I'm not fabulously rich and I'm not a pro-athlete. However, I wouldn't be interested in them either.
