the value of gold, like the value of housing is relatively constant. what happens to housing when interest rates go higher? the dollar cost of the home goes lower, assuming the value remains constant. the only variable that affects the value of housing or gold is the supply of money in the system, (relative to the inflation prospects, or GDP projections) which despite appearances, the money supply is also relatively constant. the bulk of QE was phantom collateral which never affected the money supply because the money loaned never found its way into useful economic activity.
as the price of any commodity falls and the fed keeps the money supply constant, supplies of that commodity start to disappear. works like this, Fed gives play money to banks, banks do not want to lend the money, so they buy stocks on spec, and gold on spec. when the price of gold falls (or more easy money comes from the fed) this money rushes into to buy available supply. then you have what you always have in a price control economy, shortages. so as gold gets cheap, there is less to buy, and soon none at all.
in the great d they put price controls on food, no one could afford it, so the farmers plowed their crops into the ground. now we have price controls on all sorts of things, energy, housing, gold. and in the end there will be no market for these things, which is when you want to have your house, with solar electric, and a fist full of gold in the basement.
