Some of the most recent updates:

Below is a bullet summary of the most recent developments courtesy of the AFP live blog:

23:58 GMT - Fraud allegations - News breaking that police are investigating allegations of electoral fraud in Glasgow. Officials at the referendum count in Glasgow say they are investigating 10 cases of suspected electoral fraud at polling stations.
Related Stories

Media reports say it relates to incidents where people turned up to vote and were told they had already voted.

23:47 GMT - Turnout figures - First turnout figures for a couple of areas have just been announced at the count centre in Edinburgh.

In Orkney the turnout was 83.7 percent, in Clackmannanshire 88.6 percent, fitting the trend of what is expected to be extraordinarily high participation.

23:42 GMT - Tribal chief - AFP's Katherine Haddon, at the Edinburgh count centre, says journalists there face a long wait as officials concentrate on the business of counting the huge numbers of ballot papers. But they are not without diversions:

"In the Edinburgh count hall, Benny Wenda, a campaigner for West Papua to be independent from Indonesia, is drawing plenty of attention from journalists, wearing a tribal chief's headdress featuring the head of a bird of paradise," she tells us.

He is in Scotland with the Radical Independence Campaign but normally lives in Oxford and is one of many separatists from other nations who hope the Scottish vote will mobilise support for their own independence battles.

"I'm campaigning for an independence referendum for my people," says Wenda.

23:30 GMT - Roundup - In case you are just joining us, counting is now under way at each of Scotland's 32 polling stations, with the first results expected from around 2am local time. The final vote will not be announced until after 6am, but a running total may well make it possible to call the result before then.

Officials have reported an unprecedented turnout -- up to 90 percent in some areas, with postal votes also high -- and many people have hailed it a victory for democracy, whatever the outcome.

A YouGov poll released after the close of polling predicted a victory for the "No" campaign of 54 percent to 46 for "Yes". But this hasn't stopped large crowds of pro-independence supporters gathering expectantly in Glasgow's George Square and outside the Scottish parliament in Edinburgh.

22:55 GMT - Bookies expect 'No' - Since the close of voting, betting markets have shifted considerably towards a 'No' vote. Bookmakers Ladbrokes said the latest odds were 1/7 'No' 9/2 'Yes'.

22:44 GMT - George Square - In Glasgow, the central George Square is awash with blue and white flags, as thousands of independence supporters await the results.

Globe and Mail correspondent Mark MacKinnon tweets: "On Glasgow's George Square. Crowd waiting for the official count, and hoping the #indyref polls are wrong..."

Other twitter users have posted videos and pictures of flares being lit and flags burned.

22:24 GMT - Looking ahead - Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has invited the SNP to join discussions on more powers for the Scottish Parliament if there is a "No" vote.

He tells STV: "If we have got a no vote as I hope… that's something I would want people from the SNP to be involved in."

Alluding to what at times has been a fiercely fought campaign, he adds: "We have got to heal the wounds that we have inflicted on ourselves."

22:19 GMT - Queen 'watching' - Royal officials tell Britain's Sky News that Queen Elizabeth is watching the referendum results "very closely". Publicly, she has stayed out of the debate, saying it was "a matter for the people of Scotland".

22:13 GMT - Ballot boxes arrive - AFP's Katherine Haddon, in Edinburgh, tells us: "First ballot boxes from polling stations are starting to arrive at the Edinburgh count. In the hall, "Yes" and "No" supporters, some in t-shirts advertising their allegiance, a couple in kilts, cluster in groups chatting to each other, looking anxious. It's going to be a long night."

22:02 GMT - At the Aberdeen count centre representatives from both the "Yes" and "No" campaigns watch on, trying to get a sample feel of the number of votes cast at this stage.

This is one of the biggest counts in the country and First Minister Alex Salmond's vote will be among those counted when the ballot box from his rural home village of Strichen arrives.

21:59 GMT - Aberdeen count - AFP's Robin Millard is at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, where the count for rural Aberdeenshire is taking place. The votes from Aberdeen city are being counted in a separate venue in Scotland's oil capital.

"At the stroke of 10pm, when the polls closed, counting officials immediately went into action," he tells us.

"Boxes of postal votes were tipped out onto the tables and officials in white t-shirts, with blue plastic thimbles for extra purchase on each ballot, began counting the number of votes in piles of 100 to make sure they matched the given tally.

"Plastic boxes filled with sweets are on hand to keep the counters going. With the first piles complete, they drummed their fingers on the tables in anticipation of many, many more."

21:53 GMT - Chairman of the Yes Scotland campaign Dennis Canavan tells Scottish television station STV: "Some people may be super-optimistic… I'm a bit more of a realist, I still think it's neck and neck."

Looks like there was huge voter turnout as in Crimea. Of course in Crimea, the huge voter turnout was due to voter fraud according to the MSM. I'm guessing they will spin this one differently.

Did anybody expect it to turn out any other way? Forget the fact that the vote was probably corrupt, the bottom line is the majority of people these days are going to vote for the free stuff and dependency. Most people dont really want freedom.... It's too scary.

Yes many thought it would go to the Yes vote. The vote was not corrupt, despite those who wished it so. Americans a case in point. You cannot equate the Us situation with UK at this basic level. The vote for yes, if looked at as what the SNP was adovcating would have been more dependency on a welfare nanny state. A closer union with the EU and signing on to the global warning cabal. Just look at A. Salmond's stated policies. Let's look at his immigration policies also.

What this vote did do is to bring into focus a need for change in the internal policies as to better and more equitable distribution of power and allowing the constituent parts to better determind what needs to be done for their communities---i.e. bringing the electorate closer to their governance.

I always have great respect for your opinions on this blog, now I must  disagree.

Pesto says "No" win good for GBP. Rate rise likely in November.

BBC economics correspondent Robert Peston says a "No" vote would mean "sterling would bounce back" in the international money markets. He speculates this could mean a UK interest rate rise as early as November.

"Yes" vote ... we want our Independence as a Nation of Men; and,

"No" vote ... we do not want to continue being servant dogs to the British Elite?

Young Scots most likely comprise the vast majority voting "yes". The older Scots already got their "piece of the pie" during better times, and are simply satisfied with what they'd perceive as a more certain, but not necessarily more stable or healthy future.

In other words, the older generations, thanks to some of the wealth they've accumulated during better times, are less dissatisfied, and are thusly corrupted by this wealth, while, at the same time they feel more vulnerable--due in part to their older age--to signficant change. The future generations (children, grandchildren) be damned. The western world had descended long ago into selfishness, greed, and corruption--it has been pervasive and made its way even to those distant from the monetary spigot.

With even a "no" vote, I don't see this to be the end; but rather, instead, as a wave of political unease that will sweep through all of Europe, and even Scotland once again. Unfortunately, for the Central Banks, this is a problem that currency printing cannot solve; in fact, it makes it much much worse...

Very dangerous ! The Act of Union 1707 was a product of the Revolution of 1688, itself a fear of renewed Civil War as in 1641.

Scotland was the spark that set off the English Civil War in 1640. Maybe these results are the "New Covenanters" which will lead to turmoil in England.

The whole basis of Parliament being permanent is the English Civil War and the abolition of The Council of The North came 1641.

If you don't know English Constitutional History you will not understand that this is the Beginning not the End, and English political structures will now unravel

Okay like all here you are oblivious as to what happened in 1707 the Scots were totally bankrupt well beyond that actually as they had blown all their cash on setting up a colony in Panama a mosquito infested hell hole with Ginger haired people who burn in moonlight.   As a result of this all going t*ts up they came begging to England who initially refused their advances for a unified parliament if the English would pay off their debts, the vote in the Scottish Parliament was unaminous.  They did so willingly because they had effed up without help from anyone else.

Paddy: I live in Co Mayo, Ireland. My major point here is that its like any of the formerly conquered nations, even once they gain some semblance of controlling their own destiny, immediately hand it over to a new slavemaster.

Ireland mostly got out from under that cunt of a queen and then proceeded to sell their souls to the EU. Irish politicians, and those that blindly follow them, are among the worst people walking the earth.

fuck you and the horse you rode in on, man I knew the education system in the us sucks and that you've being dumbed down, but Ireland were never given a vote we had to fight from 1916 to 1921 and even then we only got 3/5s of the island, coindicentally poplulated with the loyalists descendents of the scots, who were always worse than the hun, man during the troubles the scots were the worse troops in ulster, again at least we fought there. The scots are english dick sucking scum.

as an aside it wouldn't really matter if the scots voted yes because like Ireland they would still be a part of the eussr. jew controlled central bank system and like here their elite would sell them down the river.

paddy, re: "if the scots voted yes because like Ireland they would still be a part of the eussr". by EUSSR you mean either the EU or the eurozone

and the answer in both cases is no. both clubs other members made it clear that if Scotland would leave the UK, it would not be part of the EU anymore, and would have to join the queue to enter, with some predicting several years until entry. and the question of Scotland joining the eurozone was even more remote, with Scotland's nationalists preferring to stay in the British Pound Zone instead of joining the EUR Zone (aka eurozone), for which anyway you need to qualify

What flipped a switch in my head was when I read a small news tippet about the Queen summoning Cameron for a private ' chat ' about Scottish independence.

Now why would the Queen do that and let it be known? that's not her normal style.

Shortly after that there was another small news story crafted and designed to try and distance the Queen from any political opinion or involvement then just like that it was gone / retracted.

That's when I suspected something was going down and this vote would be a foregone conclusion.

This was the easiest political event to make money off of that I can remember regrading the pound.

Outcome was obvious as day and the vote isn't 'rigged.' Pensioners and areas that had older populations voted 'yes'

That is really what this about and the whole issues in the EU especially in Spain. It is the youth who are being a future by the status quo, have taken to the streets, and yet haven't been able to overcome the larger demographic numbers of pensioners and soon to be pensioners.

Issue is playing out on a smaller scale in the US and it why marriage rates and household formations at are 80 and 90 year lows per capita

For a site that prides itself on alternative and intelligent viewpoints, increasingly they are just ranting streams of garbage (foreign policy and political ones including this article).

Well, the European Bureaucrats had clearly told Scotland beforehand : If you go your own way we DON'T want you in Eurozone.

No hand outs or Europrotection for an Independent Scotland from us!

Awesome message from Euro bureaucrats to Scotland --(All to protect EZ's relation with 60 million strong England; land of plutocratic Oligarchs)--.

It had its effect on 5 million Scot voters as they were all for joining the Eurozone and leaving £ dictat of City on their economy. The young in Scotland got that message right.

It was also a similar warning to Catalonian independentists in Spain. Eurozone does not want Spain to be divided for the same reasons of losing power and central cohesion.

So, now Scotland stays British and the Labour party keeps its 40 scottish seats for its future battles in Westminster.

But... what happens if Cameron has a referendum, under Euroskeptic pressure, in the next two years and BRITAIN decides to leave the Euroland???

Then, the poor Scots will have been doubly phukked, well and truly!

What a conundrum for Bonny Prince Charlie land!

If (repeat IF) Cameron holds an EU In/Out referendum at some time, the Scots will vote to stay in, thereby supporting what Cameron wants.

And many English will also vote to stay in because there would be a massive "In" campaign engineered/co-ordinated by ALL political parties. Cameron will simply lie by claiming he has achieved major concessions from Brussels whereas they won't be worth a bag of beans.

Whether the Scottish indy vote was rigged or not (did Gordoom Brown spend the last six months filling out fake postal votes?), the accepted result is that 55% of Scots voted to continue having their lives ordered by Westminster in return for being allowed to keep sucking at the teet of the English taxpayer.

This is the result I always predicted and events over the last week or two were just a distraction to give the appearance of people wrestling with a momentous decision. Truth is that very few people anywhere choose to bite the hand that feeds them and the Scots are no different.

55% of Scots have shown the world they are incapable of standing on their own two feet. Much better to continue living on English welfare. Such is socialism.
