The Scotland Referendum: Who Voted How And Why?

Tyler Durden's picture

The following post-referendum poll from Lord Ashcroft does a good summary of who voted how and why. However, the most telling distinction is the following:

  • Voters aged 16-17: YES: 71%; NO: 29%
  • Voters aged 65+: YES: 27%; NO: 73%

How will last night's vote look like in 5, 10 or 15 years when today's 17 year olds are Scotland's prime demographic?

yes, in 5, 10 or 15 years, today's 17 year olds will actually be paying taxes and earning a wage. Unlikely that they'll feel the same when it's their livelihood on the line. I'm kinda disappointed the YES voters didn't win. I'd have enjoyed the English demanding in 5, 10 or 15 years that their government build the damn fence to stop those Scottish from fleeing their third-world Petrostate for a better life waiting on tables and cleaning the bogs in London.

The yutes will grow up, continue to vote socialist (as Scotland overwhelmingly is), become corrupted and dependent on the status quo.

Just like mommy and daddy did.

This vote was never in doubt for this very reason.

Or have you forgotten how rabidly liberal the baby boomers were in their yute?

Now look at them. Try to touch their social security and see what happens.

and the majority of Scots answer was: "We like being Westminster's bitch"

Scots have been sodomized for so long that they don't know different, that is how you do it ! Long live the NWO !

Scots for now on will be no longer the victims of bad historic events, no more the FREEDOM brave boys, but the biggest LOSERS of all modern democracies !

I hope Catalans separate from Spain and show how its done.

Were the "Baby Boomers" the ones who stopped respecting their elders?

They were such a massive demographic they created their own reflection of reality.

It may be particularly hard on them when they finally see what they've created.

Overall I feel kind of sad for the Scotts, definitely a missed opportunity. As other have pointed out one of the biggest pitfalls here is that the elderly and those who are college age clearly voted to keep their governemnt payments coming (pensions or student loans etc). Unfortunately the ever increasing recipients of welfare state payments seem to have skewed the vote... this has all happened before and it will happen again.

I think in many cases the elderly have far too much invested in the current system to even begin to contemplate its demise, examples of what is coming to their doorstep like Cyprus and Greece seem exotic, and 'it could never happen here.' I think we migh have to wait for a larger collapse in the welfare state before many seperatist movements gain momentum. I'm looking forward to whats going on in Spain though, things there might be desperate enough to produce some change.

Precisely.  This is how all empires break down.  Read Gibbon's masterwork on the decline of the Roman empire, bitchez.

ZH and no one here has a clue what the hell this is all about.

As soon as the polls closed, the political class started on EXACTLY what this is all about....the break up of England into 9 regions. The EU has for some 50 years planned for this as it disempowers the one state in the 'union' that actually wants out.

So what do you do? Balkanise it. QED.

Scottish Freedom Defeated?

Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

An English poll predicts that the No vote will get 54%, based on an exit poll. If so, I am disappointed but not discouraged. The No campaign was replete with fear mongering and lying. I kept expecting Cameron to say that ISIS was in favor of independence. But this is only the beginning of the fight for Scottish freedom, which has inspired peoples around the world. Freedom will come to Scotland, and to others held in bondage. After all, Scotland scared the banksters and the rest of the ruling class worldwide. We know we are on the right track.

It’s coming. The rising force of the people against the banks - from fervor in Spain to the new poll in America (showing today one out of four Americans want and lean to having their states withdraw from the union).

The opposition to the government has never been higher.

The powerful turnout of Scottish young people voting overwhelmingly for independence means Scotland will breakaway and fast.

It is clear it is an opposition to the bankers; the bankers are the one trying to hold this together – paying all of the politicians, even the Queen.

I wouldn’t be surprised, tony, if this vote doesn’t come up again within a year.

The Jimmy Reid Foundation published a report in June 2013 demonstrating that London is getting the lion’s share of Scotland’s wealth and that, writes Gordon MacIntyre-Kemp, this wealth drain results in the under-performance of Scotland’s economy. “It highlighted that Scotland’s economy would be 25% larger than it is today in the absence of the historic and present union wealth drain.”

MacIntyre-Kemp wrote in 2013 that “according to the UK Life Expectancy figures, the impact of the unfair distribution of wealth under the Union combined with unemployment caused by deindustrialisation means that people who live in Scotland are dying earlier than those from the wealthiest parts of the UK.

“For example, the male life expectancy in Scotland is 75 versus 79 in the English south east. Possibly more worryingly healthy life expectancy in Scotland is only 59.5 years.”

This causes two big problems, says MacIntyre-Kemp. “First, health care costs in Scotland become higher than the rest of the UK and secondly Scots who pay the same percentage of their wages towards pensions all their working lives will get up to six years less pension.

“So as well as subsidising the rest of the UK during their working lives they do so again in death.”

Where does Scotland’s wealth go?

The unstated assumption in the article is that the 17 year olds won't change their minds as they get older.  Who, at age 30, didn't feel differently about the world than at age 17?  Strange person indeed.

Point is, you can't simply carry forward the numbers from the 17 year olds 10 years and conclude that that is how they will vote.

That said, this vote drove home the point that scare mongering is the chosen - and effective - means of keeping the population in check.  If it's not the terrorists coming to get you, it's somebody coming for your dole check.

The real story is in the rest of the age groups, and the reasons they gave for their vote.

Every age group under 35 was solidly for independence.  Under 55 were narrowly for independence.  Only the two oldest age groups were on balance for union.

The top five reasons for independence were:

1) Disaffection with Westminister politics.

2) The NHS

3) Taxes and pulbic spending

4) Oil

5 Jobs.

The top five reasons for union were:

1) The Pound (monetary fear)

2) Pensions (Free money)

3) The NHS (Free Healthcare)

4) Tax and public spending

5) Defense

WHAT A PICTURE!

The independents are young, want to work, are tired of heavy taxes, regulation, and giveaways at their expense.

The Unionists are old, on a public pension, want free healthcare and public benefits, and want to be defended against those they loot of those things.

Based on this survey it looks like the productive faced the Free Shit Army (FSA) and lost.

Of course...they could just stop working a la Atlas Shrugged.

How will last night's vote look like in 5, 10 or 15 years when today's 17 year olds are Scotland's prime demographic?

About the same, except the fraud will be committed with voting machines next time.

Look Scotland, you don't vote your way to Independence. You want to be free of England and her pedophillic, drug-pushing, fish-blooded queen? Next time march South and raze every building, burn every crop, salt every field, and set seige to every city; then they might listen to you.

Observations of the voting stats:

As a group, the people under 54 years old voted FOR independence. Only the 54+ crowd on balance were against. This means that if the overall vote was 55-45 against independence, there must be a shitload of old people in Scotland. Amirite?

Also notice how few of the YES voters stated benefits as a reason to part ways, and more about having enough of London. I was surprised that oil didn't feature more prominently.

45% of the YES voters want a revote within 5 years. The YES voters are heavily biased toward the younger crowd, so in 5 years they will have moved up in the social hierarchy. This referendum will come up again soon. It's not over.

This is the same thing that will be happening all over the place. The over 65+ crowd was promised security and money for life by the politicians they elected in power throughout their life, and those politicians robbed and stole with the people's approval.

Now the over 65 crowd wants their children to support them in the manner they became accustomed to.

Meanwhile, the younger generations can't even get a stinking job, because they've all been outsourced, downsized, and the older folks have already trained their Indian and/or Chinese replacements.

People will sell their own kid down the river for a some government bennies. The sooner it all comes crashing down, the better. Watch Gordon Brown cut their pensions anyway when the Union goes bankrupt.

The 65+ lived in a more trusting age.

MSM was unanimous in its support of a negative stance (another attraction for people with aches and pains) and, not having access to alternative media, a large part of the population was simply misled to the extent that they ignored the question asked (should Scotland be an independent country) and (apparently) answered no to a different one (ie should Scotland divorce from england, should we break up britain, do you feel safe at night, etc.)

The most curious observation for me is that following  a debate that galvanised the whole of society and mobilised an additional 50% of voters over and above those who turned out in 2010 there do not seem to be any happy winners locally.

In a country of party animals, the parties have been conspicuous by their absence - of course maybe the OAP and nursing homes have been wheeling and jigging since the early hours of Friday.
