Military Plant In East Ukraine Devastated By Massive Explosion; Kiev Accuses Russia Of Using Tactial Nuke
Last night's headlines crowed in bright red flashing text that Russia and Ukraine had (once again) agreed a cease-fire and terms over the borders between the two nations. Perhaps not surprisingly, mere hours later, Ukraine is claiming that Russia has broken the truce... with the use of a tactical nuclear weapon at Luhansk airport. This comes on the heels of claims by the pro-Russia separatists that Kiev forces destroyed a massive military plant in Donetsk. Russia's defense ministry flatly denies the 'nuclear strikes' adding that "no reasonable person will take them seriously." This truce-breaking action has once again raised calls among Ukrainians for the nation to get its nuclear status back; something Russia is clearly strongly against.
Earlier in the day, a massive military facility in pro-Russian separatist-held Donetsk was destroyed. As RT reports, a neighborhood official told Ukrainian 112 television that a shell hit the plant.
“There was a direct hit at the No 47 industrial explosives shop, where some explosives were present. It detonated and caused another explosion. Luckily it didn’t hit the main storage facility where we have some 2.5 tons of explosives,” said Ivan Prikhod’ko, deputy chair of the local community council.
He added that while the incident caused considerable damage, nobody was hurt.

There is no verified report about what kind of weapon hit the plant. But there are rumors of it being targeted by a Tochka-U tactical missile launched by Kiev's troops.
“According to our information, three Tochka-U missiles were fired and there you have it,” a militia member who identified himself as codename ‘Scorpio’ told RT.
Ukrainian media earlier in the day quoted Geletei as telling one of the journalists that the Russian army had delivered two tactical nuclear strikes on the Lugansk airport from a self-propelled Tyulpan 2S4 mortar system, thus causing the Ukrainian troops to leave the area.
“The strikes were so powerful that they demolished buildings completely from top to bottom,” media reports quoted him as saying.
Adn as Inforesist notes, this was confirmed by the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Valery Geletey during the return of the Ukrainian delegation from Poland.

In particular, the forces of the Russian Federation made two impact of self-propelled mortar 2S4 "Tulip" in Lugansk airport. It is for this reason that our military had left him. “The leadership of Ukraine should consider sending Geletei through a basic military training course where rookies learn the main effects of a nuclear explosion and its consequences,” the Russian Defence Ministry said in what meant to be a jock.
“Speaking seriously, Geletei’s regular attempts to justify the failures of the punitive operation in the south-east of Ukraine by alleged actions of Russian army units look like paranoia. But no reasonable person will take them seriously,” the ministry said.

What is somewhat comical is that these incidents comes just hours after Friday’s signing of an extended ceasefire deal between Kiev and rebel forces, which hopes to put an end to hostilities in eastern Ukraine. The deal includes pulling back all heavy weapons from cities and frontlines.
The blast happened just as a Russian humanitarian aid convoy was unloading elsewhere in the city. Some 200 trucks carrying 2,000 tons of aid crossed the border earlier on Saturday.

To some degree, what the Russian government does must be your concern. Same as the Ukrainian government, Germans, Poles, Rwandans. etc.
It seems to me a lot of folks here quickly accept anything the Russians say, but assume the US is lying, and also make up insane conspiracies, too.
So, for the sake or argument, I concede the US government may very well be lying. I do not contend it is an honest or ethical enterprise. But my question to many on this forum stands and is not answered - Why do you trust Putin and Russia over the US and/or the Ukraine?
So, when I ask the questions "Why do you trust Putin?" the response I get is either a personal attack or "the US lies." But just because one party in a dispute is lying, it does not follow the other is telling he truth. I do not trust either, but many here a reflexively taking the Russian side on all things, and given their very long history of expansionism, imperialism, internal and external oppression, and mass murder, I find it very interesting.
And don't tell me the US does all this. That is NOT the question. For the sake of this argument, I concede the point. The question is if you are against these things, why do you stand with Russia?
In the case of Ukraine it is of genuine nation interest to Russia. The easiest comparison is if a foreign power decided to pay for an overthrow of Harper's government in Canada, and replaced their government with radical anti-American elements that were a mix of indigenous and foreign billionaires. If that happened, the US has a genuine interest in supporting the counter-coup/independence movement against the new, coup gov.
That is similar to what is happening here. By and large, that is the way most ZH commenters perceive this. I and many others have said that they don't trust the Russian gov either.
There is also an element of people here that are admiring how Putin plays statecraft. He is not a ham-fisted tantrum thrower. He is shrewd. The best two plays were taking an off hand Kerry statement and judo throwing his ass into not bombing Syria last year and the bloodless Crimea annexation. As an lay-observer of the grand game, those were beautiful moves.
Modern Russia did none of those things you talk about. There is a very clear difference between Soviet barbarism and Russia's modern desire to bring the country into the 21st century like China has. They have given ground due to weakness (Baltic states) and have recently (8/8/8 and Crimea) acted on the red lines that they clearly telegraphed as a responsible state should.
It's an old American tradition of supporting the underdog in an unfair and unprovoked attack. You wouldn't understand.

Before you answer, please open a history book and go to the section on the fall of USSR, 1991.
Then, go to the section on nowadays Russia government, which you'll find under the heading "Conservative governments of the 21st century."

Actually, I was in the USSR in 1991. In my view we in the US have this whole "left" and "right" thing wrong. Fascim, socialism, communism, corporatism, etc, are not "left" or "right" or "liberal" or "conservative." The continuum I see is freedom (say on the left) and government control (say on the right). The above the line running left to right you have "implicit government control" and above "explicit Government Control." Explicit control is where the government explicity owns and controls things in society. Call it totalitarianism, like Stalinism. Implicit control is where the government lets you think you own businesses, land, etc., but they control you via rules and regulation, so you really are their administrative arm. This is more like facism.
So, no, I do not think Russia is a communist country. I think it is now facist/corporatist. Not a whole hell of a lot different from the US at this point. So my question stands, if you do not like the US government, why on Earth would you support Putin and Russia?

The Luhansk airport has been in ruins and deemed unusable ever since the separatists liberated it last month. The buildings were trashed beyond repair. The befor and after pics are not much different. All this shot did was lob a couple of shells into an already destroyed area which for all practicle puposes only will make the cleanup easier. It is no great loss as the DNR/LC army does not have any planes or airforce.

Most likely scenario is that the Ukies are pulling back and decided to destroy a pile of munitions to prevent them from falling into rebel hands. One big clue is that the (unexpected?) explosion happened in the daytime -- leveling buildings -- yet NO ONE was hurt?? We will know for sure if the Ukies are gone from that area in the next week or two.
These are two totally different events with many weeks between them.
The Ukrainian Army were forced out of Luhansk Airport at least three weeks ago, well before the original ceasefire. A large proportion of that damage was the result of probably six weeks of intensive fighting using all kinds of munitions. As far as one can tell there was no single super large explosive event there. This another case of the Ukrainians blaming the 'Russians' when they can't face up to the facts that a bunch of 'amateurs' beat them fair and square.
The second event was this morning when it is possible that the Ukrainian Army fired either two or three Tochka ballistic missiles (similar to a WW2 V2 rocket) or 8" HE shell salvo into Donetsk. The targets were the cement plant and a factory making industrial explosives (also it was dismantling unexploaded Ukrainian munitions). Fortunately it is Saturday so the factories were empty of staff. The latter plant was of course well away from houses etc so there was little surrounding damage apart from everybodies windows for miles. Just the thing for Autumn!
This is real economic warfare as the output of both factories were needed to clear and rebuild the place. What wanton and imbecilic destruction.
That explosion doesn't look anything like a "tactical nuke" going off. It's nowhere near hot enough. The mushroom cloud would be more defined and the munitions more vaporized.

The pictures of the airport at the bottom show the results of an explosion that happened on the 1st September when the Ukrainian army were in control, there are a couple of videos, this one from the 6th shows artillary cases that they were firing from the airport into the town, it also shows the bottom part of a missile.

It looks to me like the Ukrainian army was trying to launch a missile from the airport and it went off whilst still on the ground (probably the fuel exploded) which is why there is no big hole, just sideways devastation.

You say no crater, no nuke, however in the case of Bali it could have been planted below ground? Bali had a huge crater and concrete "dustified" and stripped from the rio on buildings close by. There is a good calculation in the links I posted above about the speed of the blast and the pressures required generated to do this. Put it this way, based on those calculations, Bali wasn't the explosives that the MSN stories offered (C4, RDX, Chlorine). Whatever it was wasn't put together in a back shed.
