US & Arab Partner Nations Begin Airstrikes In Syria - Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

As the broad coalition crumbled, it appears Washington decided there was no time to waste:

  • *U.S., PARTNER NATIONS STRIKING ISIS IN SYRIA: PENTAGON
  • *U.S. USING FIGHTERS, BOMBERS, TOMAHAWKS TO ATTACK ISIS

NBC News reports the attack includes drones and is expecting to hit up to 20 targets. FOX is reporting Qatar is among the arab nation coalition (along with UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Bahrain), according to Lt. Col. Oliver North, which is rather surprising given their rather well-known support for Al-Nusra.

Live Feed...

Fox reports...

As NBC News reports,

The United States launched airstrikes in Syria against ISIS targets, sources tell NBC News.

The U.S. military plans to strike up to 20 targets — logistics, fuel and weapons depots; training sites; troop encampments; command and control sites; and headquarters for the Sunni fighters.

The U.S. military will deploy manned and unmanned air assets, including F-22s, B-1 bombers, F-16s, F-15s and F/A-18s.

The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush is at the ready in the Persian Gulf, and the USS Arleigh Burke, a guided missile destroyer that fires Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAMs), is in the Red Sea.

Statement from Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby

TAMPA, Fla. – The Department of Defense released the following statement from Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby today:

“I can confirm that U.S. military and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles.”

“Given that these operations are ongoing, we are not in a position to provide additional details at this time.

The decision to conduct theses strikes was made earlier today by the U.S. Central Command commander under authorization granted him by the commander in chief.

We will provide more details later as operationally appropriate.

And here is President Obama disagreeing with John McCain's call for airstrikes in Syria in 2012...

Sen. John McCain today called for the United States to begin air strikes against the government of Syria, but the Obama administration indicated it did not agree with his strategy.

“Foreign capitals across the world are looking to the United States to lead, especially now that the situation in Syria has become an armed conflict,” the Republican from Arizona said on the Senate floor. “But what they see is an administration still hedging its bets — on the one hand, insisting that Assad’s fall is inevitable, but on the other, unwilling even to threaten more assertive actions that could make it so.”

But a senior Obama administration official indicated to ABC News that the president and his advisers did not agree with the Republican senator.

“We share his concern and outrage about what’s taking place,” the official said. “We’re also concerned that further military intervention will accelerate the conflict on the ground and worsen the humanitarian situation without stopping the violence the Syrian regime is committing against its own people.”

The official said the U.S. “wants to keep putting pressure on the Assad regime.”

The official noted that the Syrian situation is very different from Libya in many key technical ways, that make them question how effective airstrikes against the Syrian regime would be.

Summarizing in under 140 characters...

*  *  *

The damage has begun...

*  *  *

As we have noted previously, Russia is entirely against a U.S. intervention in Syria which targets essentially the Assad regime for the simple reason that all such an action would do is fast track Qatar's pipeline to Europe and leave Gazprom, pardon the pun, in the cold... (via Maria Dubovikova of Al-Arabiya)

U.S. President Barak Obama addressed the nation on Wednesday, saying that the U.S. is going to expand the air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). He said he would not hesitate to authorize direct strikes against the militant group and its fighters in Syrian territory.

This decision, despite the demonstrated enthusiasm and assertiveness of the U.S. president, is very unlikely to be effective and could even worsen the crisis, pushing the situation to the point of no-return.

First of all, the Syrian government sustainably strikes the positions of the rebels, including ISIS, with relative success. Thus it is quite evident that airstrikes are not effective in fighting ISIS. According to the fighters’ revelations, they know where to hide in the case of airstrikes as they have gained experience in the years they have been fighting against Assad’s forces. This is common for both moderate Syrian opposition fighters and ISIS. Despite the will not to put boots on the ground, the U.S. has no other option if they intend to lead the international coalition. Moreover, it’s impossible to create an effective coalition and battlefront if Iran and Syria are not to be included.

No clear strategy

Obama has no clear strategy to fight ISIS and the terrorist group does not consider him a threat. It took a long time for Obama to admit that ISIS is a terrorist organization and a true threat. It took the beheading of American citizens to make Obama publically realize this.

There are deep concerns that the U.S. will bomb not only ISIS positions in Syria, but also the Syrian government forces

It appeared to be a strong enough argument to start thinking about what should be done to stop the threat. For a rather long time, ISIS fighters were opportune terrorists as they were fighting against Damascus. The policy of dividing the terrorists into good terrorists and bad terrorists seems like a bad joke by the White House.

The decision announced by the U.S. president cannot be taken out context of America’s intense tensions with Russia. Russia was the third country to criticize the U.S. decision to bomb ISIS terrorists on Syrian territory, after the Syrian and Iranian governments. It’s not the best company to keep when opposing Obama’s decision in terms of international prestige and perception, however, it was to be expected.

The criticism came both from Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin and from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Alexander Lukashevich.

The criticism is based on one key point: without the Syrian government’s agreement and a UNSC mandate, the U.S. strikes in Syria would be a gross violation of international law and should be considered an act of aggression. Moreover, Moscow didn’t pass over in silence the double standard approach of Washington, as while helping Iraq to fight the terrorists on its territory, the U.S. president called for approval for more funding of the so-called armed opposition in Syria. Also, recent revelations by fighters in the pages of the Western press purport that the moderates in Syria are absolutely demoralized, weak and their ranks thinned out as the fighters join ISIS. In light of such reports, it is not clear which party Obama is going assist in this case and how his calls correspond to the real situation on the ground.

Heightened U.S. awareness

In general, Russia welcomes heightened U.S. awareness of the crisis – it is better late than never. Minister of Foreign Affairs Serguei Lavrov even criticized the U.S. on September 10 over its supposed double standard approach, saying that “the Americans are bombing them (ISIS) on Iraqi territory, but they do nothing with them in Syria.” Russia would even approve the U.S. strikes against ISIS fighters in case of Washington’s cooperation with Damascus on the matter.

But now there are deep concerns that the U.S. will bomb not only ISIS positions in Syria, but also the Syrian government forces. These concerns can be explained by the fact that evidently the strikes against ISIS could play into hands of Damascus and this doesn’t correspond with the U.S. interests. Taking into account that during all these years of the Syrian war the U.S. could have been trying to realize its plans to bomb Syria, they could take advantage of this situation.

If the U.S. bombs the positions of government forces, by mistake or with malicious intent, this would have doubly unpredictable consequences, both at the international and regional levels.

For sure, this will trigger a new crisis with Russia. The crisis of credibility in bilateral relations will reach the highest point. Russia will ultimately respond to the possible aggression. But how? It’s a big question with a difficult to predict answer. Moreover, possible strikes against Damascus’ forces will blow up the remains of credibility of international law, international systems and institutions. After the meeting over Iraq in Paris on Monday, Russia’s foreign minister stressed that the international community should build common action “on a solid foundation of the United Nations Charter and U.N. counter-terrorist instrument and mechanisms.”  The call to respect the U.N. Charter is clear and logical, however its solidness, as well as that of the U.N. system in general, is already in doubt. Any further violations of international law and U.N. principles will definitely be the last straw, leading to international chaos.

Regional level

On the regional level, the U.S.’s possible bombing of Damascus’ forces could strengthen ISIS. Relations with Iran could become more exacerbated, that could worsen the cooperation with it on other vital issues such as its nuclear program. The Iranian rejection of cooperating with the U.S. against ISIS is already an unpleasant turn,  mostly conditioned by already an committed mistake – Iran was not invited to the international conference on Iraq in Paris.

If the U.S. only strikes ISIS positions on Syrian territory and refrains from bombing Syrian government forces – this would be better for stability and be more predictable in terms of consequences, however it would never resolve the ISIS problem. Airstrikes are inefficient. A full-scale intense ground operation is needed. A true strategy is required, not a strategy of clichés, useless declarations and beautiful words for the ears of American citizens.

Moreover, it should be remembered that ISIS is primarily an idea, an idea making even Europeans and Americans leave their homes and join the group. Ideas cannot be defeated by bombs, actually, bombs make them stronger.

U.S. involvement in the anti- ISIS drive is indispensable, both in Syria and Iraq, especially taking into account its military capabilities. However, it is only positive as part of a sophisticated strategy approved by the international community. It is time the international community elaborate on the strategy to deal with ISIS.

...In other words, expect a Russian response shortly...

Putin doesn't want to stir up ISIS so direct aid to Syria would be hard to do. He might sneak some cash or weapons into Assad's hands, but he could try to swing a stealth deal with ISIS based on having a 'common enemy'.

FOX is reporting Qatar is among the arab nation coalition (along with UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Bahrain)

What do all those nations have in common besides Jordan.

They all belong to the GCC.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cooperation_Council_for_the_Arab_States_of...

This no coalition it is a Penisula Shield Force Operation. It is the Arab equivalent of NATO sending in troops. Qatar's name is just for formality and keeping up appearances purposes.

Jordan has it's own problems with Islamists internally besides the border issue including ISIS and other Islamists. Remember who else was training these people internally besides Turkey. Plus you have the Muslim Brotherhood well established in Jordan also. Though since Jordan is monarchy like Qatar they are allowed to operate freely. Monarchys don't overthrow other monarchys, it is bad for business and each other once the heads start rolling.

It maybe Huffpost but they map it out clearly.

After all the talk about how Russia would not let this happen, it just happened.  And there were no anti aircraft missles, no resistance, and once again absolutely no assistance from Russia.  The leader of another country who was friends with Russia will be killed (and his wife) or they will have to flee to Russia.  But remember, Russia has not let the past leaders flee to Russia before they were murdered.

All you get is big talk, nothing more.  It is not Russia fighting in EUkrain, it is the peope who live there but they do get basic arms from Russia.

If other countries have not seen the pattern of Russia abandoning it's friends yet they too will pay this price.

Yes, everyone said Russia would go hot if this happened, that was wrong.  Everyone says Russia will go hot if Iran is attacked.  I think the pattern will continue.  Iran will be softened up, the propaganda will flow and the bombs will come.

I hope I am wrong but this just what I predicted.  Russia plays chess?  Playing chess while Iraq, Libya, Syria and other locations are taken and Russia friends are buthered.  Assad needs to get out and save his family, if anything Russia is just using the blood of it's friends to drain some financial resources from the opponent.  But when the US/Israel has the oil fields and pipelines for themselves those resources will fund the continued push against Russia.

Putin looks less scary tonight, maybe he should warn of the "Mother of all Battles".

Putin knows this and he's not going to risk full confrontation with the lunatic states beforehand. That's precisely what the lunatic states want.

When it comes to defending Syria he has other cards up his sleeve. We're unlikely to hear much about it when he plays these cards, but you can be sure the effect will be to leave the US and Israel fuming with rage that they didn't get their way while the going was good. And, come 2018 or thereabouts, they will have a real Russian superpower to deal with, putting their out-of-control geopolitical ambitions that little bit further out of reach.

My heart bleeds.

The maniacs who have been murdering leaders like Gaddafi and turning entire populations over to murdering gangs won't hesitate to do the same to Putin and Russia if he makes the wrong move before his country has the strength to carry through with the commitment required. I have no doubt that a fully-restored Russia would be capable of inflicting an epochal defeat of earth-shaking magnitude on the insane if not indeed Satanic Anglo-American and Zionist powers but let's not kid ourselves Russia is in that position just yet. The military upgrade plan announced by the Kremlin in 2010 was a ten-year plan; we're not even half way into that yet.

A month ago Americans overwhelmingly among all registered parties regardless of affliation were against any military intervention in Syria including airstrikes.  3 'beheadings' videos that got played ad infinitum (conveniently) including run more frequently on Fox News and bingo, the polls magically shift and now a majority of Americans support airstrikes with a shift of over 30% in less than a month among GOP registered voters and even almost equal support among registered Democrats.

This website always goes off the deep end with so many absurd conspiracies that are so complicated and multi-teneted that pulling them off is almost operationally impossible with complications.

Instead most of this stuff is done rather simply and effetively by mass saturation of a repeated topic over and over again with a simple them 'ISIS bad, threat to America.'  Run the beheading videos time and time again, concoct BS stories (my favorite have been the ones about Mexicans and even the Cartels aligning with ISIS, and force feed them to the American people.

Also helps that Americans just don't give a shit either.

I disagree that "Americans just don't give a shit".  I'm sure there's a good many who don't want any part of this, didn't want any part of this the last time, or the time before that. The problem we have here is that our elected representatives have gone; completely feral, off the reservation, batshit crazy, full retard. They don't seem to listen to the people after they get elected. They don't have any real reason to listen to us either, because they know as well as we do, it doesn't make any difference one way or the other. Unless you're one of the NWO, Bilderbergers, or other Sociopathic Club card guys or gals, you're going to die too. There are plenty of oblivious sheep for the slaughter who are willfully ignorant, or willfully complicit, their fates are sealed regardless... The Psychopaths want a war, they'll create a war, with or without the support of the people who gave away their responsibility of civic participation in their governance. Sadly, I am not one who has failed in my civic duty as a Citizen of the US of A, but there's too few of us to make numbers game favorable yet. Here's the good part though, many of the willfully ignorant and willfully helpless will be culled from the herd shortly.  Then the numbers game will shift significantly, and those left alive and willing to rethink their prior lives may be able to regain some of their power and grow spines enough to act appropriately for the good of the US of A., and we can rebuild on the principles of what we started from.

Long Live The Republic!

Not what the polls say and nearly ~70% of Americans now support air strikes on ISIS.   The only issue is that there still isn't support for a large scale deployment of American soldiers.

Exact reason why politicians know they can do this is because they know most Americans either could care less or are completely indifferent to it because it does not directly affect or inconvenience them in the least.

If their son or daughter or someone they know well is coming home in a box or a mangled version of their former selves they would instantly care.  Ditto if their were rationing in this country for war and/or a 'war tax' to fund ongoing military operations.  You give way too much credit to the average American.  I say they just don't give a shit as long as it doesn't effect them.  Doesn't make them much different from other people but just saying.

You need to take a look at what has happened in the sciences since high school, especially in some of the more advanced disciplines such as molecular biology.

Again, the leading biological psychopaths and their war agendas.

A Strategy for Israel in the Nineteen Eighties(1982)

"Iraq, rich in oil on the one hand and internally torn on the other, is guaranteed as a candidate for Israel's targets. Its dissolution is even more important for us than that of Syria. Iraq is stronger than Syria. In the short run it is Iraqi power which constitutes the greatest threat to Israel. An Iraqi-Iranian war will tear Iraq apart and cause its downfall at home even before it is able to organize a struggle on a wide front against us. Every kind of inter-Arab confrontation will assist us in the short run and will shorten the way to the more important aim of breaking up Iraq into denominations as in Syria and in Lebanon. In Iraq, a division into provinces along ethnic/religious lines as in Syria during Ottoman times is possible. So, three (or more) states will exist around the three major cities: Basra, Baghdad and Mosul, and Shi'ite areas in the south will separate from the Sunni and Kurdish north. It is possible that the present Iranian-Iraqi confrontation will deepen this polarization."

Flipped around a couple cable news channels and found the usual retired generals spewing the 'agree' 'should have done this sooner' 'we will seriously degrade ISIS' 'Assad can't do anything about it and if anything it helps Assad' chatter. No talk of unintended consequences or any actions that Syria or ISIS may do (other than try unsuccessfully to hide). Kind of wondered the same thing.  Assad is a long-term loser anyways and it is 'win-win-win' for everyone for some of the reasons you mentioned and a few others (EU is up shit's creek for the 3rd time in 5 years economically and German companies are so desperate for growth they have been M&A crazy this year), Putin meets his goals in short-term goals Ukraine and looks like a winner at home, and things gets settled down with natural gas a bit before winter comes.

ISIS (at least in theory) is one of the few things you can get general concensus on in the region.  Maybe the French and British who have two realing leaders can get in on the bombing the 'crazy 7th century ultimate Islamic bad guys) too to pump up support if not at least distract lackluster to pathetic efforts at home.  Ditto for Obama too.

THE PROOF IS IN THE POUNDING

As long as Obama sticks to clearly defined ISIS targets and does not strike any Syrian Army targets, Putin will just harp on the fact that Obama should have asked leave of Assad to attack ISIS.

Whether or not Assad has any S-300 or S-400 air defense missiles  to repel US and allied aircraft  --  well, your guess is as good as mine.

Seeing how Ukraine has played out with Poroshenko ultimately acknowledging the partition of Dombas, you can put me down as someone who thinks Obama is going to stick to air strikes of ISIS targets only in Syria, and not re-exacerbate the last few months of trouble.

What do we know?

1.  Someone is willing to fund a group of patsies called ISIS to justify toppling Assad and back door a NG pipeline through Syria.

2. Someone is willing to risk war with nuclear armed Russia just to get at possible NG and oil reserves in Ukraine.

3. Someone is willing to send troops into a deadly virus hot zone to keep oil flowing out of Nigeria.

4. China wants war with Japan over a few rocky islands with a bit of NG reserves.  They already took some obscure reef off Viet Nam.

5. I'm not even mentioning past actions in Libya, Iran, Afganistan and Iraq.

When you connect all the dots, the energy picture must be pretty grim.  Otherwise, why would anyone think any of these things are good ideas? The deception and skullduggery on all sides is amazing to watch, and the desperation is a tell as to what the real energy situation must be.

This is a victory for the Islamic Caliphate. It is the tacit acknowledgement of their sovereignty. Life is cheap and martyrdom glorious, but bombing missions are expensive in money and reputation. The USA has thrown prudence to the wind -- has lost its cool and its mind. No rational person in the world will welcome this unmeasured spasmodic capitulation to barbarity. It will complicate the retreat from Afghanistan. It will destroy the possibility of Iranian rapprochement. It will polarise the marginalised poor vast majority of the worlds population. It is a crime against humanity and it is economically and politically retarded. Now the disasterous acceleration of catastrophy is guaranteed and all USians are culpable. Pretty convinced that you could get enough Americans to support to support submarines attacks against the City of Atlantis due to their increasing activity in sending trident-armed mermen riding large mantas and other large sea creatures along the Eastern Seaboard to scout for potential areas to strike (even plan an invasion).

Lindsey Graham is authorizing SB 1572 with John McCain as co-signor to spend $159B to 'fortify US Eastern and select Southern' cities towns and harbour including restoring old in-harbour forts and WW2 submarine lookouts.   Graham is looking immediately restore Ft. Sumter to an active military fortification and immediately begin upgrading it to combat the new threat from Atlantis.

Biggest problem so far has been Americans identifying where the City of Atlantis lies in the Bermuda Triangle and that we should be bombing the city of 'Atlanta' and not 'Altantis' instead.

Even though Eboma's bombing action in Syria is a blatant violation of International Law and UN Conventions, nothing will happen about this. The Western world is today being run by criminals who have taken control of their respective governments and the international institutions ...UN & IMF etc.

The country that took part which surprises me is the UAE. All the others are "the usual suspects" run by despots and assorted savage dictators.

Washington and its sycophantic puppets in Europe are determined to create more war to distract attention away from their domestic economic malaise and the rise of the BRICS on the world stage, notably Russia and China. If the people in the West do not rise up and end this madness, it will lead to WWIII.

ISIS is a scheme as holding together Iraq after decade of MASSACRES was too costly.

That is a good move, USA Israel and NATO have wanted to destroy all the middle east sovereign states with any ressemblance of independce for decades. It is well documented, all the people that pass the issue on a religious basis are parts of the problem whereas they are aware of it or not.

A side benefit is that on top of achieving that goal of breaking on of the last remainaning strong nation state in the area (Syria) it is also creating tensions within our societies between the Muslims and the others. It is another succesful to hide the crap that is going on world wide and to have the commoners, whatever their faith, to turn at each others throats if things get out of hand instead of pursuing a rational approach.

France is a perfect example, our economy is crumbling, immigration has been out of control, especially from muslim country, how the people in charge can avoid responsibilities?

Easy turn people against each others and guess who is here to land a hand? The islamist Khalifate...

Situation = many turds (islamic cult worshipers) gathered in one toilet (ISIL)

Smart move = flush the toilet (kill as many of the islamic cult worshipers as possible)

Stupid move = debate who put the turds in the toilet

For retards like SocialismIsCancer to comprehend: Bombing people because of jihadists creates even more jihadists. Ever wondered how come we barely heard about jihad before Americans started meddling in the Middle East, and why there are more everyday nowadays?

Retards don't understand that jihadists are not born with some special fanaticism gene, but come from the people. Generaly, people who are fed up with being bombed for no sane reason.

So, what do retards think should be done, kill the whole of the population of the Middle East so there will be no more jihadists?

Islam is an ideology of conquest & subjugation, islamists are defacto enemies of all non-islamists, therefore kill them all - there are no civilians. USA should use biological & chemical weapons, wipe out the islamist primitives and repopulate with civilized humans.

Air strikes, really?  Remember how well they worked in Vietnam?  I was near some B52 bombing raids and they were chilling indeed, but what difference did they make?....

Vietnam was a war run by politicians.

If you let the politicians get in the way of fighting a war you will always, always lose.

That is the real prize for ISIS, to bring the international structures down. Let the US claim their Constitution permits the President to behave like Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious with his death star - because it will destroy nation states and borders and any form of negotiation - and permit Muslim states to disintegrate and become the Ummah - say Pakistan and Afghanistan and Central Asia just descending into Libyan style chaos.

The US simply could not handle global war and would be sucked in to generational wars over 20-80 years which would bring its own political structures to collapse.

It is truly a case of imperial over-reach and with the record now in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghan, Libya, Pakistan, Yemen  Western public opinion is heartily sick of the Oligarchy pursuing foreign wars for sponsors

Bwahahahaha.  Remember when this douchebag Obama took office?  He'd stroll up to the podium, act like now the whole world can like the US, no more Muslim problem.  All because Obama.  Man, he had his head so incredibly far up his clueless goddamn ass.  Having to meet reality has to really, really suck for the guy.   And I'm really enjoying watching his grovelling little goose-steppers in the US media scramble to explain/support the aggression of the US MIC.  The whole world, five dinky Arab states, is with us, coalition this, coaltion that, yadda yadda yadda, blah blah blah.  Read straight from the script emailed over by the White House.

WELCOME TO THE REAL FUCKING WORLD ASSWIPES.

ZH is one of the biggest proponents of Russia on the blogosphere today. So where is Putin's leadership when it comes to ISIS? What a fucking mock, ISIS doesn't like Putin but he is insignificant in their grand scheme of things compared to the USA. Why isn't machismo Putin bomibing the hell out of ISIS right now, right tonight? Damn hypocrite and coward. I'm tiring of his junk in the media along with his sorry ass country. They have a lot of resources, but they have few friends. Go ahead and do your alternate petroruble universe, see what happens.

Why isn't Iran fighting ISIS in the same way? Shiite shits not fighting Sunni forces sworn to destroy. Why should I listen to Iran any more, why should I care when they dont fight when they are supposed to fight. I don't advocate fighting, but as an older guy, I am tiring of bullhsit machismo in the media from hypocrites like Iran or Russia, who find it all to convenient to defer this kind of fighting to the Americans. Fuck you.

Now perhaps ISIS is a CIA plant, but even so, then Russia should be more than glad to bomb them away for that reason too. So where are they instead of fighting in stupid Ukraine. Remember, ISIS wants to take out Putin as a key and probably only supporter os Assad.

Putin is counting his billions and ISIS is a helpful mess to increase price of oil for Gazprom and restrict efforts to run pipeline to Europe. ISIS is probably funded by the CIA and armed by Russia.
