CDC Confirms First Ebola Case Diagnosed In The US, In Dallas Hospital - Press Conference Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

As experts (as opposed to President Obama) had warned, the probability of Ebola coming to the US is around 20% by year-end. So it should not be a total surprise that:

  • *CDC CONFIRMS FIRST EBOLA CASE DIAGNOSED IN THE UNITED STATES
  • *EBOLA PATIENT IS IN DALLAS HOSPITAL, NEWS 8 REPORTS

The patient recently returned (via plane) from traveling from Liberia, West Africa. This perhaps explains why CDC was "taking precautions in the US" as we noted previously. And don't forget the administration's interference in Ebola treatments.

  • *CDC SAYS INDIVIDUAL LEFT FROM LIBERIA
  • *CDC SAYS PERSON WITH EBOLA IN TEXAS LEFT LIBERIA ON SEPT. 19
  • *CDC SAYS INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPED SYMPTONS ON SEPT. 26
  • *CDC SAYS U.S. EBOLA PATIENT IS A MALE
  • *CDC IDENTIFIED ALL PERSONS THAT MAY BE IN CONTACT W/ INDIVIDUAL
  • *CDC SAYS ALL PERSONS IDENTIFIED ARE MONITORED FOR 21 DAYS
  • *CDC DIRECTOR SAYS: `I HAVE NO DOUBT WE WILL CONTROL THIS CASE'
  • *CDC DIRECTOR SAYS: `THERE IS NO DOUBT WE WILL STOP IT HERE'

As Bloomberg reports,

The first Ebola case has been diagnosed in the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control said today in a statement.

A hospital in Dallas had been testing a person based on their travel history and symptoms, said in a statement earlier today. Another patient was being evaluated at a National Institutes of Health facility. It’s not clear if either patient is the one referred to in the CDC’s initial report.

CDC hosting a media briefing at 5:30pm; participants to include:

  • CDC Director Thomas Frieden,
  • Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner David Lakey,
  • Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas Hospital Epidemiologist Edward Goodman,
  • Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson.

That news explains this from last week..

  • *CDC SAYS NEED TO SCALE UP EBOLA TREATMENT CENTERS ASAP
  • *CDC SAYS TAKING PRECAUTIONS IN U.S. AGAINST EBOLA

It appears the term "contained" means a different thing once again.... as we warned here:

There’s a roughly 25 percent chance Ebola will be detected in the United Kingdom– and as much as an 18 percent chance it will turn up in the U.S. – by the end of September, the analysis of global mobility and epidemic patterns shows. The new paper includes the top 16 countries where Ebola is most likely to spread.

Though concerning, a spread to Western nations is not the biggest threat. At most, there would be a cluster of a few cases imported to the U.S., probably through air travel.

...

“We are at a crucial point,” Vespiginani said. “If the number of cases increases and we are not able to start taming the epidemic, then it will be too late. And then it requires an effort that will be impossible to bring on the ground.”

As we have noted previously (via Michael Snyder):

Even more noteworthy is the fact that the U.S. State Department has just ordered 160,000 Hazmat suits...

The U.S. State Department has ordered 160,000 Hazmat suits for Ebola, prompting concerns that the federal government is anticipating the rapid spread of a virus that has already claimed an unprecedented number of lives.

In a press release posted by Market Watch, Lakeland Industries, a manufacturer of industrial protective clothing for first responders, announced that it had signaled its intention “to join the fight against the spread of Ebola” by encouraging other suppliers to meet the huge demand created by the U.S. State Department’s order of 160,000 hazmat suits.

“With the U.S. State Department alone putting out a bid for 160,000 suits, we encourage all protective apparel companies to increase their manufacturing capacity for sealed seam garments so that our industry can do its part in addressing this threat to global health,” states the press release.

The huge bulk order of hazmat suits for Ebola has stoked concerns that the U.S. government expects the virus to continue to ravage countries in west Africa and may also be concerned about an outbreak inside the United States.

You don't order that many Hazmat suits unless you are anticipating an outbreak of apocalyptic proportions.

And the CDC has just issued a six page Ebola checklist to hospitals to help them spot potential Ebola patients in America...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warning hospitals and doctors that “now is the time to prepare,” has issued a six-page Ebola “checklist” to help healthcare workers quickly determine if patients are infected.

While the CDC does not believe that there are new cases of Ebola in the United States, the assumption in the checklist is that it is only a matter of time before the virus hits home.

Let us hope and pray that these precautions do not become necessary.

Because if Ebola starts spreading like wildfire in this country, we are going to see pain and suffering beyond anything that most of us have ever imagined.

Just consider what a health worker on the front lines is seeing on a day to day basis...

I wake up each morning – if I have managed to sleep – wondering if this is really happening, or if it is a horror movie. In decades of humanitarian work I have never witnessed such relentless suffering of fellow human beings or felt so completely paralysed and utterly overwhelmed at our inability to provide anything but the most basic, and sometimes less than adequate, care.

I am supervising the suspect tent, which has room for 25 patients who are likely to have Ebola – 80-90% of those we test have the virus. We administer treatment for malaria, start patients on antibiotics, paracetamol, multivitamins, rehydration supplements, food, water and juice while they wait for their results. Sometimes people have arrived too late and die shortly after arriving.

In one afternoon last week I watched five seemingly fit, healthy, young men die. I gave the first a bottle of oral rehydration solution and came back with another for the second. In the half a minute or so in which I had been away the first man died, his bottle of water spilt across the floor. The four others followed in quick succession.

Ebola is truly a terrible, terrible disease.

The moment that cases start popping up in the United States, all of our lives will instantly change.

*  *  *

FYI - here are CDC's contamination centers...

*  *  *

Wondering who started all this? It was a 2-year old in Guinea...

I think you might be right, all the "numbers reality" have been well know at Jackson Hole and in the Hamptons for years!!!

The pretend story in PR circles was, it doesn't matter, science and technology will save us all!! But smart people know better and have prepared for and facilitated this day for years!

It's as human nature as this, if it's you or me, It's going to be you!! If its your family or mine that has to die, for the other to live, my perspective will be "it's yours", if that's the only two choices!!!

It looks like the day may be upon us, where there is just those two choices left! If not immediately, it's right around the corner!!

You're talking about the enterovirus that's been causing respiratory infections and polio-like symptoms in children. That's different from the Ebola virus.

A big question indeed.  Funny, seems every time I hear an official talk about this, they always mention that it's NOT TRANSMITTED THROUGH THE AIR.  Whenever I hear so many experts make such a point of saying the exact same thing, I call bullshit (think "boots on the ground"; "weapons of mass destruction"; "red line"; "No sir, not wittingly"; i could go on).

Meanwhile, every anecdote from people on the ground suggests it is, or that it transmits easily enough through spittle and blood droplets to cross with minimum contact.  Underlining this belief is the fact that so many health workers have contracted it despite their training and equipment and assumed mortal fear of the disease--I'm mortified and I've never seen anyone die of it firsthand.  And once again, ebola doesn't lie, it just kills.  Government officials lie, especially lately.  Would bet that something has changed with the virus.

Here's something else to think about relating to where it is in the US:

1) Texas has tons of illegals.  Many of them are fearful of federal workers, people in uniform, and gringoes in general; they don't want to be deported.  I would imagine these people are more impoverished than the average American and see a doctor almost never.  I really don't feel like looking this up so feel free to correct me.

2) Texas has so many prisoners.  They are kept in prisons, which is another name for disease factory.  If it gets in there it will be like Natural Born Killers crossed with Dawn of the Dead.

Ya, this is scary.

Hospitals in the U.S. are, for the time being, actually a bit overcautious when it comes to infections.   This then leads to antibiotic resistance.

They do this to overcompensate for generally unhygeinic behaviors.

You mean Typhoid Mary. I'd rather have one of my fellow irishmen do the deed. I don't want some frenchman taking the credit for ridding us of such folks.

As far as Ebola goes, when it hits S.F. or L.A. , it's bug out time imo.

I already told the wife. When the first diagnosed case hits California, we're both taking LOA from work and heading to our cabin for a bit to see where ( if anywhere ) this leads.

It would seem to me to be prudent to take 30 days and see how it progresses. If it blows up you don't come back. If it subsides, good deal.

On a side note;

As an EMS worker for the last 23 years, I've seen some pretty brutal shit. Most of us don't get overly concerned, until it's time to get concerned. We have thick skins and show up, whatever the fuck is going on, because we like to help people and we like the rush.

We are decidedly nervous about the implications of a true outbreak ( duh ). We are hammering our HR, union reps, base physicians, and county EMS reps / director, daily for updates and preparedness efforts for just such an occurance.

If I get any interesting tidbits, I will most certainly share them with my fellow ZH'rs.

( the timing of this thing really is quite fortuitous as cover for an economic meltdown wouldn't you agree? Or a war? Or martial law? Or some other crazy fucked up thing? )

This shit is HIGHLY suspect. If you aren't, at least slightly, of the opinion that that is possible ..... you aren't paying attention.

Yeah, that hospital must not have gotten the CDC memo that was sent out regarding guidelines for diagnosing and treating Ebola patients, since they turned him away and sent him out to infect other people for 48 hours before they actually admitted him to the hospital.  WTF is up with that????  Maybe Ol'bombyacare doesn't cover Ebola?

So..they are told to go home; it's just a cold/fever, you will be OK in a couple days...so they stop at a pharmacy to fill the prescription..he goes to the bathroom, grabs a little water at the fountain, coughs a little more and maybe stand in line with some food.

The hospital totally f'd up. And at the press conference Frieden side-stepped the question of the patient's nationality. They are hiding something, probably regarding the patient's immigration status. Or maybe the guy is a permanent resident of Liberia and got on the plane knowing he had been exposed to the virus. If he gets sick while visiting relatives, he knows he has access to US hospitals. Ebola tourism... thanks Obama.

Or anywhere in Dallas when he was hanging out contagously for two days after the hospital sent him home last Friday, before taking him back in on Sunday.  Do you really think the CDC, or anyone for that matter, can be sure that they identified every single person he might of directly or indirectly tranferred bodily fluid to?  The CDC is obviously just trying to prevent panic by telling a "little white lie".

I suppose thinking we are officially a third world country because of our inability to prevent this from coming in to our country would make me eligible for reprogramming at the local FEMA camp ground.

Plus he refused to answer what flight(s) he came in on. The claim that you are not infectious when not overtly symptomatic is another white lie. The probability of infection by contact is merely lower, but certainly not zero in the early stages of any viral infection - especially one that can take up to 2 weeks to show visible symptoms. They are in full prevent panic mode now. Everything hinges on keeping the number of patients in a given hot zone to a minimum in order to avoid overloading the regional hospitals and triage centers. The alternative is a general quarantine, which the world's governments have (very stupidly) avoided implementing so far.

I wonder just how well Sierra Leone's 3-day lock-down worked?

The CDC fuckers wont detail the WHO part of their monitoring plan, but "anyone on that flight', plus 'anyone who came within 50 feet of the guy' would both be really important warning signs for the CDC's view of the virus' virulence.  I dont appreciate paying the salary of the CDC fucker who is lying to me while simultaneously endangering my life.  Please, all, remember what that 'director' looks like, and if Ebola takes off, reach out and touch that guy with an appropriate item.
