How Bad Could It Get? US Government Order Of 160,000 HazMat Suits Gives A Clue

Tyler Durden's picture

Now that Ebola is officially in the US on an uncontrolled basis, the two questions on everyone's lips are i) who will get sick next and ii) how bad could it get?

We don't know the answer to question #1 just yet, but when it comes to the second one, a press release three weeks ago from Lakeland Industries, a manufacturer and seller of a "comprehensive line of safety garments and accessories for the industrial protective clothing market" may provide some insight into just how bad the US State Department thinks it may get. Because when the US government buys 160,000 hazmat suits specifically designed against Ebola, just ahead of the worst Ebola epidemic in history making US landfall, one wonders: what do they know the we don't?

From Lakeland Industries:

Lakeland Industries, Inc. (LAKE), a leading global manufacturer of industrial protective clothing for industry, municipalities, healthcare and to first responders on the federal, state and local levels, today announced the global availability of its protective apparel for use in handling the Ebola virus.  In response to the increasing demand for specialty protective suits to be worm by healthcare workers and others being exposed to Ebola, Lakeland is increasing its manufacturing capacity for these garments and includes proprietary processes for specialized seam sealing, a far superior technology for protecting against viral hazards than non-sealed products.

"Lakeland stands ready to join the fight against the spread of Ebola," said Christopher J. Ryan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lakeland Industries.  "We understand the difficulty of getting appropriate products through a procurement system that in times of crisis favors availability over specification, and we hope our added capacity will help alleviate that problem.  With the U.S. State Department alone putting out a bid for 160,000 suits, we encourage all protective apparel companies to increase their manufacturing capacity for sealed seam garments so that our industry can do its part in addressing this threat to global health.

Of course, purchases by the US government are bought and paid for by taxpayers. For everyone else there's $1200 mail-order delivery:

That said... 160,000 HazMats for a disease that is supposedly not airborne? Mmmk.

Exactly, don't you think it is interesting that the first supposed case pops up in Texas? A state with no straight thru flights to Liberia. A state who is hated by the administration. And people from Ebola Hot Zones Continue to be allowed on flights to America?

Americans are scared of their own shadows these days, egged on by the media of course.

Wasn't half the world supposed to die several years back via SARS? We all know what happened, a few  people got the flu, puked up and then recovered. But many of you thought the world was going to end then, again, egged on by the media.

And if it's not Ebola/SARS/Black death that's going to get you all it's a few thousand illiterate 'terrorists', 5,000 miles away riding around on their 15 year Toyota pickups waving their rusty 20 year old AK47s around screaming death to the infidels.

Generals Custer, Sherman and Patton as well as John Wayne are probably turning in their graves right now.

Coming back down to earth.......the gov't always overdoes everything.  If ebola were airborne Obama and his 500 or so fuckbuddies in DC would already be on Mars and instead of 160,000 hazmat suits it would be more like 1.6billion and they would be outlawed to general consumers so that those in the government or health positions won't run out.

It has to be spreading airborne.  The cured Dr. Bradley said he was careful not to get any fluids on him.  He mentioned he might have contracted it from hugging a patient who later tested positive and died.   Hugging means airborne to me.  World War Z is here.  If it spreads through that Dallas hospital we'll have our answer.

Ebola is a 'crappy' virus in the sense that it doesn't foster its host for its own sustainability.

Additionally, the mutations required for it go airborne are highly, highly unlikely.  Do a little homework on viruses, please.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-or-fiction-the-ebola-viru...

Currently, Ebola typically gains entry into the body through breaks in the skin, the watery fluid around the eye or the moist tissues of the nose or mouth. Then it infects various cells of the immune system, which it tricks into making more copies of itself. The end result: a massive attack on the blood vessels, not the respiratory system.

Even viruses that are well adapted to attacking the respiratory system often have a hard time getting transmitted through the airways. Consider the experience so far with avian flu, which is easily transmitted through the air in birds but hasn’t yet mutated to become easily spreadable in that fashion among people.

Ebola turns your body into an Ebola virus factory.  When Ebola senses your blood vessels are about to die (due to the virus it is hosting), it speeds up its efforts.

So the virus' strategy is NOT to pass the virus on like a parasite, keeping the host alive.

Descriptions I read from a source told me the patients at the end actually became zombies, no joke, going wild, spraying any/all fluids they had everywhere, as if the virus was forcing them to attack. Of course, it would be just the body's reaction, but the result is the same.

Beware.

Many (sorry, forgot about some) viruses are transmissible via the air if you hae active virus in your lungs and you are coughing. Ebola Reston is an airborn form o Ebola already currently in the US, but it dosent affect humans. Ebola Zaire as shown in multiple lab studies, shows signs of aerosolized transmission at a distance of 1 meter (3ft). Flu virus and cold virus are a tad smaller so can stay airborn for 2 meters (6ft). Also, Ebola can stay active and viable for transmission without a host for upwards of 6 days in blood, fecal matter, sweat, saliva, and any other body fliud. It stays active in semen for 6 months in survivors.

Ebola isnt the fucking Flu homie. And yes, as a person goes into full organ failure and shock due to virul overload and they are spewing blood out of their eyes, moth, sweat pores, asshole, dick holes, and all the other holes, Im sure they seem like zombies as they melt into a pile of bloody goo and bones. But who am I to judge, maybe you have had some serious colds before, or maybe you have a really bad case of the herpies....dunno....

What's with the downvote? Rabies is known to modify the behavior of a host to facilitate transmission. Its one of its defining characteristics. There are some plant viruses that modify the behavior of insects, also. I thought Patrick Sawyer was just being a dick for spraying his caretakers with piss. Maybe he was compelled to behave aggressively.

Can you say, "Reston?"  Because, ebola went airborne there, and the only thing that saved Washington DC was that when it did it lost its potentancy in humans.

If it ever goes airborne and retains the ability to kill everyone it reaches, it's game over in a short time.  And, there is no reason it could not become more malevolent during such a mutation.

Biggest problem I see is that it infects medical personnel.  Who, I am sure, take every precaution to prevent infection.  Which means it is actually more infective than the PTB want you to believe.

If they came on TV and told the truth, there would be panic in the streets!  Which may yet come to pass.

Enjoy the pandemic.

Trasmission of Ebola Virus from pigs to non-human primates (including airborne transmission)

"The pattern of lesions and immunostaining for EBOV antigen in lungs suggests infection of the lungs both, via respiratory epithelium and due to viremic spread of the virus."

Also did you note that Canada's Health Agency orginally expressed concern that the virus had gone airborne. Then they redacted it because of fears of causing panic

I'm not here to defend Scientific American- which is not the only site that's shown that it would be highly unlikely that this virus has gone airborne.  You want to hang your hat on hating a publication, obviously, so go right ahead.  Every publication or institution is always going to have inaccuracies, redactions, and amendments.  It's the very nature of science.  But it's not giving you any proof or credibility in your claims that this Ebola strain is moving airborne from human to human.  Until you have any evidence whatsoever that this is what's happening, kindly put a fucking cork in your cum receptacle.

Scientific America and the other groups are using old data to make their report. It is also leftist.  An Ebola scare is bad for immigration reform. Try using real data from more current studies instead of some Phd sitting in his office  regurgitating old data from scientist decades ago.

Anyway, I've torn you apart enough so I'm done with you and this topic. You were put down for a reason. Don't tell people to do their homework when you haven't done yours.

Ebola is already running around somewhere in Europe and Asia..of that you can be sure. The FSA zombies are going to be responsible for half of the killing anyway when they start rioting as services break down in major cities. Pennsylvania summer cabin stocked with weapons...here we come. I remember me and my father talking about what we would do back when I was 13 years old...he said the same thing to me during the L.A. Riots and if he ever believed Ebola specifically made it's way to America...he said no matter where you are if things go down we will just meet up in P.A....This is was back in 1994...

That will be your only hope is getting friends and family together and waiting it out for about 3-6 months as it burns through the population in urban cities...if you think for one second that the Wall Streeters are not going to holed up in their castles with private security forces within weeks if this continues to spread..you are mistaken.

Well said Mr McCloy. There are two real world examples to back up what you just said. One was a guy in Bosnia for a couple of years during that whole Yugoslavian Civil War. The other was a guy in Argentina during the meltdown in - I believe  - 2002. Both of them had a lot of their information on blogs a while ago, possibly still available on the web.  Takeaway was you absolutely need a group that is prepared and willing to fight to survive.

The Bosnian guy was one of about 16 adult males in his extended family, not all of whom made it. He said that the lone wolves or smaller groups of two to  three people who had supplies and/or weapons were simply targets for the other groups to come and take their things.

Good luck.

Both have blogs and archived material that are based on real world experience and very informative. Civilization is a thin veneer as they say.

The future is here, it just isn't widely distributed yet.

Right (aside, the remaining Wright amendment restrictions go away later this month).  In an earlier WFAA video, they described Duncan as having arrived 'on a commuter flight', so I was thinking at the time perhaps a Southwest or Seaport flight.  We now know the actual flights:

Sloh, from the Liberia News Agency, said that Duncan boarded an SN Brussels Airlines flight. That plane took him first to the Belgian capital, and he then flew to the United States, where he arrived September 20.

He was on two United Airlines flights -- Flight 951 from Brussels to Washington Dulles and Flight 822 from Washington Dulles to Dallas-Fort Worth -- during that trip, according to a spokesperson for the airline who did not want to be named.

I am of the opinion the Ebola patient is a human dirty bomb.

If the story is true as it is being presented to the public --

#1:  The hospital admits it has protocols to follow and failed?  First questions that should come up:  Have you traveled to or from any foreign countries?  Does the guy have an accent?  If not, you still ask.  Hell, my son had a tick borne infection and that question was asked (+ "sure you weren't camping") about 10 times.

Now, doctors and medical staff make mistakes....BUT I'm inclined to bet they asked and he lied.

They send him home with antibiotics and that tells me they didn't get the whole story or multiple people forgot to ask the travel question.

#2: He intended to infect as many as possible - the planes, the airports, around the nieghborhood, stores,  the EMS staff, interior of ambulance in which others rode in after him, hospital medical  and non-medical personnel and other folks who happened to be in the hospital.  He left his infection in the ambulance for other patients, too.

Now, the infection fans out to numerous people, their families, friends, strangers (it can live on that thing you touched at the store for quite a while).

He leaves the hospital the first time with his antibotic prescription which of course will do nothing.  I'll bet he didn't even fill it...because he knows he has Ebola.  He continues to spread his infection around until he becomes so uncomfortable he decides to get real medical intervention - or intervention is really an attempt to infect more + cause some panic because he's really infectious now -- that route works better to do this than just die at the residence he is occupying.

That's my theory.  NO honest patient would show up sick and not divulge he was in Liberia.

A compliance geek

Good observations, some more points:

What passport did he travel on? We know he didn't land in Dallas and cleared US customs and immigration there. There are no direct flights between Africa and Dallas.

But whereever his first point of entry was, the official would have seen a passport.

Did he travel on a stolen passport or on a fake passport? Good luck getting into the US on one of those.

If he traveled on a Liberian passport the CBP would immediately have a cause for a secondary interview.

We have checks and balances in place at the airports. Either it all failed including the first hospital visit as you state or the guy came her to do damage and was concealing his true origin and identity.

Interesting Sub-Thread.  Thanks for the contribution guys!

The problem with government is that many are simply bureaucrats.  So to them, the appearance of action, is much more important than results.  They are more concerned with keeping their job/benefits and adding more management beneath them, then they are with tangible results.  They've had 9 months since the outbreak started, and there are still no protocals at ports of entry or travel restrictions for one of the dealiest outbreaks in modern medicine? (in terms of mortality rates)
