How Bad Could It Get? US Government Order Of 160,000 HazMat Suits Gives A Clue

Now that Ebola is officially in the US on an uncontrolled basis, the two questions on everyone's lips are i) who will get sick next and ii) how bad could it get?

We don't know the answer to question #1 just yet, but when it comes to the second one, a press release three weeks ago from Lakeland Industries, a manufacturer and seller of a "comprehensive line of safety garments and accessories for the industrial protective clothing market" may provide some insight into just how bad the US State Department thinks it may get. Because when the US government buys 160,000 hazmat suits specifically designed against Ebola, just ahead of the worst Ebola epidemic in history making US landfall, one wonders: what do they know the we don't?

Thomas Eric Duncan the Eabow live patient from Liberia was exposed to a dying Ebola woman on September 15. She died that night and four days later on September 19 he ordered a plane to the US presumably knowing he had been in contact with The Ebola virus, but keeping it secret perhaps hoping for better medical care in the US as he visited an American girlfriend. I seriously doubt we are being told the full story.

As many as 80 people had direct or indirect contact with a man diagnosed in Texas with Ebola virus, officials have told US media.

About 12-18 people were potentially exposed to the virus through Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan.

The larger number includes people who may not have had contact with him personally, NBC and CBS report.

Four of his family members have been ordered to stay home and not receive visitors until 19 October.

In a statement, Texas health officials said a "strict public health control order is needed to ensure compliance".

"This order gives us the ability to monitor the situation in the most meticulous way," Dr David Lakey, Texas health commissioner, said.

Mr Duncan is thought to have contracted the virus in Liberia.

The Liberian national came to the US nearly two weeks ago to visit relatives and he is the first man to be diagnosed with Ebola while in the US.

Mr Duncan is now in a serious condition, a spokeswoman for the hospital said.
