Thousands Sign Petition To Ban Flights From Ebola Countries; Two Removed From Newark Airplane By Hazmat Crew

Tyler Durden's picture

Whether it is due to the sheer deferred Ebola panic (we warned in June it was only a matter of time before the "world's worst Ebola epidemic" made it to US shores, which promptly got us branded as fearmongers as usual), or the administration's bumbled attempt at damage control with a very confused and mostly pointless press conference on Friday afternoon, but three days ago, a petition was launched on the White House website demanding that the "FAA ban all incoming and outgoing flights to Ebola-stricken countries until the Ebola outbreak is contained." As of this moment, over 4,000 people have already signed it.

And while petitions are usually pointless exercise in public outcry, in this case the CDC already responded. As the Hill reports, a travel ban to the countries facing an Ebola outbreak could paradoxically make the problem worse, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden said during a Saturday press conference.

Paradoxically indeed? Let's listen to Mr. Frieden's arguments:

Frieden said the CDC would consider any and all precautions, but warned that a travel ban could make it harder to get medical care and aid workers to regions dealing with the outbreak.

He said that had already occurred when African Union aid workers tried to get to Liberia but were stuck in a neighboring country for days because of a travel ban.

"Their ability to get there was delayed by about a week because their flight was canceled and they were stuck in a neighboring country," he said.

But isn't it mostly US troops deployed in Africa now, sent on a mission to shoot the Ebola virus on sight, instead of "medical care and aid workers" who are now the primary respondents to the world's worst Ebola epidemic in history? Guess not.

Frieden also said the CDC has experienced a spike in reported potential cases of Ebola following the first diagnosis of a patient in the U.S. in Dallas earlier this week, saying the rise in concern was a good thing but that he remained the only patient who has been identified as suffering from the disease. Two patients who were initially identified as having potential Ebola symptoms in the Washington, D.C. area were ruled to not have the disease on Saturday.

"We have definitely seen an increase in the number since this patient was diagnosed… that is as it should be," Frieden said. "We have already gotten well over 100 inquiries for possible patients… this one patient has tested positive," he said. "We expect we will see more rumors, concerns, possibilities of cases. Until there is a positive test that's what they are, rumors and concerns."

So, after ignoring the problem for months, the CDC finally has precisely what it was hoping to achieve: panic? Great job guys.

Frieden also said there were lesons to be learned from the delayed response to the Ebola patient in Dallas. It took two days for those who had been in contact with him to be contacted by medical officials, and Frieden said that should alert medical professionals to pay especially close attention to patients' travel history if they're showing signs of fever.

"As we anticipated, the arrival of the first Ebola patient in the U.S. has really increased attention to what health workers in this country need to do to be alert and make sure a travel history is taking," he said.

And speaking of inbound cases of fever, moments ago ABC reported that  CDC officials have removed passengers from a plane that landed in Newark Saturday afternoon following a possible Ebola scare.

United flight 998 from Brussels landed at Newark Airport and has been met by Centers for Disease Control officials based in Newark after passengers on board, believed to be from Liberia, exhibited possible signs of Ebola. The passenger was displaying flu-like symptoms.

The flight was scheduled to land around noon.

Officials with the CDC removed two passengers from the plane. A man had been traveling with his daughter and both were removed by a CDC crew in full HAZMAT gear.

The airline issued a statement confirming that crew needed to assist an ill customer. "Upon arrival at Newark Airport from Brussels, medical professionals instructed that customers and crew of United flight 988 remain on board until they could assist an ill customer. We are working with authorities and will accommodate our customers as quickly as we can," said a statement from the airline." Other passengers remained aboard but were eventually allowed to deplane around 2 p.m.

A scare which promptly concluded when within the hour, CDC officials determined that the people exhibiting flu-like symptoms were, in fact, not contagious.

Finally, as a reminder, Newark is about 20 miles form Manhattan, although those looking for a real dramatic impact should wait until the Ebola scare touches down at JFK. At the current pace of spread, of the Ebola panic if not Ebola itself, it should be a rather short wait.

If they were from Liberia and were vomiting on the plane, every person on that plane is susceptible.

Right now anyone with the means to leave Liberia on a plane is trying, and is trying to get to the USA where they believe is a cure. Somebody is probably passing out pamphlets on where to go.

Like the Albanian mob telling people to go to Lakewood, OH where a nice Albanian man will set you up with an apartment and a job being a sex slave for a wealthy Jew.

No, not a good point at all. If you care at all about the facts of this Ebola outbreak and the exponential deaths across 3 West African countries you will (if you're an adult) realize that any person in any of those 3 countries will want to get the fuck out if they possibly can - why do you think the US Army is there setting up tent hospitals? You have no fucking idea of how bad things are in those 3 African nations - people left dead and rotting on streets and roads with animals eating the carcasses. You have no fucking idea how "backward" and traditional people are in those countries. Get off of your fucking ass and travel someday. You have NO FUCKING IDEA how much worse things are elsewhere and NO IDEA EITHER HOW MUCH BETTER THINGS ARE ELSEWHERE.

Got news foir you - Europe is a better place to live than USA.

Before you start crowing about the US effort in Ebola stricken nations let me clue you in that Medecins Sans Frontieres has been there since the begiinning of this - as opposed to USA "help" from religious affilliations... and of course then the military. Get a fucking clue.

ajax, it is precisely because I have some clues, that I would NEVER willing travel to more than half of the places on the planet at the present time, nor at any time in the foreseeable future.

I was merely responding to the logic in rwe2late's comment, that flights to and from the USA should have to be stopped, if one agreed that flights from any countries with Ebola outbreaks should be stopped.

Ok Radical Marijuana I understand what you mean but it has nothing at all to do with logic writ large or any other way. If flights to the 3 Ebola sticken countries are on a strictly humanitarian basis then any personnel involved will all be aware that they will face quarantine when returning to the USA. If you don't realize that the US is capable of such precautions legally then you're crazy or perhaps simply insane.

happy face iconographic or whatever the fuck it's called.

One or two, maybe even a dozen cases, will be no problem.  After maybe 20 or so, it will be impossible to track all the people that have had contact with the infected people; then all hell breaks loose.  Since it is only ~50% fatal our population will be back to about 1951.  IMHO the fifties were really a lot better than now.  Of course I was only 18 then.  Looks like the guy in Dallas is on his way out and some of his contacts will need treatment.

There is a real chance this was an accidental release...  bioweapons research was being conducted PRECISELY where the current ebola outbreak first occurred...

According to GBD, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases has been operating in the area since 2006, supposedly working on "diagnostic tests."
Author Randal J. Schoepp, PH. D. reports that because the USAMRIID team just happened to be working on disease identification and diagnostics in the area, they had pre-positioned assays in the region to address the ebola outbreak:

We had people on hand who were already evaluating samples and volunteered to start testing right away when the current Ebola outbreak started.

The laboratory testing site in Kenema is supported by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center-Global Emerging Infections Surveillance and Response System. Other contributors to the work include the Department of Defense Joint Program Executive Office-Critical Reagents Program, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Cooperative Biological Engagement Program, and the DTRA Joint Science and Technology Office.

I go with Hanlons razor most of the time, the way its being handled is pretty shocking, however. We should be sending jumbos full of hazmat suits, salines, and anything else useful out of military/chartered planes and getting the fuck out of there. Stopping trade would obviously be a secondary punishment for those in the effected countries but we should be doing it on scientific advice.

This has the potential to be catastrophic and it doesn't look like it'll be taken seriously until its to late.

i seem to remember part of the issue with this virus being the return of false negitive test resaults early on in the infection. this truly is a crafty, insidious beast that has found it's way to our fair shores.

just a thought here but we are heading into the prime flu season, with that in mind what happens when ebola meets up with N1HI or any other strain of influenza?

things that make you go hmm...

by the way has anybody heard anything on the other person currently in iso in Dallas? I haven't seen any follow up since it was announced that there was a second probable case , seems the whole thing has been memory hole. I suspect he or she is a positive but perhaps they are waiting to announce it until the dust settles from case number one. sure would like to know though.

as far as flights go, it would have been a good idea but ebola always was a bit of a zero sum game. the only way to ensure it would not be a serious health risk to the US would have been to stop it from getting here in the first place.

guess it's to late for that now though, isn't it?

Ebola is an African disease, just like HIV was an African / homosexual disease.  Both Ebola and HIV could have been contained within the affected groups only for selfish individuals deliberately deciding to make it everybodies problem.

It's not just the risk to peoples health, it's the costs involved in the medical care and possible loss of trade if thousands of people become ill.

Ajax: I remember the 80's.  Initially HIV infected gay men, the later infections were due to contaminated blood transfusions, contaminated needles with drug users and then the partners of bisexual/gay men and prostitutes started getting it.  Just Google it, it was first named Gay related immune deficiency disease.

Gay-related immune deficiency (GRID) was the name first proposed in 1982 to describe an "unexpected cluster of cases"[1] of what is now known as AIDS,[2] after public health scientists noticed clusters of Kaposi's sarcoma and pneumocystis pneumonia among gay males in Southern California and New York City.[1]

During the early history of AIDS, when it was considered a disease of homosexual men, at least one physician suggested that male homosexuals reconsider the practice of engaging in anonymous sex.[3]

An ad hoc organization called Gay Men's Health Crisis was founded to combat what appeared to be a homosexual-only disease produced by sexual promiscuity or the use ofintravenous drugs or poppers. Soon after, clusters of Kaposi's sarcoma and Pneumocystis pneumonia were also reported among Haitians recently entering the United States[4] andhemophiliacs, among female sexual partners of AIDS patients, and among blood transfusion recipients with no other obvious risk factors.

Gay-related immune deficiency (GRID) (sometimes informally called the gay plague) was the 1982 name first proposed to describe an “unexpected cluster of cases”[1]  of what is now known as AIDS ,[2]  after public health scientists noticed clusters of Kaposi’s sarcoma  and pneumocystis pneumonia  among gay  males in Southern California  and New York City .[1]

Today the term Gay-related immune deficiency (GRID) is actually standing the test of time according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM)1  represent approximately 2% of the US population, yet are the population most severely affected by HIV. In 2009, MSM accounted for 61% of all new HIV infections, and MSM with a history of injection drug use (MSM-IDU) accounted for an additional 3% of new infections. That same year, young MSM accounted for 69% of new HIV infections among persons aged 13–29 and 44% of infections among all MSM. At the end of 2009, an estimated 441,669 (56%) persons living with an HIV diagnosis in the US were MSM or MSM-IDU.

The basic problem is that medicine actually operates inside of human ecology, but the real human ecology developed through murder systems whose successes were based on the maximum possible deceits. Typically, collectively, we could not do things more BACKWARDS regarding epidemics, because those should be understood using the concepts of evolutionary ecologies, so that the conditions which tend towards more benign forms are promoted, while those which contribute to virulence are demonted.

However, medicine is actually inside the monetary system, which is inside of the murder system. Therefore, a pervese form of medicine which makes the most money, despite causing the most suffering, has been developed. Indeed, the systems of incentives are SO PERVERSE that it is quite plausible that epidemics could be examples of "firefighter arsonists" working behind the scenes. As usual, it is impossible to know for sure, however, there are some reasons to believe that this Ebola epidemic was deliberately done, as a biological weapons experiment. If so, then it would make PERVERSE SENSE that the public responses appear to be so incompetent.

Unfortunately, all of the horsemen ride on the same historical basis, that better death controls must be the central feature of human ecology. However, in the context of real conflicts, the actual death controls got operated by the best organized gangs of criminals, working covertly, to capture control over governments. In the end, that paradox of civilization selecting for criminally insane systems to control it looks like an out of control situation.

The established social pyramid systems use science and technology primiarly to become better at being dishonest, and backing that up with violence. That is the crazy context in which medicine in practiced, so that impossible ideals actually make the opposite happen in the real world. The current tragedy is that the better the science and technology gets, the more that actually feeds the monstrousity of the social pyramid systems to control civlization through backing up lies with violence.

THE BASIC PROBLEMS ARE THE PARADOXICAL WAYS THAT SOCIAL SUCCESS THROUGH BACKING UP HUGE LIES WITH LOTS OF VIOLENCE HAS ITS OWN INHERENT CONTRADICTIONS, WHICH DRIVE FINAL FAILURE FROM TOO MUCH OF THAT KIND OF "SUCCESS."

These days, we are just waiting to see which particular aspect of those integrated systems goes most out of control, first ... While covert use of biological weapons has always been on the top of the list of possible ways that could eventually happen.

I agree, based on the responses, and on the idiotic assertion that stopping commercial air traffic in and out of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea would impede the government's ability to get aid to those countries (they don't have access to military aircraft?), it's hard to dismiss the idea that TPTB are intentionally promoting the spread of this rather than trying to prevent it.

However, we also live in the age of 'style over substance' where people have gotten away with PRETENDING to take action for so long (mark-to-fantasy, Central Bank jawboning as a means of addressing economic crisis, etc....) that its possible those in power (CDC, DHS, etc...) are actually delusional in terms of their understanding - they actually believe that simply SAYING the right things, independent of DOING the right things is sufficient to get the crisis under control.  Therefore, pointing out that 'we have 40 years experience with ebola' (no, the world has 40 years experience, YOU don't have ANY experience with ebola) and 'we continue to monitor the situation vigilantly and take all necessary precautions' (power washers to clean up ebola-infected vomit is taking all necessary precautions?), while claiming that ebola is not that contagious and requires direct contact with a sick person (why so many health officials wearing full protective gear getting infected?) is all that's required, that these words are a magic incantation that will, by themselves and without any appropriate cautionary measures, prevent the spread of the disease.

Either way, we're all fucked now.

I totally agree, Al Huxley. I think both of your suggestions are correct, due to the compartmentalization, or "need to know" regarding how the social pyramid systems work. Those pyramidion people closer to the apex appear to be "intentionally promoting the spread of this rather than trying to prevent it." Meanwhile, lower level people have been employed within systems that require them to be deliberately or willfully ignorant of the bigger picture, as a condition of them getting their job and keeping it. Therefore, the lower level people appear to be "actually delusional in terms of their understanding."

"Either way, we're all fucked now," due to the paradoxical problem that civilization is controlled by lies backed by violence, which results in civilization going down the path of least morality.

I like to try to understand how and why that is happening. However, while doing so I have never found any practical ways to do anything about that runaway criminal insanity. The dynamics of social systems which are controlled by the applications of the methods of organized crime, so much, for so long, have resulted in the vast majority of people being unable to understand the ways that they were being manipulated. Indeed, it still appears that many people who are ruled over continue to be conditioned to find it impossible to believe that the ruling classes are criminally insane!

At least on Zero Hedge one can find a small community of people who are able and willing to consider that the ruling classes ARE criminally insane, and we can commiserate with each other about that. However, as long as those people continue to be a relatively small minority, nothing politically practical appears possible to respond to all the various ways that the ruling classes are engaged in systematic wars against the consciousness and lives of those that they rule over.

However, as far as I can now tell, most of the people who are employed within the established systems have been selected and molded to be "actually delusional in terms of their understanding," so that they can not see the forest for the trees, regarding the various ways that the ruling classes ARE "intentionally promoting" multifaceted wars against the consciousness and lives of the vast majority of people, that are being ruled over, and who have therefore gradually adapted to live inside of slave societies, whereby they mostly think like Uncle Tom slaves.

Furthermore, IF that was not bad enough, I regard all of the publicly controlled opposition groups as being just as much a part of the overall problem, since they continue to operate within the same frame of reference of the ruling classes' bullshit world view. Indeed, one of the reasons why it is practically impossible to think of any genuinely good solutions for these runaway criminally insane problems are that the ruling classes ARE able to dominate opposition groups, by funding them, and/or infiltrating them.

A genuine opposition group would have to pull off a series of political miracles to be able to resist being subverted or wiped out, before it could accomplish anything. A much larger number of people would have to understand the real ways that social pyramid systems worked, before it would be possible for there to be genuine opposition groups that would not end up being infiltrated and subverted.

MEANWHILE, "we're all fucked now," because biomedical technologies channeled into criminally insane biological weapons is much easier to do than stopping those, after they go out of control. In every possible way, the paradoxes of science and technology becoming trillions of times more powerful, being controlled within social systems based on enforced frauds, is driving the entire human species towards extremely horrible futures!

Amazing how this outbreak occured right where re4search was being conducted

Ebola - What You’re Not Being Told

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-08-04/25-critical-facts-about-ebola-outbreak-every-american-needs-know

#23 The CDC actually owns a patent on one particular strain of the Ebola virus. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control owns a patent on a particular strain of Ebola known as "EboBun." It’s patent No. CA2741523A1 and it was awarded in 2010. You can view it here. It is being reported that this is not the same strain that is currently being transmitted in Africa, but it is interesting to note nonetheless. And why would the CDC want "ownership" of a strain of the Ebola virus in the first place?

Okay, I am normally the conspiracy theorists nemesis here...not NSA type nemesis but counterpoint nemesis. However. this situation is so incredible that I have to choose between the most complete near impossible to believe incompetence in the government and President or some other invisible alternative as in a conspiracy. For once, I find the conspiracy to be easier to believe. It may be a first for me.

The question is, "What would the conspiracy be?", especially one I would fathom or give some credibility.

The only thing off the top of my head I can come up with is that the Prez is actually a hard line socialist and wants martial law to suspend the Constitution and take full control of the country. He can suspend elections, the 4th and even 2nd Amendments and take emergency actions of all sorts. Whether or not you want to put Jews or invisible agencies another step behind that is moot. All, I can see is a power grab, at least at first take.

So, we have a lot of conspiracy types. Pitch some other possibilities, preferably that do not involve aliens from Planet X.

Al Huxley, you're right about communication (incantation) taking the place of sound action, or any action at all.

On another subject, power washers to clean up ebola-infected vomit can work, if the power washers contain chlorinated water. No virus on earth resists chlorine. But do they even know that?

I'd be worried that even if the water was chlorinated, the aerosolization would include droplets not in contact with chlorine, and therefore still infectious, although the site itself would be effectively decontaminated when the job was done.  Looking at the photos, it doesn't look like they brought in the hazmat A-team to do the cleanup.  I stand by my earlier prediction that there's a good chance those guys are dead men walking.

Just fucking great.  So you're flying on a plane and some dude from Liberia starts vomiting all over the place, putting micro aerosol particles in the air, which, if you're lucky enough not to sustain a direct hit, are then sucked up into the plane's air recirculation system, and recirculated throughout the plane to all the other passengers who are forced to sit there for two hours while they wait for the CDC to come on board in fucking hazmat suits and take him off.  Then, after exposing everyone else to the Ebola virus for two fucking hours (who hasn't gotten sick after being on a plane), they tell everyone to go home.  The blind are leading the fucking blind here.  What a clusterfuck.  It might be time to stop flying.  Airline stocks will get pummeled.

This whole Ebola fiasco is going to destroy Chistmas shopping. Heck, last year we got snow that damaged shopping. Damn, we just can't get a break. Shouldn't that be worth at least 2000+ points on the Dow?

Wouldn't it be nice to start a petition to DEFUND the CDC and lay off every one of those political appointees - after the travel bans of course.

What's the point of a level 4 biocontainment lab when the whole world is your petri dish?

Listen to NPR - you'll find many in the progressive camp who believe it's important that there's a big outbreak in the United States - that way resources will be devoted to battling the disease that otherwise would not.  They'd see thousands of Americans die and families suffer if it better suits their vision of social justice.  This is Obama to a tee.  We're not special, We must be made to suffer and payback the world for our imperialism.  He has no interest in preventing an outbreak in the US.  He favors it.

Say what you want about President Obama, but if you ACTUALLY think he favors an American Ebola outbreak then your a fucking idiot.

It's not just him Silver, it's every Zio-owned, NWO puppet of the enlightened new satanic age. It's painfully clear Clinton, Bush Obama and their admins have done everything to tear down the fabric of the United States just in the last few decades. I don't need to give specifics, if you don't know you haven't been paying attention.

But this Ebola crisis is deadly, and it has had real implications since the begining of the current crisis because it has infected whole major cities and it's getting worse, not better. To act so cavalierly, then use inane and circular logic on why they are holding the borders open when the stakes are so high, only means ONE THING:

THEY WANT IT HERE.

I dunno.

If there's one thing I've learned in my short time on Earth, it's never to mistake stupidity for intent.

I do think that.  I think he will look for a way to hold America and capitalism responsible for this ebola outpreak.  This outbreak is strikingly more communicable than any previous outbreak.  My bet is that as the numbers in the US increase, which is of course inevitable now, there will be a claim that the increasedvirulence is likely the result of global climate change.

Notice how the release says the passengers are not contagious, but doesn't say they don't have Ebola. I take that to mean that they probably have Ebola, but don't worry because the other passengers weren't in any danger.
